Fall and winter bring on the chore of putting up meat in the pantry. We harvest chickens, sheep and deer from the land. All of these animals are used to the best of our ability for not only meat but the hides of the sheep and deer for tanning. I am using a Blue English Fleshing system for fleshing out my hides.

Episode 10: The homestead builds an outhouse for guests to use when they come camping in the spring and fall. Not everyone is into using a composting toilet so we build a simple yet efficient outhouse for visitors. It's been just over a year that we arrived on the land that has become An American Homestead. We've been super busy. In this last episode of the season, we take a look back at everything we have accomplished in 12 months time. The result of all the hard work is a homestead we can be proud of and share with others.

Our first wind turbine is up and running. We chose the Primus 27ft Tower available at http://readymaderesources.com - The install was easy and the hookups very simple. Primus goes out of their way to make an almost plug and play wind turbine with very little hassle.

Our chickens have been producing between 15 and 20 eggs per day. We don't use any lights in the chicken coop. We attribute this feat to the extra raw protein we are feeding them from our meal worm farm. The meal worms are doing great and producing like crazy!

Greenhouse Heating with a Double Barrel Wood Stove

I've had a lot of questions about how I heat my greenhouses. I use double barrel wood stoves. These are easy to assemble, consisting of a store bought kit and 55 gallon drums. I have 2 different setups in my greenhouses, allowing me to heat over 110 feet in length. The stoves are modified so that they are airtight and fresh air is supplied from outside with a blower. The blower is controlled by a thermostat, making this function much like a typical household furnace. In this video, I explain exactly how I have it all setup, and also provide a few tips and suggestions that could help anyone looking to heat a greenhouse, shop, or garage.

It took us less than 10 minutes to put this simple and effective deer feeder together. Anyone can build this. It will probably cost you less than $20 to build from your local hardware store. Next time you go hunting, use something simple like this to bring in those bucks and does. Why spend money on an expensive auto feeder?

The winter is when you need to be working your garden and getting it ready for spring. It's so important to be adding nutrients and amendments back in your garden during the fall and winter so the plants in the spring have replenished materials to draw energy from. Each year these materials will have be broken down further and each year you add more on top. It's the exact same way the forest works to support the trees and plants you find there. More garden videos coming soon!

There have been a number of fruit trees on the property that have needed saving because of encroaching cedars. This one is a Mulberry Tree and it bore fruit last year. Whenever we have freed fruit trees from surrounding vegetation, they seem to really flourish the following year. So we will look for a good crop from this tree during the coming summer.

What happens when something breaks on the homestead? YOU FIX IT! Homesteading is about learning new skills. Being self sufficient is about relying more on you instead of always going to someone else. We live in a day and age where if you have enough money, you can always pay someone to fix your problems. The result is that you find yourself always being a dependent to those around you. Homesteading is about breaking that dependency.

Mass Heater For Greenhouse - An American Homestead

We have been going back and forth trying to figure out an effective and efficient heating method for our aquaponics system in our greenhouse. I think we finally have a solution that works. We decided on a barrel stove kit and 55 gallon drum barrel. It's a great way to recycle an old drum and heat our greenhouse at the same time. The whole thing was put together for less than $90. The kit was purchased off ebay.

Working the pastures is a task that spans the entire year. It is so important to make sure the pastures are healthy so that in turn the animals that graze on them are healthy. Keeping the beneficial grasses growing in a stress free environment will provide us with healthy stress free livestock.

This is a rare storm for the southern Ozarks. But we are all staying warm and the sheep are getting looked after as we wait for the remaining lambs to get here. We hope you are staying warm wherever you are!

Persimmons, Cedars and Gardens - An American Homestead

We are busy clearing cedars and brush away from all of our fruiting persimmon trees so that we have a good and easy harvest next year. Along with that comes a lot of debris that we can use on the homestead or share with our new neighbor! Take a look at Matt's garden!

How We Germinate Peppers - An American Homestead

    https://youtu.be/HrnoDd22DQc

    Published on Mar 17, 2015
Sprouting and germinating peppers can prove to be difficult unless you have heating lambs or florescent grow lights over seed trays. Peppers are usually grown in warmer climates anyway and so those of us who are farther north, may have issues getting them to sprout year after year...especially if you don't have electricity.
