    Ingredients

    Apple Cider Vinegar
    Cream of Tartar
    Pink Sea Salt
    Lime Juice
    Monk Fruit (optional)

    Apple Cider Vinegar Drink for Fasting: Full Recipe with Thomas DeLauer

    Acetic Acid

    Apple Cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which is a synthetic carboxylic acid with antibacterial and antifungal properties.

    Acetic acid can increase your body’s absorption of important minerals from the foods you eat
    This allows you to maintain mineral balance during your fasting period and absorb the proper minerals from meals prior.

    Reduces glycemic and insulin responses to foods such as a starchy meal by delaying gastric emptying

    Because it helps to control blood glucose levels (and in turn works to improve insulin sensitivity), it can also curb sugar cravings.

    With a balanced blood sugar level, you're much less likely to experience intense, hard-to-resist sugar cravings throughout the day (1)

    Polyphenols

    Apple cider Vinegar also contains polyphenols – Polyphenols act as a prebiotic-type substance, meaning that they increase the amount of healthy bacteria in the gut, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria strains.

    They also inhibit growth of potentially pathogenic bacteria. Catechin – a polyphenol – inhibits the proliferation of Clostridium histolyticum, a pathogenic bacteria (2)

    Cream of Tartar

    Cream of tartar, also called potassium hydrogen tartrate, is an acidic natural byproduct of winemaking

    Fasting can result in the loss of minerals, specifically potassium – low levels of potassium can result in high blood pressure problems

    One teaspoon of cream of tartar = 495 mg of potassium

    Potassium tends to decrease during longer period of fasting the fastest, especially if you’re working out. Cream of tartar provides a fairly bioavailable form of potassium rather than taking a potassium supplement.

    Hypokalemia - low potassium

    Muscle weakness, fatigue and cramping are all associated with decreases in potassium, so essentially, by adding some potassium in to the mix, you can make your fast easier. (3)

    Pink Himayalan Salt

    Consuming sea salt ensures that you maintain sufficient sodium levels, and this helps balance your sodium-potassium ratios.

    Sodium and potassium are two electrolytes that work together to ensure that there is proper fluid balance in your body’s cells as well as your blood plasma and extracellular fluid.

    They work together to make sure that the cell gets the water that it needs to continue the process of ion exchange between sodium and potassium in the cell utilizing Na/K ATPase to create energy. This will help maintain energy during your fast.

    Lime Juice

    Limes contain flavonoid antioxidants known as flavonol glycosides. These antioxidants have been found to help protect against deadly bacteria such as cholera.

    Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry saw that Liminoids, one of the components of limes induced levels of glutathione s - transferase which is what essentially helps bind to free radicals, aiding in the detoxification process. (4)

    Monk Fruit

    The compounds that give it a sweet flavor (called mogrosides) are actually antioxidants

    Mogrosides are be able to protect tissues in the body from the damage of free radicals

    Monk fruit compounds actually exhibit beneficial anti-microbial properties that may help maintain proper bacterial balance

    Extracts from the fruit and leaves have been shown to inhibit candida, streptococcus, and bacteria responsible for gum disease in the mouth

    Beets

    Beets contain betanin and vulgaxanthin, two phytonutrients that reduce inflammation by inhibiting COX enzymes that are known to trigger inflammation. If you’ve ever taken aspirin, aspirin is an anti-inflammatory because it inhibits this same COX enzyme.

    Beets are also a fairly unique source of a nutrient called betaine, which helps to protect the cells from environmental stress and is known to have significant anti-inflammatory effects.

    According to researchers, betaine consumption is linked to reduced inflammation and protection against other diseases.

    In general, beets fight to repair the cell damage caused by inflammation and contain high-levels of magnesium, and a magnesium deficiency is strongly linked with inflammatory conditions.

    Pineapple

    Pineapples are loaded with nutrients that offer a wide range of health benefits, but they also contain an enzyme known as bromelain.

    Bromelain has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect on the body and is the reason why pineapple has been touted as one of the best natural anti-inflammatory foods out there.

    Research has found that due to bromelain’s anti-inflammatory nature, it is effective in treating conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and joint pain. It is also able to break down fibrin, a protein that causes blood clots.

    - Garlic

    As mentioned previously, cytokine production promotes inflammation and garlic, favorably, contains four sulfuric compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory action.

    A 2012 study found that these four compounds are able to inhibit the production of prostaglandins, cytokines and interleukin – all of which promote inflammation.

    Garlic also possesses amazing antioxidant properties in the form of allyl cysteine and allyldisulphide.

    These antioxidants inhibit lipid peroxidation (the oxidation or “turning bad” of fats) and free radicals, which prevents oxidative damage caused by free radicals in joints (7)

    Ginger

    Ginger contains a particularly potent anti-inflammatory compound called gingerols.

    Gingerols are the reason why so many sufferers of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reduced pain levels when they consume ginger regularly.

    One compared the effects of ginger extract to a placebo in 247 patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee.

    The ginger reduced pain and stiffness in knee joints by 40 percent over the placebo!

    Ginger also contains a compound, known as 6-Shogaol, that inhibits the release of swelling-causing chemicals known to cause damage to neurons. (8,9,10)

    Turmeric

    Traditionally used in Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to treat arthritis turmeric/curcumin blocks inflammatory cytokines and enzymes, including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which reduces inflammation.

    A 2010 clinical trial found that a turmeric supplement with 75 percent curcumin provided long-term improvement in pain and function in 100 patients with knee Osteoarthritis!

    In a small 2012 pilot study, curcumin was shown to reduce joint pain and swelling in patients with active Rheumatoid Arthritis better than diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

    Coconut Oil

    The dominant fatty acid in coconut oil, on the other hand, is lauric acid, which comprises about 50% of the total fat content – when lauric acid is digested it converts to monolaurin
