^^^ I agree with you. I was on the edge numerous times too, but resisted. Complicating my decision was I needed a new car as mine suddenly sprung a leak. I chose the car. Don't know if it was the better choice, but I'm ok with the decision. Like they say in baseball....................wait 'till next year.

Here's a grasp at straws: Perhaps the brief backorder notice at about 4500 sales was the real deal and they struck more? In 2011 they struck 3000 more after backorder notice.

 Nothing strange about. These are returns. These are the people who decided to bail out when they realized this coin wasn't going to be below 2012 or even close to it in mintage. If I had bought one then, I probably would have returned it too. What will be interesting is what happens to the count next week.

These days you take mint opportunities where you can get them. Home-runs like all the 2008 mint offerings may not be seen again. I still think this one will come in between the 2012 and 2011 for mintage and that will make it a pretty safe buy. As a series I'm never a big fan of the one-ounce burnished, they cannot rise too high in price or they will compete with other more attractive & exclusive one-ounce coins that inhabit the high price range like the 2006 reverse proof, UHR, 2008-w buffalo $50, reverse proof buff, etc. Anyway it looks like one more shot at getting them at 1575 tomorrow. If the mint does not sell out of these at approx. 7500 coins (4500 initial strike plus 3000 in 2nd strike) I will concede that there is no longer much sense in even trying to outfox the mint.

Gold holds below $1250 on wed. morn and we will have these available at the cheapest price yet in which case I would expect healthy sales. Enough for a sellout at approx. 7500 coins??

File it away, went red on Nov. 28-29th. A 2nd striking this late in the year would be unprecedented.

If you attempt to order one it will say "no longer available for purchase". That's it for the coin. Next week's report should show the final unaudited sales.

This should be the last one since there was a day or two of sales into week 27. Note sales in 2011 were virtually the same as this year by week 27. The mint is short-striking numi coins across the board as usual but there's not much in the data which would give the mint excuse to short strike the 2014's.

    Sales @ week 27:

    2011: 7316
    2012: 6114 sold out @ wk 20
    2013: 7326 sold out @ wk 27

Wonder why this is? I guess there was a group that ordered two at the last moment, kept the best, and sent the other one back to the mint. Does the mint then melt these? Or it could be people try to order when it goes on delay status. Since the orders were made prior to the coin being sold out, these orders are counted in the total outstanding - even if many of these orders are later canceled by the mint? I would have thought the mint would simply track the number of coins shipped, less the coins returned.

I have following this stuff for years and I have yet to hear from anyone who has definitive grasp on exactly what happens with mint orders, cancellations/returns, and reporting therof. I see it all as 'informed speculation', but many insist that the reports only take into account the orders taken, and may or may not fully adjust for cancellations/returns later. The bewildering thing is it takes forever for a final audited figure to surface. As for melting, Coin World has reported the mint does melt unsold coins, but they obviously try to melt as few as possible, which is why they strike to anticipated demand. It's our job to anticipate their anticipation.

ALERT - Mintnewsblog has posted FINAL audited mintages via mint's website:
    2011 $50 unc-w AGE: 8729 (-93 coins)
    2012 $50 unc-w AGE: 5829 (-289 coins)

Based on the apparent initial strike of about 5800 coins for both of these dates in hindsight we should have expected this downward revision to the 5800 range for the '12. Based on this new info I'm going with initial strike of 5800 for the '11 and '12 and 4500 for the '13. Filed away for this year's coin.

Just gonna bump this thread instead of making a new one for this year's coin. I can't see the mint short striking the 2014 this year but who knows.

Re: Now the 2014 $50 Uncirculated Gold Eagle thread

I'll resurrect the spreadsheet I was doing last time after a few more weeks pass.

And I re titled the thread, so just change it back if you'd rather the old title.

Just some info to get us started.

The US Mint opened sales for the one ounce 2014-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle on May 22, 2014.

In recent years, the product has had the lowest final sales figures out of all versions of the American Gold Eagle.

Through the reporting date of May 25, sales for the product have reached 1,844 units.

This compares to a weaker opening of 1,448 units for the 2013-dated coin, which eventually reached sales of 7,293 by the time of sell out.

Think I'll just keep this page up because it contains theories about initial strike quantities and historical sell-out dates and other stuff so it will be easier to refer back to here.

I've added the Mint price of the coin at the time of HC's posting as an added feature. Might be helpful to see if price affects sales, or not. If HC (or anyone) can give me the prices for the earlier weeks, I'll add them to the chart.

Fixed chart. A "tip of the hat" to HC. :beerglass:
