On How NCIS TV Show Maligned Amateur Radio Service (Full UHD Version)
    NW7US

    Published on Nov 8, 2017
Skip to start of NCIS comments: 1:33

In this video, I first comment on my new headset microphone. Then, I report on how some amateur radio operators feel that the writers of the NCIS Episode 336, "Trapped," maligns the ham radio service. Here is more information: http://ncis.wikia.com/wiki/Trapped_(e...)

While I share some thoughts on the portrayal of the Amateur Radio Service by the Hit TV Series, NCIS, I still enjoy the show and I was entertained by the episode. In this video, however, I do clarify the difference between CB radio and ham radio. Mind you, I have nothing against CB radio operators.

Here are some links of interest:

The episode, "Trapped," aired on October 31st, 2017. Information: http://ncis.wikia.com/wiki/Trapped_(e...)

Thanks for watching and listening. Please comment on the clarity of the headset mic. And, share your thoughts on the topic.

My friend over at Ham Radio Now has an episode in which he features the NCIS episode. Here is the link: https://youtu.be/Va9xoGRUHLQ

    =============

A fellow amateur radio operator has created a petition.

There is a petition on Change.org to tell CBS to air a special about what amateur radio accomplished in Puerto Rico. This is in response to the way in which they horribly misrepresented amateur radio in the recent episode of NCIS.

    https://www.change.org/p/cbs-air-a-sp...

    =============

Footnote: Some hams like to criticize that I'm making a big deal about nothing. All TV shows are inaccurate in most everything. My response is that I think it is relevant that we use these opportunities to promote a positive view of our service and hobby. This video isn't primarily aimed at those of us in the know. There are many who are not knowledgeable about the modernity and service of amateur radio, let alone anything specific. Hopefully, this vlog entry encourages some interested soul in looking further into the hobby. Some hams may skip out after minute one, but others may find it reinforcing to reflect on what the modernity of our radio service. Perhaps, too, some ham, here, will find the video useful in sharing with a non-ham community. Who can know?

    Daytime comparison of shortwave receivers.
    Phil Ireland

    Published on Nov 13, 2017
Here's a quick comparison of some old school analogue shortwave receivers against a current model.
Radios are JVC 6600 FV, Braun T-1000CD (I couldn't remember the model while doing the video..... seniors moment! ) and the Eton Grundig Satellit Executive.
All hold their own in trying conditions for shortwave. There's nothing better than tuning around the bands with a good analogue receiver!
Hope you enjoy, Cheers....... Phil vk2gjf

A look at an old school analogue shortwave radio
    Phil Ireland

    Published on Nov 13, 2017
Here I'm looking at a National Panasonic RF-1400 multiband analogue radio. No FM but an MW band and 3 SW bands covering 530khz to 26mhz. I must emphasis that you shouldn't overlook early shortwave radios. They perform well and offer hours of fun tuning around the bands. The RF-1400 dates from the late 60's and still gives great service.
There is a variation that offers FM at the expense on one of the SW bands but these were mostly seen in the US.
    Hope you enjoy.
    Cheers...... Phil vk2gjf

Hi there, it's always interesting to compare reception of Tropical band stations in Europe and on the same continent of transmission. Whilst often there seems to be little difference in reception, despite the significant additional distance, here the signal from Radio Voz MIssionaria is booming into Rio Capim on the Midi and the Eton.

Recorded on 26/10/17 at 02:26 hrs UTC using a 20 metre long wire antenna. Thanks for watching.

Hi there, another regional signal booming into Rio Capim on the Midi and the Eton. The little Midi analogue radio with the digital frequency counter is actually a pretty good receiver and the frequency displayed is far more accurate than a traditional dial and pointer.

In todays video I do a tour around an incredible website.
The site is QRZCQ.COM and this site offers many advantages over the other dinosaur Ham radio call lookup sites out there.
This modern amateur radio website has many features that the others don't have.
The best part of all is that it doesn't bombard you with useless and annoying flashing GIF advertisements...Really , who even has those things in 2017 ?

Without doubt QRZCQ - is the BEST Ham Radio call-sign lookup website out there and is a great resource for Ham Radio operators AND Shortwave Radio listeners.

A Big MW Box Loop Antenna that pulls in the DX.

A Big MW Box Loop Antenna that pulls in the DX.
After a fairly good result with my small MW Box Loop antenna for Medium Wave and Shortwave I wanted a better version with more gain.
    https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&vide...

In todays video I show a Medium Wave Box loop antenna that is awesome.
While it can be tuned for any frequency on the Medium Wave band, I have it set to 1215kHz so I can pick up Absolute Radio from the UK.

This bigger box loop was only meant to be a temporary antenna , but it seems to be staying up for at least winter.
Perhaps I will make a better version that can handle to weather better next summer.

My best reception of TR1 Watan Radio 279 kHz, Turkmenistan; with Perseus SDR and Wellbrook ALA1430
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Nov 15, 2017
Hi there, in a very kind gesture, my buddy Dan Goldfarb offered me his Perseus SDR because he wanted to see it in action with some 'performance' antennas - and of course I was very grateful indeed to accept. Having got it up and running very quickly yesterday on my Windows 10 laptop, I checked out LW to kick things off. Now, despite having almost no experience with the Perseus, it became very obvious, very quickly that this is a superb receiver. Here is easily my best reception of TR1 Watan Radio, Turkmenistan....and it was about the first signal I tuned into. Prior to this, I did recently copy this station at home in the shack with the Eladf FDM DUO, however, the recovered audio was much weaker. This bodes very well and of course I'm looking forward to further testing.

Recorded in Oxford UK on 15/11/17 at 01:22 hrs UTC. Thanks for watching.
