'This is an on-the-spot report from the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, as to the activities going on -- activities to prove our military equipment the finest in any Army. Lieutenant John Mortimer interviews key personnel at Aberdeen, bringing out the importance of the individual's job in "testing for the best."' Arms tested include the 280mm Atomic Cannon.

Public domain film from the Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) (sometimes erroneously called Aberdeen Proving Grounds) is a United States Army facility located in Aberdeen, Maryland (in Harford County)...

APG is the U.S. Army's oldest active proving ground, established on October 20, 1917, six months after the U.S. entered World War I. Its location allowed design and testing of ordnance materiel to take place near contemporary industrial and shipping centers. The proving ground was created as a successor to the Sandy Hook Proving Ground, which was too small for some of the larger weapons being tested. At the peak of World War II, APG had billeting space for 2,348 officers and 24,189 enlisted personnel.

    Edgewood Arsenal

Although civilian contractors produced the major fraction of conventional munitions for World War I, the United States government built federally owned plants on Aberdeen Proving Ground for the manufacture of toxic gas. These poison gas manufacturing facilities came to be known as Edgewood Arsenal. Edgewood Arsenal included plants to manufacture mustard gas, chloropicrin and phosgene, and separate facilities to fill artillery shells with these chemicals. Production began in 1918, reached 2,756 tons per month, and totaled 10,817 tons of toxic gas manufactured at Edgewood Arsenal before the November 1918 armistice. Some of this gas was shipped overseas for use in French and British artillery shells.

The Edgewood area of Aberdeen Proving Ground is approximately 13,000 acres and includes Gunpowder Neck, Pooles Island, Carroll Island, and Graces Quarters. The Edgewood area was used for the development and testing of chemical agent munitions. From 1917 to the present, the Edgewood area conducted chemical research programs, manufactured chemical agents, and tested, stored, and disposed of toxic materials...

From 1955 to 1975, the U.S. Army Chemical Corps conducted classified medical studies at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. The purpose was to evaluate the impact of low-dose chemical warfare agents on military personnel and to test protective clothing and pharmaceuticals. About 7,000 soldiers took part in these experiments that involved exposures to more than 250 different chemicals...

Other parts of APG not attached to the main installation include the Churchville Test Area in Harford County, and the Carroll Island and Graces Quarters in Baltimore County, Maryland. The Churchville Test Area is a test track with hills that provide steep natural grades and tight turns to stress engines, drivetrains, and suspensions for army vehicles, including M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and Humvees.

The eastern half Carroll Island was used as a testing location for open air static testing of chemical weapons since the 1950s. During tests of chemical agents and other compounds at Carroll Island, Maryland, from July 1, 1964 to December 31, 1971 nearly 6-1/2 tons of chemicals were disseminated on the test area including 4,600 pounds of irritants, 655 pounds of anticholinesterase compounds such as the nerve gasses Sarin and VX, and 263 pounds of incapacitants such as LSD. Simulant agents, incendiaries, decontaminating compounds, signaling and screening smokes, mustard, and herbicides were also released as well as riot control gasses. The test sites consisted of spray grids, a wind tunnel, test grids, and small buildings...

The Churchville Test Area is a United States Army facility of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, located northeast of Bel Air, Maryland (in Harford county, Maryland, USA).

The Churchville Test Area (39.596°N 76.253°WCoordinates: 39.596°N 76.253°W) is a hilly set of cross-country road test tracks providing a variety of steep natural grades and tight turns designed to stress engines, drivetrains and suspension systems for Army vehicles, such as the M1 Abrams tanks, M2 Bradley fighting vehicle and the Humvee...

NEW TECHNOLOGY Robots for US Military to collect your tax money to pay for F-35 Aircraft
    ArmedForcesUpdate

    Published on Jan 6, 2017
A video on the worlds most advanced new Robot technology. A robot is a machine—especially one programmable by a computer—capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically.[2] Robots can be guided by an external control device or the control may be embedded within. Robots may be constructed to take on human form but most robots are machines designed to perform a task with no regard to how they look.

Robots can be autonomous or semi-autonomous and range from humanoids such as Honda's Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility (ASIMO) and TOSY's TOSY Ping Pong Playing Robot (TOPIO) to industrial robots, medical operating robots, patent assist robots, dog therapy robots, collectively programmed swarm robots, UAV drones such as General Atomics MQ-1 Predator, and even microscopic nano robots. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, a robot may convey a sense of intelligence or thought of its own.

The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots,[3] as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing is robotics. These technologies deal with automated machines that can take the place of humans in dangerous environments or manufacturing processes, or resemble humans in appearance, behavior, and/or cognition. Many of today's robots are inspired by nature contributing to the field of bio-inspired robotics. These robots have also created a newer branch of robotics: soft robotics.

From the time of ancient civilization there have been many accounts of user-configurable automated devices and even automata resembling animals and humans, designed primarily as entertainment. As mechanical techniques developed through the Industrial age, there appeared more practical applications such as automated machines, remote-control and wireless remote-control.

The word 'robot' was first used to denote a fictional humanoid in a 1920 play R.U.R. by the Czech writer, Karel Čapek but it was Karel's brother Josef Čapek who was the word's true inventor.[4][5] Electronics evolved into the driving force of development with the advent of the first electronic autonomous robots created by William Grey Walter in Bristol, England in 1948. The first digital and programmable robot was invented by George Devol in 1954 and was named the Unimate. It was sold to General Motors in 1961 where it was used to lift pieces of hot metal from die casting machines at the Inland Fisher Guide Plant in the West Trenton section of Ewing Township, New Jersey.[6]

Robots have replaced humans[7] in performing repetitive and dangerous tasks which humans prefer not to do, or are unable to do because of size limitations, or which take place in extreme environments such as outer space or the bottom of the sea.
There are concerns about the increasing use of robots and their role in society. Robots are blamed for rising unemployment as they replace workers in increasing numbers of functions.[8] The use of robots in military combat raises ethical concerns. The possibilities of robot autonomy and potential repercussions have been addressed in fiction and may be a realistic concern in the future.

New Russian Weapons 2017 - Kalasnikov Autonomus Robot Tank SORATNIK
    George Dominik

    Published on Jan 3, 2017
New Russian Weapons 2017 - Kalasnikov Autonomus Robot Tank SORATNIK - Russia's Kalashnikov Group has developed an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), unveiling the system at the Army 2016 defence exhibition in Moscow.

    http://www.gdomtv.com/

The BAS-01G BM Soratnik (Companion-in-Arms) has been designated an unmanned combat ground vehicle (UCGV). "It is an innovative platform developed by the military division of the Kalashnikov Group in accordance with the terms of reference issued by the Russian Ministry of Defense," a company spokesperson told IHS Jane's. "Soratnik is intended for combat reconnaissance, fire support for soldiers on the battlefield, mine clearance, logistics operations, and patrolling."

Soratnik is a tracked platform with a combat weight of about 7,000 kg, an operational range of 400 km, a maximum road speed of 40 km/h, and can be remote-controlled out to a distance of 10 km. In addition to direct control, the system can operate with varying levels of autonomy.

The system features an electro-optic suite that enables targets to be detected out to a maximum distance of 2,500 m. Soratnik can be armed with a 7.62 mm Kalashnikov PKT/PKTM or 12.7 mm 6P49 Kord heavy machine gun, or a 30 mm AG-17A Plamya (Flame) automatic grenade launcher (AGL). The vehicle has also been fitted with the latest 40 mm 6G27 Balkan AGL.

When configured for the anti-tank role, the UCGV is armed with eight ready-to-launch 9M133M Kornet-EM (AT-14 Spriggan) anti-tank guided missiles.

"Both domestic and foreign potential customers have shown their interest in the platform," the representative said.

On operations Soratnik can be complemented by two tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed by ZALA Aero, a subsidiary of the Kalashnikov Group.

WORLDS LARGEST US Military Truck and Military Vehicle Upgrade
    ArmedForcesUpdate

    Published on Feb 5, 2017
A great news video on US military modernization. Some say it is the worlds largest modernization program in the world.
Every Marine is a rifleman, but a Marine sniper is not your average rifleman. Their “one-shot one-kill” mindset is heavily influenced by the precision weapons system they use.

The goal of equipping Marine snipers with a superior weapon system brought teams from Marine Corps Systems Command’s Infantry Weapons Systems and Marine Corps Scout Sniper Instructor School to Fort A.P. Hill, Va., for a market research caliber study on a hot, muggy day in July.

“As the Marine Corps’ only systems command, it’s essential that we have Marine Corps snipers shooting and Marine Corps acquisition professionals collecting the data,” said Maj. Paul Gillikin, Special Purpose Weapons Team Leader for IWS. “This is a Marine Corps-driven event with Marines behind the guns, but we are still following along with SOCOM and other Joint Service programs. This data will inform our senior acquisition and requirements officials in buying the next rifle system.”

The goal of the caliber study was clear: to inform Marine Corps acquisition leaders about future Marine sniper weapon system requirements, while leveraging what is currently available in the marketplace. The sniper weapon system has three primary components—the projectile, the rifle and the optic.

“You need to understand the application of the weapon system then procure the system as a system,” said Gillikin. “If we want a weapon system capable of engaging targets at, say 1,500 meters, we need to find the right round—the right caliber—to shoot at that range. Once you find the round that best supports the criteria—the 1,500-meter target engagement—you build the rest of the system around it. Even though we are assessing three calibers in this event, we are actively researching other nomenclatures to inform future system procurement.”

Gillikin and his team collected ballistic data on three different caliber projectiles—the 7.62mm NATO, .300 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum—fired by Marine Corps snipers using different rifles at distances ranging from 900 to 1,500 meters to target. For each caliber round, the MCSC team determined the probability of snipers hitting the target at each distance. The six snipers participating in the caliber study routinely hit targets at distances greater than the current standing requirement for Marine Corps sniper rifles.

The snipers also had the opportunity to experience other calibers available across the Department of Defense, industry and those used by U.S. coalition partners, said Gunnery Sgt. Daniel Lalota, the staff non-commissioned officer in charge of the Scout Sniper Instructor School at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

“The event allowed us to see the capabilities and limitations of different calibers and compare them to our existing program of record,” said Lalota, who also participated in the event as a test sniper. “To be able to equip Marines with a weapon system that neutralizes threats in a higher caliber magnum cartridge would essentially save lives on the battlefield.”

When the next sniper rifle system will be acquired and fielded has yet to be determined. Currently, Marines have the M40A6 sniper rifle, which uses the 7.62mm NATO. MCSC began fielding the M40A6—which offers better transportability, concealability and ergonomics than its predecessor—to Marine snipers across the Corps in June.

The caliber research is an essential part of the overall acquisition cycle and will inform the Marine Corps’ Combat Development and Integration Command, which writes requirements for new system procurements, when determining Marine sniper weapon system attributes.

The ultimate beneficiaries of this research, of course, will be the Marine snipers.

“Marine snipers are taking shots way beyond what most infantry guys and riflemen do,” Gillikin said. “That’s why we select our snipers very carefully. It’s not something where you can give a guy a gun and an optic and tell him to go shoot at targets at great distance.”
