From cramped hayloft to tiny, daylit modern studio in Porto
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Dec 11, 2016
When Portuguese architect Florêncio da Costa was asked to turn an old hayloft into a guesthouse, he created a clean, modern look with all white, wood and micro-cement, but left it rooted in the past: leaving the original granary structure and constructing the new elements using traditional joinery.

“He was born in a rural place, as was I,” explains his colleague at Oficina d’Arquitectura. “We are used to seeing old houses. The normal approach is to destroy and build new infrastructures, new houses. Our philosophy is different: ‘Okay, let’s use it. And let’s transform it, but not destroying it at all.’”

The tiny home reflects the tradition of the main house and the surrounding agrarian neighborhood of the Porto suburb of Santa Cruz do Bispo while embracing the modernism of clean lines and well-defined shapes.

Tracks of an old Frontier shepherd life: Great Basin Basques
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Dec 18, 2016
Today, in states like Idaho there are thousands of Basque Americans many of whose ancestors immigrated here a century ago to herd sheep. Henry Etcheverry is one of the last of the Basque sheepmen. His father, Jean Pierre, immigrated in 1929 from the Basque Country (a region in the Pyrenees partly in Spain and partly in France).

Boise, Idaho has the highest concentration of Basques outside the Basque Country. The Mayor is Basque and there’s an entire block dedicated to Basque businesses. Tony Eiguren runs the Basque Market- part store, part restaurant- with his wife Tara. https://www.thebasquemarket.com/

Many of the buildings on the Basque Block were once boarding houses for recent arrivals to the US. “If a person was immigrating over to the United States to Boise for example they’d get off the train a few blocks from here and come to a boarding house,” explains Annie Gavica of the Basque Museum (3 of her grandparents were Basque).

Today the Sheepherders Ball is still a popular Boise event (Tony met his wife Tara there) and the Basque Block still has a “fronton”, a court for playing Basque pelota, a type of handball played with a bare hand and a hard ball, something “quite painful” according to Gavica. https://www.basquemuseum.com/

At 66-years-old Etcheverry still works his sheep ranch- built up by his father and himself with permits to graze thousands and thousands of acres in Idaho and Wyoming- but these days, his shepherds aren’t Basque. “My shepherds are from Peru and this is an opportunity for them to come here and better their lives. They’re here and it’s quite a sacrifice.”

One of his shepherds, Olympio, has spent over a decade working here for Etcheverry. From May to September he lives in a sheep wagon- or sheep camp- in the mountains, following the sheep. Etcheverry brings him food and supplies every few days, but he spends most of his time alone, sleeping, eating and cooking in his tiny home on wheels. He uses a propane burners to cook, firewood stove for heating, a cooler as a refrigerator and washes his clothes by hand. Olimpio says he’s used to the lifestyle since he started in the same line of work as a young boy in Peru. He admits it can be lonely, but he points out the advantages of what Etcheverry calls a sacrifice. “It’s really beautiful to take care of animals. The countryside is beautiful.”

Etcheverry has no luck finding workers in nearby Boise or Salt Lake City. “When this way of life is over for me I doubt there is going to be anyone behind me here. It’s too hard. Saturday and Sunday. You do what you got to do. People don’t want to do that anymore.”

20 Small TV Rooms That Balance Style With Functionality
    Dream House

    Published on Dec 24, 2016
There was a time when the television was the focal point of the living room, with every piece of furniture being arranged around it! Many of us TV buffs still tend to do the same, but the modern trend has been to take the TV away from the living room or to hide it completely. While some have taken it to the bedroom and the family room, others have opted for gorgeous and at times stunning media rooms and home theaters that blow you away. It is either an over-the-top home theater, media room or the hidden TV nook that grace most contemporary interiors.

Owner-built Atlanta glass “treehouse” floats among hardwoods
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Dec 25, 2016
When the financial crisis hit in 2008, architects Mary Clare DeReuil & Carlos Tardio were without work, but determined to continue creating buildings. “We were scouring the city all the time looking for cheap land, land that no one wanted to deal with because it was problematic,” explains DeReuil. They finally picked up property near downtown Atlanta that was “problematic” and “unbelievably cheap” because there was no driveway access.

Over the course of 4 years, the two architects (Tardio Architecture) worked 10 hour days to create an experimental glass dream home using materials easily accessible in industrialized settings: steel beams, cast concrete, 2 by 6 milled lumber and lots of recycled glass. “We scrapped this thing together with personal loans, brother and sister loans, loan sharks, credit cards, we just did whatever and made it happen.”

Not wanting to cut down any of the mature trees on the property, DeReuil and Tardio designed the home around the trees. As a result the structure floats among the huge hardwoods and has been nicknamed the “Atlanta treehouse”. Tardio prefers “House of Doors” since “the structural system was derived from an exploration of doors”. All the doors in the home are made of heavy sheets of glass with Tardio’s proprietary pivot system which allows even a child to open them with ease (we, the faircompanies family, took the home for a test drive and our then 3-year-old could open them easily).

To help pay off all those loans DeReuil and Tardio use only the studio on the top floor (a secret pivoting door separates the two floors) and rent the lower floor on AirBnB.

In a tiny house it becomes especially important to think about the design and layout, from the size of your appliances, to storage for your dishes, gadgets, pots, pans, etc. So here some of favorite examples for your inspiration.

Young couple transforms old Loire cave in unique home/rental
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Jan 2, 2017
Alexis Lamoureux was looking for affordable housing for himself and his girlfriend Lotte van Riel when he rediscovered his great aunt’s old troglodyte home for sale by the local government in Amboise, France.

It had been abandoned for 35 years and in danger of collapse so the young couple picked it up for very little. Unable to get a bank loan, they decided to do as much of the work as possible themselves and to continue working (Lamoureux as a bartender) to pay for others to do the structural work.

Over the following four years, Lamoureux and van Riel- both previously inexperienced in the trades- learned to plumb, wire and tile and created a stunning, modern cave home. “We were lucky enough to have a project and focus on it so all the money we had we just invested it in the place,” explains Lamoureux. Adds van Riel, “We stopped traveling, we just worked, worked, worked.”

When they finished their own home, they turned a second cave on the property, at one time used to store coal- into a nightly rental. https://www.facebook.com/amboisetrogl...

I understand that this particular car/lifestyle/organization may not work for everybody, but it's been wonderful for me! :)

Shipping Container House With LOFT HAMMOCK!

So cute inside! We live in this little house for two days and the hammock in ceiling kept the girls entertained for hours. It was really a nice little place to stay and if you added closets in I think it would be a great house for a small family to live in full time.

LA coliving: PodShare's permeable intersection between social/privacy
    Kirsten Dirksen

    Published on Jan 8, 2017
Calling it “a social network with an address”, Los Angeles entrepreneur Elvina Beck created PodShare, a coliving experiment where dozens of “Podestrians”- travelers, mobile workers or new arrivals to the city- share a communal space filled with sleeping pods or “bunk beds for adults”.

Beck, who built the first PodShare in 2012 with her father, wanted to respond to her demographic’s rejection of widespread home ownership and embrace of the sharing economy. She set out to transform the American bunk bed, creating a more open (and co-ed) version of the Japanese capsule hotels.

For $40 to $50 per night (or discounted weekly and monthly prices), Podestrians can choose a bottom or top sleeping pod (equipped with a lamp and a small flatscreen television with Internet access) along with all the shared spaces, including a kitchen (with communal food, and space for individual storage in the pantry and fridge), bathroom, showers (toiletries included) and a communal lounge.

Currently, there are 3 locations in Los Angeles, but Beck sees the model as scalable across the country and, similar to a gym, members could have overnight access at any location.

PodShare doesn’t own any of the locations, but instead rents empty space from landlords. They stay away from residentially-zoned properties and instead focus on converting commercial or live/work spaces. Beck and her partner Kera Package have evolved the pods so they are now modular and totally mobile so they can go up and down at any location when a lease ends.

In reflection of the sharing economy’s privilege of “access” over “ownership”, Beck tries to outfit each location with extras like bicycles and instruments. She hopes each location will eventually have bigger extras, like a gym or pool. Currently, the Hollywood location even has a recording studio and editing bay.

    Gorgeous Tiny House Bathrooms Ideas
    Dream House

    Published on Jan 9, 2017
In a tiny house you’ll find normal flush toilets, RV toilets, commercial composting toilets, incinerating toilets, and lots of Lovable Loos (sawdust toilets). Sometimes the shower shares the same space with the toilet – a wet bath – other times it’s curtained-off. Sinks seem to be optional when folks are comfortable using the kitchen sink – but others prefer a tiny dedicated sink in the bathroom.
