WILL WE SINK? WE'VE GOT A NEW ENGINE!
    followtheboat

    Published on Nov 17, 2016
Will we sink? Will the engine work? Will we stack it into the river bank? What happens when we drop the boat in the water? New engine installation in a sail boat - the story begins here. But not before we fly the drone, chat about cultural differences when living, working or travelling in Asia, and blow engines in a 30 knot squall.

One of the problems with doing work in SE Asia is the cultural differences between us Westerners and our Asian counterparts. Take the 'loss of face' phenomenon. This doesn't really exist in the west and when we get into a heated discussion, it is often forgotten about next morning. In Asia, however, you can permanently damage a relationship by behaving this way. Respect and diplomacy are an absolute must when interacting in SE Asia. Without it, you can find life quite difficult.

We're not always prepared - Ep. 31 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Nov 17, 2016
We had a great time on Ilha do São Nicolau, Cape Verde! A beautiful green island with very friendly people. We stayed at anchor in the fishing village Tarrafal and explored the island by foot and Aluguer. We also went on a spontaneous hike in flip flops and found the amazing cliffs in Carbeirinho.

We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us.

Overnight Alex Thomspon has called in to Race HQ in Paris to advise that he's hit something with his starboard foiler Moustache Wing. He's still in the race but it's too early to tell if it is a enough to slow him down crippling his leading chances. Once again Alex has had drama. It seems to be part of his every race plan. Only time will tell. Meanwhile the noise in another foiler is so bad that he's had to wear ear-muffs and journalist Sébastien Destremau in Face Ocean has another report in his never ending problem with power and furling etc.

Wow wow and wow. We navigated through two reefs using an old chart we had found on the internet. Mix that with an overcast day and we were sorta pushing it... but we made it to the inside of Beverage Reef! Completely uninhabited, with the clearest blue water you’ll ever see (even on an overcast day) and some now well-fed reef sharks lurking in the pass. Still devo about losing that Tuna. Despite the fact we didn’t have the best weather for our stay, it was still one of the most surreal feelings I’ve ever had just being anchored there.

ATLANTIC TRAWLER BRITISH FISHING VESSELS IN WWII 48694
    PeriscopeFilm

    Published on Nov 23, 2016
“Atlantic Trawler” is a 1944 black-and-white Ministry of Information film. An opening scrawl reminds the viewer that: “In peacetime fishermen’s lives are hard and dangerous. In wartime, all their best ships and many of their young men are in the Navy. Those who are left must face not only the ordinary dangers of the sea and storm, but enemy aircraft, floating mines, U-boats and the minefields that cover their old fishing grounds.” The film continues with hots of a steam trawler at work and general views of trawler and deck (mark 01:00) before moving on to the crew discussing jammed machine gun (02:00). We see shots of women on a pier mending nets and gutting fish (03:00) as well as a trawler in heavy seas (03:35) with various shots of deck, wheelhouse, trawl and gear. Charts showing position of minefields follows starting at mark 05:30 with more general shots of crew, one using a sextant, interior of boiler and engine room, and in the galley at mealtime. We see the crews in their bunks (mark 10:15) and hots of wives collecting pay on shore (mark 10:45) — “the only day of the week the women remember you” quips one sailor. The film rolls on with street views mixed with scences of men repairing nets (mark 11:22) and more views of the sea and starting near mark 15:20 at ashore, shopping with their families, in the pub, playing cards, and strolling. The skipper visits office (mark 15:56) to settle the next trip and the areas which have to be visited while an official warns of minefields. At mark 19:07 the crew arrives onboard the vessel Flying Admiral (H66), and the skipper prepares to set sail. As the picture draws to a close we see the steam trawler “Hondo” and learn that it was the vessel “on which this film was made (and) went back to sea with a different crew. She was lost with all hands.”

Do we go naked sailing? That would be telling... and we do tell ;) We also tell you how Millie the Cat came to live with us aboard our Oyster 435, s/y Esper. We install our shiny, new Beta 60 engine. Plus a little bit of sailing around Langkawi, the obligatory drone shots, and quite a few of your questions answered, from insurance, ideal draft, in-mast furling and other stuff.

Right now we are back in Langkawi having picked up our visas ready for a Christmas in Thailand. We're gonna take you to some new locations but just to give you a head's up: if we're a bit late with updates over the next few weeks it could be because we can't get good (or any) internet connection. Bear with us, we'll try not to break the weekly routine, but just in case...

We have been at sea out of sight of land for more than a week crossing the Atlantic Ocean, and still have 800 miles to go to Saint Lucia. Stormy squalls pass by regularly bringing winds over 30 knots. We also run into huge rafts of Sargasso weed which becomes a big problem for us as it hangs up on our keel and rudders slowing us down, and making it difficult to steer.

Trust your gut feeling - Ep. 32 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Nov 27, 2016
The Atlantic crossing is getting closer but before heading back to Mindelo we visit a couple of more anchorages. We celebrate Halloween on the beach with sailing friends and then sail to the uninhabited island Santa Luzia. Back in Mindelo we prepare the last things for the crossing but then our gut feelings tells us that we should wait for a better weather forecast.

Alex Thomson loses the lead for a short time as Armel Le Cléac'h (Banque Populaire) is increasingly pressing Alex as they head into the notorious Southern Ocean. In third is Sebastien Josse (Edmond De Rothschild) , then Paul Meilhat (SMA) and Jeremie Beyou (Maitre COQ). Also Jean Le Cam (In French) who is great.

WELL it was bound to happen. Boats and drones don't really mix well, do they? How do you even fly a drone of a rocking monohull? Or you just don't? Anyway. Join us on our 140nm sail from the magical Beverage Reef to Niue. We see our first Humpback Whales, and have a whale of a time. Stay tuned for the mastering of this new, strange, alien flying camera thing. Elay & Riley xo

229 DAYS ALONE ON AN ISLAND
    followtheboat

    Published on Dec 1, 2016
Living on a deserted island with no-one for company but his dog and the occasional passing sailor, Zen has built his home from flotsam and jetsam. He lives off the island's home-grown food and fresh water supply and barters for fish and anything else you might have to offer. Is this the idyllic life? Is Zen happy? Does he have a motorcycle on which to practice the art of motorcycle maintenance?

While killing time before heading north to Thailand's Myanmar border, we spent a few days anchored alongside some of Langkawi's smaller islands. At 'the Fjord' we joined the set of one of David Attenborough's documentaries watching spectacled langurs feasting on leaves in the jungle, brown-winged kingfishers singing in the mangroves and white-bellied sea eagles teaching their young to soar.
