Default Let Me Show You My New Gold Test Stone

I just had my new gold test stone delivered & thought I'd try it out for you.
    About $21.00 delivered.
The underside has an anti skid pad
It's 6" by 3". My first one seems weenie now.
It is easier to get a trace than my old stone.
And the trace is of more uniform quality.
I'm still just playin with this stuff. Lined up above the stone are 10 new 14K wedding bands I bought today with their corresponding trace below.

Well first off it made me feel good today.

Even though I trust the guy selling me bands, I want to double check every thing I bring home just to be sure.

I'm no Tom D, so my photos aren't the best, but this photo shows 14K acid applied to the bottom of the trace.
I apply 18k acid to the top just to compare the results.
The 18k acid quickly eats away the 14k trace.
The 14k acid just sits on top of the 14k trace with no reaction.

This is only good for checking jewelry and poor quality coins. This will not test for a Tungsten core in a gold coin.

looking at your picture the top tested with 18k acid hasnt been wiped off yet ?

how long did it take for the acid to work?

most of the acid test kits i have seen have clear acid...it appears yours is a green gooie stuff?

True. It also won't check to see which cylinder is misfiring. It is just one tool in the toolbox.

Could you post some photos of your checking tungsten cores in gold coins & bars so we can see how to do that? Thanks!

    Tazz,
    l
ooking at your picture the top tested with 18k acid hasnt been wiped off yet ?
Right. Actually neither top nor bottom has been wiped off yet. The bottom 14k just ran due to gravity. (I was working outside on the picnic table which slopes)

how long did it take for the acid to work?
The top 18k acid is just beginning to eat at the traces. Some gold is still able to be seen. In about a minute, they will be eaten clean.
22k acid would have been almost immediate working on the 14k gold.

most of the acid test kits i have seen have clear acid...it appears yours is a green gooie stuff?
Like I said I'm no TomD. My acids are clear and watery. That green tint in the photo is from the Maple tree above the picnic table.

Hi. I just got this stone in the mail today. However, I noticed that when I drop acid on my test streaks, the acid seems to wash away the streak as if the gold has not stuck to the surface of the stone. Have you ever experienced anything like this using the Pro-Premium? Maybe I am just not scratching my specimens the correct way? Is there a correct way? Damn...Help Please.

Not sure if I can help, but I will try.

Firstly, "wash" it with your 22k acid and wipe it with a cloth.

Then, scratch the item back and forth a few times, does not have to be hard, in a couple spots on the stone.

Drop your various acids and see what it does.

If it washes away, but still has gold in it, it should be fine. If it disappears, the item is lower karat than the acid.

Do you have needles to test against? If not do you have a piece of 14k that you *know* is 100% legit? If the answer is no to both then I'm betting the item you're testing is garbage and the reason the gold seems to float away is because it's not gold at all but some type of cheap gold like plate or paint. I tested a piece the other day that was fake and the gold seemed to wash away on me (I knew it was fake beforehand as the chain was magnetic).

Question, what kind of acid are you using? Sulfuric, hydrochloric, something else?
    - If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
