Jerry is super stoked by amateur radio satellites, and at one time I have dabbled in AMSAT operations.. But never to this extreme.

Tuning Shortwave using a Grundig Music Boy 50 RP 5200.

I am on a part-time mission to tune shortwave bands using everything including cheaper consumer radios (but SW band is a must) like this one.

CRI Russian also English multiple frequencies
RRI in something like Arabic, others I didn't identify

    Pros:
Usable Shortwave signal can be had.

    Cons:
    No fine tuning, poor selectivity
Analog dial which also very short so no guessing the frequency.

TelescopeMan advises new ham radio operators to consider a mobile radio before buying an HT- hand held radio.

His recommended radios are: Kenwood 281a for 2 meter only, or a TYT 9800 dual band cross band repeat. Both radios are low cost and work very well.

    Published on Jul 2, 2017
Here is my decode of the Shortwave Radiogram broadcast today on 11580Khz shortwave radio at 2030UTC in MFSK32 and with 7 SSTV images. The broadcast was received in Toronto on my Icom IC-R9500 radio, recorded via timer (I was out enjoying a long weekend BBQ) using Audacity and later decoded with the Linux version of FLDIGI. Many thanks to Kim Andrew Elliot for continuing these interesting broadcasts in his retirement.

Facts & and difference to the Export version. Schematic diagram and PCB. Includes also a big picture show about the 40ch, 120ch and the 400ch Versions. The Soundtrack "N5 from outer space" by Alexander Robotnick & Ludus Pinski.

You can extend your local radio range to regional comms using the 2m band with SSB, CW or digital modes and a good Yagi-Uda antenna. Yagi calculator: http://www.k7mem.com/Electronic_Noteb...

    BBC Received with Hammarlund SP-600
    Dan Hawkins

    Published on Jul 4, 2017
This is BBC on 9740 kHz during the 1100 UTC hour, July 4, 2017. This is excellent signal quality for a transmission spanning a distance of 8,500 miles, but it was better an hour earlier. This is the BBC relay in Singapore (Kranji). Radio: Hammarlund SP-600 JX-21. Antenna: 106' backyard long wire. Location: Davis, California.
Details: I usually use the 8 kHz IF filter on strong signals. However, this frequency was close to other strong stations. I selected the 1.3 kHz crystal filter and used the XTAL PHASING control to detune selectivity as wanted. Audio gain was cranked up. This tuning resulted in the nice reception you hear in this video.

Russian E07 "English Man" number station (with preceding, strange test transmission)
    Curt Rowlett

    Published on Jul 5, 2017
Russian E07 "English Man" number station at 13363 kHz (long message with preceding, strange test transmission). I tuned in early to catch this number station and caught a rather strange test transmission on frequency prior to the numbers being transmitted. As you can see/hear, it started with a sound burst, then a strong carrier tone, then what sounds like XPA polytone sync tones. (Numbers transmission starts around the 7:06 mark).

    More info at: http://priyom.org/number-stations/eng...

Update: After I posted this video, I was contacted from a person in Germany who stated that the sound burst is "a variant of the Russian Mazielka selcall system called X06, in this case X06b, because this scale consists in less than 6 tones: "1-6-" (the lowest and highest tone of the scale, both in double-length)."

Since I had never heard of this, I looked it up. The X06b is an interesting signal: http://priyom.org/diplomatic-stations...

    More about X06 here: http://www.sigidwiki.com/wiki/Mazielk...)

Radio Mali 5995 kHz, Bamako, copied using Bonito MegActive MA305 antenna
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Jul 5, 2017
Hi there, as I'm sure most you you guys are aware, Mali is one of the most difficult stations to copy with discernible audio. How many nights have I spent looking at their (relatively) huge carrier and not heard any audio. Talking about low modulation doesn't do them any justice lol. Always requiring a DXpedition to the woods or somewhere else that's very quiet with a large antenna to hear any audio - here they are at the first attemp with the MA305 and the standard 22 cm radiating element. Superb job in my opinion.

Recorded in the woods in Oxford UK on 03/06/17 at 22:51 hrs UTC using a Sony ICF-2001D receiver. Thanks for watching.
