NEW Audi RS4 Avant 2018 - First Drive
    Mr JWW

    Published on Dec 10, 2017
The new 2018 Audi RS4 Avant is here! I head to southern Spain to test drive the new RS4 and find out what it's like to drive on some awesome mountain roads. I only had a few hours with the new RS4 so i opted for more of a review style video to give you a flavour of the car - hopefully we can spend more time with the 2018 RS4 next year and take it on an adventurous road trip!

Here is a little more info on the new Audi RS4 from the press release:

From 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.1 seconds, RS sport suspension and Audi drive select as standard
The V6 biturbo develops 331 kW (450 hp) in the new Audi RS 4 Avant. Its peak torque of 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) – 170 Nm (125.4 lb-ft) more than the previous model – is available across a broad engine speed range from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm. It is key to how the Audi RS 4 is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 4.1 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h (155.3 mph). With the optional RS dynamic package, the top speed increases to 280 km/h (174.0 mph).

The power of the 2.9 TFSI biturbo is supplied to the permanent all-wheel drive via a sportily configured eight-speed tiptronic with optimized gear changing. Audi also offers an optional rear sport differential. Average fuel consumption is 8.8 liters per 100 kilometers (26.7 US mpg) (199 grams of CO2 per kilometer [320.3 g/mi]). That is an efficiency gain of 17 percent over the previous model. The new Audi RS 4 Avant weighs 1,790 kilograms (3,946.3 lb) 80 kilograms (176.4 lb) less than previously.

The standard-fit RS sport suspension sets the Audi RS 4 Avant another seven millimeters (0.3 in) lower than the S4 basic model with sport suspension. By way of equipment options, there are RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), ceramic brakes and RS-specific dynamic steering. Drivers can define their own individual personal driving experience using the standard dynamic handling system Audi drive select.

1969 Lancia Fulvia Rallye 1.6 HF- One Take
    TheSmokingTire

    Published on Dec 14, 2017
This 1969 Lancia Fulvia was sold new as a competition rally car in Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. It logged 10 rally entries between 1969 and 1976, with 3 podium finishes. It was also the featured poster car for the 2005 Classica Canaria Rally.

This version of the Fulvia came with an odd 1600 CC V4 engine producing 115 hp at 6,500 rpm. It came with a close-ratio 5-speed transmission and wheel arch extensions.

During the production of this video, the Fulvia experienced a fuel cavitation issue, the result of idling and filming flyby shots in very hot weather and humidity, which eventually ended the video. Once the car cooled down after approximately 1 hour, it was fine.

Special thanks to the John J Campion Collection, which provided transportation and lodging for the production of these videos. Check out Mr. Campion's whole collection of insane vintage race cars here:

In this video we learn the value of taking the time to test a component even when you are SURE you know what is wrong! Even though I have over 15 years of experience working on cars and know what a bad starter sounds like I still take the time to prove the failure even though it can sometimes be a pain in the neck to do. We see a perfect example in this video of a poor connection (voltage drop) that makes the vehicle exhibit the classic sound of a bad starter... -Enjoy!

It's been a few months since I took my break, but now I'm ready to start posting videos to my EricTheCarGuy channel again!

When I posted my "ETCG Signing Off" video,

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phfKq...

I said I wanted to do 2 things before I started posting to ETCG again. One of those things was finishing the #FairmontProject. Well, that's as finished as any project car can be. The second thing I wanted to do was complete work on a big video project I took on last summer. That is also coming to a close.

This means I'm ready to get back to regular postings on this channel. However, I don't want to do things the way I was doing things. I'd like to bring you more of the videos you'd like to see. In this video I talk about some of my ideas, but I'd love to hear about what you would like to see more/less of on this channel. So please, comment away on what you'd like to see on this channel going forward.

Lastly, I can't thank you enough for the million subscribers while I was gone. I hope to make a dedicated video about that after I get my gold play button. Till then, THANK YOU!!!!

What really happens if I don't get my car serviced?
    AutoExpertTV

    Published on Dec 10, 2017
This predicament comes from a woman I will not name - because I have no burning desire to embarrass her on top of the problem she already has.

"Question about the quality of modern engines: I have a 17mth old vehicle. We serviced at one year, 35,000km - we thought it was a one year interval = didn't think it had to be at 15,000 kms. Service was fine. Now 5mths into the service and the engine has siezed. Is that right?

"Is it possible for an engine to completely pack up after only 17mths? Are they not built like they used to be? Would love your advice because at this stage we're up for a new engine , it's now not covered under warranty which will essentially cost us $5-$10K."

Unbelievable - but perhaps I should not be surprised. There are minimum responsibilities that come with just about everything. There’s an operational baseline that is assumed. And there are consequences if you fail to heed these. Even if only because you are ignorant of them.

This situation is of course not a one-off. It’s collective ignorance - not the first time I’ve had someone try to deflect accountability after letting the service lapse for approximately infinity longer than they should have.

Not servicing a car for 35,000 kilometres is nuts. That’s almost one lap of the planet. It’s utterly negligent and completely indefensible to feign ignorance in the face of the repair bill you can’t jump over.
What I can’t defend here is the tactic in play: Rather than take responsibility, let’s try to brush it off on the carmaker. Servicing requirements are very clearly spelled out in the owner’s manual. Even a politician would get it.

The clear protocol is: servicing on the basis of time or distance - whichever occurs first. The intervals specified are the maximum possible operational times and distances between services. Pretty simple, huh?

12 months or 15,000 kilometres is a generous service interval. 35,000 kilometres is a cruel and unusual punishment. There is no doubt in my mind - legally and morally - that there will be no wriggle room for having this fixed under consumer law, no grounds for legal action, and almost certainly no altruistic offering by the carmaker to pick up the pieces.

This has nothing to do with engine build quality. A properly maintained engine from any leading carmaker will last 200,000km, maybe more, depending on usage. This is not a quality problem - this is a ‘you subjected it to enhanced interrogation at Abu Ghraib and it died’ problem.

One of the more perverse feedback consequences of the incredible advances in automotive reliability over the past 40 years is the rise of a mechanically de-coupled segment of the population. I’m talking about people who own a car, but believe maintenance is optional.
I’m tipping the car at the epicentre of this shitstorm has not had the oil or coolant levels checked in 35,000 kilometres. Ditto the tyre pressures. The only reason these Muppets bother filling up with fuel is that they know the car’s going to be furniture if they don’t.

If these people just checked the oil, water, and air - every second time they filled up with fuel, reliability would jump through the roof.

And there’s an elephant in the room: just about every car has a service indicator. A message on the dash says: ‘oi, dickhead, get me serviced - it’s due’. When yours has been alight for the last 20,000 kilometres, that sound you hear is you loading the chambers and pulling the trigger. Russian roulette - let’s play. Yes!

A very expensive lesson for some, I think.

My AMG GT R is No GARAGE QUEEN!! | VLOG
    Shmee150

    Published on Dec 16, 2017
I told you my AMG GT R was not going to be a garage queen! The snow was falling so I took it to a nearby mountain to have a little fun and see what it's like in some proper snow...

Joined by @sebastiantphotography for some photos along the way, we set off from Frankfurt towards Grosser Feldberg for a journey to the top. Needless to say, the first place we could find to park the car for some shots we made sure that we did and then it was time to continue up the mountain against worsening conditions. However, that didn't stop the 585hp rear wheel drive AMG, no in fact it just triggered unlimited smiles! With the AMG traction control toggle allowing adjustment as seen fit we made our way up with little trouble thanks to the Pirelli Sottozero winter tyres fitted to the car.

This was my kind of day and we then ventured over to the Nurburgring to catch up with Misha from Apex and Lukas from RENNtech before some obligatory photos at the Ring. This is the kind of day the AMG GT R is made for!

Shout out to Seb T at http://instagram.com/sebastiantphotog...

    Thanks for watching, Tim

Is An AMG GT R Black Series Coming? | FFT
    Shmee150

    Published on Dec 17, 2017
It has to be said Mercedes are totally on form right now; with road cars like the AMG GT R, E63 S and S600 Maybach, to 4 consecutive Formula 1 World Championships. On the horizon are cars like a 4 door AMG sports-saloon, the new G Class is imminent and the entire range are on point. However, you might have heard Jeremy Clarkson discussing on The Grand Tour whether the more powerful engine of the E63 S might find it's way into the GT R... will that happen?

Almost certainly if it does, it won't be a continuation of the Black Series as Mercedes report that the name will no long continue, but does the 585PS GT R even need more power in the first place? Order queues for the current epic car are already at 2 years, demand is high and production is limited, not to mention it is also an unbelievable capable and usable car.

Announcing Big Plans For My Ferrari 458 Speciale!
    Mr JWW

    Published on Dec 17, 2017
Announcing big plans for the 458 Special taking place the first couple of weeks in January 2018. Also today was an unexpectedly awesome time with the Ferrari 458 Speciale! A last minute message from @SupercarOneLeg had me leaving my house in the snow, to attend a drift morning at Donnington Race Circuit before concluding my day in Dubai...madness!

A Little Info From Ferrari on the 458 Speciale:

As with all Ferrari special series, the 458 Speciale boasts an array of advanced technical solutions that make it a completely unique model designed for owners looking for an even more focused sports car offering extreme driving emotions.
The innovations span the entire car and include both Ferrari patents and world firsts, particularly with regard to the engine, active aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics. In fact, they set the 458 Speciale apart from the 458 Italia from which it is derived, to an extent unprecedented in the previous Challenge Stradale and 430 Scuderia special series.

Whether on the road or on the track, drivers will feel immediately at one with the 458 Speciale thanks to the speed with which it responds to every input and the consequently natural control it offers, even in extreme manoeuvres. This finely-tuned handling balance delivers an intense driving experience behind the wheel of Ferrari’s most high performance V8.

Will Electric Vehicles Put Your Neighborhood Mechanic Out of Business??
    ETCG1

    Published on Dec 18, 2017
This question was submitted via Twitter by @FWGMills. His question comes from this article.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/i...

The article forecasts gloom and doom for the neighborhood mechanic. Perhaps on some level they're right, but I like to remain optimistic. In fact, a smart person would consider this and possibly build a neighborhood shop around electric vehicle/hybrid service.

Also, I don't think electric vehicles are going to take over anytime soon. I think we still have a few years to go before that happens.

Lastly, don't forget, electric vehicles don't really solve environmental problems. In fact, they could increase them. Lithium mining is toxic, nickel is toxic to mine, cadmium is toxic, and most power plants in the US burn coal to make electricity. This doesn't seem like an environmentally viable option to me. At least with todays technology.

Just because it makes you feel better, that doesn't mean it's better for the planet.

That said, I'm looking forward to your comments and input on this one.

**Note: I realize there are moving black lines in the video. This is because of the frame rate my camera shoots at, and because I use florescent lights in the shop. The combination of these 2 things are the reason you see those black lines. I'm working on this problem, getting a new camera that shoots at a different frame rate and has anti-flicker. If that solves the problem, I'll be doing more videos with DSLR's.

I'll also do more experimenting with the audio to make that better too.

1978 WRC Champion Fiat Abarth 131 'Alitalia' Group 4 - One Take
    TheSmokingTire

    Published on Dec 18, 2017
This 1978 Fiat Abarth 131 Works, at the hands of Markku Alen, won the 1978 World Rally Championship. The competition version of the pedestrian Fiat 131 Sedan, the 131 won 20 WRC events between 1976 and 1981, and wore the distinct "Alitalia" livery for the 1978 and 1979 seasons. Fresh off a full restoration, this particular car is presented in "ready to race in period" condition, and has less than 50 miles on the odometer. This is what it would be like to drive a brand-spanking-new Fiat Abarth 131 Works in 1978.

How to burn your SUV to the ground without even trying
    AutoExpertTV

    Published on Dec 20, 2017
Here’s the best way to burn your modern diesel off-road adventure machine to the ground - without really trying at all. A triumph of no effort - depending on your underlying objective...

If you drive off-road, grass can build up around the diesel particle filter - the DPF - and if the conditions are just right - just wrong - depends how you look at it - your shiny new SUV can be gone in 60 seconds, or less.

The chemical mechanism of this potential conflagration down there, is easy to understand. If you drive off road, dry grass can in some cases build up around hot exhaust components. If the exhaust heats it up sufficiently, the grass catches fire. The fire can spread quickly and consume the vehicle in seconds. That’s bad.

Fire is a runaway oxidation reaction - the flames that kill you are just the radiating plasma. To get things started you need fuel (dry grass - excellent choice) input energy (in the form of heat, thanks very much exhaust system) and oxygen (supplied in this case by rapid airflow from the moving vehicle).

This is guaranteed to get your pulse racing in the suburbs - even though you have cellphone coverage, and easy access to medical care and firefighters.

But in the boonies, if you lose your vehicle in this way, you also lose all your shelter and all your water, all your communications, first aid kit...

How many off-roaders visiting truly remote places do you suppose even cross this bridge and prepare adequately? Not many. Here’s how they’d do it in the military, or the boy scouts: you’d have a ‘go bag’ that you could reach in seconds - water, shelter, first-aid, sat-phone, EPIRB. You’d grab that and hurl it as far from the vehicle as possible.

And I’d suggest you’d have a fire extinguisher. A really big one. And not packed right down the bottom of all the gear. Accessible.

Dry grass catches fire spontaneously from about 300 degrees C - it’s not a straightforward process or an absolute temperature thing. It depends on several factors - like the moisture content of the grass, the contact temperature, radiant heat load, and airflow - but the point is, every modern diesel exhaust system is more than capable of autoigniting any dry crass it can latch on to.

Ralph Gonzales, a mechanical engineer working for the San Dimas Technology and Development Center in California on an occupational health and safety project for the US Department of Agriculture found in 2008 that all but one component of the exhaust system of a modern diesel exceeded the autoignition temperature of what he described as “forest fuels”.

Just to put some numbers on this: PDFs can’t really do their regenerative voodoo below about 500 degrees C. Dry grass starts to char from about 190. It’s a pretty slow process, burning at 190 - typically requiring several minutes for a bit of a smoulder. But at 500 degrees, in high wind, fire is almost instantaneous.

These were the findings of another accredited combustion brainiac, William Pitts, who wrote the miracle cure for insomnia back in March 2007. It’s called ‘Ignition of Cellulosic Fuels by Heated and Radiative Surfaces”.

Mr Pitts did that for the Building and Fire Research Laboratory inside the US Department of Commerce. The purpose was (quote) “to characterise the ignition behaviour of typical outdoor fuels heated by mufflers and catalytic converters”.

The point is: Dry grass doesn’t look dangerous, but it is. In fact, one very dangerous thing you can do is pull off the highway onto the verge - in any car - if that verge is covered in dry grass. You won’t know, but if the DPF has just been doing its its particle immolating voodoo you could easily be parking your 600-degree exhaust on - literally - a tinderbox. That could end badly.

Then there’s driving down two wheel ruts separated by a grassy crown. This is an excellent way to wedge dry grass in underbody pinch points. If the manufacturer of the vehicle hasn’t done an especially ace job in R&D, grass can easily accumulate between (commonly) a heat shield and the hot exhaust itself. That’s really bad.

The exhaust might not be hot enough, and the airflow insufficiently fast, during slow track driving to set it all off, but if you get back on a decent road and the DPF says, ‘well golly-gee, Jim-Bob, better have a hoe-down and regenerate’ temperatures could skyrocket, and of course there’s the 100 kay-an-hour wind literally whipping up the flames.

So although the recent recall references Ford and Mazda only - I’d be thinking twice about getting away from it all over a beautiful straw-coloured grassy field, swaying seductively in the breeze, mid-summer, in your awesome new diesel escape machine. Especially if there’s an alternative.

Of course it’s not as if older diesels without DPFs and even petrol vehicles are immune to this fire risk - I’d be checking them routinely as well, as part of a sane off-road risk-management exercise. And I wouldn’t be parking on any dry grass.

    Should a Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Be My Daily? | REVIEW
    Shmee150

    Published on Dec 22, 2017
The Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S 4matic+ Coupe may come with a lengthy name and a high £79k price tag, but it also brings with it a glorious AMG V8, premium luxury interior and a certain sense of style for a daily driver mini-SUV. This very much joins the pack as a contender for my future daily driver in Germany with both power and comfort on the agenda for cruising on the Autobahns. What do you think, should this be my choice?

With 510PS and 700Nm coming from the 4.0l biturbo V8 that we're familiar with from the AMG GT S, the top-spec variant of the GLC Coupe comes very highly equipped and finished. From tech features like steering and lane assist, 360 cameras and a Burmester sound system, to the finish of the interior and carbon fibre trim. However, the best 'feature' has to be the sound made from this engine and exhaust combination, as always AMG showing how to do it best!

Starting with a walkaround of the new car, before jumping in for a drive through the different modes and then wrapping up with a better view of the interior, let's take a full look around the new Mercedes and see what it's all about.

    Thanks for watching, Tim
