ERRV in Storm & Hurricane Force Winds
    Bigwavemaster1

    Published on Oct 12, 2017
The only video to show what it is truly like to live and work on board a ship in a storm.
The storm was classified Hurricane-force 12 on the Beaufort scale.
Hurricane Bawbag was an intense extratropical cyclone, also known by the name Friedhelm, which brought hurricane-force winds to Scotland at the beginning of December 2011. The storm also brought prolonged gales and rough seas to the rest of the British Isles, as well as parts of Scandinavia. On 8 December, winds reached up to 165 mph (265 km/h). The storm was the worst to affect Scotland in 10 years The winter of 2011/12 is usually remembered for Bawbag among Scots.

    Cruising in THICK Fog!!!
    Tula's Endless Summer

    Published on Oct 14, 2017
We left Menemsha for Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard on an overcast morning and 20 minutes into our trip we got into some thick fog. The procedure for alerting other vessels of your position in thick fog is one long blast of your horn not more than 2 minutes apart. It was a little freaky not being able to see everything around us and I think it even made Jetty a little seasick...

Ship ALGOSTEEL at Lock 6, Welland Canal (2014)
    RightInNiagara

    Published on Oct 14, 2017
The downbound ALGOSTEEL seen exiting Lock 7 and heading into Lock 6E, Apr. 28, 2014.
This ship was built in 1966 at the Davie shipyard in Quebec, and was originally named the A.S. GLOSSBRENNER. In 1971 her name was changed to ALGOGULF, and in 1990 her name became ALGOSTEEL.
A sign on the fence notes that the current version of the Welland Canal opened here at Lock 6 on Aug. 16, 1932, with the first ship passing through being the S.S. LEMOYNE. The cost of the project was 130 million - - don't think that they could even build one lock for that these days...!

It was a rough sail getting there with our crew, Daniel, Destiny and James. But it was well worth the trip! Join us in crystal blue waters, on the hunt for a pink beach and good vibes all round. Cheers and happy Monday from us here on La Vagabonde xo

The Cruising Life Just Got So Much Easier - Ep. 70 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Oct 14, 2017
It's time to move on and sail to new destinations but before leaving Curaçao we attend a cruising flea market and sell some treasures from the bilge. Shabby goes in retirement on the island as we pick up our new dinghy and we’re happy as kids on Christmas :)

We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

Staying Salty, Sailing the Mediterranean (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 110
    Sailing La Vagabonde

    Published on Oct 16, 2017
There's nothing like diving off your boat into a crystal blue Mediterranean ocean. Sailing the Mediterranean has exceeded our expectations thus far. Also, I certainly wasn't expecting to see a FLYING DINGHY fly past my window as I was having a shower onboard. Being out at sea and out of range a lot of the time, we seem to miss out on the launching of the latest technologies/fashion/tv shows.. so we were quite shocked to see such a contraption fly by, one mellow afternoon. Someone please fill me in?? What is the deal? Leave us a comment.

Sailing Nandji - The challenges of travelling, Ep 51
    Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

    Published on Oct 18, 2017
Travelling is challenging at times in a foreign country, that is part of the fun! We sail to the city, prepare the boat, provision and check out of New Caledonia... https://www.sailingnandji.com

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we try to sail south east from the greatest surf spot in New Caledonia. We finally have a plan for our future and this involves heading to the city of Noumea to check out of the country. We have some challenging trade winds to negotiate whilst day sailing for 3 days to return to Noumea. Once back in the big smoke it is time to prepare Nandji for our future adventures. We plan to sail north and to more remote areas, therefore we have to make sure Nandji is ready to do this. We fix any minor issues and try to eliminate any problem for the future where we will have no resources to fix stuff. We attempt all this in a foreign country where not many people speak our language or choose to assist. The challenges of travelling are always exciting and keep life interesting, that is why we travel in the first place!

Island life Vanuatu, Take it slow, (Sailing Nandji) Ep 53
    Sailing Nandji - Frothlyfe

    Published on Oct 24, 2017
Settling into island life, we explore the beautiful island of Tanna, Vanuatu. Take a step back in time... https://www.sailingnandji.com

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we check ourselves into Vanuatu at a small village on the west coast of Tanna island, Vanuatu. We have a little explore and head out to drink some kava. With a rolling anchorage, we get frustrated and sail into the strong trade wind for 13 hours to the other side of the island where we find a beautiful anchorage. We then go for a crazy island car ride across the island returning to Lenakel to visit the local markets. We drive past the furious volcano and get our first glimpse of this beast.

If you would like to assist in the Sailing Nandji journey, we welcome any contributions! Thanks legends.

Getting Caught in Aruba - Ep. 72 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Oct 27, 2017
Aruba is the last of the ABC-island and now we have visited them all. We are planning and preparing for our passage to Colombia and since the passage is known for strong wind and high waves we decide to get going when we see a good weather window. But before sailing to Colombia we have time to meet a couple of Arubans, celebrate Malin's birthday and get stuck in a fishing net.

4 KNOT CURRENT!! Nantucket to Hadley Harbor
    Tula's Endless Summer

Nantucket was a blast but we had a small window of beautiful weather that we had to take advantage of before it started to blow hard again. We cruised towards Woods Hole, MA and picked up a mooring in Hadley Harbor. Hadley Harbor seemed super protected and the perfect refuge for a couple days! http://tulasendlesssummer.com

    In this week's "WoW TV":

+ 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race David Witt at the helm on Team Sun Hung Kai Scallywag is startled as the pin in the head-sail fitting explodes and the sail falls in the water (listen for his description of this). All hands on deck and the sail is set again very quickly
+ Scallywag "on the bricks" at the finish in Lisbon and how they get off with an anchor and lifejackets. A typical Sydney Harbour 18 Footer Sailor's ingenuity
+ Scallywag disaster #3, Navigator Steve Hayles is "decked" by the boom and a doctor is ordered. But he's a tough Brit!
+ Vestas has emergency as the water ballast empties into the boat's bilge
+ VOR epic Leg 1 wrap. All the action on the way to Lisbon
+ 8th Catamarans Cup International 2017 and it was fun galore
+ World Match Race Championships Shenzhen, China

Ultra large Thalassa Avra breaks away from Felixstowe Berth 6 with two Svitzer tugs 31st October 201
    Deano C

    Published on Nov 2, 2017

Ultra large Thalassa Avra, which sails as part of the Ocean Alliance on the FAL7 route, breaks away from Felixstowe Berth 6 with a maximum draught of 14.1 metres for the next port of Southampton.

The Harwich Haven pilot, Mr Love boards the the ship from the shore side. Once onboard he radios Harwich VTS to say they were ready for the services and believed there were 2 tugs ordered but firstly the all important question, What was on the tide? Thalassa Avra had to time her departure for a rising tide as the channel is dredged to 14.5 metres to chart datum which meant her draught clearance would have be minimal on a lower tide.

Svitzer Shotley in the capable hands of Captian Good, breaks away from the tug pontoon and heads up Trinity Quay to be the aft tug and makes fast centre lead aft while the Svitzer Deben with Captian Manning at the helm, swings off the pontoon and paddles up to bow and makes fast centre lead forward.

Once fast, the tugs gets in position to pull her off the berth as the lines were slackened to let the mooring gang take them off the bollards. Last lines to be released were the springs.

Both tugs start off with a 25% pull off then Shotley increases to 50%. Deben on the bow increase to 50 but then eases up to get the stern out a bit more before the going back on at 50% then increasing further to 75%. A short while later the Shotley is asked to go all easy as the Deben goes to full power.

Steadily coming into the channel the pilot gets the Shotley to increase power to 50% on the stern as the Thalassa comes ahead on the main engine.

Shotley drops in astern as they come ahead while the Deben eases up and comes straight ahead to slacken down to let go.

As the clearance under the Keel wasn't a great deal, the pilot wanted the Shotley to help them around the 90 degree Beach End turn out of the harbour.
