Welcome to GIM! You are heading in the right direction just by posting here. You will get more responses if you expand your questions a little, so others like myself can better understand what you are asking. Post a link to a product or eBay sale if you want comments about it, and ask questions that interest you.

I prefer staying away from ebay. Too many fl-by-nights

    Try APMEX

    or JMBullion

and welcome to the board! There's plenty of info of the kind you seek right here.
You merely need to start looking around in the forms.

Some of their products look a little iffy. Never heard of them before.

I would try to stick with more popular items, like sovereign gold (eagles, maple leaves, European gold). British sovereigns, Swiss and French francs, Mexican pesos are some of the best ways to buy fractional gold. If you have to buy smaller gram bars, make sure they are assayed from the major mints like the Australian mint, PAMP suiesse, credit suiesse, perth mint, etc....

If you can't afford that, buy silver from the same sources. I also think that 90% silver (pre 1964 US silver coins) is a great thing to pick up if you don't have a ton of money to spend.

    Welcome.

Why would anybody buy 1 grain of gold? At $8/grain it would cost over $3800 for an oz.

I think we all probably made bad investment decisions when we started down the PM road. The OP is here to learn, let's teach.

OP, it's a good idea to calculate out how much premium you are paying over spot per oz. if you do that you will see that your grain was very expensive. But lucky for you it was a small purchase.

To make that commitment to yourself about actually buying PMs. Everyone starts someplace.

My advice is to listen and learn here. Unfortunately you're jumping in at a very volatile time which means you'll be learning under fire

Good luck on your fine decision!

Looking around ebay (the good and the bad) and the above listed links, 1/2 and 1 gram seems to be the lowest they sell bars at. I wanted to start with that as i learn, and go from there. Also tried my hand with 1 of silver too. shiny.

That and i think there's a metal shop in my town i may look around tomorrow, and look around next time i go up to NYC (i live in jersey).

    Welcome !!!
    Thanks for coming aboard.
    Good advice up above.
Yes, check out the per ounce price etc.
    There are various fractional offerings,
Figure out what you can buy periodically and just hang in there doing it.
Dont be a stranger will ya ?

Maybe because buyers cannot determine if a few grains is real gold, or possibly something else that may (or may not) be plated with gold. That difficulty in verifying quality makes grams easy to resell to the few buyers who will just believe what they are told.

My advice is to not pay the high premiums to buy any fractional gold. One ounce (or larger) silver has a much lower premium, and it is relatively easy to verify the quality by measuring weight, diameter, and thickness. If smaller sizes are needed, silver can be purchased in units as small a a dime, quarter, or half (1964 or earlier). The bonus in that approach is that silver will increase in price more than gold, once the banksters stop stepping on silver and allow it to reach its true market value.

Grams is the lowest most the places sell, so dont start at gram for bars?

I strongly recommend that you stop thinking about precious metal purchases sized in grains or grams or any other fractional sizes. Stick with the standard of troy ounces, at least until you have learned much more about the markets. If your budget is limited to purchases of less than $100. JM Bullion is likely to be the best place for you to shop because they offer quality products with free shipping. As your budget and knowledge levels increase, then other purchasing opportunities will become available for you to consider. Note the emphasis on troy ounces. If you are not very familiar with that standard, ramp up your level of experience with a web search for troy ounces. The link below is one I found and it is a good place to begin your journey.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troy_ounce

Sellers who offer different units of measurement (like grains, grams, pounds, etc) may be OK, but there are also many con men who use unit confusion as a way to get more money from buyers who do not fully understand what they are buying. Stick with multiples of troy ounces, at least until you are sure about exactly what you are buying. Hope this helps.

One ounce silver coins such as American Silver Eagles, or Canadian (Silver) Maple Leafs are affordable enough for anyone.
You can buy from places like Apmex or providentmetals.com
