How to Setup Your Receiver for Optimal Performance (IC-7300 & IC-7610)
    Rate My Radio

    Published on Jan 12, 2018
In this video Jarrad (who is a little sore today) demonstrates how to setup your transceiver's receiver for optimal performance.

Rob Sherwood points out that many Hams are not comfortable with using the RF Gain and Attenuator features, even though these features are essential to get the most out of modern SDR Radios and even Boat Anchors such as the Yaesu FT-101E.

We discuss how and when to use the Attenuator and RF Gain controls so that the band noise doesn't trigger the AGC function of the receiver, and how to ensure you're making the most of your receiver's dynamic range.

We also cover how these controls impact S meter readings, and why Ham's shouldn't worry about it.

Additionally, we demonstrate how useful the Auto Notch function can be, by emulating a LID tuning up on a DX Station's Frequency! :)

The 60 meter frequencies are very under used, sometimes hard to find anyone there. But I wanted to at least educate you about the band, so IF you intend on trying to use it, you are aware of the operating parameters.

XHDATA D-808 receiver: unboxing and first impressions, with a brief overview of features
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Jan 13, 2018
Hi there, here are my initial impressions of the XHDATA D-808 and a an overview of the main features/ controls. This receiver was recommended to me by my good friend Thomas Brogan and when the UK price reduced to around £60 just before Christmas, I decided to treat myself. Here is the unboxing and an overview of the main features etc. I read somewhere this radio utilises the same DSP receiver chip as the Eton Satellit - and a few others of course, so potentially this is an excellent receiver for the serious DXer, for very modest money.

    Thanks for watching.

The Ailunce HD1. It's a DMR Radio. It's a Ham Radio. It's both. This promises to be the next evolution in Dual Band DMR handhelds. This time I'm reviewing the first DMR radio that operates the way hams operate. While we're at it, I'll take you through the process of how to build a cqodeplug from scratch. It's actually a pretty simple but time consuming process.

There is news of US-Norway Arctic operations, a bamboo railway in Cambodia, multipath down under and FEMA news. Signal was variable with only a little fading. There will be some muting at the end due to a copyright claim. The broadcast was received in Toronto using my Icom IC-R8600 radio and decoded with the Linux version of Fldigi.

Testing the XHDATA D-808: Radio Guinée 9650 kHz, Conakry, booming into Oxford UK
    Oxford Shortwave Log

    Published on Jan 15, 2018
Hi there, here's a lovely signal from Guinea booming into Oxford via a longwire antenna. The selectivity of the XHDATA D-808 is really excellent and what's more, even on narrow filters, the audio still sounds pretty clear - definitely less muddy than some of my other receivers. Is this a £60 Eton Satellit is different clothes? It's certainly starting to look that way!

Recorded on 14/01/18 at 19:41 hrs UTC using a 50 metre longwire. Thanks for watching.

With a little fading (this may be another rerun due to Arnie's time off), here is today's middle of the week edition of DXers Unlimited, a shortwave radio related program via Radio Havana Cuba on 15140Khz shortwave radio. This is a weekly program on Tuesdays at approx. 2040UTC. The broadcast was tuned in with my Icom IC-R8600 radio in Toronto.

Full WLO Marine anti-piracy SITREP report at 8473 kHz

Full WLO Marine anti-piracy SITREP report at 8473 kHz. As noted earlier on my Twitter feed: I recently called WLO Marine to try to find out their schedule for transmitting anti-piracy SITREP messages. I was informed that they actually do not have a set schedule, that they just include them whenever the reports are given to them. So catching one is just random luck.
