BEETHOVEN Cello Sonata no. 1, Op. 5 no. 1 | BEETHOVEN Classical Music for Relaxation and Studying
Classical Music Online - Bach, Beethoven, Mozart

    Published on Nov 20, 2017

The Cello sonata no. 1 (Op. 5/1) was written by Beethoven in 1796, while in Berlin. It was written together with the 2nd sonata. He composed the pieces for the cellist king Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia, and played them several times in court. In the early 19th century, sonatas for piano and instrument were advertised as piano sonatas with instrumental accompaniment. The cello sonata was especially so, as it grew out of sonatas for continuo; as late as the beginning of the 19th century it was still common for the cello in cello sonatas to double the left hand of the piano part. Beethoven is credited with composing the first cello sonatas with a written-out piano part.

One of the giants of the historically informed performance world needs little introduction; nor indeed his sympathy to Mozart’s oeuvre as already demonstrated in recordings of the three da Ponte operas that have met with wide acclaim and many awards for their closely observed intimacy, their sense of fun and drama and their well-chosen casts, at one with Kuijken’s vision of these jewels of human and music drama.

His recording of Mozart’s magical last opera, however, has not received wide availability until now, in its appearance as part of Brilliant Classics’s comprehensive Opera Collection. The recording was made live at the Notre-Dame Church in Beaune, in France, in 2004. The cast is highly recognisable from many other fine productions of Baroque and early music, including Suzie LeBlanc (Pamina); Cornelius Hauptmann (Tamino); Stephan Genz (Papageno) and Isolde Siebert (Queen of Night).

Of course the orchestral contribution to this recording is no less distinguished: La Petite Bande features the cream of Continental period-instrument musicians, and is led by Kuijken himself, a violinist as much at home in Mozart’s world as he is in Bach’s.

    PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY
Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48

Performed by Metamorphose String Orchestra (Minsk, Belarus)
    Conducted by Pavel Lyubomudrov
    (Live Recording)

    I. Pezzo in forma di sonatina 00:00
    II. Valse 02:20
    III. Elegia 06:06
    IV. Finale 15:13

    ABOUT THE SERENADE
Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings was composed in 1880 and given a private performance at the Moscow Conservatory on 3 December 1880. Its first public performance was in St Petersburg on 30 October 1881 under Eduard Napravnik. Tchaikovsky intended the first movement to be an imitation of Mozart's style, and it was based on the form of the classical sonatina, with a slow introduction. The stirring 36-bar Andante introduction is marked "sempre marcatissimo" and littered with double-stopping in the violins and violas, forming towering chordal structures. This introduction is re-stated at the end of the movement, and then reappears, transformed, in the coda of the fourth movement, tying the entire work together. On the second page of the score, Tchaikovsky wrote, "The larger number of players in the string orchestra, the more this shall be in accordance with the author's wishes."

    ABOUT THE ORCHESTRA
Founded in 2015 by conductor Pavel Lyubomudrov, a graduate of the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, the Metamorphose String Orchestra is a member of the prestigious Belarusian Union of Musician. Since its inception, the Orchestra has played more than 20 concerts in Minsk, all met with great critical acclaim. With its constantly-changing repertoire, the Orchestra proves true to their name – experimentation is in their DNA. Special emphasis is put on Belarusian and Russian composers. The Orchestra’s repertoire currently includes works by Prokofiev (“Romeo and Juliet”) and Tchaikovsky (“The Nutcracker”, “Suite for Strings Op. 48”), as well as pillars of the classical repertoire such as Beethoven’s “Heroic” Symphony, Grieg’s “Holberg Suite”, Bizet’s “Carmen”, Haydn’s “Seven Words of the Savior on the Cross” and Britten’s “Symple Symphony”. In 2016, the Orchestra premiered the works of A. Litvinovsky (“Le Grand Cahier”, for the stage production of the same name) and A. Pozharitsky. Throughout its life, the Orchestra has performed with prominent musicians and collaborated with important personalities of the Belarusian artistic community, such as O. Podov (Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus, Concertmaster of the State Chamber and the State Academic Symphony Orchestra) and Yulia Stefanovich (Honoured Artist of the Republic of Belarus). The Orchestra has also shared stages with flautist Maria Fedotova (Mariinsky Theater, St. Petersburg), cellist Mikael Samsonov (Belarus-Germany), oboist Juan Manuel Garcia-Cano (Spain) and pianist Stanislav Soloviev, just to mention a few. In 2016, the Orchestra recorded their first album, Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”, in the unique acoustics of the church of St. Roch. The same year, they performed at summer festival "KolerFest" (held at the Belarusian State Museum of Folk Architecture and Life), and were invited to perform at the concert of American metal band Manowar in Minsk, proving once again their versatility, creativity, and talent.

Beethoven's 29th sonata, Op. 106, a.k.a. the Große Sonate für das Hammerklavier, or more simply as Hammerklavier, is widely considered to be one of the most important works of the composer's third period and one of the great piano sonatas. It is considered Beethoven's single most difficult composition for the piano, with the possible exception of the Diabelli Variations, and it remains one of the most challenging solo works in the entire piano repertoire to this day. The sonata was written in 1817-18, towards the end of a fallow period in Beethoven's compositional career, and represents the spectacular emergence of many of the themes that were to recur in Beethoven's late period: the reinvention of traditional forms, such as sonata form; a brusque humor; and a return to pre-classical compositional traditions, including an exploration of modal harmony and reinventions of the fugue within classical forms.

Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. Bach enriched established German styles through his mastery of counterpoint, harmonic and motivic organisation, and his adaptation of rhythms, forms, and textures from abroad, particularly from Italy and France. Bach's compositions include hundreds of cantatas, both sacred and secular. He composed Latin church music, Passions, oratorios and motets. He often adopted Lutheran hymns, not only in his larger vocal works, but for instance also in his four-part chorales and his sacred songs. He wrote extensively for organ and for other keyboard instruments. He composed concertos, for instance for violin and for harpsichord, and suites, as chamber music as well as for orchestra. Many of his works employ the genres of canon and fugue.

    02. Piano Sonata No.32 In C Minor, Op.111 - 2. Arietta (Adagio Molto Semplice E Cantabile) 09:22

The Sonata no. 32, Op. 111, is the last of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Along with Beethoven's 33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli and his two collections of bagatelles, this was one of Beethoven's last compositions for piano. Written between 1821-2, it showcases fugal elements, like other late period works. In an unusual structural setting, the work has only two movements, though it is clear that the balance between them eliminates the need for a third one. Sketches for this work have been found dated as early as 1800. Chopin greatly admired this sonata, and it inspired some of his works.

    03. Piano Sonata, No.31, A flat Major, Op. 110 - III. Adagio ma non troppo. Fuga. Allegro ma non troppo 08:56

The Piano Sonata No. 31, by Ludwig van Beethoven was composed in 1821, and stands as the central piece in the group of opp. 109–111. The sonata is in three movements. In the summer of 1819 Moritz Schlesinger, from the Berlin firm of publishers, met Beethoven and asked to purchase some compositions. After some negotiation Schlesinger agreed to purchase 25 songs for 60 ducats and three piano sonatas at 90 ducats. In May 1820 Beethoven agreed, the songs (op. 108) already being available, and he undertook to deliver the sonatas within three months. These three sonatas are the ones now known as opp. 109–111. Beethoven was prevented from completing all three of the promised sonatas on schedule by factors including an attack of jaundice.

    02. Sonata No. 20 in G Major, Op. 49 No. 2 - II. Tempo di menuetto 04:46

The Piano Sonata no. 20 was probably written around the time Beethoven composed the 3rd and 4th sonatas, but because it was published in Vienna in 1805, nearly a decade after it was written, it was assigned then-current opus and sonata numbers, placing it amid works from the composer's middle period. In the case of this sonata and its immediate predecessor, it was Caspar van Beethoven, the composer's brother, who decided they were worthy of publication. Against the composer's will, he presented them to a publishing house, thus allowing posterity to hear works that might otherwise have gotten lost or destroyed. It is believed that, had Beethoven himself released this sonata for publication, he would have called it a sonatina, owing to its modest proportions.

    Composers: Johann Sebastian Bach
    Artist: Pieter-Jan Belder (harpsichord)

Bachs French Suites are the ultimate expression of the composer in this genre. This music for keyboard solo is totally autonomous and only stylistically refers to dance forms.

This is a brand new recording by harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder playing on an instrument made by Cornelis Bom after Ruckers, Schoonhoven 1999.

The French Suites are combined here with two more suites by Bach, BWV 818 and 819. Excellent performances with a fine ear for Bach’s music.

    Vivaldi: Concerti Solenni

It is remarkable that concertos by Vivaldi are still awaiting their first recordings, and this CD programmes 8 ‘solemn’ concertos. Solemn in this context usually meant a slow introduction, acting as a prelude to the following 3 movements. Vivaldi was a master at creating concertos from other works, and these were known as ‘pasticcio’ concertos. For example, sinfonias or overtures to his many operas provided a happy hunting ground for such concertos, and on this CD the concertos are a mix of Vivaldi’s pasticcios and those of the Pablo Queipo de Llano, a Vivaldi scholar and author the comprehensive CD booklet essay.

To illustrate how adept Vivaldi was at turning existing works to new uses, the finale of RV197 was originally the double fugue from the overture to the serenata La senna festeggiante RV693. This had in turn been adapted by Vivaldi from the closing section of Lotti’s Moralita d’una perla. The opening movement of RV155 was reused by Vivaldi for his Salve Regina RV618
The tradition of pasticcio concertos arranged from other composer’s works was common practice at the Dresden court, where the director was Johann Georg Pisendal, a pupil of Vivaldi. Many movements by Vivaldi were found among the manuscripts in Dresden, and form the basis for these reconstructions.

SUNDAY, Dec. 3, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Even months after recovering from the flu, older people remain at increased risk for a heart attack, stroke or disability, a doctor who specializes in infectious diseases warns.
The first brain cells that respond to sound have been identified, which could pave the way for early diagnostic tests for cognitive diseases like autism.
Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have identified a mechanism that could explain the early link between sound input and cognitive function, referred to as the Mozart Effect.
The researchers observed sound-induced nerve impulses in subplate neurons—which help guide the formation of neural circuits—in a ferret model.
“Our work is the first to suggest that very early in brain development, sound becomes an important sense,” Amal Isaiah, an assistant professor of otorhinolaryngology at UMSOM and one of the principal authors, said in a statement. “It appears that the neurons that respond to sound play a role in the early functional organization of the cortex.”
During development, subplate neurons are among the first neurons to form in the cerebral cortex--the outer part of the mammalian brain that controls perception, memory and, in humans, higher functions such as language and abstract reasoning.
The role of subplate neurons is believed to be temporary, as once the brain’s permanent neural circuits form, the majority of subplate neurons disappear. This led to the assumption that subplate neurons had no role in transmitting sensory information.
Scientists had thought that mammalian brains transmit their first sensory signals in response to sound after the thalamus, a large relay center, fully connects to the cerebral cortex.
Other studies have shown that some mammals demonstrate the connection of the thalamus and the cortex coincides with the opening of the ear canals, which allow sound to activate the inner ear.
The timing supports the traditional model of when sound processing begins in the brain.
“Previous research documented brain activity in response to sound during early developmental phases, but it was hard to determine where in the brain these signals were coming from,” Patrick Kanold, Ph.D., a professor of biology at University of Maryland College Park, said in a statement. “Our study is the first to measure these signals in an important cell type in the brain, providing important new insights into early sensory development in mammals.”
With the source of early sensory nerve signals found, the researchers believe they can find ways to diagnose autism and other cognitive deficits that emerge early in development.
The researchers now plan on studying in more detail how subplate neurons affect brain development.
