    500 S&W Bullets from a SHOTGUN Experiment
    TAOFLEDERMAUS

    Published on Jan 8, 2018
Tim Hamilton sent us some bullets for us to load up to see how they perform out of a rifled shotgun. These bullets were never designed for a 12ga shotgun and there is NO load-data available. It takes a LOT of experimentation to get the powder loads ideal for something like this. This proof-of-concept was successful enough to show these WILL work. (yes it is 500 S&W not .50 S&W)

    XM42-M Flamethrower Range Review
    Jeremy S.

    Published on Jan 14, 2018
Chris and I hit the range with the gen2 XM42-M Modular flamethrower from The Ion Productions Team. And why not?!?! A portable, battery-powered flame thrower that sends a stream of gasoline from its on-gun tank 30+ feet? Sign me up! They even offer a backpack tank for 3.5 minutes of constant fire. Crazy stuff.

Best 9mm Ammo? Federal 9mm +P 124gr HST Gel Test
    TFB TV

We have tested several 9mm defense loads from a 3.1" S&W Shield and none of them have done very well. Even the Federal 9mm 150gr HST that is specifically marketed for short barrel pistols had less than ideal performance. It's a difficult trick to design a bullet that can expand well and penetrate adequately while still being able to expand when fired through heavy clothing, and do all of that at the relatively low velocities produced by short barrel 9mm pistols. If you reduce weight, you can get higher velocity, which can improve expansion, but that reduced weight can result in shallower penetration too.

So when we tested Federal 9mm +P 124gr HST, I was unsure of what to expect. To say that it's a well respected load in service pistol length barrels is a bit of an understatement. It is quite probably the best possible load and it's been very well documented. But given the track record of other 9mm in the short barrel, I was prepared for less than perfect results and I was pleasantly surprised.

Recoil is, of course, a bit snappier than standard pressure 124gr 9mm, but it's by no means obnoxious. Velocity was decent for a 3.1" barrel.

    Velocities (fps):
    1,136
    1,127
    1,129
    1,145
    1,101
    Average: 1,127.60
    StdDev: 16.46
    Min: 1,101
    Max: 1,145
    Spread: 44

In bare gel, the figures and appearance of the bullet and the wound track are all textbook. Everything is as near perfect as can be.

    Bare gel
    Penetration: 14.9", 16.0"
    Retained weight: 122.9gr, 123.9gr
    Max expansion: 0.638", 0.663"
    Min expansion: 0.414", 0.405"

But that is the easy part. Many bullets can produce decent results in bare gel, even at short barrel velocities. The hard part is being able to do that in heavy clothing as well. In this case, the results were not quite perfect. But they were nevertheless very good. Penetration was a little deep and expansion was somewhat more moderate. But expansion did occur and it was both reliable and uniform. Bear in mind that this is also the IWBA four layers of denim standard, not the FBI heavy clothing. The latter is a bit easier to pass.

    Heavy clothing
    Penetration: 19.1", 19.4"
    Retained weight:123.8gr, 123.5gr
    Max expansion: 0.635", 0.675"
    Min expansion: 0.393", 0.386"

I may sound as if I'm gushing a bit, but this is really the best set of results seen so far from a short barrel pistol. We won't be giving up by any means, but I did switch from Speer's short barrel 124gr Gold Dot to 124gr HST in my own Shield. It could be that +P 124gr Gold Dot does as well, but this +P 124gr HST definitely outperformed both the HST and Gold Dot short barrel loads.

Double Mega Ball Round - Too powerful to be Legal?
    TAOFLEDERMAUS

    Published on Jan 16, 2018
We test out the Double Mega Ball rounds in this video. Imagine the recoil of 2.25oz. of lead! Will the balls behave like a Newton's cradle where one ball travels faster than the other? Will the spread be too wide and miss everything? What would the velocity be? Let's find out.

We test out the Russian-imported Techcrim ECO zinc slugs. We have tested more Russian slugs than anyone in the U.S. and finally they have started importing them so others can try them out. Now we just need to get these available at U.S. retailers. How cool would it be to have real Russian ammo?

    Video notes

    Buying an AR

First thing to consider: what is this for?
-mostly because there are WAY too many options available

    -Home defense
    -Job training
    -target shooting/ distance work

    Barrel coatings
Chrome lining- standard (blamed for inconsistency)
Melonite- aftermarket (consistent and more accurate)
Nitride- aftermarket (even more consistent, harder, and more accurate)
Without clouded marketing, the fact remains that all of these perform about the same.

    Barrel construction
    4140
4150- Military spec, but not all are equal. Actual mil spec requires additional carbon or vanadium within the steel forging process. This lends itself to better wear characteristics and a longer barrel life.
What does this mean? 4140= .40 carbon 4150= .50 carbon (generally speaking) A barrel with 4150 steel tends to have better wear characteristics then 4140.

CHF- barrels tend to last longer
Button Rifling- tend to be a touch more accurate, but will not last quite as long

    Stainless Steel-
The advantage- you tend to get a greater accuracy yield from stainless
The disadvantage- Generally, you have around half the barrel life of a CHF barrel

You generally hear of three different types of stainless material.
410- The most durable as far as hardness and barrel life (My personal favorite)
    416-
416R- The greatest accuracy yield, but the shortest barrel life 2.5k accuracy reduction made worse after 5k (worse meaning worse than a quality CHF barrel), and keyholing by 10k ish

Two big things that determine the quality of barrel (Wear characteristics)
-Temperature used to form the steel
-The addition of Moly Bendium into the steel process
These effects how the steel performs as far ad durability and barrel life.

    Gas systems:
Carbine- More reliable in the moment, but harsh on components over time
Mid- Length- Reserves the ability to keep a 14.5 less harsh on components/ smoother impulse
Rifle length- The least harsh on components/ The smoothest impulse

    Piston driven rifles

    Twist rate:
1/7- the most standard, Supports most grains just fine and supports heavier bullets better
1/9- Supports up to 62/69 well
⅛ Supports both very well especially in wylde. (found in many stainless/ target barrels)

(Go to video for in depth)

    Ammunition Type:
    Practice/ training ammo
Wolf (Go to video for in depth dispelling myths)
    Xm193
    Wolf gold (basically xm193)
    M855 (terrible)
    PMC
    American Eagle

    Target ammunition/ precision ammunition:
    MK 262 77g
Black hills (Makes a great MK 262)

    Building an AR
So long as you don’t run into issues with mag inserts, and as long as things are tightened down properly, a lower is a lower is a lower.
Military triggers run just fine just use a military hammer to prevent any issues with all systems
Polymer/ Carbon fiber receivers are terrible

Good aftermarket triggers I’ve personally used:
    Geissele
    ALG
    Timney (match)

    Buffers:
Carbine – 3 oz. (not a personal favorite)
    Heavy (H) – 3.8oz.
    H2 – 4.7oz.
    H3 – 5.0oz – 3 tungsten weights inside buffer.
    HSS - 6.5oz.
    XH - 8.5oz.
    Rifle Length – 5.0oz.

    Buffer springs:
    Carbine
    Rifle
These should be used according to stock and tube used.

    Good options:
    Standard mil
    JP enterprises chrome silicon spring

A good buffer and spring combo
JP enterprises Silent Captured Spring buffer system (Gen2)

    Upper components:
This is simple, piece together components from the manufacturers listed above. When it comes to the complete upper or components DON’T SKIMP

The slug that defies physics - Dumbbell Steel Slug
    TAOFLEDERMAUS

Help us continue to create videos with Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/taofledermaus It's easy to use, using Paypal and even $1 a month is a big deal. $1 replaces around 5000 view's worth of ad-revenue that we have lost.
We have not been charging ammo manufacturers any money to test their products. It's doubtful we'd get very many things to test if we did that.
We test out Tim's odd-ball dumbbell slugs which are anything but dumb. The design seems to defy most peoples' idea of what a stable design would look like. This wacky design somehow flies straight as an arrow without spin, fins, or being nose or tail-heavy.
It's also one of the most-powerful slugs we've ever tested.

HOW far will a 12 ga. Foster Slug Go? (spoiler: less than you think)
    TAOFLEDERMAUS

    Published on Feb 17, 2018
People often chide us for not having a backstop, or they see cars off in the distance and think we are being reckless. Maybe they just can't judge distances through the lens of a camera, they don't understand physics, or assume shotguns can shoot further than a .50 bmg sniper rifle. I don't know. But people have asked me how far a shotgun slug can travel and when I tell them, they are often surprised and don't believe me. In this video you can see with your own lying eyes how far they will travel.

STILL, always know what is beyond your target, shoot safely, but don't use Hollywood or video game physics to learn your gun safely from.

.50 BMG Shotgun Round - How bad can it be?
    TAOFLEDERMAUS

    Published on Feb 16, 2018
We loaded up some .50 bmg that we recovered from the video showing what .50 bmg rounds so outside the chamber... I used 30 grains of Longshot, and .50 cal RSS sabots. We shot these through Danny's fully rifled shotgun. Will they work or will it be a colossal failure? This idea has been suggested more times than I can count by our viewers.
