THALES CAPTAS-4 Compact at Euronaval 2016
    DefenseWebTV

    Published on Oct 19, 2016
At Euronaval 2016, Thales announced the launch of its new compact CAPTAS-4 towed array sonar, which provides frigates with an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability to support collaborative combat at sea.

The new product is a compact, modular version of the CAPTAS-4 fourring sonar. It requires less room on board the vessel, in particular because it incorporates an optimised deployment and recovery system for the towed array.

The compact version of CAPTAS-4 delivers the same detection performance as CAPTAS-4 with 20% weight reduction and a 50% smaller footprint. In addition, the compact version can be containerised, making it the only product of its kind that can be moved from ship to ship to maximize operational effectiveness.

MOST POWERFUL !!! US Military Amphibious Trucks land on the Beach
    ArmedForcesUpdate

    Published on Oct 24, 2016
A great video of US Military Amphbious tracks landing on beach.
SUSEONG RANGE, Republic of Korea -- On one side of the range, U.S. woodland MARPAT uniforms and the gray Republic of Korea digital camouflage uniforms merge together as the Marines sit shoulder to shoulder on the back of a truck. On the other side, ROK and U.S. Marines wait in the darkness of assault amphibious vehicles, rifles in hand and ready to attack. ROK tanks align and await their opportunity to engage in the fight. Bell utility helicopters are heard approaching in the distance.

The ground shakes as the sounds of explosions begin.

The first shots come raining down toward the supposed location of the enemy. Mortar fire goes off and the riflemen in the back of the trucks jump out and push in toward the tree line. The ROK tanks drive into action followed by the AAVs.
Approximately 600 Marines and sailors from III Marine Expeditionary Force deployed from Okinawa, Japan, to the Republic of Korea for the Korean Marine Exchange Program 16-11 starting June 27, 2016.

The KMEP is always fluctuating for the purpose of advancement in the U.S.-ROK forward readiness. KMEP 16-11 is the first exercise designed to build a regimental-sized Marine Air-Ground Task Force capability within the ROK Marine Corps.
1st Lt. Patrick Vincent, an infantry officer with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, currently assigned to 4th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force under the Unit Deployment Program, said the Korean Marine Corps has never fought with an air combat element, ground combat element and logistics combat element synchronized to take down a large scale strategic objective. Vincent believes working together through an exercise of this size will build confidence within the small units themselves and also the commands.

“We’re showing them how the Marine Corps does [the MAGTF operation] because that’s really what the Marine Corps is best at,” said Vincent. “We’re demonstrating our capabilities with that and hopefully we’re influencing the Korean Marine Corps.”
Preparation for the actual combined-arms exercise was from June 27-July 5. This included small unit training sessions and rehearsals of the big event. During this time, ROK and U.S. Marines integrated and worked together to learn each other’s skills and techniques.

Col. Jong Bum Jung, the 7th regimental commander of ROK Marines, believes that the methods used, with combining the ROK and U.S. Marines into one force, helped complete the mission.

“The rifle company has established combined forces to carry out the exercise and with that I have come to the conclusion that this way of participating was astonishingly effective in becoming proficient with combat techniques,” said Jung. “As a commanding officer I’m feeling very proud.”

Lance Cpl. Ryan Bosler, a rifleman with Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines currently assigned to 4th Marines under the Unit Deployment Program, said integrating the Marines is a must. It allows the Marines to feel alike and more powerful as one.
“They’re our allies,” said Bosler. “One day we might be working together in a real-life situation. It’s important to build that trust and confidence in one another and build those relations with our counterparts. So when that day comes when we actually have to do something together we’re familiar with each other.”

The actual combined-arms exercise occurred July 6, 2016 and included U.S. Marines from 2nd Marine Battalion, 2nd Marines as the main effort with support from Marine Aircraft Group 36 and Combat Logistics Battalion 4. The ROK Marines involved were from 73rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

To finalize the operation, a “Super Huey” lowered into the helicopter pad and dropped off ‘urgent supply’. U.S. and ROK Marines worked together to carry a training casualty into the aircraft and ran away fast before experiencing a blast of wind and dirt. The helicopter took off into the air, the propellers spinning like a giant fan, kicking up dirt and whipping the trees back and forth.

Weapon Systems Used By The Russian Army Against "NATO Strategy" In Eastern Europe.
    Odo Puiu info

Weapon Systems Used By The Russian Army Against "NATO Strategy" In Eastern Europe.

The current NATO force structure in Eastern Europe would be unable to withstand a Russian invasion into neighboring Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, a new think tank study has concluded.

After conducting an exhaustive series of wargames wherein “red” (Russian) and “blue” (NATO) forces engaged in a wide range of war scenarios over the Baltic states, a Rand Corporation study called “Reinforcing Deterrence on NATO’s Eastern Flank” determined that a successful NATO defense of the region would require a much larger air-ground force than what is currently deployed.

In particular, the study calls for a NATO strategy similar to the Cold War era’s “AirLand Battle” doctrine from the 1980s. During this time, the U.S. Army stationed at least several hundred thousand troops in Europe as a strategy to deter a potential Russian invasion. Officials with U.S. Army Europe tell Scout Warrior that there are currenty 30,000 U.S. Army soldiers in Europe.

The Rand study maintains that, without a deterrent the size of at least seven brigades, fires and air support protecting Eastern Europe, that Russia cold overrun the Baltic states as quickly as in 60 hours.

“As currently postured, NATO cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members. Across multiple games using a wide range of expert participants in and out of uniform playing both sides, the longest it has taken Russian forces to reach the outskirts of the Estonian and/or Latvian capitals of Tallinn and Riga, respectively, is 60 hours. Such a rapid defeat would leave NATO with a limited number of options,” the study writes.

During the Cold War, the Russian Army had as many as three to four million members.

The Russian military is listed as having more than 3,000 aircraft and 973 helicopters. On the ground. Russia has 15-thousand tanks, 27,000 armored fighting vehicles and nearly 6,000 self-propelled guns for artillery. While the Russian military may not have a conventional force the sheer size of its Cold War force, they have made efforts to both modernized and maintain portions of their mechanized weaponry and platforms. The Russian T-72 tank, for example, has been upgraded numerous times since its initial construction in the 1970s.

Analysts have also said that the Russian military made huge amounts of conventional and nuclear weapons in the 80s, ranging from rockets and cruise missiles to very effective air defenses.

In fact, the Russian built S-300 and S-400 anti-aircraft air defenses, if maintained and modernized, are said to be particularly effective, experts have said.

In the air, the Russian have maintained their 1980s built Su-27 fighter jets, which have been postured throughout the region by the Russian military.

Often compared to the U.S. Air Force’s F-15 Eagle fighter, the Su-27 is a maneuverable twin engine fighter built in the 1980s and primarily configured for air superiority missions.

Russian Armed Forces Against Missile Shield NATO’s Romania & Poland.

Russian Armed Forces 2o17 Against Missile Shield NATO’s Romania & Poland.
Can Russia Destroy US Missile Defenses In Europe?

Russia believes shield is intended to weaken its nuclear capabilities, which US officials insist is not the case.
The US has switched on a missile shield in Romania that it sees as vital to defending itself and Europe from long-range missiles fired by rogue states, prompting anger from the Kremlin which believes the shield’s main goal is to weaken its own strategic nuclear capabilities.
The eventual missile shield will stretch from Greenland to the Azores, and will be ready by the end of 2018. US will break ground on a final site in Poland. The proposal was first agreed by the administration of George W Bush a decade ago and is a longstanding gripe for Moscow, despite repeated assurances from Washington that it is not aimed against Russia.
Control of the missile shield will be handed over to Nato, with command and control run from a US airbase in Germany.
However, relations between Russia and the west have deteriorated in the past two years, with the annexation of Crimea and the war in east Ukraine. Europe is more concerned about the security threat from Russia than at any time since the cold war, while Moscow is convinced Nato and the west are attempting to encircle it. Russia is reinforcing its western and southern flanks with three new divisions, while Nato is strengthening its presence in eastern Europe.
At a cost of billions of dollars, the missile defence umbrella relies on radars to detect a ballistic missile launch into space. Sensors then measure the rocket’s trajectory and destroy it in space before it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere. The interceptors can be fired from ships or ground sites.

BEST OF THE BEST !!! US Military Tank Crews compete for the Sullivan Cup
    ArmedForcesUpdate

    Published on Nov 4, 2016
US Military Hosts the Sullivan Cup to find the best tank crew in the US Army. FORT RILEY, Kansas – Four Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, will represent the “Big Red One” at the annual Sullivan Cup Precision Gunnery Competition May 2-6 at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Representing the division are Staff Sgt. Eric Engstrom II of Becket, Massachusetts; Sgt. Johnathan Alejandro of Pasadena, California; Pfc. Avery Randle of Monticello, Indiana; and Pvt. Logan Bontrager of Middlebury, Indiana.
The Sullivan Cup competition brings together the best tank crews from the U.S. Army and Marines, as well as select international partners, and tests them in tank crew maneuver, sustainment and gunnery skills.
“The Sullivan Cup is a competition named after Gen. (Gordon) Sullivan, who exemplified everything that an armored crewman should be,” Engstrom, the team’s tank commander, said. “It’s a competition to figure out who the best is. They bring everybody together in a friendly environment and, through a series of events, we compete against each other and see how we rank.”
Sullivan commanded the 1st Inf. Div. from July 1988 to July 1989 and later served as the 32nd U.S. Army chief of staff. Being selected to represent the Big Red One was no easy task for the team. After months of grueling exercises and training at Fort Riley, the crew was ranked among other teams throughout the division before a physical fitness test separated them from the rest.
“It’s a great feeling to be representing something so big,” Randle, the team’s loader, said. “It makes me feel proud of myself and it makes me happy that my family can see this and be proud of all of the things I’ve done.”
Following the selection, the team began to train in earnest for the challenges they would face at Fort Benning.
“We get support every day by our first sergeant,” Alejandro, the team’s gunner, said. “We meet up with him every morning at like (6 a.m.). It’s rough because it’s strenuous and the type of workouts that we’re doing are not the type of workouts we’re used to doing, but we know what we’re going up against so we’re excited for the challenge.”
Crew members said in order to be successful, they will have to work well together as a team, something the four have been doing for only a few months.
When the team first got together, “immediately we all fit in and worked pretty well together,” Bontrager, the team’s driver, said.
“We have a great chemistry,” Randle added. “I couldn’t have asked for a better crew.”
Each team member is motivated by different factors to do their best. Bontrager said the competition will help steer his Army career in the right direction, while Alejandro wants to set a positive example for his children.
“I want my kids to look back and be like ‘my daddy worked hard, and these are some of the things he did,’” he said. “I’m trying to give back and show my kids that when you work hard good things happen.”
Engstrom and his team received the full support of their leaders since they began down the road to the Sullivan Cup and expressed how they want to make the division proud.
“I want to represent Fort Riley and the Big Red One to the best of my ability,” Engstrom said. “I know that we’re going to get down there and have the opportunity to do great things and I want to achieve all of the goals that I have going down there.”
In the end, it’s a competition, and there is one thing the team really wants above all else.
“I want to win,” Engstrom said. “Why would I go if I didn’t want to win?”

    • The new Russian main battle tank is designed to protect the vehicle's crew on the battlefield
    • UK stalled new tank design as heavy armour is not useful against lightly-armed and highly mobile jihadis
    • Russia's new tank is faster, lighter and lower than the British Challenger II main battle tanks

WORLDS BEST !! German Made Leopard 2 Tank in Military Training
    ArmedForcesUpdate

    Published on Nov 13, 2016
A great Video of the NATO Military leopard 2 tank in Military Exercise. TOPEKA, Kan. - Kansas became the fourth state in the country to be issued the newly-manufactured M1A2 System Enhancement Package Version 2 Abrams tanks. Soldiers of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment received 15 of the advanced weapons systems May 31 at Fort Riley, where they spent the day performing inventory and system checks on the tanks.

“We were originally slated to receive M1A1 AIMS Abrams,” said Capt. Jonathan D. Bjorgaard, commander of Company D, of Emporia. “But at the last minute, the National Guard was authorized to receive an additional battalion set of the M1A2 SEPv2 Abrams this fiscal year.”

Competition between states to receive the tanks was fierce. Each was judged over a wide range of categories, but Kansas was ultimately selected.

“The CAB’s high readiness metrics and strength numbers definitely played a role in our selection,” said Bjorgaard.

With new equipment comes new training and a new group of instructors to educate Soldiers about the latest weapons in the Kansas arsenal. This team of instructors consists of retirees of both active-duty Army and National Guard Soldiers, all of whom are experienced tankers.

Jeff McCree, a veteran with 21 years of service as an active-duty tanker, is one of these instructors.

“When it comes to tanks, if it’s been broken or been done, we’ve done it,” said McCree. “We try to share our successes as well as our mistakes. We bring a lot of experience to the training.”

This group of trainers, based out of Michigan, will travel to Kansas to work side-by-side with Soldiers of the CAB for the next year, bringing them up to speed on the differences and improvements in the new tanks.

Externally, even an experienced observer would have trouble distinguishing the new M1A2 SEP v2 from its M1A1 predecessor, but according to McCree, the interiors are vastly different.

“It would take days to list the improvements,” said McCree. “Everything has been improved.”

One of the most noteworthy innovations of the SEP v2s is the new Common Remotely Operated Weapons Station system.

The CROWS II allows the tank commander to acquire and engage targets without exposing himself to enemy fire. On the previous M1A1 model, the tank commander could only perform this task by looking out of the hatch on the top of the tank, making himself vulnerable to enemy fire.

Spc. Gary Stone, a tank driver/loader with Company C, of Lenexa, is excited to use the CROWS II system for the first time.

“The new features are exceptional,” said Stone. “It helps you get situated faster and to be more efficient on the battlefield.

“I’m really looking forward to gunnery next year,” said Stone. “We’ll be performing multiple target engagements using the new CROWS II system. I can’t wait to find out how it’s going to work.”

In addition to the improved technology, the new condition of the equipment will make a difference in the quality of training for Soldiers this year.

“Our previous tanks had seen many years of use and were not always reliable, often interrupting training with system failures,” said Bjorgaard. “The new tanks will allow us to conduct better training as the reliability will be less of a concern.”

The CAB is expected to receive 14 additional M1A2 SEP v2 tanks this September, bringing their total count to 29.

“They are the most advanced ground weapons system in the Army’s arsenal,” said Bjorgaard. “We are honored and excited to have the opportunity to train with them.”

SKYNET IS COMING !!! US Military Tests New Robot Technology in Military Exercise
    ArmedForcesUpdate

    Published on Nov 14, 2016
Get ready Skynet is coming soon as US Military tests new robot technology. MARINE CORPS TRAINING AREA BELLOWS, Hawaii – Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning visited the Pacific Manned Unmanned – Initiative (PACMAN-I) training site as part of his trip to U.S. Pacific Command and spoke to U.S. Army Pacific Soldiers of the 25th Infantry Division about the importance of their contributions to the initiative July 26.

From gaining a bird’s eye view to moving assets by remote, these Soldiers were able to test and operate new robotic prototypes for more than two weeks as part of the event.

“There’s two things to dealing with emerging threats… one is getting the right technology, acquiring it, building it, procuring it but the second is actually getting it into the field, getting it into the hands of Soldiers,” Secretary Fanning said. “What’s great about PACMAN today is we did that.”

Tollie Strode Jr., Maneuver Center of Excellence Maneuver Battle Lab senior project officer, Fort Benning, Ga., explained the overall importance of trying to employ these innovative capabilities in the field.

“PACMAN-I is a step in a process that started in 2014 at the Maneuver Battle Lab,” Strode said. “We got together and looking at DOD guidance and Army guidance, began the process of learning how to fight in formations with robotics to do the things that you would expect those robotics to do. Allow us to see further, allow us to shoot at those targets that may have been acquired, and then to improve the survivability and the mobility of the force and the Soldiers that are fighting.”

Although the manned and unmanned prototypes can perform in a combat role, Strode emphasized that they can also be effective in other ways in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.

“These capabilities aren’t just for combat operations, they also have a stability and support role,” Strode said. “When we have Soldiers who know how to use these systems, when we go to a place where there may be the need for us to do reconnaissance type work in a disaster area and find pockets where populations that may be isolated are, they’ll be able to use these systems that way. That isn’t trying to find someone to shoot, that’s trying to find someone to save.”

First Lt. Zachary Short, 1st Platoon, Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th ID, said that his Soldiers were familiarized with the technology for two weeks before conducting practical exercises with them.

“The biggest thing that we need to understand is how the technology that we have at our disposal through this training can help us to be even better and help us to improve our ability to successfully complete the mission,” Short said.

Soldiers operated unmanned aerial vehicles such as the Net Warrior Future Initiative, a small unit mission command system with ground and air asset control, and unmanned ground vehicles such as the Multipurpose Unmanned Tactical Transport (MUTT) vehicle, to execute training scenarios. Staff Sgt. Robert Ramsey and Spc. Cole Cumby had the chance to operate the MUTT and said it definitely had its uses.

“It’s pretty simple to operate,” Cumby said. “There are two different controls, one is used just by one hand and the other actually has a screen on it that controls the turret itself and the MUTT. I like working with it, there’s a lot of good things about it and there are things I’d change about it.”

The experiences the Soldiers had with the technology were recorded by engineers from industries and organizations such as the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center, to improve upon future experiences and refine processes.

“The engineers for the MUTT have been over there with me and my Soldiers every single day asking what we like about it, what’s not great about it, what can they work on, and they’ve been pretty perceptive so I could see them fixing whatever’s wrong with it after this and trying to get it back out to us.”

Secretary Fanning said that receiving feedback from those who use it, the Soldiers, is a vital step to incorporating new and innovative technology.

“We need to be making sure we’re fielding new technology as quickly as we can… we took these new things and we gave them to Soldiers and we had them exercise with them and give us their feedback on what they think is best, how they’d improve it, how they could use it, and there clearly was a lot of excitement out there,” Secretary Fanning said. “It doesn’t do any good if we’re just investing in great technology if we don’t actually get it into the field for Soldiers.”
