A Stone Cottage Devoted to Books in The English Countryside | Small House Design
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Jan 6, 2018
Emma Burns, senior decorator at Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, had so many books that she converted an old stone barn on her farm in the English countryside into a guest cottage with enough bookshelves to hold them all.

Emma Burns calls this her “book barn,” and it was featured in House & Garden.

Emma says, “This place used to be a glorified garden shed, and though it seemed daft to have so much space and not do anything with it, we couldn’t decide what. Then we moved from our old house in London into a much smaller one and ended up with all these books sitting in storage, so we decided to make it into a book room.”

The ladder leads to a small gallery upstairs where there’s a study and a bedroom.

The oak floors are heated so the cottage can be used all year.

Besides four prints of country scenes, “The books give all the colour that’s needed.”

There are a couple of hidden doors in the bookshelves, if you know where to look!

One door leads to a bathroom; the other to a pantry.

The barn has its original stonework and roof tiles, but the original doors were re-made as shutters.

Love it. For more information, visit House & Garden (photos by Paul Massey)

Passivhaus rooftop flat adds level to 1930’s Mexico City home
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Jan 7, 2018
Alejandro Herrera was commuting two hours each way into Mexico City for architecture school when he turned a vacant rooftop into a tiny home in the city center. In the heart of the very desirable Roma Norte district his new home measured just 42 square meters (450 square feet), but it opened to a garden terrace of the same size.

The initial home was built with a steel frame and plywood and glass panels (to keep costs down). Seven years later, the exterior had deteriorated with the weather and Herrera decided to create Mexico’s first Passivhaus (the very demanding energy efficiency standard from Germany) to cut energy costs. With a tight insulating envelope, the current home uses two-thirds less energy.

1950s Home Retrofit to Super Efficient Passive House - Urban Green Building
    Exploring Alternatives

    Published on Jan 7, 2018
This 1950s Montreal house was retrofitted to become a super efficient passive house by adding a 16 inch thick layer of cellulose insulation to the exterior.

    Construction Le Tournesol:
    http://www.constructionletournesol.co...

Maison Ozalée's builder, Richard Price from Construction Le Tournesol, also used triple glazed windows with insulated frames, and strategically placed small windows on the north side of the building to reduce heat loss, and placed large windows on the south side to take advantage of solar gain, which helps heat the house in winter. In order to avoid overheating the house in the summer, there are built-in shading elements above the large south-facing windows.

The home is airtight, with plywood sheathing to solidify the older home doubling as a vapour barrier once all the seams were taped.

Because of the energy gained from passive solar, and because it's airtight, this home only needs approximately 10% of the energy a typical home of the same size would need to heat during the winter.

The owners are very environmentally conscious and added additional features to their home to make it sustainable not just in terms of energy, but water as well. They installed a rainwater catchment system that feeds water into an underground water cistern which they use to water their enormous permaculture garden. They use no municipal water to irrigate their plants.

Indoors, they've installed a grey water recycling system that allows them to filter and clean water from the shower & bath and then reuse it a second time to flush their toilets.

It was really interesting to see how this alternative building technique can result in such enormous energy savings! And to see that an existing home can fairly easily be retrofitted to be more energy efficient!

    Thanks for watching!

    Mat & Danielle

"When I build something, I build it as if it is meant for me and my family, as all the custom fluted trimwork and design choices express. I tried to stay true to classic vardo design, while putting my style and personality into it as well, and providing for other challanges such as reduced weight (1660lbs total, including trailer with 1650 lbs capacity) and increased insulation (R-13 in floor, 1/2" rigid foam everywhere else). The synthetic canvas top is waterproof and fire resistant. The construction is cedar and pine exterior (primer and three coats of high quality exterior paint), and all pine and plywood on the interior. The dutch door was custom built from two salvaged doors, and the windows are likewise salvaged."

"I built this Roma (gypsy) caravan styled travel trailer by hand. When this one sells, I’ll build another, or maybe a camper van, a housebus, a housetruck, or a tiny house. Who knows?

An Environmentally Friendly Home, With The Floors Are Hand Scraped Maple
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Jan 17, 2018
Have you seen this year’s HGTV Green Home in Denver, Colorado? It was “inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, combined with subtle nods to airplane design,” which I guess explains the wing over the front door. Let’s take a look around and see what you think. The floors are hand-scraped maple.

The living room sets the contemporary tone for the house. The kitchen continues the gray and yellow theme, which is a hot color combination right now. The laundry room doubles (triples?) as a home office and crafts studio, which I found a little odd. Do I want to work on a stool at a tiny desk while the laundry tumbles behind me? Probably not. And who is going to sit in those chairs, staring at the washer and dryer? My guess is that clothes are going to get piled on them in about ten minutes…

I spy another “subtle nod to airplane design” in the master bedroom, which is decorated in “Asian chic.”

The Family Room is a loft space at the top of the stairs and has a view of the Rockies. And then, after all the muted neutrals, grays and yellows, they hit us with a hot-pink Guest Room, which I’m still scratching my head over…

It really qualifies for one of my “One of these rooms is not like the others…” posts, doesn’t it? I mean, wow. My 8-year old daughter would love sleeping here. My brother-in-law who visits twice a year…not so much.

The patio was put in front of the house, “to encourage conversation with neighbors,” and features a gas fireplace:

For more information about the house, you can take the full tour and enter the sweepstakes on HGTV.com

Translucent Swiss barn-modern home regulates views & climate
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Jan 21, 2018
In small town on the outskirts of Basel, Switzerland, where the weather is highly changeable and the views are impacted by rural sprawl, architect Tito Herlach designed a semi-transparent home to give a family of five access to, and protection from their surroundings.

The home mimics the topology of a half-timbered farmhouse, but it\s wood frame is covered in corrugated plastic on the south and west sides which act as a “semi-permeable membrane”. At the front entrance this membrane is the only source of light to the unheated entryway behind it. Only the north and east sides of the home are covered in more insulating, opaque materials.

The interior footprint is small, relative to conventional Swiss homes, but it feels larger thanks to an indoor/outdoor space enclosed in wood framing, translucent plastic and a mechanically-movable screen. The interior was built in prefab wood panels, supported by one centered concrete wall which serves to anchor the open floor plan.
