After seeing the recent sales numbers, I think it is becoming more likely that bird Johnson uncirculated emerges as the ultimate key.

I think the FS series is very unusual.

Mintage may not be the dominating factor. I believe mintage, design, and popularity play key factors in the secondary market.

For example, the poor designs of the Eisenhower and Reagan coins are killing their prices on the secondary market, even though both Unc versions of the coins have mintage under 2000. On ebay, MS70s consistently sell for under $850 for both issues.

On the other hand, the Kennedy coin continues to bring in good sales at the Mint, even though the mintage is more than triple the other coins. I found a website that ranks the popularity of the spouses:

    http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-l...n-us-history?format=GRID&action=tab&type=list

In this ranking, the first 5 spouses are:

    Kennedy
    Roosevelt
    Reagan
    Washington
    Ford

The next closest in popularity, of the ones still available, are Eisenhower, at #9, and Johnson, at #12.

When considering mintage, design, and popularity, the Roosevelt coin is head and shoulders above all the other coins, but it has already been discontinued.

Out of the ones remaining, I would say Ford is the best candidate for value, even if many other collectors also say the same.

Just made an order of the 2016 Betty Ford Unc FS coin.

Betty Ford 2016 First Spouse Series One-Half Ounce Gold Uncirculated Coin
    WEST POINT (W)
    $770.00 Qty 1 Total: $770.00

Assuming this order does not result in a return, this will be my only FS coin bought from the Mint.

Will the mint pulll all 2015 and 2016 spouse coins before launching the HR liberty gold coin in April?

    The coin has arrived!

I must say, the packaging for these coins is very impressive. Unfortunately, that says nothing about the coin itself...

Perhaps I may wait 5 years or so before deciding whether to get the coin graded.

The packaging for the UNCs, with the polished burl boxes, is even nicer than the proofs. A really nice touch, imo. Just goes to show, these were created as collector coins/series, not for investment purposes.

Congratulations on your purchase. Hope you enjoy the coin.

The mint website says, "Farewell to the First Spouse Program - Shop our collection of products."

Has anybody seen additional info on this?

I was wondering if they plan to pull the remaining products soon, or if this is just a ploy to sell them off quicker.

That been up for a little while now. I think it's a ploy to move stock. But with the Mint, one never knows. Still if there isn't much action in the gold aisle, why take your items off the shelf?

I wonder if the mint will need to get a license from George Lucas to mint the Wookie coin?

Mint states they will pull the remaining spouses by year end. Miserable end to a reviled series. We will have some low, low pop coins in the books in a few months. Wonder where this will go down the line?

Bombshell of a series but I see the premiums rising on these, particularly the low low mintage uglys graded 70.

So the question is......which spouse will be the "key" to a series that almost no one collects? Kinda defeats the purpose, but someone will be it.

Sales numbers for the last two weeks...
My fingers are crossed for the Ford Unc, my lone FS coin, to become the key.

I gotta believe Betty will take the crown. She has been slowly pulling away for some time now.

All the mintages are incredibly low.

Quite possibly. But you can't discount the sudden rush of buyers at the last minute that turn a key in to a ho-hum. Guess we'll find out soon if that happens here.

At last. At long, long last. I've been following this series since 2008 when Louisa Adams established the low mintage trend. To all who've lost hope remember this series was once quite hot in the market, it's all documented. It could happen again.

That is the first thought I have either read or considered in a long, long time that is even remotely optimistic regarding the future of this series. Thanks for that.

Anyone speculating on remaining spouses should remember that the "FINAL KEY" mintage wise is still unknown and will be for some time. The last coins in the series to have their mintages audited were the 2011's! There will end up being several coins close to each other at mintage lows but I have to think from a practical standpoint, five years plus down the road, these 'keys' will all be equally scarce in the marketplace at any given time

At the current rate of sales, and assuming the rate stays constant (haha) FORD would overtake NIXON in 10 weeks. But we don't have 10 weeks and nothing is constant.

According to this website, Eleanor Roosevelt UNC is the current 3rd lowest mintage at 1886 (unaudited).

    http://firstspousegoldcoin.com/first-spouse-gold-coin-mintages/

It would be quite funny if Ford & Nixon sold heavily in the next few weeks and someone else who was already sold out took the 'ultimate key' position.

edit: 11/29/17 Let's go to the video tape....

On November 14, the spread between Ford (1679) & Nixon (1698) was +19 coins for Nixon
On November 29, the spread between Ford (1691) & Nixon (1703) was +12 coins for Nixon

It's going to be a photo finish...

Remember if you buy spouse gold coins a few days before 12/31, you can return your order after the final week sales number become available. Free bet?

As of 12/24, the Unc numbers:

    Truman: 1931
    Johnson: 1895
    Nixon: 1975
    Ford: 1975
    Reagan: 1998

What happens when your girlfriend gives you a key to her apartment and you lose it?

    No new key

Remember this post from Nov. 15th. ?

Wonder how many are going to be sent back now.

    edit:
It is most interesting to note that each coin sold exactly 237 more than the previous week. What's the chances in that? In one week 237 x 2 = 474 x $800ea = about $380k. Some serious money.
