A Natural Miracle - Ep. 78 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Dec 8, 2017
Have you ever seen a 200-meter high rock standing alone by the flats? Wow, it was a sight and a pretty tough walk up the 649 steps. We were completely blown away by the beautiful landscape in Guatapé and are so happy to share it with you. Hope you’ll like it as well! :)

We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

Ship BAIE ST. PAUL passing ALGOMA DISCOVERY & CAPE on Welland Canal
    RightInNiagara

    Published on Dec 12, 2017
The upbound BAIE ST. PAUL exits Lock 7 on the Welland Canal, on a snowy and cold (-4C) Dec. 11, 2017. She passes by the downbound ALGOMA DISCOVERY, which was tied off along the east wall; then passes by the downbound CAPE, which pulls over to the west pier wall. ALGOMA DISCOVERY then enters Lock 7. ALGOMA DISCOVERY was built in 1987 and was first known as MALINSKA - the painted-over letters of that name can be made out on the ship's rear hull if you look closely at 08:35. Also the letters RIJEKA (city in former Yugoslavia, now Croatia, where the ship was built) were located right below the letters MALINSKA - they can be seen at 08:12. The ship's name was changed to DAVIKEN in 1997, and this name can still be made out on the front hull at 04:40, painted over by the current name. Although it's hard to see, I believe that the letters "DAVIKEN" are also painted-over at the ship's aft at 08:54, under the current name.

The winner of the Military Awards (Millies) 2017 'Hero Overseas Individual’ category was the Royal Navy's Leading Seaman Sally Hughes, who led her sea boat team through rough seas to rescue 14 sailors. LS Sally Hughes’ role was to drive the Ship’s seaboats – 24-foot rigid inflatable boats fitted with diesel engines, more usually found conducting boarding operations and anti-piracy patrols than acting as rescue boats.

2017 CYCA SOLAS Big Boat Challenge Sydney Harbour Black Jack drinks Wild Oats
    Geoff Waller

    Published on Dec 12, 2017
Just 43 seconds separated near-sister ships Black Jack (Peter Harburg) and Wild Oats XI (the Oatley family) in the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s SOLAS Big Boat Challenge on Sydney Harbour today, when the black Queensland boat, skippered by Mark Bradford, swooped across the finish line first at Fort Denison in a fresh north-easterly breeze.

The last time the two boats raced head-to-head on the Harbour was in 2009 when Black Jack raced as Alfa Romeo. That year, Alfa Romeo, then owned by Neville Crichton, went on to claim line honours in the Rolex Sydney Hobart. No doubt Peter Harburg is hoping this is the first chapter in a repeat of 2009, though he concedes it is early days.

“It is nicer to win than to come second, but a swallow doesn’t make a summer,” Harburg said. “These are two good boats and two very good crews. It comes down to the roll of the dice. They will come back stronger than ever in the next one, and the next one is the big one.”

NIGHTMARE AT SEA!!! (everything goes wrong) Ep. 119
    Sailing La Vagabonde

    Published on Dec 18, 2017
Drifting out to sea, in 40 knots of wind, attached to another vessel by anchor chain. We had to be rescued by the coast guard that turned out to be an extremely old fishing boat. The Meltemi wind was blowing a steady 35 - 40 knots all day, we were safely anchored in a sheltered bay UNTIL... another boat anchored on top of our anchor and off we went, attached to one another, just avoiding running into a super yacht in the anchorage and then out to sea. The video is pretty self explanatory. I'm going to save my energy in writing a huge description to go a grab a well earned beer. What a day. The worst day of my whole life.

    https://www.sailingnandji.com

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, Christmas comes early as we receive and install our new Hydrovane. A few months ago on our first overseas passage, our autopilot gave away and we had to hand steer our way across the Coral sea. After hand steering for over 1300 nautical miles our followers decided that enough was enough and a little idea sparked in Traceies mind... How about everyone contributes small amounts and gets these guys a windvane!!!! That is exactly what has happened and we received our new Hydrovane in the post. We install our new self steering device and then take it for a test run!

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, the time has finally come to prepare Nandji to sail and depart Port Vila, Vanuatu. We get the motor inspected one last time before deciding we are ready to travel. Loading up with supplies and filling the tanks, we have a rougher sail then expected and sail 150nm to Malakula island and spend the night anchored at our own private beach. Next day we tracks to Santo island where we try to check out of the country. This turns out to be a near impossible task as Customs officers all have different ideas about rules and length of lunch breaks!

    Hapag-Lloyd - Germany’s largest shipping company | DW Documentary
    DW Documentary

    Published on Dec 21, 2017
Germany’s largest shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has been sailing the seas for over 160 years. Its fleet has everything from container ships to cruise liners.

Hapag-Lloyd is based in the harbor city of Hamburg. In the 19th century, the German emperor would often travel there from Berlin for the ceremonial launch of a new luxury steamship. These days, shares of this gigantic multinational are traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. When the global economy suffers, Hapag-Lloyd suffers too. This documentary looks back over the origins of this venerable shipping company. The 'Hamburg-Amerikanische-Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft' (HAPAG), was founded in 1847; Norddeutscher Lloyd ten years later in Bremen. At first the two companies were bitter competitors - it wasn’t until 1970 that they merged.

Today the company is active around the world. This report takes a look behind the scenes and accompanies young trainees, the First Officer and the Captain of a container giant on the way from Rotterdam to Southampton via Hamburg. It reveals how difficult sales negotiations can be and it asks CEO Rolf Habben Jansen with the question whether container shipping will remain profitable in the future

To Isla Grande With An Encrusted Prop - Ep. 80 RAN Sailing
    RAN Sailing

    Published on Dec 22, 2017
Cartagena offered a lot of squalls and some chaos with dragging boats in the anchorage. But we also got to enjoy the charming city again and found exotic animals in the park before we checked out of the country and set off to the island group Islas Rosario.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PATRON Erin O'herlihy!! Can you make it to Florida? Send us an email. Thanks so much for the support. After the tangled anchors drifting out to sea debacle last week we experienced last week, I sent everyone off to have some down time away from the boat. Daniel would go to Athens and then rendezvous with us in Malta, in particular though Elayna I thought needed a bit of a break. She and Kayla went to the island of Ios which is actually where Elayna and I met. It was a shame I couldn't get there myself but we still needed to get the boat back La Grande Motte before leaving the Mediterranean and I knew from previous experience how difficult it gets rushing from East to West in the Med late in the season. Winter Is Coming.

To be honest its the least I could do. If you guys could only see how much time and effort Elayna puts into just one episode you would fall off your chair. I can't edit movies like she can but I can sail a boat by myself to keep the team heading in the right direction.

I intended to sail solo from Greece to Malta but that was before I met Houmaid, one of the most interesting guys I've come across. After some provisioning and intense discussions about the weather, we set sail for Malta.
