    OK, story time.
Dad had a Cessna 182 & our neighbor had a 170. This particular trip we took the 170 & had a magneto failure about at 8,000 ft., about 100 miles from our destination, Loreto, Baja Calif., Mexico.
We lost 200 RPM, but managed to limp into Loreto. We are all shade tree mechanics, so we took the failed magneto apart & found a cracked cap. We had a friend along that was in full panic & refused to get in the Cessna again. He wanted to take the bus home, but we got him to go on Aeronaves de Mexico DC 3 to San Diego. We asked him to get a magneto & send it UPS to us.
Mean while, we ran across 3 dentists on a missionary type visit, to repair the towns peoples teeth. We told them what happened to us & they said to use some of their dental filler material, as it was a dielectric & could be used to repair the cap. I was/am a model airplane builder, so I was appointed to scrape a cavity in the crack of the cap & fill it with the dental material. We put it all back together & had to time the magneto by the "shock method". If you have never done that, it's a thrill you don't want to experience. I don't remember why, but we moved the Cessna in between the 2 B-25's.
So, now we are all back together & it's time to try the engine. Damn, it started right up & switching between magnetos, we maintained the same RPM.
Let's go flying, it was a complete success.
Meanwhile, back in San Diego, dad's friend could not get a mag. for 2 weeks. The shop told him that we were not certified A&E mechanics & we would never get the plane flying. He went into full panic mode hahahahahah.
Long story short we flew home without incident & he was amazed to hear from us.
Almost a Baja chewing gum/bailing wire story !!!

Another story. This time in the 182,
We were on our way to Idaho City, Idaho & stopped off at Eli, Nevada, for the night, due to a storm coming thru.
The next morning it was a go. We took off & got to altitude, 9,000 ft., when we hit an up draft, it took us to 11,ooo quickly, dad put the nose down at about 20 degrees. Our airspeed climbed to 190 mph, way too fast, & we were climbing at 1,500 ft./min. By the time he got things under control, we were at 13,000 ft. Luckily we had a small bottle of oxygen. With that & dropping in increments we were OK to get back to 9,000 ft.
Life is a great adventure !!

THE PENTAGON’S MOST EXPENSIVE AIRCRAFT JUST GOT EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE || WARTHOG 2017
    Warthog Defense

    Published on May 18, 2017
When the Department of Defense approved Lockheed Martin’s CH-53K King Stallion for Marine Corps use, a leaked decision memo revealed the brand-new heavy-lift helicopters would cost $138.5 million apiece — which, at millions more than the infamously pricey F-35A Lighting II joint strike fighter, makes the King Stallion the most expensive aircraft in the Pentagon’s arsenal.

Now, the helicopter is looking even more costly. On May 9, Bloomberg reported that new King Stallion will cost closer to $144 million apiece, 4% more than the “program acquisition unit cost” projected by the DoD last month, according to Pentagon’s Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation.

Aerial Bombs: Method of Loading Bombs 1941 US Army Air Corps Training Film
    Jeff Quitney

    Published on Jun 2, 2017
    USAF Training Film playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...

How to load bombs aboard bombers. Bomb loaders are shown inserting fuses into general purpose bombs and loading them aboard B-17 and B-18 bomber aircraft.

US Army Air Corps Training Film TF1-256, produced by the Signal Corps.

Originally a public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

    Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b...

An aerial bomb is a type of explosive weapon intended to travel through the air with predictable trajectories, usually designed to be dropped from an aircraft. Aerial bombs include a vast range and complexity of designs, from unguided gravity bombs to guided bombs, hand tossed from a vehicle, to needing a large specially built delivery vehicle; or perhaps be the vehicle itself such as a glide bomb, instant detonation or delay-action bomb. The act is termed aerial bombing. As with other types of explosive weapons, aerial bombs are designed to kill and injure people and destroy materiel through the projection of blast and fragmentation outwards from the point of detonation...

    Early bombs

The first bombs delivered to their targets by air were launched on unmanned balloons, carrying a single bomb, by the Austrians against Venice in 1849.

The first bombs dropped from a heavier-than-air aircraft were grenades or grenade-like devices. Historically, the first use was by Giulio Gavotti on 1 November 1911, during the Italo-Turkish War.

In 1912, during the First Balkan War, Bulgarian Air Force pilot Christo Toprakchiev suggested the use of aircraft to drop "bombs" (called grenades in the Bulgarian army at this time) on Turkish positions. Captain Simeon Petrov developed the idea and created several prototypes by adapting different types of grenades and increasing their payload.

On 16 October 1912, observer Prodan Tarakchiev dropped two of those bombs on the Turkish railway station of Karağaç (near the besieged Edirne) from an Albatros F.2 aircraft piloted by Radul Milkov, for the first time in this campaign.

After a number of tests, Petrov created the final design, with improved aerodynamics, an X-shaped tail, and an impact detonator. This version was widely used by the Bulgarian Air Force during the siege of Edirne. A copy of the plans was later sold to Germany and the bomb, codenamed "Chataldzha" ("Чаталджа"), remained in mass production until the end of World War I. The weight of one of these bombs was 6 kilograms. On impact it created a crater 4-5 meters wide and about 1 meter deep...
