Here is my decode of the Shortwave Radiogram broadcast today on 11580Khz shortwave radio at 2030UTC in MFSK32 and FLAMP (didn't decode) with 4 SSTV images (the 3rd image didn't complete). There is news of biodegradable plastic, Russian media troubles, and Christmas markets overcrowding. Signal was very good. The broadcast was received in Toronto using my Icom IC-R8600 radio and decoded with the Linux version of Fldigi.

I recently purchase the MFJ-1886 Receiving Loop Antenna for $249 and $45 for shipping via FedEx. This antenna can receive from 500 kHz to 30 MHz. I currently have mounted on a 9 feet closet pole on an patio umbrella stand on top of a outdoor storage container for a total height of around 13 feet from the ground. The antenna is currently connected to the boiler basement running with 50 feet of LMR 400 low loss coax cable.

HRN 374: (Chicago) Marathon Man on Ham Radio Now
    HamRadioNow

    Published on Dec 15, 2017
The New York Marathon. World's biggest, right? And Ham Radio is huge there.

The Boston Marathon. Ham Radio is big there, too. And it's, what, #2?

Nope. Worldwide, it's not even close. In the USA, it's #3 (as of 2015, anyway, the last year a quick web search had stats).

So who's #2. The Marine Corps Marathon in DC? Nope. (But ham radio is big there, too).

#2 is Chicago. The perpetual Second City (even though Los Angeles took that USA title a few decades ago). And yes, even though you've never heard of it, nearly 150 hams pitch in to help it run smoothly.

Rob Orr K9RST has been the lead ham for the Chicago Marathon for the past decade, recruiting from a coalition of radio clubs and individual hams to provide communications for the medical side of the event (similar to the ham's mission at Boston). And as you'll hear, he really has a handle on it all.

Host David Goldenberg W0DHG leads this chat, as Gary KN4AQ hides behind the scenes (mostly). And note that this is the usual in-depth interview, but the show really runs about 95 minutes, and the rest is the 'post-show party' (aka The Best Part of the Show).

A look at MW on the Tecsun S-8800
    Phil Ireland

    Published on Dec 15, 2017
Here's a look at the much maligned mw performance of the Tecsun S-8800. Despite the poor conditions and camera shake by the dodgy operator, I think the S-8800 isn't too bad as it certainly is good for local and not too distant stations during the day. I was pushing it too the limit and to be fair even a superb mwdx receiver like the Digitor struggled with 594 khz ABC Western Victoria under the noisy conditions. The PK Inductive Loop certainly bought a signal out of the noise, just, so I can say with confidence that the S-8800 coupled with an inductive loop won't disappoint on mw.
Thanks again to Garry Cratt from Tecsun Radio Australia for supplying the radio for reviews and please visit their website to support those who support shortwave enthusiasts. This radio is a replacement for the one shiwn on the first video and is fully operational.
More videos to follow as the S-8800 is superb on sw and fm.
    Cheers......... Phil vk2gjf

    The Tecsun S-8800 on shortwave
    Phil Ireland

    Published on Dec 16, 2017
Here's a look at the Tecsun S-8800 on a few shortwave frequencies. I've selected the Tecsun S-2000 to compare with as it's good to see the difference between analogue technology and DSP. On tough signals the S-8800 outperforms the S-2000 and as such, makes the S-8800 a worthwhile addition to any shortwave enthusiasts arsenal. The recovered audio is good and the DSP filtering makes signals just that bit easier to decipher.
There's many videos on the features of the S-8800 so I've skipped that element and jumped into subjective comparisons as I believe the proof is in the listening.
Again thanks to Garry Cratt from Tecsun Radio Australia for supplying the test 8800. I encourage you to visit their website for further details.
    I hope you enjoy.
    Cheers......... Phil vk2gjf

This is a recording I made from Short Wave Radio in 1976, probably on the 41 Metre Broadcast band. It is a recording of Radio Moscow's Moscow Mailbag Presened by Doris Maximova and Edward Diablov. Moscow mailbag was a programme for short wave Listeners which answered questions sent in about the Soviet Union. At The Time, most nations were broadcasting in the English language beaming signals all over the world. Radio Moscow was no exception and could be heard loud and clear right across Europe and beyond These transmissions could be picked up using just a small transistor radio with a small telescopic whip antenna. In my case it was coincidentally a Russian made Vega Selena. I still have one of these radios today and it amazingly still works after all those years! I hope you enjoy the programme.

Here is my decode of the Shortwave Radiogram broadcast today on 11580Khz shortwave radio at 2030UTC in MFSK32 and various PSK modes (ready on the pause button) also using FLAMP and with 4 SSTV images. There is news of books for radio listeners, Electronic waste, Journalist errors, China internet conference, Radio telescopes in Australia and a super massive Black Hole. Signal was good with some fading. The broadcast was received in Toronto using my Icom IC-R8600 radio and decoded with the Linux version of Fldigi and FLAMP. Many thanks to Kim for another interesting broadcast.

A look at the Tecsun S-8800 shortwave receiver
    Phil Ireland

    Published on Dec 17, 2017
Thanks to Garry Cratt for supplying the Tecsun S-8800 for review. Please visit their website for more information. This is a feature laden radio exhibiting excellent performance on SW and FM and notable MW performance. Audio is excellent. While it would've been good to have an RF Gain control, the attenuator does a reasonable job. I can recommend this radio to the shortwave enthusiast.
    Hope you enjoy.
    Cheers.......... Phil
