    My favorite subject matter,
Real people, real stuff, sweat equity,
Either it is....or it is not..
Either you are something, or you are not...
This stuff, these people , much like us here on GIM,
cannot be twisted by liars loans into something we want others
    to perceive us to be.
Sad to me that the days of l positive money are gone.
Im rambling from the coffee shop.

    DSC04710.jpg Hystck,
I just found this 4x5 glass plate yesterday and copied it using my digital camera last night. Interesting image. Probably late 1800's.
I think it might have been intended to be used as a student illustration depicting the Puritan ethic in the public school system, or something like that.
But, because it was a flawed development it had been discarded or boxed away and forgotten about. Cool and interesting anyway. Enjoy.

    Hello Real Jack,
Long time no talk to. :)
Thats a pretty darn cool image / glass plate negative you have there.
Did they have any more where you found that one ? Very interesting subject matter at that !
    Appreciate you posting very much.
There are some fascinating stories about people who knew of a photographers collection of negatives
and or images and the quest to find them.
I just read one not to long ago and I will try and post it sometime.
There are color images / slides I really like called " Autochromes " that you might also be on the lookout for or research a bit.

I think this particular image is technically known as a collodion "positive" glass wet plate. At least I think it's a wet plate
as opposed to a dry plate. It was never backed with balsam, varnished or cased. Honestly, I'm still trying to learn the differences in these early techniques.
A friend found it and a few other glass plate negatives at Renninger's Antique Market. I reckon you know the place.

I don't know if it's from a photographers collection or an accumulation from an old studio, or what.
If I come across any Autochromes I'll let you know.

One thing I can say with certainty about the image is that it is a one of a kind moment in time from over a hundred years ago, never duplicated and never before seen by any but a handful of people. Until now, right here on GIM2, in all its historical, anthropological and artistic compressed digital .jpg glory. Pretty cool, eh?

    Pretty cool story.
    Rennigers is a fine place.
Extravaganza is coming up in November.
We should rendezvous for coffee. ?
Better spot than say....a parking lot of a CVS. :)
I would say thats probably an Ambrotype.
There are many variants, but for sure a nice period image on glass.
    Very nice find !

P.s. The chap with the paddle, looks as if he has a close pin on his ear !?
    Yes, very interesting image RJ.

I'll be there during extravaganza for sure.
We could grab a coffee or beer at the Grub Station in the main building. It'd have to be brief
since I'll be working a booth off and on for all three days. But yeah, let's meet up.
In the mean time, it'll give me a chance to dig around and see what I can find that might interest you.

Lol...'Chap'...good word, given the time period. I have a theory about the clothes pin on his ear.
It may be a visual illustration of the old adage', "this is gonna hurt me more than it does you" often said before the paddle comes down.
The word Plymouth on the paddle may illustrate the landing of the Mayflower and the Puritans at Plymouth Rock, the bedrock of good old American Puritan ethic, which was very indicative of that time period. Notice also the magazine on the floor. Perhaps the "chap" caught the boy reading such tawdry trash, rather than doing his school work or reading the Bible as a proper boy should.
A very lively and well conceived illustrative story of the American Puritan educational ethos captured in a single wet plate image. Not too shabby an image, indeed.

For a "found photograph', I think it fits all the required criteria to qualify as an "Art" find and not merely a "hobby" find.

I will for sure check in with you at the Extravaganza.
    Looking forward to it.
This weekend I am attending the 27th Dagurreian Sociey Symposium.
Some very interesting people. A very good show at the Getty Museum,
    and some great lectures.
Membership is down...less than 600 now worldwide, down 50 % in the last 10 years.
Virtual everything takes its toll it seems as well as generational changes.

Helping my wife and her brother go through their recently departed fathers estate when we came across a Daguerreotype picture of 5th gen great grandfather. Sorry for poor pic did it iPad. Thing is like a mirror and kept reflecting while trying to photo it. My first one to see in person.

    Yo ! REO !!!
Thats over the top cool !
Shiny mirror finish, changes between a positibe and negative image a bit
while viewing at different angles s9metimes.
    A true daguerreotype.
( I have seen everything under the sun called a daguerreotype at shows but what you described is the key )
Thats so very interesting. And a family member you can identify, even better.
    So check it out,
Usually the velvet pad, when opened, is on the left. Image on the right.
Appears your image may be reversed 180 top to bottom.
Which means it has been removed from the case as originally placed and put back in upside down.
Dunno if you did that ?
However, that ALSO might mean someone else did that and there maybe be something BEHIND the image,
as in a note or something written on the case.
Could you by chance very carefully remove it and post a pic of both the back of the case ,
that which is behind the image and also the back of the image itself.
That would be interesting to see and talk about a little more.
    Awesome addition to the thread.
    Regards,

Hystck, just tried to "lift" gently the felt pad but it seem to be attached by glue. Could see a little under it and nothing. Think I best leave as is. Don't want to mess it up.

Not the felt pad....it is indeed glued
The image itself on the other side of the case.

The cases were a sideline of the daguerreotype process in that
they offered entrepreneurs a way to produce and market a product to protect ones " likeness ".
A portable hard drive of sorts with only one internal or two perhaps files.
They became standardized in size and images could be and can be swapped in and out.
Under the images, gentle removal with its glass and gold wrap attached
of course, one sometimes will find a name, a lock of hair, perhaps a personal note or even
a small calling card of the studio the image was taken.
Furthermore, the case may be stamped with the name of the manufacturing company.
" Littlefield Parsons " is one example. ( if memory is serving correct this afternoon )
There are folks who are experts and collect just case variants.
Also, the case and knowledge of the variants can assist with dating.
Nice relative image you have there.
I have lots of relatives in my humble collection.
Just from other nice folks' family trees...lol
    :)

They have a permanent area, a few pics above show that.
3 times a year, Nov, Jan and Feb they have the " Extravaganza "
The first few pics show the number of folks who bring all manner of things to market.
Wayyyy back in the back are folks with no tents at all and items strung about like a yard sale.
I heard there were 1500 or more booth spaces sold for the weekend.
Found only a few images. Slim pickings. But a couple of interesting pieces.
Highlight of the day was seeing an old friend who has a permanent booth.
Nicest lady on the planet, age 75, my wife buys hats from her.
Husband, age 81 and very ill was an airline pilot Pan Am or something years ago
And she traveled back and forth to here very often with reduced fares and with all manner of wares.
Fantastic stuff she has from England and Europe, from the 20s, 30s, and 40s and 50s
    In her small 10 x 10 booth.
    Think about going back tomorrow.
Forecast is for rain though, and " my dogs are barking "...
( thats southern Mississippian for " my feet hurt like hell "...
    Back later...Regards to all.

Yeah...I go into " sensory overload " on the secomd aisle.
    :)
Noticed a huge change in " stuff " the last 10 years.
Victorian / 19th century items are becoming increasingly rare.
All those sellers...over 1500 they said, heard near 2000 from someone also,
and saw maybe 12 daguerreotype images...
Didnt go to EVERY booth...but images of every type are certainly not seen much anymore
    at trade fairs like this.

$_3-21.jpg $_3-23.jpeg From the same guy / albeit, perhaps an operator at his studio at this time,
That photographed the Capital building in an image some pages ago.
