Urban Myths Busted About Growing Your Own Food! | Joel Salatin
    Reluctant Preppers

    Published on Jun 7, 2017
Want to achieve food independence, but wary of pests, toxic chemicals, and smelly manure? If you’ve grown up in modern society, you’ve almost certainly been impacted by concerns and misgivings about farming, and there are abundant examples of mismanaged operations that give farming a black eye! But is it possible to raise livestock and large gardens without putting off your family or neighbors?

Joel Salatin, co-founder of Polyface Farms, widely-sought lecturer, activist, and author of numerous books on homesteading, permaculture and food emancipation from government over-regulation, returns to Reluctant Preppers to elevate our awareness of the amazing options to make food production neighbor-friendly and odor-free!

===== Urban Myths Busted in this Interview: =======

    “Farms Stink”?
    ——————————
    * Deep carbon-based bedding for quiet & odorless chicken & rabbit farming.

    “Farms Hurt the Ecology”?
    ———————————
    * Good farming should build the soil & help the ecology: the farmer stimulates biomass accumulation through “ecological exercise.”
    * Fully contained slatted-floor moveable rabbit shelter for self-limited grazing of pasture.

“Farm Land Doesn’t Make Economic Sense”?
    ———————————————————
    * Well done farming can generate $5/sq ft/yr
    * Plants & animals don’t require expensive governance (no negative costs to the community if done well)
    * “Chickens next to chickens” Integrated approach: reduced trash hauling, landfills, trucking traffic to bring in eggs.
    * Accountability

    “Farming Requires Large Acreages”?

ITS Tactical / Imminent Threat Solutions

    Published on Jun 8, 2017
Today on Gear Tasting, Bryan goes over the "pocket tool" market and what's available by breaking down the different features, functionality and form factors. You'll also hear why we ultimately settled on the TPT as the best choice to offer in the ITS Store.

In addition on a Question Over Coffee, Bryan offers his thoughts on using GORUCK Ruck Plates in a plate carrier vs. a training vest to build cardio.

Cooking Off-Grid: Are You Prepared? | J. Wayne Fears
    Reluctant Preppers

    Published on Jun 11, 2017
How will you prepare food when an emergency disrupts normal services, or you are forced to eat on the move and off the grid?

Legendary outdoorsman, scout, army specialist, search & rescue trainer, and prolific author J Wayne Fears lays out field-proven practical tips on how you can cook off grid, for you and your family's survival and well-being any emergency situation!

    IN THIS INTERVIEW
    ==============

Short-term vs. Long-term Short-term – A few days using patio grill, camp stove, etc. Cooking thawed food, emergency freeze dried food, boiling water to drink Long-term – Months - back to the 1700’s. Fireplace/hearth cooking skills. Wood burning stove, open fire outside, stick stoves, etc.

Know how to build a fire under all circumstances – many don’t
    - Rainy, windy, cold, wet
    - Book: Art of Building a Fire (J Wayne Fears)
    - Take a basic survival course from local land grant university

Wood sources – wood lot, parks, forests. Wood can disappear quickly in a long term disaster

Fire starters – wooden strike anywhere kitchen matches (stored to keep dry: vacuum packer is ideal), magnesium fire starters (larger: 1/2” diameter, good quality, made in USA), flint & steel (harder to use)

Fire ring in yard – cooking set-up: grill, rack & hooks, tools, pots and skillets for open fire cooking
    * need to outfit with: racks, implements, tool hangers, lid lifters

Dutch oven cooking - Single best way to go for long-term survival: used by US colonists, Western wagon trains, versatile & proven.

Reflector oven - Popular in outfitter camps & cowboy camps, concentrates the heat and enables baking.

Bean hole baker - Brick-lined hold in the ground, build fire to heat hole to 400F hot coals, dutch overs, cover with sheet metal and cover with mineral earth, leave for the day: slow cooking ready and hot when you return.

Food supply may determine cooking types - Long term situation: If you have 5 yrs of freeze dried foods: boil water is main fare. If Other fresh meats, wild game, foraging for wild plants: baking/frying/boiling, pots & pans, more tools to keep fire going.

Practice, practice, practice - Skill building: take a course in hearth cooking (museum, log cabin history centers, you can pick up a dozen skills, hands-on is essential, good instructors can show you the subtle tricks..) Mastery comes through practicing. Make it a fun part of your family’s activities now!

ITS Tactical / Imminent Threat Solutions

    Published on Jun 13, 2017
There are many things to consider when looking into camouflage and today on Gear Tasting Radio, Bryan and Rob discuss the main factors involved in effective camo. While camouflage selection is regionally dependent, other factors determine whether you’ll blend in or stick out like a sore thumb.

In addition, we also answer a Question Over Coffee, dealing with the best fabrics to wear in a humid environment that sees a lot of rain.

The Peter Rassenti Druid Custom Knife: The Full Nick Shabazz Review
    Nick Shabazz

    Published on Jun 12, 2017
The Peter Rassenti Druid is a very nice, very integral, and very expensive custom knife. Although it's a silly choice if you just need a knife to cut things, it's art, through and through, and it's also reasonably practical for everyday carry.

So, if you want a custom integral knife, which isn't completely out of place in your pocket, this is a pretty great choice!
