They should make a coin series based on our historical documents. Start with the DOI, then Constitution and Bill of Rights and each Amendment. That would keep the mint busy for years.

Agreed, but it's a first, and I may take a big bet that this will sell out fast, with a large aftermarket as people want to get their hands on this coin.

I think it will be available for a long time, because 100,000 is a high mintage limit for such an expensive coin.

I won't be speculating on this one, but I will buy one to put away. I like the idea behind the series.

I don't think it's very attractive, but I'm thinking it might be a hot item.
What do you suppose it'll go for from the mint?

One only needs to ask a simple question...would you rather buy this coin, or a different 1-oz gold coin of any other variety at the Mint?

It is a well-known concept that quality of design has a direct impact on both sales and secondary market prices, and most signs point to a negative impact for this coin.

If I had the budget to buy one more 1-oz gold coin from the Mint, I would probably lean towards the unc gold eagle.

^^ Where in that article does it say the coin can be pre-ordered? I see just the opposite.....

You are correct. Somehow I read that line from the article as pre-order, not purchased. Sorry, for the confusion. I was still working on my first cup of coffee. I should know better than to post until I've had at least two!

I don't think pre-purchase would be necessary anyway, this ain't gonna sellout in 2 minutes like the 2017-S SAE Proof.

I am going to get one. This will be a series I think, but agreed this is a risk here. Perhaps having the entire series in hand will be worth more than having some of them, or do I get two, send them both in for grading, looking for that first strike MS-70 for one of the two submissions.

I fell into this trap awhile ago, luckily it worked out. Well it did one time anyway.

I bought 2 of an early liberty spouse raw. Ooooh, send it in for grading myself, save some money....
    I got (1) 69, (1) 70. Woopee.

I bought (1) of the kennedy 3/4 oz coins raw. Ooooh, send it in for grading myself, save some money....
    I got a 70. Luckeeeeee.

You'll spend $3280 for 2 coins and about $100-$150 to grade on the hope of a 70.

If you want a 70, just buy it. If you believe in the coin (series), then it should be worth it.

My understanding is that there will be a high relief portraits of liberty minted every two years. I don't know the length of the series. The first one was in 2015.

As we speak an uncirculated gold Eagle of Buffalo will cost approximately $1300. Therefore, one is paying about $340 extra for the numismatic aspects of the coin. While this is not a trivial amount, many will choose to pay it. The operative word here is choose, as in Choice. 2c

Yup, Ive always bought with the thought of resale in first place, just don't see it on this coin.

FWIW I paid a total of $1660.95 for it but it was worth the $400+ premium that I paid for it as a collector.

Yeah that is a good point. It will probably be on sale for a long while after release just like the Centennial Standing Liberty and Walking Liberty gold coins, which are still currently on sale well after they first became available to buy from usmint.gov.

The motto here is to buy what you like and, as a collector, that is exactly what I did with this coin. I have 400+ reasons (i.e. $400+ over spot premium) to keep this coin. An occasional gold splurge is not a bad thing IMO.

Got mine last night, pic is OK, coin is nicer in person. Not nearly as high relief as the first ULC coin. Only one, I don't think grading is in the cards here 225 Obverse.jpg 225 Reverse cropped.jpg

As a result of spot gold moving above and currently staying above $1250, the price of the 225th Anniversary American Liberty 1-oz gold coin is currently priced at $1690. I think that price increase was done today. That is up from the $1640 price that is was original priced at when it first became available to order at usmint.gov.

I also read elsewhere online that the 1st day sales (April 6) of this 225th Anniversary American Liberty 1-oz gold coin was just under 15,000 coins sold on April 6. I also noticed that the US Mint cumulative sales figures did not update this past Tuesday. The latest cumulative sales figures update is still the week of April 2, 2017 instead of the week of April 9, 2017. I would expect the week of April 9, 2017 figures to indicate how many of these coins were sold from April 6, 2017 to April 9, 2017.

14,285 coins (14% of total authorized mintage) were sold on April 6 ,2017 (1st day that they were available for sale at USMint.gov website) according to Coinweek:

    https://www.coinweek.com/us-mint-news/first-day-sales-2017-american-liberty-high-relief-gold-coin/

There is (as far as I know) no information on how many were sold between April 7 to April 15 but I am going to make a WAG in that not many were sold in that time period and the main reason being the price (currently priced at $1690 + shipping).

Well, with many saying that they will pass and that the coin is 'ugly', I was hoping that it would have a mintage of 10,000 or less. No such luck and now I'm hoping that it stays under the 15,000 mark. Then I will let time be the deciding factor as far as resale/profit.
In this case though, I purchased for the collection. If fiat allows, I may purchase another for the resale market.

I'm new to the collector type of bullion.
I'm hoping someone who follows this part of the gold market with more experience can provide some context.
Is less than 18% sold of the total mintage in 2 weeks a disappointing start for a collector coin or is it about average?

Glad you guys like the coins, Im not truly a collector but a investor and buy everything with an eye towards selling it down the road in a few years, now mabye less since at 67 one cant be sure how long God will let me stay here, I used to look 10 years out but now I try to stay 2/3 years out with gains thoughts. So true my buys on new issues are next to nil but I still pick up the old art bars and the likes for the flip and have the just plain silver looking for the big pop that seems will never come. Enjoy your coins for a long time guys

What I highlighted in bold has worked well for me flipping a lot of my duplicate old silver art bars as well as certain ATB pucks and key date SAE's on ebay. I used a small amount of the profits from those silver art bar sales to help pay for the premium for the American Liberty 225th Anniversary 1-oz gold coin.

I am a collector first and foremost but I am also a reseller. Buying the American Liberty 225th gold satisfies my "inner gold collector".

I would say the sales are not unexpected given the current state of the market and the price of this coin. If you like this coin from a collector standpoint (I received mine and feel the execution of the coin is superb) buy it. If you are looking to flip or invest, move on.

    Thanks for the input.
I did buy one for resale. I thought the presentation of the coin was excellent and the coin itself exceeded my expectation. Nicer in person then in photos. I've already sold the coin. I'm debating buying one for myself. I will probably wait a couple months and see what summer brings for the gold price. I'm thinking we're a little toppy here in the 1280's. I'll wait it out.

That was the 1st thing that I thought when I got my coin and took it out of the presentation box. It seems to me that most of the time, the "stock photos" that the US Mint uses to promote a particular coin do not do the coin true justice in appearance.
