Exclusive: First charges filed in Mueller investigation
By Pamela Brown, Evan Perez and Shimon Prokupecz, CNN

Updated 8:57 PM ET, Fri October 27, 2017

Washington (CNN)A federal grand jury in Washington, DC, on Friday approved the first charges in the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources briefed on the matter.

The charges are still sealed under orders from a federal judge. Plans were prepared Friday for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said. It is unclear what the charges are.

A spokesman for the special counsel's office declined to comment.
Mueller was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Under the regulations governing special counsel investigations, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who has oversight over the Russia investigation, would have been made aware of any charges before they were taken before the grand jury for approval, according to people familiar with the matter.

On Friday, top lawyers who are helping to lead the Mueller probe, including veteran prosecutor Andrew Weissmann, were seen entering the court room at the DC federal court where the grand jury meets to hear testimony in the Russia investigation.

Reporters present saw a flurry of activity at the grand jury room, but officials made no announcements.

Shortly after President Donald Trump abruptly fired then-FBI Director James Comey, Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel. Mueller took the reins of a federal investigation that Comey first opened in July 2016 in the middle of the presidential campaign.

Mueller is authorized to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation," according to Rosenstein's order.

The special counsel's investigation has focused on potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as obstruction of justice by the President, who might have tried to impede the investigation. CNN reported that investigators are scrutinizing Trump and his associates' financial ties to Russia.

Mueller's team has also examined foreign lobbying conducted by former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, and others. His team has issued subpoenas for documents and testimony to a handful of figures, including some people close to Manafort, and others involved in the Trump Tower meeting between Russians and campaign officials.

Last year, the Comey-led investigation secured approval from the secret court that oversees the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to monitor the communications of Manafort, as well as former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, as part of the investigation into Russian meddling.

In addition to Mueller's probe, three committees on Capitol Hill are conducting their own investigations.

CNN's Marshall Cohen, Mary Kay Mallonee and Laura Robinson contributed to this report.

Quoted for truth from somewhere on the internet:

On Monday one of three things is going to happen, and whichever it is will set the stage for all of 2018:
    1) Mueller arrests major figures from Trump's campaign. This will confirm that Mueller is firmly in the pocket of the DNC and that they're going to go all-in trying to impeach Trump.
    2) Mueller arrests major figures from the DNC. This will confirm that Mueller has been working with Trump to go after the corrupt elements in the DNC and the Deep State.
    3) Mueller arrests a bunch of nobodies from both sides and slaps them with some minor charges. This will confirm that the entire investigation yielded nothing of consequence against either side and that Mueller is going to give a couple of low-level schmucks a slap on the wrist for some minor infractions in an effort to save face and make it look like the entire, year-long, multi-million dollar investigation wasn't a colossal waste of time, money, and manpower.

    Place your bets, gentlemen

Mueller's smartest action would have been to recuse himself from the investigation. Plan "B" would have been to resign. So now the stupid fecker has fired the first shot daring any "Trumpist" in the administration to take action against him. What a farkin ijit! Now, since he wants to play hardball, he's going to get taken down the hard way. Arkancided? He would be smart to not drive or fly anywhere any time soon.

Remember, this asshat was in charge of the FBI during the Uranium One treason. He just signed his own death warrant.

The one thing...and I know it seems very slim at this time,... but the one thing that leaves me hope is that Trey Gowdy still claims to have faith in him.

Maybe he does know more than anybody where the truth is and had decided to do the right thing and expose it all. Timing is right. Trump said there was a storm coming....Could be willing to take them all down to save himself seeing the handwriting on the wall? ....I said it was just a small hope but it is in the back of my mind.

Analysis: 5 Possible Outcomes of First Mueller Indictments

    Roll Call
    John T. Bennett

The uncharacteristically quiet day at the White House was upended Friday evening by a report that the first indictments in the Justice Department’s Russia probe are imminent.

A Washington, D.C., federal grand jury has approved a set of initial charges stemming from the Robert S. Mueller III-led investigation into Russia’s meddling into the 2016 U.S. presidential election. CNN was the first to report that the former FBI director turned special counsel could take the first individuals into custody as soon as Monday.

While all indications are that President Donald Trump has yet to be interviewed by Mueller, there’s a list of his top 2016 campaign aides, current and former White House aides and longtime confidants who could be rounded up by Mueller’s team early next week.

Here are five indictments and related outcomes that are possible then:

    Leading indicators

Paul Manafort is indicted. We know that the former Trump campaign chairman has plenty of ties to Russia and other former clients in the region, including former senior Ukrainian leaders.

Most recently, reports surfaced of alleged business dealings totaling $60 million over the past decade between Manafort and Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire with close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Manafort worked for Deripaska from 2005 to 2009, The Associated Press reported.

Mueller has reportedly warned Manafort — who is said to have supplied the Putin-connected Deripaska with briefings on the 2016 campaign — that he likely would be indicted.

Michael Flynn is indicted. The retired Army three-star general was once a well-respected military intelligence officer. He rose through the ranks to lead the Pentagon’s top espionage entity, the Defense Intelligence Agency. Then, former aides and confidants have told NPR and other outlets, something changed.

Flynn became enamored with the kind of conservative conspiracy theories that helped power Trump to the White House. The longtime soldier, who had gone into the consulting world after being fired from the DIA by President Barack Obama, became a leading national security and foreign policy adviser to candidate Trump.

But Flynn brought to the campaign a list of questionable decisions, many involving his ties to Russian officials, as a general turned consultant. Flynn served just 24 days as Trump’s first White House national security adviser before being fired for misleading Vice President Mike Pence.

House Democrats have pressed for their Republican counterparts to subpoena the White House for documents they allege will show Flynn’s “egregious conflicts of interest” due to his business dealings with foreign governments. One is Turkey. Another is Russia.

“We believe this paper trail must be pursued to answer the gravest question of all: Did Gen. Flynn seek to change the course of our country’s national security to benefit the same private interests he previously promoted, whether by advising President Trump, interacting with foreign officials, or influencing other members of the Trump administration?” House Oversight ranking member Elijah E. Cummings wrote in a recent letter to panel Chairman Trey Gowdy that featured nearly 20 other Democratic signatures.

Carter Page is indicted. The Trump-connected energy consultant came under scrutiny in 2016 for alleged questionable ties to Putin’s government while he was part of the Trump campaign.

Though Page has denied any nefarious links to Russian officials, he has informed the Senate Intelligence Committee that he plans to plead the Fifth if called to testify in that panel’s Russia probe. He is slated to appear before the House Intelligence Committee next week but has given no indication if he will be cooperative in that investigation.

    The long shots

Jared Kushner or Donald Trump Jr. is indicted. The latter is the president’s eldest son and the former is his son-in-law and a senior White House adviser. Both were present during a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer who allegedly came with dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

After nearly three hours of testimony before Senate Intelligence staffers on July 24, Kushner stood outside the White House and denied colluding with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign, saying all of his actions were both legal and proper.

Trump’s son-in-law defended himself during rare public remarks, saying: “I did not collude with Russia, nor do I know of anyone else in the campaign who did so.”

“I had no improper contacts” during the campaign and transition period, Kushner said, adding, “I have not relied on Russian funds for my business.”

He has said he left the Trump Tower meeting with the Kremlin-linked lawyer after concluding she had nothing of value for his father-in-law’s campaign.

Steven Hall, the CIA’s former chief of Russia operations, on Friday took to Twitter to summarize what might have Trump Jr. in legal hot water when it comes to that June 2016 meeting: “Don Jr took a mtg to get info Russians wanted to give.”

But an email exchange surfaced this summer with a former Russian business partner of his father that shows Trump Jr. enthusiastically accepting the man’s offer to pass the alleged Kremlin-provided dirt on Clinton to the Trump campaign.

“If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer,” Trump Jr. wrote during the email exchange with Rob Goldstone, a British-born entertainment publicist who met his father when he was trying to do business in Russia. Their email exchange began on June 3, 2016, about a month and a half before Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination.

If Mueller is targeting the commander in chief, going after his son or son-in-law this early would be a way of getting Trump's attention.

Trump fires Mueller. Remember, Trump already ousted FBI Director James B. Comey, who has said the president asked him to drop the investigation into Flynn.

“No, not at all,“ Trump told reporters during an impromptu Oct. 16 Rose Garden press conference when asked if he was considering firing Mueller from the special counsel post.

But that was before the president, who values and rewards loyalty, was facing the first wave of indictments in the Russia probe. And Trump made his disgust clear that day about the ongoing DOJ investigation.

“I’d like to see it end. Look, the whole Russian thing was an excuse (by the Democrats),” he said. “So that was just an excuse for the Democrats losing an election that, frankly, they have a big advantage in the Electoral College. ... So there has been absolutely no collusion. ... They ought to get to the end of it because I think the American public is sick of it.”

There is a modern precedent, though controversial and presidency-ending, for such a move.

The modern standard bearer is Richard Nixon, the president whom Trump’s critics often cite when pointing to his rhetoric and missteps. The so-called Saturday Night Massacre in 1973 went down after Nixon’s insistence that the special prosecutor investigating the Watergate cover-up be fired and ended with the top two Justice Department officials quitting. Nixon eventually resigned in 1974 after the House Judiciary Committee reported articles of impeachment but before the full House could vote.

(Note: White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and her top two deputies were asked to respond to the CNN report. None of the senior White House officials responded by time of publication.)

Very interesting, but I got my hopes up when HRC was being investigated for her shenanigans. Nada came from all that, even though any government employee would have been, at a bare minimum, fired.

Top Intelligence Committee Democrat Adam Schiff refuses to comment on whether Trump is under investigation by Mueller in the Russia probe
    • ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked Rep. Adam Schiff Sunday if the Democrat knew whether the special counsel was probing President Trump
    • 'I can't comment on that George, I can't answer that one way or the other,' said Schiff, who's the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee
    • Schiff's committee is probing Russian interference in the 2016 election too, though he said it wouldn't be appropriate for Mueller to give them a heads up
    • CNN reported that the first indictments are coming in the Mueller probe, with the arrests potentially coming on Monday
    • Schiff said, citing news reports, that he could see former White House aide Michael Flynn or Trump's ex campaign manager Paul Manafort being indicted
    • A Manafort indictment could answer questions about what information was exchanged between the Russians and the Trump campaign, Schiff indicated

The stupidity of this is quite apparent. PMSNBC script readers are clueless as well as their "experts. Yeah, this has gone surreal...

Mainstream media now claiming that it is 'a crime' to investigate Hillary Clinton's ties to Russia
    Tyler Durden
    Zero Hedge

Authored by Alex Thomas via SHTFplan.com,

As the public has finally began to realize the extent of the corruption surrounding Hillary Clinton, including the now infamous Russia Uranium One deal, the mainstream media has gone into hyper-drive to discredit and distract from documented facts and are now going as far as to float the idea that Trump may be committing a crime for simply investigation Clinton at all.

That's right, in the sick world of the establishment media, Trump is committing a criminal act by even considering an investigation into shady Clinton dealings with the Russians. After all, she is above the law right?

Even more disgusting, the so-called reporters spewing this nonsense are using the fact that Mueller is conducting a deep state operation (now discredited) against the president that accuses him of working with Russia to win the election when in reality it is the exact opposite. In other words, Trump is being accused of something he didn't do but because of this, he can't investigate real crimes committed by Clinton.

    Absolutely unbelievable.

During an appearance on MSNBC's "AM Joy" legal analyst Paul Butler laughably claimed that it "absolutely is" obstruction of justice for the government to investigate Hillary Clinton because... Russia. "Would these attempts to distract from the investigation, even attempting to unseal or remove the gag order from an FBI informant in order to further what is essentially a side investigation that they're pursuing, is that in itself an element of obstruction?"Host Joy Reid stunningly asked, making clear that she believes selling off 20% of the countries uranium supply to Russia is a "side issue".

"It absolutely is. The statute says if you try to impede a federal investigation, then you are guilty of a federal felony. And with Donald Trump, it's not just that he asked for a pledge of loyalty from his FBI director. It's not only that he asked the national security intelligence folks if there's any way they could thwart the investigations, not only that he reaches out to Michael Flynn after he's been fired and tell him to keep your head up. I'll see what I can do. It's this attitude that he has," Butler declared. Not only does the above exchange once again show the establishment media's ridiculous bias, it also shows that they are now running scared about the recent revelations and have since resorted to straight up nonsense as some sort of Orwellian defense.

Amazingly, criticism of even considering investigating Clinton didn't stop there, as another guest on the show accused the "autocratic" Trump administration of attempting to get Clinton locked up over nothing. Keep in mind, we have literally dozens of reports showing how guilty Clinton actually is.
"Trump's trying to feed his base. He's trying to set up prosecution and persecution of people who he dislikes,"
Fake news journalist Sarah Kendzior told Reid.

"He was not able to deliver. There's no wall. There is still Obamacare, and so he's shooting for lock [Clinton] up." In other words, Clinton has done nothing wrong at all and the only reason anyone is even talking about the failed presidential candidate is because Trump is failing in other parts of his presidency.

This is pure desperation at its finest folks. "What I worry about is that this lock her up will extend beyond Clinton to any kind of opponent. He targets private citizens. Last week, he was targeting a grieving widow. So, there's really no limits to what this administration would do. And so, I think even though it's become obvious that this propaganda blitz was in part due to draw attention away from what Mueller did, we need to watch it in the weeks to come because his is an autocratic administration and I don't think that they're going to stop with these baseless smears and persecutory attempts," Kendzior continued, adding in a mix of straight up lies and mischaracterizations while claiming with a straight face that Clinton has done nothing. It doesn't get any clearer than this. No matter what the Clinton machine is found to have done, the mainstream media, especially the puppets at MSNBC, will go to bat for her and they are now so desperate that they are willing to float the idea that even investigating queen Hillary is a crime.

He appears to be in the hottest water of any of them, but the maybe the easiest charge to throw at Manafort (at least from publicly available info) is conspiracy to violate election law by receiving a donation from a foreign power, and that makes Manafort, Kush and Junior jointly liable for each other's actions. Hard to charge only Manafort for that one.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Paul Manafort, a former campaign manager for U.S. President Donald Trump, and an associate were indicted by a federal grand jury on 12 counts including conspiracy against the United States and money laundering, the federal special counsel's office said on Monday.

The charges were the first arising from the investigation by Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed to look into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election campaign aimed at swaying the vote in favor of Trump.

Manafort and Rick Gates, a business partner who served as his deputy in the Trump campaign, were charged on Friday in the District of Columbia in an indictment unsealed Monday after the two men surrendered to the FBI, the special counsel said in a statement.

"The indictment contains 12 counts: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts," the statement said.

FARA is an acronym for Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The indictment said Manafort and Gates generated tens of millions of dollars of income from work for Ukrainian political parties and leaders and laundered money through U.S. and foreign entities to hide payments between 2006 and at least 2016.

The two concealed their work and revenue as agents of Ukrainian political parties, it said.

Manafort and Gates will be taken to the federal district courthouse, a FBI spokesman told Reuters.

Lawyers for Gates and Manafort did not immediately return calls for comment.

Manafort, 68, served the Trump campaign from June to August of 2016 before resigning amid reports that he might have received millions in illegal payments from a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine.

Investigations into Russian links with the Trump campaign, including Mueller's and probes by several congressional panels, have dogged Trump's presidency since the Republican took office in January. Trump has denied any allegations of collusion with the Russians and called the probes "a witch hunt." The Kremlin also has denied the allegations.

U.S. intelligence agencies concluded earlier this year that Moscow interfered in the campaign, including by hacking into and releasing Democratic emails in order to try to embarrass Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Among other things, Mueller has been investigating Manafort’s financial and real estate dealings and his prior work for that political group, the Party of Regions, which backed former Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovich, sources have told Reuters.

Investigators also examined potential money laundering by Manafort and other possible financial crimes, according to the sources.

Gates was a long-time business partner of Manafort and has ties to many of the same Russian and Ukrainian oligarchs.

Oh so its tax evasion. Darn, same ol, same ol.
haha they got nothing case in point....Manafort and Gates generated tens of millions of dollars of income.... And this is collusion? I guess tens of millions is a statement that Muller just don't know; could be ten dollars.

what a fiasco, and it took him a whole year.

I think it's just a BS ploy to shift attention away from the real scandals involving the fbi and democrats.
I bet these charges are dismissed as soon as the state run media stops running with it.

It's crickets because the indictment shows that most of Manafort's illegal wire transfers occurred from 2008-2013....well before Trump got involved. Is there some evidence linking Manafort to the Podesta group?

These charges having nothing to do with Trump - Russia.
If he dug something up on this cat, it should have been referred to normal Justice Department channels.
What's next? Trump Jr. jaywalking charge from 2000?

This is how real power works - the perpetrators of massive crimes against the people of the United States are in charge of prosecuting their opponents for what they themselves actually did.

Everything I am hearing = pathetic. Mueller spends 6 months and a billion dollars and lightly hooks a couple low level shits for minor BS done 100 years ago. What a sham.

God I hope the backlash from this goes on and on until all the leftists are sucking on revolvers.

Manafort should start wearing a pussy hat, claim Trump is a racist bigot, and register as a democrat. They will let him go.
