A small guest cottage in a vineyard in New Zealand
Chambourcin Cottage was designed and built by Hawke’s Bay architect Steve McGavock. Its vaulted ceilings and native timber features throughout were inspired by renowned New Zealand architect John Scott. Newly renovated and tastefully decorated in 2016 by the talented Bibby+Brady interior design team, the furnishings, bedding, fabrics, kitchenware and amenities provide a warm, inviting, holiday experience.

This Design Won the 2015 International Green Interior Award for Residential Renovation
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Aug 24, 2017
    Jill's House,

This design won the 2015 International Green Interior Award for Residential-Renovation. The design converts a cold, poorly lit and damp terrace house into a comfortable, functional and beautiful home. Connections with garden spaces are much improved, and excellent passive solar design enhances the feel of the house immeasurably.

North facing living areas, natural light and ventilation, thermal mass, retrofit insulation, double glazing and an excellent connection with the garden transform spaces to respond to modern lifestyles and understandings of the local climate.

Despite an existing north wall along the boundary, sunlight is brought deep into the house via clerestory windows that soar above the kitchen, doubling to encourage the ‘stack effect’ for ventilation, and to bring more interesting internal volumes to further distinguish the extension from the original Victorian home.

A courtyard allows light, ventilation and garden views to all rooms of the house, while the setback of the living room from the north boundary allows for a series of north facing casement windows to naturally heat the living space in winter, and efficiently ventilate it in summer.

Jill’s house is comfortable, beautiful, low maintenance and accessible - allowing for her changing lifestyle and producing a long-term, sustainable home.

The colours throughout the house were inspired by Jill's favourite Derwent pencils from her childhood.

Abandoned West Virginia: Forgotten River Ghost Town
    PEXPED

    Published on May 26, 2017
Explore lost America with Pexped. Walk into abandoned settlements, schools, hospitals, towns and more while learning about the history of each location. From the twisted medical practices of a sanatorium or the strict rules of a boarding school, Pexped will take you back in time and show you the America that was left behind.

In today's Abandoned America, we explore the forgotten town of Thurmond, West Virginia. Laying within the New River Gorge, Thurmond was once a rich and thriving "Boom" town. After coal began to move away from the gorge, so did the residents. What's left of the town are a few buildings and railroad tracks.

Super Modern Off Grid Tiny House - Full Tour
    Exploring Alternatives

    Published on Sep 3, 2017
Patrick and Thomas from the Rewild Homes Team built the Blue Heron tiny house to be completely off-grid with a Morso wood stove, 6 x 285 Watt solar panels, rainwater collection, and a Separett composting toilet.

The house is built on a 24 foot, 2 axle trailer, and it measures approximately 200 square feet.

The roof is gabled, which is a slightly more expensive design than a shed slope roof, but it allows for headroom on both sides of the sleeping loft.

Instead of a ladder, Rewild Homes has been getting lots of requests from their clients for stairs, so they've incorporated storage drawes, and they also used the space to store the large solar battery bank above the axles since the batteries weigh close to 1000 lbs.

The solar power system is very large for a tiny house, and they did this primarily because they wanted to run the refrigerator on solar power. They use propane to heat water and for the cooktop.

For ventilation, they have an industrial style ceiling fan to circulate heat and air, and they have a hood fan above the stove, and a vent in the bathroom to help keep humidity levels down.

The exterior of the home is cedar, which can withstand the damp British Columbia climate.

Rewild Homes is in Nanaimo, BC: http://www.rewildhomes.com/

    136. Earthship living in a cold, desolate, Canadian winter
    Green Energy Futures

    Published on Feb 15, 2016
We return to a familiar place, the Kinney Family Earthship in southern Alberta, to see how a passive solar heated home holds up in the dark, cold Canadian prairie winter. This Earthship harvests it's own rainwater, treats its own wastewater, produces its own solar electricity and grows its own food. It's an off-grid radically sustainable home made out of recycled tires, cans and other materials and buffeted by the Earth on three sides. You may be able to survive the apocalypse in this home, but can it withstand the cold, Canadian prairie winter where temperatures dip to -30 degrees celsius? Find out as we revisit the Kinney family Earthship on a cold, cloudy day in January.

A Small Coastal Home in Laig Bay, Scotland, Absolutely Small House Design Ideas
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Sep 4, 2017
Laig Beach Bothy sits right on the beach of Laig Bay. With the Isle of Rum rising majestically out of the sea beyond, Laig beach is one of the most spectacular in Scotland. It's perfect for swimming and long, lazy paddles. Made up of a mixture of quartz black basalt and white shell, the sand constantly changes with swirling lines and fern-like patterns. Photographers and children love it.

Its open-plan living space has a large sliding glass door and floor to ceiling windows, making the most of the views of Rum. A large wooden deck area extends the living space out into the open - perfect for sunny morning breakfasts and evening drinks. The sea breeze keeps the midges at bay.

Sleeping up to four people in a ground floor double room and mezzanine twin room; with solid oak flooring and custom built furniture, Laig Beach Bothy is designed to be light, bright and contemporary. There's even a sofa bed if you want to squeeze another one in. We've made our bathroom that little bit more luxurious by adding cosy underfloor heating.

Cosy wood burning stove, solar hot water heating and Eigg's own renewable electricity means you'll be warm as toast as well as eco-friendly.

Laig Beach Bothy sits on the very edge of Laig Beach, tucked away from the main road but within easy walking or cycling distance from Cleadale and the rest of Eigg. If you don't want to venture out to the shop, fresh bread, herbs, eggs, salad and vegetables can be delivered from our farm.

Laig Beach Bothy has free wifi. All bed linen and towels are provided. The kitchen is well equipped so you can make the most of local fish and other produce available.

A 435 Square Feet Home in Trinity, Newfoundland, Canada | Amazing Small House Design
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Sep 5, 2017
    The Crow's Nest

The desire to have as many windows as possible inspired McIntyre's main house. "By echoing the architecture of the early schoolhouses in Newfoundland outports, I could capture maximum light from oversized windows but in a style that didn’t depart from community tradition." she says. "My neighborhood, a Newfoundland outport, has a quiet, slower pace with an emphasis on community and creativity."

McIntyre paired marine blues with creams and used artist's canvas as couch slipcovers and drapes for the large windows. "My favorite part of my house is anywhere I can look out over the harbor, across at the town of Trinity, the lighthouse and the ocean beyond," she says. "Fortunately, this view is visible everywhere except from the bathroom."

One of her biggest challenges was fitting a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a bedroom and an office into 435 square feet. McIntyre designed Murphy beds to allow for a multifunctional space and a focal point for art. "Given my love of art, I need as much wall space as possible," she says.

To achieve an aged look on the plank floors, McIntyre had a mill remove ⅜ inch off 2-by-6 spruce boards that she then lightly sanded and painted a deep marine blue.

When the bed is flipped down for sleeping, McIntyre wakes up to a panoramic view of the ocean. "I experience sheer delight each day looking out at the spectacular view I have," she says.

Her home office is tucked in a corner nook in the kitchen, which, though small, has a beautiful view of the water.

Keep 'em coming Searcher! I love tiny houses etc. The problem for me [I live in a small house now] is that if we lived in a tiny house I would need a giant barn to keep our stuff in.

As a young person back in '70s I dreamed of affordable housing for 1 or 2 people, the huge rents in the Chicago area were hard to manage, and almost all the apartments at the time started at 2 bedrooms, 1 bedroom was rare, and the occasional studio apartments went for more money than a 1 bedroom and were off the market quick. Forget a small house, you had to go far away from jobs to find a little house.

A Eighteenth Century Cottage Stone in the Cotswolds | Amazing Small House Design Ideas
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Sep 10, 2017
Needing a weekend escape from their busy lives and stressful careers in London, designer Caroline Holdaway and her photographer partner, Fatimah Namdar, relish the peace and quiet of their eighteenth-century cottage in the Cotswolds

Caroline and Fatimah had previously seen Mullions only from the outside, dismissing it on the grounds that it had no garden to speak of, and had a rear extension built into the bank, which they feared might be dark. However, after more disheartening months of searching, they decided to take a look inside. It was the feel of the place and the unexpected light inside that won them over.

They quickly laid bare the interior, leaving a blank canvas to work on. 'I always start with the floor,' explains Caroline. 'We found this one on Lochnagar Street, in the East End - planks from an industrial building that still showed yellow numbers and the imprint of machinery. It was summer, so we laid the board out in the garden and Velcro-padded the lot. This technique removed the yellow numbers while keeping the rest of the character and markings in the boards. Just what we wanted.'

Once laid, the floor was coloured and finished. Care was taken to change the direction of the planks in different areas to add authenticity, so that it looks as if the floor has always been there. They worked with just one 'wonderful builder' called Gordon Anderson, now retired. 'Gordon absolutely shared our aesthetic,' explains Caroline. 'He too rooted around reclamation yards and found the deep stone for the window sills, which had previously been laminate.' Clyde radiators were installed, although the Scandinavian wood-burning stove in the sitting room is so effective that they barely need them. 'It's essential in the winter when we suffer frequent power cuts, because the stove ensures you can have heat and even fry an egg on the marble top.'

The kitchen is tiny 'but perfectly formed', with the same floorspace as a larger kitchen with an island would have, and it adequately suits their needs. They cook on an oil-fired Rayburn, which stands in an alcove - '20 minutes and you can have boiling water', says Caroline. Charles Hurst built the kitchen cupboards, and the elm shelves, of which they are especially fond of, were made by Gordon's son, Gordon junior. As were the shelves throughout the house that are used for simple but effective display.

Upstairs, they replaced an avocado bathroom suite with a white one and took out the low modern ceiling in the main bedroom. The first planning request to reveal the apex was turned down, until Caroline spotted that the original timbers held a trace of distemper. This settled any argument that the timbers had not originally been part of the room, and consent was given. Now the bedroom is light and airy, the apex clad in reclaimed matchboarding giving it a period feel.

The dining table - essentially a rough-hewn piece of elm - sits so perfectly in what the estate agents grandly called a 'dining hall'. 'It nearly made us crash the car when Fatimah spied it in a shop window down Church Street Market - exactly the signature piece we had been looking for.' The Scandinavian chairs around it have been collected from various places, and since they were not originally a suitable height for dining, the legs were extended by Gordon.

But the underlying DNA of the cottage is the collection of pottery that Caroline and Fatimah have made over the years. Plates, bowls and jugs by Michael Taylor - a new find - and Richard Batterham dishes complement the jewel-like green of pieces collected from a Biot pottery in the South of France

Low stone walls, post and rail fencing and old roses now enclose the front garden. 'The pleasure of standing on our tiny handkerchief lawn and looking at the magnificent, enormous skies is a privilege,' says Caroline. 'I am excited every time I leave London with the thought of being here. It is a very welcoming cottage and very giving. When we are really busy at work, it becomes more important to be here and I sleep here so well; it is dark and totally quiet'.

A Small Contemporary Cabin on Orcas Island in Eastsound, Washington | Small House Design Ideas
    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Sep 10, 2017
Small Contemporary Cabin on Orcas Island

This is an 804 sq. ft. contemporary cabin in Eastsound, WA that’s available to rent on Airbnb.

Perch is located on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands of Washington. First built in 2011, Perch was originally designed as a year-round familygetaway and a vacation rental during the busy island summer season. Tucked into a steep rocky hillside, it overlooks East Sound

The goal was to design an indoor/outdoor great room that
provides areas for both gathering and solo moments. Banks of 8’ tall sliders open the living areas to decks and a window nook serves as a getaway spot or an overnight guest bed. Two private bedrooms bookend a full bath and laundry area.

Building on an island is challenging with high labor costs, added outlay for ferry delivery of materials and costly sitework. Leonard went throughnthree designs and finally a process of value-driven design decisions to simplify yet keep a cozy comfortable space. By doing so, she met her $200,000 build budget and spent an additional $30,000 to excavate and pave the steep driveway. That may sound like a lot for an 800sf home, but on this island, it is not unusual. The cost could be greatly reduced if built on the mainland.

Some of those value-driven design decisions for this stick built home include:

Passive solar – large expanse of glass faces south, minimal windows face north

Building Foundation: 28′ square footprint – efficient shape with minimal corners

Shed roof: Simplest roof shape. Overhangs create shelter and protective eaves. Insulated joist system with marine plywood ceiling/soffits. Vaulted ceiling throughout rises 8′ to 12′.

*Minimize interior walls and doors: *Use of wardrobes in bedrooms opens space & saves cost to build closets. Laundry faces into the small hall.

*Kitchen & bath:* Ikea cabinets and “Paperstone” countertops. Designed with straight runs – eliminates those expensive corners and allows the local finish contractor to install instead of importing specialty contractors to the island. Bath tile installed by the owner.

*Low Maintenance:* Prefinished Hardie panel products and standing-seam metal roof. Cork flooring. Marmoleum bath flooring. Raw cedar decks with hogwire railings.

*Heating*: Low profile convection wall units for flexibility to heat only those areas needed. Living area has a reversible ceiling fan for summer and winter. Through use of overhangs and placement of windows and doors, cooling summer breezes move through home, eliminating need for mechanical cooling. (Orcas also has lower summer temps & humidity than most US locations) Leonard’s success with the home and joy in living in 800 sf, led her to start an online site (ilovesmallhomes.com) offering small home plans. Perch is the first plan with several others currently on the boards. She is currently researching capabilities of area prefab companies to enable a plan purchaser to have an option to have it built and delivered as a modular home. You can rent Perch on Airbnb and test drive this home plan!

    Tiny House Lover

    Published on Sep 14, 2017
This is an 890 sq. ft. stone cottage. It’s located in France

This is a small cottage in the heart of the National Parc Naturelle de Haute Languedoc in the south of France. It’€™s situated in a tiny monumental village on a hill top with a small chapel of 1000 years old and beautiful views over the hills. The cottage itself is a 17th century stone farmers sheepfold / sheep stable which had been abandoned for some decades. It’s now been transformed into a small house. It’s been renovated in the original regional style using only ecological materials and traditional building methods. It took 10 years of hard work replacing the roof, partly rebuilding stone walls, adding windows and insulation. It’s 890 sq. ft. are divided over 2 floors and a loft. The first level has the kitchen with a door to the garden, a fire place and the bathroom with a bath tub and a compost toilet. The second level (street level) has the living and a staircase to the loft. The loft has room for a double bed.
