Bannon’s Breitbart tears into Trump after Afghanistan speech

Articles liken the president's approach to Obama's, and blame the national security adviser for the tone of the address.

    By HENRY C. JACKSON

    08/22/2017 12:06 AM EDT

Breitbart seems ready for one of Steve Bannon’s famed “wars.”

Just minutes after President Donald Trump concluded his Afghanistan policy speech Monday night, the conservative site took an aggressive, critical approach to the address and Trump’s new policy. A banner headline blasted the president’s decision to extend the U.S. military commitment in Afghanistan as a “flip-flop” that “reverses course.”

Articles likened him to his predecessor, President Barack Obama — a known sore spot for Trump.

Monday’s address in front of service members in Fort Meyer, Virginia, was a first, big test of what Breitbart will do now that Bannon, the former White House chief strategist, has returned to run the site he left to join Trump’s White House bid.

The new, re-Bannoned Breitbart didn’t seem to hold back at all.

“Trump’s ‘America First’ Base Unhappy with Flip-Flop Afghanistan Speech,” blared one headline.

The lead of the main story contained a series of subtle digs: “President Trump unveiled his plan for Afghanistan after seven months of deliberation Monday evening, announcing tweaks around the edges of the current strategy instead of a different approach,” read the lead sentence of Breitbart’s wrap on the speech.

And other articles seemed tuned to frustrate Trump and tweak rivals of Bannon.

One piece was headlined “His McMaster’s voice: Is Trump’s Afghanistan policy different from Obama?” It amounted to a two-fer: Ripping national security adviser H.R. McMaster — a former Bannon rival — and likening Trump’s decisions to those of Obama.

Another article drilled down on similarities between the two presidents’ approaches in Afghanistan, contending that Trump “specifically echoed his predecessor’s 2009 speech, after acknowledging that the war had gone on too long.”

Breitbart editor Joel Pollack tweeted that “Trump’s #Afghanistan speech was Obama’s speech minus the deadline & details. Like the bit about Pakistan, not convinced we can deliver India.”

Even before Trump spoke, the site seemed primed to oppose Trump’s commitment to Afghanistan, pre-skewering the commander in chief. For much of the afternoon, Breitbart’s lead story was an interview with the founder of Blackwater, headlined “Erik Prince: Trump will ‘roll over and accept’ same failed strategy on Afghanistan.”

Other articles noted that a troop increase would “increase pressure on Pakistan,” and there was a positive story about Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul’s opposition to any troop increase.

Breitbart slams Trump for his 'flip-flop' on Afghanistan just two days after ousted White House aide Steve Bannon returned to helm the alt-right news site
    • Steve Bannon's alt-right news site Breitbart accused President Donald Trump of a 'flip-flop' on his Afghanistan policy late Monday
    • Since Trump came into office, Breitbart was steadfastly in the president's corner as he pursued his nationalist and populist policies
    • But the president's decision to send more US soldiers to Afghanistan coupled with Bannon's departure has led to a change in the tenor of coverage at Breitbart
    • Unflattering coverage from Breitbart appears consistent with Bannon's reported vow to 'go to war' with aides who he believes are sabotaging Trump's agenda

Looks like the military industrial complex has forced Trump to at least come to the table to negotiate the billions in military contracts that are at stake in Afghanistan. Hopefully we get tax reform in exchange for all those bombs about to be dropped on those goat herders that pulled of 9/11. ;-)

Never should have gone into that hellhole in the first place. I got into many arguments with neocons back before any of our people set one foot into that place. It was a good wake up for me to see how totally fucked up some people think.
Afghanistan is where empires go to die and it's been that way for hundreds of years.

Leave right now or leave in 10 years the outcome will be exactly the same.

How Trump was convinced to send more troops to Afghanistan - by top general showing him picture of women in 1970s Kabul in mini-skirts
    • President Donald Trump announced his new strategy for Afghanistan Monday
    • He reached his decision after months of meetings capped by Camp David talks
    • One key moment came when security advisor H.R. McMaster weighed in
    • McMaster showed Trump a 1972 image of women in Kabul wearing mini-skirts, showing the capital's lost modernity

I'm not sure with all the other stuff going on if changing tactics with anything globally is a good thing, right at the moment

    My gut says:
Stand your ground until you know what's going on, etc, then and only then, make a move
I'd think, right now, fixing the flaws in our navy is first on the list

If we start to get troops moving all over the place, there's no telling, at least at our level, what's in place to move into our flanks, take our troops out from behind while we retreat?

Seems like a risky move to knee-jerk this one, or for that matter, knee-jerk anything right now
as I don't know much, I'm going to reserve my opinion right now and watch what happens with our other infrastructure in the near future

some of this could all be dust

Well when the Taliban took over they burned all the poppy fields as they considered it sinful to Islam. That could not stand with the CIA and others who were making millions from the opium trade. Therefore we (the ussa) had to go into A-stan and oust the Taliban and install a 'demon-a-cratic' government. Now the ussa is stuck there as long as the opium trade brings in $$.

The ussa can never win in that country, ever. We send in taxpayer $$ and get black funds in return. The minute McMaster replaced Flynn I knew where Trump would go.

If Trump was serious about MAGA he would have resigned in a huge public TV event explaining what was really going on to the American people. I for one would have respected him greatly for doing just that. Now it's just downhill for him as more and more supporters are falling by the wayside. That doesn't mean that they are going Dem, it means that those who hadn't voted in years, and who came out for Trump on a hope that he had the balls to MAGA will now retreat into the night again. He will not run for re-election*, so the Dems do have a good chance to regain the WH.

*Wife want's a divorce, but agreed to wait until the election was over, and agreed to stay on if he won. She will be moving back to NYC as soon as school starts again. Plus he is just not the person who is a deep thinker, and depends upon others to make decisions for himself.

Afghanistan is what finally broke Russias back. Obviously we learned nothing. Then again this isnt about learning its about warring as much as possible to keep the masses on edge and the MIC in big dollars.
If the Gov did its job and brought all the warriors home we could protect and defend our shores with ease.

We will be sending people, some from the south to fight over there while their communities are being attacked by Soros and the dems and neo-cons over here. You can't make this kind of stupid up.

What is going to be strange is we will be sending troops to Afghanistan to defend freedom while People trying to go to a Presidential rally today in Phoenix are going to be baraged with insults, thrown objects, pushed around and have their cars damaged but Trump will do nothing to protect their freedoms, forget about the invisible man Sessions. Chumpville.

Trumps plan with Bannon is a winner. So some more troops die than need be now that neo-cons control foreign policy no big deal it's the long term plan that Trump and Bannon are working on that matters most.

Military suicide rate 'a national shame' as 41 take own lives since start of 2016
Grieving families accuse Australian defence force and Department of Veterans’ Affairs of inadequate support

This article is 1 year old

    Australian Associated Press

Saturday 13 August 2016 17.59 EDTLast modified on Wednesday 26 October 201618.24 EDT

A special investigation has found that 41 military personnel and veterans have taken their own lives this year, the same as the number of Australians who were killed in Afghanistan during 13 years of war.

Grieving families of those lost say they might still be alive today if they had received adequate support from the Australian defence force and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, News Corps’ investigative report says.

The most moronic move Trump could have made. We should have never been there, never been there so long, and never should of tried to Nation Build a shit hole.
Every thing has failed there and we are throwing away our nation's treasure and maiming and killing our best young people for nothing.
GET OUT NOW Trump, from Syria, from Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Yemen and everywhere else.
My son was 10 when this crap started, and now he's going to be 26, a commissioned officer since 2014, now a tank company executive officer somewhere in the Mideast. Have the hundred year wars come back? Stop the madness. I don't want my grandchildren there, but I am afraid they will be.

This is why I was so outspoken about Trump when he fired Flynn and then took on McMasters. Anyone could have researched McMasters ideology and would have come to the conclusion that he was a middle east war monger, quite unlike Bannon. But Trump has a woody for anything Arab, so I can see why he choose him. Check out McMasters top aide. Her name is Dana something, and all the pieces fall in place.

The entire middle east is a shit hole. It's a millstone around America's neck. We have nothing in common with any of them and owe none of them anything. We have no business over there what-so-ever. But we've been there for years and now Trump wants more Americans to die there. Why?

    - Never ending war on terror
    - Never ending war in the middle east
    -Militarized cops
    - DHS / TSA
    - Patriot Act

Wonder where we're heading with all this?

Indiana town in mourning. 23 year old Army paratrooper killed in Afghanistan by suicide bomber. Another useless death. Very sad story. Was unable to find the video I saw on local news, but people interviewed along the route of the procession seemed pretty fucking sad.

Slain soldier's funeral planned at his Indiana high school
COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - The funeral for an Indiana soldier killed during a suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan will be at the high school from which he graduated six years ago.

Military officials say 23-year-old Army Sgt. Jonathon Michael Hunter of Columbus was one of two American soldiers killed in the Aug. 2 attack on a NATO convoy. Hunter was 32 days into his first deployment since joining the Army in 2014.

Hunter's funeral is set for 2 p.m. Aug. 26 in Columbus East High School's gymnasium. Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home says calling will be 10 a.m. until the funeral starts in the gymnasium.

Mark Hunter says his son got married last October. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Hundreds honor Indiana soldier killed in Afghanistan attack
    Associated Press , WHAS

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - Hundreds of people lined streets in the Indiana hometown of a soldier killed during a suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan as his body was taken from the city's airport to a funeral home.

Dozens of soldiers and police officers stood at attention Tuesday while the flag-draped casket of 23-year-old Army Sgt. Jonathan Michael Hunter of Columbus was transferred from a plane to a hearse. People stood silently, with many holding American flags, in a light rain watching the procession that included more than 200 motorcyclists.

Hunter and 25-year-old Spec. Christopher Harris of Jackson Springs, North Carolina, were killed during an Aug. 2 attack on a NATO convoy. Both were with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Hunter's funeral is set for Saturday at Columbus East High School.

The German Foreign Minister has said the US should coordinate its Afghan policy with the EU, to avoid a new surge of Afghan migrants into Europe. But former Congressman Ron Paul says the deeper the US gets involved in the country, the more attacks America will face on its freedom.

"The new, re-Bannoned Breitbart didn’t seem to hold back at all." Did you think he would?

Ok, one more time class, Steve Bannon was behind Trump's election platform, Bannon's strategy appealed to the .alt right. Now get lost Steve, like used TP.

Donald Trump/Hillary Clinton are two sides of the same coin. Flip it all you want, it still comes up TAILS. Get it?

    Donald is a PROMOTER. Period. Best in the world. He just premoted Colonel Sanders to World Class Promoter #2 {Sanders was THE MOST RECOGNIZED man in the world for years until the 'Trump' brand surpassed KFC this year.}

I hate spelling these things out, as we are not the great loosers we pretend to be. Maybe no on on this forum is crying? eeeee gads. We lost, get over it gang..

    {I knew a guy who knew the Colonel in KY. Said, "He always smelled like booze, bitched non-stop at the employees and cursed enough to make a sailor blush." Ouch. Truth hurts}

He opened his first KFC in a gas station in Corbin, KY. Our State Agency had Christmas Dinner every year at Claudia Sanders across the street as the original KFC was torn down years ago. Great promoter. Gotta love the Colonel.

Now would you like some dumplings with your new commander and chief???

    {The adolescent angry 'Tweety Birds at my enemies' all friggen night long should have been a clue}

His ouster brings the number of officials who have been fired or otherwise departed the Trump administration to 14:

Finally, with the ouster of Bannon, the list of high-ranking personnel fired by Trump rises to 14. They are:

    Sally Yates
    Michael Flynn
    Katie Walsh
    Preet Bharara
    James Comey
    Michael Dubke
    Walter Shaub
    Mark Corralo
    Sean Spicer
    Micheal Short
    Reince Priebus
    Anthony Scaramucci
    Steve Bannon
    Sebastian Gorka

Maybe Trump will start putting weekly firings on the White House calendar? ;-)

Trump Presidency Is Over - Bannon Is Right

Trump Presidency Is Over - Bannon Is Right

“‘The Donald’ has been White House-broken,” writes Bill Bonner in his must read daily missive on Bonner and Partners

“‘The Donald’ has been White House-broken,” was what we were trying to say, translating the phrase into something that may make sense to a French listener.

But it was too clever and complicated.

“Well, let’s just say the president has been brought into line,” we simplified.

    Social Season

This is the social season in the French countryside.

Weddings, cocktails, receptions – people use the month of August to reconnect with friends before returning to work, school, and retirement in the fall.

Yesterday, we drove about a half hour over country lanes to a gracious 18th-century farmhouse. There, about 100 people had gathered on the lawn.

“You are American?” we were asked several times. “What do you think of Trump?”

We dodged as best we could. Inevitably, we were forced to explain that, yes, he is a disgrace… but, no, we would not prefer Ms. Clinton… and, no, we do not like [French president] Mr. Macron, either:

“None of them has the strength or independence you would need to buck the trend.”

    “What trend is that…?”

    “Oh, it’s a long story… and it is such a beautiful evening…”

The guests were a wide assortment of local farmers and Paris-based hedge fund managers. The former complain about the weather. The latter complain about the markets. Both complain about the government.

But here at the Diary… we don’t complain. We just want to know when to pack an umbrella.

    Payoffs and Pimping

Yesterday, we looked at how Washington insiders have brought President Trump to heel.

He said so himself: “Decisions are much different when you sit behind the desk in the Oval Office.”

Many people believe the White House elevates its occupants so they become better people and make better decisions.

Candidate Trump may be a scoundrel or a scalawag, lusting for fame and fortune, when he announces his candidacy, they say. But when he enters the White House, the slime, incompetence, and corruption are washed down the drain. The man is born again… as POTUS.

If this were true, the Pennsylvania Avenue sewer would clog up after each election. Instead, it runs clear… because the wheeling and dealing… the payoffs and pimping… are still going on!

Alas, the White House elevator goes in both directions.

This week, President Trump hit the “down” button. Against his own “instincts”… reneging on his promises to the people who voted for him… he agreed to go along with the generals in their plan to kill more people… and spend more money… so as to make their crony friends richer and advance their own careers.

That is how things work in the “swamp.”

Today and tomorrow, we connect the dots back to the financial world.

    End of an Era

Win-win deals increase prosperity. Win-lose deals reduce it.

The swamp is where the win-lose deals breed. Since the 1970s, it has grown to cover half the U.S. economy.

There, wasteful spending, stifling regulations, phony money, misleading financial signals, zombies – corporate and individual – and all the many excesses and absurdities we watch daily here at the Diary are warping honest price signals, destroying real output, and transferring real Main Street wealth to the swamp’s insiders.

Donald J. Trump promised to pull the plug. But he couldn’t even if he wanted to. And now his decisions are Oval Office decisions… that is to say, those that suit the Deep State.

He cannot drain the swamp; he is now a part of it.

There will be no cutback in domestic spending (no genuine or important reform of O’care, for example)… and no cutback in the empire’s wars abroad.

That still leaves the possibility of tax reform. But even that is extremely unlikely. The last major tax reform program was 35 years ago. The president has neither the political skills nor the ideological commitment needed to pull off another one.

No “skinny budget”… no spending cuts… no tax reform… no relief from the swamp.

And that, friends (and we don’t have to spell it out), is why Breitbart’s Steve Bannon is right: The Trump presidency is over.

    Where to next?

    Tune in tomorrow…
