Radio Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial 6250 kHz, Malabo (presumed) back on air
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Jul 27, 2017
Hi there, my friend Chuck (NSNorfolk) messaged me this morning to let me know he had a signal with African music on 6250 kHz, suggesting Equatorial Guinea were back on air after several years. This is a PF for me because although I'm sure I have heard them previously, I can't remember a specifically. As regards the quite heavy QRM, this video is an excellent example as to why I rarely bother moving the loop into the garden!

Recorded in Oxford on 27/07/17 around 01:45 hrs UTC using a Yaesu FRG-8800 and Wellbrook ALA1530 active loop antenna (outdoors).

Eton E1: Radio Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial 6250 kHz, Malabo, superb music
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Jul 29, 2017
Hi there, the first outing on the channel for the Eton E1.....supposedly the best portable ever produced - and certainly the only one with the all-round performance to challenge the legendary Sony ICF-2001D/2010. When I first copied Malabo a couple of nights ago, the local QRM around 6250 kHz was pretty bad with the Wellbrook in the garden and it's still there in this recording, but the E1 still produces strong, clear recovered audio. I have to say, the music they're playing from Malabo is absolutely superb. If I knew what some of it was I'd be downloading it from iTunes.

I can already tell from this recording that the E1 is a very special radio, there's no doubt about that. However, to test it's full capabilities requires a trip to the woods. Until then, I've a couple more reception videos from the shack.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 29/07/17 at 00:40 hrs UTC using a Wellbrook ALA1530 outdoors. Thanks for watching.

Alcaravan Radio 5910 kHz, Colombia heard with the Eton Satellit and Sangean ATS-909x
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Jul 28, 2017
Hi there, as many of you will know, hearing Alcaravan Radio in Europe is one of the bigger challanges for the shortwave DXer. Here is a nice signal on both of these portables which I suppose is a result in itself. I think the recovered audio from the Eton is clearer, but hey, after a lot of negative press, isn't it great to hear this exotic station on the Sangean??!! I think so anyway lol.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 13/05/17 at 00:42 hrs UTC. Ignore the clock time-difference, there was only a few seconds between recordings. Thanks for watching.

TelescopeMan does a quick demo of the WSJT-X software for beginners.

Sorry for the echo that occurred during the video it only lasts about 10 seconds. Apparently I accidentally hit the second microphone connection! :) The echo will disappear after a few seconds.

If you look under the MODE tab in the software you will see that FT8 is already selected as a default. Later you can change this to any or the other modes listed.

Check my previous videos on FT8 to see an actual contact.

Went to the river today with a couple other hams to just get a couple hours of QRP portable on a Sunday morning. I used my FT-817 on battery with the MFJ-1899t, did some PSK, almost a complete 30 meter CW QSO, and John had his IC706 with an end-fed with some really good signals. Bands were in good condition this morning

The moral of the story here is if they say the bands are "dead" that day, there is still propagation somewhere. Just a quick look on this video that 10 meters seems quiet. If you didn't know, there are many 10 meter repeaters in the world. Some of these in this video are regulars when listening on 10 FM.

HRN 340: Eclipsing ARES on Ham Radio Now
    HamRadioNow

    Published on Aug 4, 2017
All the chatter about Amateur Radio and the Eclipse (coming August 21 to a sky near you, if you're in the USA...) has been about propagation. What effect will the eclipse have on the bands?

But major HRN fan Mark Cartwright noted that one county in Idaho had declared Eclipse Day to be a State of Emergency.

Think about it. The path of totality is about 70 miles wide, stretching from the Pacific Northwest to the Atlantic in South Carolina. Most of it is in very rural territory, and a few small to medium size cities are right in the middle. Millions of people are expected to flock to that zone. In any given county, it could be tens to hundreds of thousands, depending on expected viewing conditions.

It turns out that emergency management in most areas have been preparing for months. The State of Emergency may (or may not) be a bit too much, but at a minimum, EM is expecting gridlock on most major arteries in the zone. So are astronomers who have experienced total eclipses before.

While an eclipse isn't a 'natural disaster', and won't wipe out communications (maybe a little on HF), that many people in rural territory will certainly overload the cell system.

Does Amateur Radio have a role? And are ARES groups stepping up to fill it?

This show began as an off-line Skype discussion between hosts Gary KN4AQ and David W0DHG. At some point, David said 'this ought to be a show', and Gary pushed the Facebook Live button. Gary and David are essentially in their pajamas (you can be grateful they don't sleep au naturale). Gary didn't record the show locally, so the video you see is lifted from Facebook, and is low-resolution. Look for all the comments about it being 'fuzzy' and you'll be able to tell who reads show descriptions, and who doesn't

We'll probably do another show after we've rounded up a few ECs, etc. in the zone to talk to about what they're planning.

Gary shows some maps of the path of totality. You can see it here:

Vietnam is difficult for me since the antenna points south but it is always fun to listen when the signal is strong enough

Russian S06s "Russian Lady" number station at 10250 kHz (long message). Very strong carrier signal was present and two tests tones of unknown type were sent prior to transmission (though I missed recording them). More info at: http://priyom.org/number-stations/sla...

Radio Alcaravan, Puerto Lleras. First noted fading in at 0520 UTC, but didn’t become strong until past 0600. Latin guitar music programming and occasional announcements and chat. I haven’t heard this one in a long time (since last year), it just doesn’t seem to make it to Mount Evelyn very well, so it was pleasing to hear it out in the bush at Mount Beenak using a random long wire and no noise with the FRG100 receiver on June 14, 2017.

Radio Vanuatu - Winter Daytime Reception

Although there's no signal strength registering on the S-meter, Radio Vanuatu can easily be heard in this low noise environment of Mount Beenak on my winter DXpedition in June 2017. Great reception for the middle of the day on 7 MHz!
