Hi there, this is my first ever reception of the Voice of Korea on the 19 metre broadcast band! Can't quite believe it myself really. Here is a single video constructed from two - the first is the English Service closing down, followed by music from the French Service opening. Recorded in Oxford UK on 05/05/17 at 17:30 hrs UTC using a 30 metre longwire. Thanks for watching

South Korean intel (NIS) clandestine station aimed at North Korea. The noise is the North's response to the broadcast (signal jammer). The station was also heard on 4560khz. These propaganda stations introduce themselves as voices of North Korean defectors and escapees.

Echo of Hope VOH (South Korean clandestine station, 6.25mhz, 3/9/17)
    Jonny

    Published on May 13, 2017
One of South Korea's psyop station aimed at North Korea heard somewhere on 6.25-6.40mhz. According to http://short-wave.info it is broadcasting on 6250khz apparently blocking the North Korean, Echo of Unification station also on the same frequency. VOH claims it is being run by a group called the 'General Union of Overseas Compatriots' or North Koreans who escaped the DPRK but this may be false and entirely fabricated by the South Korean Intelligence Service.

Hi there, very good copy of the signal from Addis Ababa on both receivers. The Sangean should benefit from stronger audio fidelity with the larger speaker and wider filter, but once again it's very close and I'm not sure I have a favourite here.

BC 375 world war II transmitter used in B17 flying fortresses
    LifeIsTooShortForQRP

    Published on May 14, 2017
This is the well known BC-375 WWII transmitter. This transmitter was used during WWII in the B17 flying fortresses. The design stems from the early 1930s, according to the "KISS" concept; keep it simple then there is less that can go wrong. Collins tried to replace it with the much more complicated ART-13 transmitter, but the BC-375 remained in use during WWII despite their obsolescence already then. The reason is because their phenomenal reliability; had I been a soldier flying in the B17, I would have wanted the BC-375 as my main line back to base, not the ART-13 with all its moving parts that can go wrong. In fact, this BC-375 transmitter was used all the way into the late sixties by many armies around the world. The transmitter was designed for amplitude modulation as well as CW. It gives off about 70 to 80 watt carrier (about 250 watts PEP when fully modulated). The transmiter is of the "MOPA" design, main oscillator (using a 211 tube) followed by a single PA stage (also a 211 tube). The PA is then amplitude (plate) modulated using a push-pull amplifier using the same 211 (VT4C) tubes. The video shows the transmitter in full AM operation. I also show how to neutralize the PA when TU units are used that have different serial numbers than the actual transmitter.

Sangean ATS-909x versus Eton Satellit: CKZN St Johns 6160 kHz, 300 Watts TX power?
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on May 16, 2017
Hi there, here's the first comparison of these two receivers in darkness, using a 50 metre longwire. The signal here from CKZN has been previously stated at 1 KW, although right now short-wave.info is suggesting 300 Watts. If anyone with local knowledge has more information I'd be very grateful. Either way, an excellent performance from both receivers. The recovered audio on the Eton is clearer to my ears, but that's qualitative and as usual, I'd be interested in your views. What I can say is that there seems to be little difference in the reception of the actual signal. Recorded in Oxford UK on 13/05/17 at 01:51 hrs UTC. Ignore the clock time-difference, there was only a few seconds between recordings. Thanks for watching.

HRN 320: The Free Dating Show on Ham Radio Now
    HamRadioNow

    Published on May 16, 2017
Gary KN4AQ had a massive-ish technical failure on his Wirecast system that records and switches the video for the shows. So Marty KC1CWF (Chicken With Fries) stepped in to put the show on Facebook Live (on the HamRadioNow Group). That meant Marty took over and declared the show a PhasingLine Podcast.

HamRadioNow co-host David Goldenberg W0DHG and HamTalkLive's Neil Rapp WB9BPG joined in for this free-for-all.

Oh, and "Free Dating Show" is technically click-bait, we suppose. But it's innocent enough. Gary used voice-recognition to title the show on Facebook, and he said "Pre-Daton Show". The phone wrote down "Free Dating Show". So that's that.

RaDAR Challenge @ 65°N Review, Lessons Learned, April 2017 Ham Radio
    OH8STN

    Published on May 14, 2017
    Hello Operators.
In this week's video, we go back and review the RaDAR Challenge from 01 April 2017. This was an exceptionally tough video to make, as it forced me to accept the realities of operating man-portable, at 65 degrees North. Even though the challenge arrived at the tail end of winter, the reality this far north is still very different from our neighbors operating in the South.
if nothing else, I hope this video gives you ideas which help you improve your own man-portable Amateur Radio Adventures in poor weather.

Hi there, another first reception - this is the first time I've heard CRI from their relay in Mali. An excellent start to my DXpedition (o.k. it's meant to be a holiday, but these days it counts as both lol. Recorded on 20/05/17 at 22:58 hrs UTC and note this is two videos 'stitched' together. Thanks for watching.

DXpedition Crete: Bonito MegActiv MA305 & Eton Satellit
    Oxford Shortwave Log

Hi there, the trip to Cape Verde was scuppered and so here I am on the beautiful island of Crete. Thunderstorms the first night wasn't much of a welcome, but in the early hours of this morning I was able to set up the Bonito MegActiv MA305 and Eton Satellit on my large balcony. Some very interesting catches were had, particularly considering hotels and what are essentially public access buildings have a tendency to be electrically very noisy. Both the MA305 (powered via USB) and the Eton performed really well. Reception videos to follow. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, this was a pleasant surprise as it's first time I've copied NHK World Radio Japan on this frequency. The Bonito MegActiv MA305 coupled to the Eton did a superb job from my balcony. Recorded on 20/05/17 at 23:13 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
