You're Not A Prepper If You Don't Do This
    An American Homestead

    Published on Jun 21, 2016
I hear and see all kinds of talk from "preppers" about guns and knives and stocking food but very little about water. Water for drinking, bathing, and growing food. Water IS LIFE. If you're more concerned about Zombies than water, you're going to fail.

There are too many faces on youtube who love to sit and talk to you about what you should be doing. But what are they doing? What are they building? Do you ever see them do any real work with results? They're posers. Any real prepper and survivalist will be a homesteader first.

Much of the knowledge we have about growing I learned over the years of watching John Kohler at the Growing Your Greens Youtube Channel! We love permaculture and gardening. This show proves it!

Fuel Reserves When The Grid Goes Down
    An American Homestead

    Published on Jul 8, 2016
Gasoline and Diesel is one commodity that the average guy cannot reproduce when the grid goes down. It's a really good idea to have a strategic oil reserve that you can utilize to make that transition if/when the SHTF. Ethanol and Wood Gas are great alternatives but even then, a strategic reserve should be a priority for a family in today's world.

Major Logging Operation Down The Road
    An American Homestead

    Published on Jul 13, 2016
A nearby land owner is logging a large tract of land nearby. They are really doing some clearing and taking most of the trees down. Logging is big business around here with most of the wood being used for pallet lumber or tie lumber to be used on railroads.

With so many milling operations in the area, they produce an amazing amount of waste material in the form of woodchips, slab wood or saw dust as by-products. These materials are almost free for the taking to anyone who wants them.

We use these free/cheap materials in so many ways on the homestead.

I don't go into town except for once a week to do business or buy some grocer items and also to volunteer for a food pantry ministry there. It's a small town of about 2500 people.

Even pioneers needed to meet up at trading posts from time to time to get supplies and things they could not produce on their own.

Season 3 Episode 7 - An American Homestead - Trucks and Tractors
    An American Homestead

    Published on Jul 21, 2016
This week on an american homestead. Trucks and Tractors. We take a look at what helps make the workload of the American homesteader lighter than those in the past. Plus, Joann makes something special from last years county fair.

Our Massey Ferguson tractor is the workhorse of the homestead. We use it to cut brush, to run our saw mill, lift heavy logs, and so much more. Our pickups also do a lot of work of hauling manure, wood chips, hay, transporting animals and pulling trailers. We don't know what we would do without them. Our trucks and tractor make life easier on the homestead.

    Published on Jul 22, 2016
This is just some footage of the vintage 1940's Sears Roebuck M14 Foley Belsaw Sawmill cutting up one of our homestead harvested red oaks. We cut up 3 red oaks that day. 2 of them were over 8 feet long and another that was 6 feet long. They were all from the same tree. The lumber will be used to build a pavilion over the top of the mill.

    Homestead Handguns

Zac carries a Glock 17 in 9mm and Jaimie carries a Springfield Armory XD subcompact in 9mm. Both are usually loaded with Corbon Pow'Rball ammo with the first round being CCI snakeshot.

There are lots of reasons why we carry guns on the homestead. We have lions and bears always passing through. And with small children running around, we make sure we can defend ourselves against any predators that may take an interest. Also we have many poisonous snake that we shoot every year around the homes.

Absolute Proof That Neem Oil Works!
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 10, 2016
This Garden experiment with our cabbage patch proves without a shadow of a doubt that Neem Oil and Dr. Bronners Sal Suds works to keep insects and garden pests from destroying your plants.

I'm not a paid spokesman for this product. They have not paid me any money to endorse them. I'm just showing you what works after 3 years of use, my results are conclusive that Neem Oil and Sal Suds work great together at keeping garden pests at bay.

But what happens if you could no longer purchase Neem oil? Are Cabbages and most brassicas plants indigenous to the area in which you live? Let's explore the options of growing what works well in your area to begin with.

How To Beat Poison Ivy FAST!
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 11, 2016
None of this video constitutes medical advice. If you are sick, please contact a medical doctor.

All of the locals around here know how to treat poison ivy. You harvest and use a plant called Jewelweed (sometimes called Touch-Me-Not) and it clears up this painful and agonizing rash FAST!

You can use it to make:
    1. Just rub the plant on the rash (works good)
    2. Salves (works good)
    3. Drink as a tea (works better)
    4. Drink as a tincture (works super fast)
    5. Apply topically as a tincture (works super fast)

If you want to beat poison Ivy and do it fast with the least amount of torment possible, THIS is the plant you need to get. Creation often times gives us the plants we need to treat certain ailments and in this case, they grow RIGHT next to each other.

Season 3 Episode 9 - An American Homestead - Having Alternatives
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 18, 2016
It's always good to have many different ways to achieve a goal. Even for making your coffee in the morning or cooking breakfast. Some of the modern utilities of life can be taken away at a moments notice. Do you have options that will allow your family to adapt?

Jaimie and Zac also begin to pull items out to submit to the county fair. It's our third year in a row submitting items that we have grown and produced here on the homestead.

Why I Don't Like Working In The Woods During Summer
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 19, 2016
I love being in the woods. But during the summer months, there are a number of dangers that my 9mm handgun is no match against. Namely, Hornets and Yellow Jackets. So my preferred time of working in the woods is fall, winter and early spring.

I got away this time without any injuries. But I had to go back and get my truck and do so without waking up the giant that I knew wasn't that far away.

Have you ever come close to a hornets nest?

    Solar Battery Charger Surprise INSIDE!
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 25, 2016
What is the deal with me and insects that sting? Thankfully, I again come away unscathed. Our battery charger was acting up and usually that means that something has decided to make a home inside.

Well, it's time to serve the eviction notice.

NOTE: Compressed air cans are GREAT for stunning and removing stinging insects out of a device like this rather than using a bunch of sticky chemicals that could also effect your delicate electronics. Simply turn the compressed air can upside down and hit them with the liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen with easily evaporate and leave behind your stunned victim ready to be removed by hand without issue.

ALSO, pieces of equipment like this will gather dust and dust build up will generate heat which could effect its performance. It's possible to run these through the dishwasher rinse cycle and then allow to dry before using it again. Just a tip.

Syrup Evaporator Review - Cottage Craft Works
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 26, 2016
We have used the Cottage Craft Works Maple Syrup Evaporator for both maple syrup and water bath canning. And soon we will give it a go for the Sorghum syrup that we will make in the fall.

So far this evaporator has been top notch with only a few suggested improvements perhaps. Folks, this is a once in a lifetime purchase. If you take care of it and use it according to the manufacturers suggestions, it will provide years of production for your family. This is a perfect size for the backyard hobby syrup producer and water bath canner.

Off Grid Living - Shiitake Mushrooms - Growing And Harvesting
    An American Homestead

    Published on Aug 29, 2016
For the last 2 years we have been experimenting with growing shiitake mushrooms. These are something we really enjoy on the homestead and so now we want to expand our production.

This summer, we are expanding out shiitake mushroom logs so that we can have more for next fall. We are also planning on inoculating our garden with wine cap mushrooms that also taste delicious.

Growing some types of mushrooms can be a very easy and low maintenance task. I encourage you to try it sometime.

The Modern Sorghum Press - Unboxing
    An American Homestead

    Published on Sep 8, 2016
Back in the early days of the pioneers and American homesteaders, SUGAR was a commodity that was hard to come by. White sugar was only reserved for the very rich. For everyone else, if you wanted sweets, you had to find a honey tree or grow Sorghum.

Homesteaders would come together a few times in the fall and bring their freshly harvested sorghum and process it with a horse drawn sorghum press.

What if you never had to buy sugar again but relied on the syrup of the sorghum cane to make your pies, cookies and sweeten your jam?

This is the Cane Juicer from Tubobiz and Canemachines.com.

    Propane Torch For The Homestead

REASONS FOR A HOMESTEAD TORCH: http://www.grit.com/tools/hand-tools/...

I used to remember Home Improvement show back in the 90's when they got a new tool. We have a new tool on the homestead. Besides preserving wood, the propane torch has a long list of uses around homesteads.

    - Disinfecting poultry cages. "There are no residues. We don't have to worry about contaminating our food supply," says Susan Watkins, extension poultry specialist at the University of Arkansas.
    - Burning grass out from under wire fences, instead of tearing up the plastic cutting string or weed whacker blades on the fence wire.
    - Heating tar, asphalt and roofing materials.
    - Drying sand, soil and other construction materials.
    - Removing paint, oil, grease, plastic and other materials from metal and other nonflammable materials.
    - Burning heavy vegetation and other debris in ditches, culverts and pond edges, brush, stumps, starting burn barrels, brush piles, campfires and backfires.

5 Tips For Making Great Wine - Off Grid

This is just a quick video showing how easy it is to assemble the Clawhammer Supply 8 Gallon Stainless Steel Distiller. This piece of equipment is an absolute joy to work with and we can't wait to put this into operation.

Running a piece of equipment like this over an open fire can be a bit tricky but we have figured out how to successfully pressure can over an open fire. I think we can figure this out as well.

The assembly of this distiller is very easy and the biggest feature is that ALL THE PARTS are made with 304 food grade stainless steel. Many of their competitors are not using this same high quality stainless steel. When you buy a product like this, you want it to last for years to come.
