    DON'T BE A WANCHOR!

Wet weather sailing through storms and squalls doesn't usually bring a high, but in the tropics (where the temperature is permanently above 30°C) it can be exhilarating.

Langkawi disappeared in a hazy start to the day as we headed north towards Ko Tarutao. A strong current and new engine pushed us along in zero wind. SY Esper made such fast progress, we carried on past the Bulon Islands and ended up anchoring in the dark next to Ko Muk.

Meanwhile, two fronts were moving across Thailand and Malaysia from the south and the east to join the party in the Bay of Bengal where Tropical Cyclone Vardah was already dancing. We waited in the rain and wind as the fetch built up in Phang Nga bay. No longer happy at anchor outside Lanta Old Town, we made our way across confused seas towards Koh Phi Phi Don. It was wet and wild.

Finally arriving in the relative shelter of Panwa Beach in Ao Chalong (Phuket), we dropped the hook for some R&R.

That was when the wanker with the anchor showed up.

If your Auto Pilot gear is on Dutchman Pieter Heerema boat No Way Back then you'd better not look at this report as after an involuntary gybe knockdown orchestrated by his Autopilot and he's less than happy with his gear and the boffins who made it. Alex is wanting a starboard tack as he's currently 382 miles astern of Armel. Enda is his Irish self with great wisdom and wit. More

We enjoy using our sailboat to take us to remote locations to hike, backpack, mountain bike, snowboard, snowshoe, mountaineer, climb, swim, free dive, and make amazing films about our travels. Those Vendee Globe boats are just mind blowing. You get a sense of speed from the video which means that being onboard must feel WAY fast. These things would leave all but the best multi hulls in their wake and that foil tech is getting so refined. I never thought I'd see it on big monos and not like that.

... it's almost more plane than boat... really.

Sailing across the Atlantic Pt. 1 - Ep. 34 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Dec 18, 2016
We set sail on November 23 and left Mindelo, Cape Verde to cross the Atlantic to Grenada, Caribbean. The forecast wasn't optimal and the very light winds were concerning. The first week gave us some sun and company by dolphins but very light winds. And then the squalls showed up on the horizon and started to hit us with lots of rain and thunder.

We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us.

We Finally Landed a Marlin! (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 68
    Sailing La Vagabonde

    Published on Dec 19, 2016
It was a bit of a battle pulling this beautiful, majestic creature onboard just out of Tonga, but we finally did it! In the whole 30,000nm miles or so we have sailed around the world in total, we have hooked a good 10 massive Marlin that have all managed to get away (and take our lures), due to the fact we have to firstly drop the sails in a hurry, which always seemed to cost us in the meantime... but because we were on engine, we finally had some luck. Riley was over the moon (I was a tad too excited, Julz I would say possibly scared hahaha). We swam her behind the boat until she was biting and released her back into the wild. Join us as we cruise into Tonga and are welcomed with several other wildlife encounters... I think I'm gunna like it here.

Hopefully these doctor's appointment vlogs will be coming to an end! I'm starting to feel like all I ever do nowadays is work, go to the doctor's or schedule appointments. But I'm feeling much better then I was at the start of this. I've got lots of ideas coming up, thanks for sticking with me! Motivated and working hard. I also have some time off for christmas coming up. Some good opportunities to step up the vlog game until I'm back to work!

Tug VAC clears ice at Lock 7 while ship CAPE waits
    RightInNiagara

    Published on Dec 22, 2016
The downbound CAPE was stopped in the Welland Canal, just above Lock 7, on Dec.21, 2016, due to ice build-up around the upper lock doors, which prevented them from opening. There was a stiff wind blowing ice downbound into the forebay area just above the lock doors. The CAPE was also sitting at an odd angle in the canal, as a crew member on the west pier was trying to tie her up; the strong wind had apparently pushed the ship's rear almost over to the east side. Eventually, CAPE's rear was tied off. But it was also an odd place to stop here, so close to the lock gates, when normally, the ships are given the go ahead to proceed way farther back in the canal: so I wonder how CAPE managed to get so close to the gates before having to stop. I would have thought that if the gates were not opening, that the ship would have been directed to stop and wait, way back along the east pier, where the ships normally wait.
Eventually Nadro Marine's tug VAC arrived, and began to clear the ice around the locks doors, first loosening the buildup so that the east-side door could open, then clearing the ice allowing the west door to open. The tug then went a bit farther back up the canal, and, moving sideways, began pushing the ice into the lock, now that the doors were open. The tug stayed in the lock, clearing ice from the inside areas of the doors while the water was being lowered.

Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound.

Public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime...

A pilot is a mariner who guides ships through dangerous or congested waters, such as harbors or river mouths. Pilots are expert ship handlers who possess in depth knowledge of local waterways. Pilots are responsible under the law and maritime custom for conducting the safe navigation of the vessel. With the exception of the Panama Canal, the pilot is only an advisor, as the captain remains in legal command of the vessel.

In English Law Article 742 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 defines a pilot as "any person not belonging to a ship who has the conduct thereof". In other words someone, other than a member of the crew, who has control over the speed, direction and movement of the ship.

Pilotage is one of the oldest, least-known professions, it is as old as sea travel itself. The oldest recorded history dates back to the 7th century BC yet it is one of the most important in maritime safety. The economic and environmental risk from today's large cargo ships makes the role of the pilot essential...

Their size and mass makes large ships very difficult to manoeuver; the stopping distance of a supertanker is typically measured in miles (kilometers) and even a slight error in judgment can cause millions of dollars in damage. For this reason, many years of experience in an operating area are required to qualify as a pilot. For example, the California Board of Pilot Commissioners requires that pilot trainees must have a master's license, two years command experience on tugs or deep draft vessels, and pass a written exam and simulator exercise, followed by a period of up to three years training gaining experience with all types of vessel and docking facilities. Following licensing, pilots are required to engage in extensive continuing educational programs.

By far the most challenging part of any ship's voyage is the passage through the narrow waterways that lead to port and the final docking of the ship. The pilot brings to the ship expertise in handling large vessels in confined waterways and expert local knowledge of the port. In addition to bringing local maritime expertise on board, unlike the vessel's captain the pilot is insulated from the economic pressures (e.g., getting the ship from point A to point B on time, regardless of weather conditions, traffic, or other navigation issues) that can compromise safety. Instead of being part of the ship's crew, pilots are employed locally and therefore act on behalf of the public rather than of the shipowners.

Normally the pilot joins an incoming ship at sea via helicopter or pilot boat and climbs a pilot ladder sometimes up 40 feet (~12 metres) to the deck of the largest container and tanker ships. Climbing the pilot ladder can be dangerous, even more so in rough seas considering that both the ship to be piloted and the pilot's own vessel are usually both moving. With outgoing vessels, a pilot boat returns the pilot to land after the ship has successfully negotiated coastal waters.

Pilots specifically use pilotage techniques relying on nearby visual reference points and local knowledge of tides, swells, currents, depths and shoals that might not be readily identifiable on nautical charts without first hand experience in the waters in question.

Beyond the experience and training of regular ship's captains, pilots also receive special, ongoing training to stay on top of their profession. Pilots are required by law in most major sea ports of the world for large ships.

However, masters of ships that call at only a few ports, such as a ferry, are issued a 'pilot exemption certificate'. Ships with an exempt shipmaster or mate do not need to carry a pilot...

The Florida Alliance of Maritime Organizations reported that Florida pilots salaries range from US$100,000 to US$400,000 annually. This was similar to other US states with large ports. Columbia River bar pilots earn about US$180,000 per year. A 2008 review of pilot salary in the United States showed that pay ranged from about US$250,000 to over US$500,000 per year...
