C&DMRC Haddon Bank – 00 Gauge train layout

    https://youtu.be/TAK84MAoHSk

    Published on Dec 11, 2014
Presenting the 00 gauge layout from the club which is currently being featured in The Hornby Magazine and Model Rail magazine out now Dec 14 (dated Jan 15). This is my 701st video upload to YouTube.

This 17ft x 12ft finescale layout is one of the main club layouts, has been on the circuit for 14 years, appearing at many shows. It is a continuous run layout with three sections, up and down main, incorporating a goods loop, and a branch line. Large rakes of passenger and goods trains are possible. Location is somewhere in England, possibly central to eastern, but members will run anything as we all enjoy this layout. In fact the movie starts with my own Q1.

It has clever modelling on it with infra-red sensors making things move, and detail in the buildings, with some club members having their name appear as tiny in-jokes!

    30-325 WW1 Ambulance Train No. 40

    https://youtu.be/KzVzZnnSd04

    Published on Jun 3, 2015
The Bachmann WW1 Ambulance Train number 40 is a lovely historic representation of actual trains that were built by the various UK railway companies for use both at home and abroad to being injured troops to hospital.

There is evidence to show that AT40 was used in Palestine but it could equally have been used between South coast docks and hospitals.

The main disembarkation ports in the UK were Dover and Southampton. From February 1915 to February 1919, Dover dealt with 1,260,506 casualties, unloaded 4076 boats and loaded 7781 ambulance trains, which then went off to one of the 196 receiving stations scattered around the UK, including the one in York.

This video is a follow on to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwuSI... and initially details the various problems I encountered with the locomotive and how i fixed them, at the end you see AT40 running along with some other period locos.

AT40 is said to have been converted from a GWR City Class and Midland Clerestory coaches.

Here is Ray's blog page as described in the video: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/inde...

Here is the RMweb link for my topic describing the various issues in more detail: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/inde...

Originally out in the 1950s, this pair arrived late to me in about 1985.

Apart from having later wheels, they are original complete with very old XO4 motors (just re-charged the magnets) they run very well indeed and are the epitome of the rugged train set loco that so many started with!

Here is a short film of the twins running.

    Wrenn 2-6-4T 4MT Maintenance issue
    (MikesMovies)

    https://youtu.be/BmWkCBeMJ1s

    Published on Oct 18, 2015
I have had this lovely Wrenn 2-6-4 for some years now.
From new she had a distinctive grinding sound when running.
However, she was powerful and smooth despite the noise.

Now in 2015 I want to try and get her smooth sounding and running.
I experimented with super neo magnets for the motor back in 2004, but of late have been converting locos back to the original but re-charged magnets.
I did this with this loco but she was terribly weak and could be stalled with no wheel spin at all!
The noise was no better either.
Tech details: Original magnet running 230mA, stall at 700mA.
Neo magnet running 110mA, no stall.
She has been fully stripped down, brushes, springs and brush tubes cleaned.
Bearings checked (balls in place) commutator cleaned. Bearing set to allow just a fraction of up/down movement.
    Oiled correctly all around.
    So, any tips please

In this rather long video we look at in-depth servicing of four Wrenn motor types.

This includes replacement ball bearings and bearing adjustment.
    Re-magnetizing of the motor magnets.
    Fault finding and more.

Towards the end there is a nice running session so you can see and hear how the locomotives run now.

I had a lot of help putting all these tips together! Check out http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/

Also thanks goes to my YouTube contributors for their ideas.

I hope you find this helpful, I don’t profess to be an expert, but I love my Wrenn engines and have tried to do the best for them.

Check out the life like sounds!

In this video I present one of the most stunning locomotives in my collection.

This is Hornby’s 6225 Duchess of Gloucester R2179 that arrived with me in early 2001
6225 Duchess of Gloucester was built in 1938 at Crewe and was put into traffic in May the same year.

Originally built with a single chimney this was changed to a double chimney in 1943.
She was the first to carry the attractive Crimson Lake livery but in April 1944 this was changed to war time black.

The streamline casing was removed in 1947, the locomotive lasted in service until September 1964 having worked nearly 2 million miles

Carry On Crompton BR Class 33 Diesel Electric Locomotive

A tribute to the BR class 33 with real sounds recorded by me back in the early 80s!

Ever since I was a young lad standing on the local footbridge in Havant watching the trains go by, the BR class 33 diesel has always been my favourite.

It was watching the daily tanker train from Fawley near Southampton to Salfords in Surrey with aviation fuel for Gatwick airport that inspired me to become a train driver!

The BR class 33 were built by the Birmingham railway carriage and wagon works and introduced from 1960-62
They were designed expressly for the Southern region and totalled 98 locos in all.
Their generators and traction motors were supplied by Crompton and this earned the locos the nick name Cromptons.
They had a top speed of 85 MPH and a tractive effort of 45,000lbs and a total horse power of 1500.
They were extremely successful if a little nosy and gave fantastic service, a fair number survive today in preservation.
Let’s recreate some of the classic class 33 scenes I recall using my three Heljan OO gauge class 33s.
Another day I’ll introduce my much larger Lima collection.

    BR Diesel Brake Tender
    (MikesMovies)

    https://youtu.be/HMyImJkPzLo

    Published on Dec 14, 2015
This video reviews and runs the Dapol BR Diesel brake tender.
The model is exclusive to Key Publishing and really fills a gap for transition modelers like myself.

While diesel traction had more power the locomotives were generally lighter and this posed a problem for slowing and stopping heavy unfitted trains!

Most freight trains were unfitted, i.e. had no automatic brakes on any of the vehicles relying solely on the locomotive brakes and guards van to slow and stop the train. These brake tenders gave the diesel locos the required brake force.

In the video you will see two ways the brake tender could be used.

Welcome to this special video looking at the venerable BR class 20 or Choppers as they are known.

This video will also be the last filmed on the green baize layout as I have some changes planned that should improve the look of things.

This video has real live sound effects to enhance your viewing experience.

First up we have 20 118 by Bachmann named Saltburn by the sea.
    Next 20 112 by Lima.B

Class 20s were introduced from 1957 under the BR modernisation plan. However they were far more successful than many other designs, particularly in the type 1 classification.

They had no train heating, a maximum speed of 75mph, tractive effort of 42,000 lbs and an engine horsepower of 1000. They are still in service today some 59 years since they first appeared.

The ideal project for a winter’s day for a railway modeler.

I recently found this collection of lovely kit built wagons and have been waiting for the right time to bring them up to spec.

Dust and dirt was removed, couplings tightened up but you joint me in this video for lubrication and wheel gauge adjustment.

Hope this may be of help for others wanting to maintain their stock.

All change on Mike's model railway

Many of you will be familiar with my green layout, initially I had ideas of using the green as an in place green screen however this was not practical and while it has served me well for some time I was aware that for filming the model trains it posed problems with the exposure settings as it was very bright background.

This video charts the change to a properly ballasted track bed which should be far better for filming.

Heljan Class 15 and 16 diesel locomotives. British railways
    MikesMovies

    Published on Mar 14, 2016
Hi everyone, in this video we are going to take a look at two very similar looking diesel locomotives that were both part of the British Railways modernisation plan of the 1950s classes 15 and 16.

A class 15 is in preservation and details can be found herehttp://d8233.org.uk/ They also have two YouTube channels https://www.youtube.com/user/D8233 and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDQH... Plus you can find them on FaceBook https://www.facebook.com/groups/D8233/

The class 15 was introduced between 1957 and 1961, was of Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, maximum speed of 60 mph and tractive effort of 37,500lbs.
The Paxman 16YHXL developed 800 horse power.
The locos became known as BTH type 1’s
Now numbering 44 locomotives they could be found at work on empty stock workings at London's Liverpool Street and on secondary passenger and transfer freights.

The class 16 outwardly very similar to the class 15, they employed the same Paxman engine, developed slightly more tractive effort at 42,000lbs but were less compatible as they used red square multiple coupling code.
Introduced from 1958 and built by The North British locomotive company (NBL) GEC traction equipment was used this time.

This video shows off the two models on a variety of trains and ends with some exciting train cam views courtesy of my Mobius camera.

This is the first full video shot on my newly detailed boards, what do you think?

Thanks goes to Rob Mason from D8233 for allowing me to use the video stills)

RAILROAD STORY VINTAGE LIONEL TRAINS FILM PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD 88144
    PeriscopeFilm

    Published on Mar 17, 2016
This 1951 Castle Films sound short shows a boy playing with a model railroad and his dreams of operating a fast locomotive on the Pennsylvania main line. There are wonderful scenes of real trains, and about three and one half minutes show toy trains. Much of this footage was shot in the actual Lionel Showroom with salesman Myles Walsh demonstrating the layout to a young boy. The film ends with the boy dreaming that he is a locomotive engineer -- so charming and wonderful didn't we all?

Lionel Corporation was an American toy manufacturer and retailer that was in business from 1900-1993. Founded as an electrical novelties company, Lionel specialized in various products throughout its existence, but toy trains and model railroads were its main claim to fame. Lionel trains, produced from 1900 to 1969, drew admiration from model railroaders around the world for the solidity of their construction and the authenticity of their detail. During its peak years, in the 1950s, the company sold $25 million worth of trains per year. Lionel resumed producing toy trains in late 1945, replacing their original product line with less-colorful, but more realistic trains and concentrating exclusively on O-gauge trains. Many of Lionel's steam locomotives had a new feature: smoke—produced by dropping a small tablet or a special oil into the locomotive's smokestack, which contained an electric heating element. Their most popular toy train ever mass-produced was the Santa Fe F3 released in 1948. It was manufactured for 19 years before being discontinued in 1966.

By 1953 Lionel profits reached its highest peak in the postwar era at over $32 million, but as the 1950s progressed Lionel sales began to decline in the growing prevalence of space and military toys and slot car racing sets — all coinciding with the decline in rail travel and the launching of Sputnik, which began the space-race between the United States and Soviet Union, along with the associated military build-up as the Cold War progressed after World War II. What remaining interest in toy and model trains that existed was geared towards HO scale which gradually overtook O gauge in popularity due to its more realistic detailing and smaller size that enabled the enthusiast to do more modelling within the same amount of space. Lionel attempted to keep pace with the changing trends by offering space and military-themed train sets and coming out with their own HO line of trains. Unfortunately, they were never able to reclaim the market share they once held in the toy industry and by 1958 reported a net loss of $469,057.

In 2006, Lionel's electric train, along with the Easy-Bake Oven, became the first two electric toys inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. They published a television advertisement in the mid-1980s with a very well known and remembered jingle, "Lionel Kiddy City, turn that frown [clap, clap] upside down."

Lionel remains the most enduring brand name associated with model trains in the United States, its products prized by collectors. Today, Lionel, LLC owns all of the trademarks and most of the product rights associated with the Lionel Corporation; there is, however, no direct connection between the two companies.

In this video we look at servicing these faithful old motor bogies.
The wheel bearings act as pickup return for the motor, but if worn or dirty this soon causes bad running.
If only there was a way to both lubricate and clean these bearings at the same time!!

Southern Electric Trains. Model railway time machine experience
    MikesMovies

    Published on Apr 24, 2016
Welcome to this very special video, it has taken many very many week to put together as I chose to use some advanced video effects in order to bring you the best possible experience.

Added to the models are recovered and enhanced recordings I made back in the late 70s in and around London, listen out for the classic sound of Southern electric compressors!

The Southern electric services out of south London termini are known around the world, running on 650-750 volts DC current the job of moving large numbers of people, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours is a challenge that the Southern electric’s take in their stride.

As a young lad watching the trains ply to and fro with that classic growl from the 250 HP traction motors and the slam of doors coupled with occasional freight trains is an atmosphere that will always last with me.

In this video then I want to take you back in time to a busy stretch of line just outside on of the big London terminal stations overlooking the river Thames.

We will set our time machine to the summer of 1938, arriving on a blistering hot morning, the heat already causing shimmering effects and there is every chance of a sudden violent thunder storm.

Turn up your volume to enjoy the sounds better.

We see Southern built 1st generation EMUs at work dating from 1925, represented by the much loved Traing EMUs.

A freight train is holding up the 3 SUB hauled by a S15 locomotive.
Joining the 3 and 4 SUBs are some 2BIL units converted from the same Traing stock.

Adding to this historic mix is a Hornby 2BIL again in late 1930s condition.

After observing the hustle and bustle for a while we set our time machine controls to bring us back towards the 1940s and this is denoted by the appearance of a 2HAL unit (by Honrnby)

Coming back still further we pass the 1950s and 60s and the appearance of green 4 CEP units and EPBs.

Another thunder storm breaks out and this causes the controls of our time machine to reset and we are pulled back neared and near the present day corporate blue starts to appear and then blue & grey.

The freight trains are now in the hands of class 73 electo diesels! (Lima)
We then arrive in the late 60s and are lucky to see the Brighton Belle units in 1969 condition at work.
Represented here by Hornby’s lovely model.

Nearing the evening of our time trip, the birds start to sing as Lima class 72 142 Broadlands brings a fertilizer train into view. We must now leave this so familiar and comfortable past behind.

Thanks to Bob Dorkings for the use of his 4 CEP and 2 EPB units.

    Hornby Adams Radial Haulage Test

    Published on Jul 23, 2016
Lets see how strong these 4-4-2 locos are.
In reality they were designed for passenger work not freight, however there are records of them hauling short local freights as required. So we start off with a moderate sized train and work up.

    Rather impressive I think.

OO Limited edition wagons, tankers and vans supporting charities
    MikesMovies

    Published on Aug 6, 2016
The Burnham and District Model Railway Club has come up with this lovely concept!

Providing the customer with some unique wagons and vans but also due to the painstaking research done by John from the club, bringing the history of the companies behind the vehicles back to life with a little card in each box giving all the details.

This is without doubt a labour of love for both John and Dave who handles the orders and dispatch.

Not only that, but by purchasing the vehicles you also help a charity. It’s a win, win situation and BDMRC are to be commended for this fine effort.

This video reviews eight that I recently purchased, the order was handled swiftly and it has been a pleasure to deal with the guys behind this project.

Big model trains running inside my small house
    Jim Zimmerlin

    Published on Jul 12, 2015
Is my train collection too large for my house? Nevermind, I already know the answer. The obvious next step will be to move the whole thing outdoors.

This is a collection of G-scale model railroad trains from LGB and Piko. It starts with a LGB 25554 White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad diesel locomotive pulling freight cars. Next, there's a LGB 21576 Santa Fe diesel locomotive pulling passenger cars. Finally, a Piko 38212 AT&SF steam locomotive provides some pretty cool steam train sounds! I don't know what the deal is with the headlight on that locomotive... it seems to randomly go on and off.

The operation of multiple trains on the same layout is made easy due to DCC - digital command control - which allows you to control each train individually. This includes changing speed and operating the horn and bell of each train. It's a fun hobby!

What you see in this video was the way my train layout was in early 2015. About a year later, I still hadn't stepped up to an outdoor layout... but I came up with a much more elaborate layout for inside the house. Check it out at https://youtu.be/MMVZxWKB-Ls

Model Rail, Bachmann USA S100 0-6-0 Tank locos MR 105 and MR 106
    MikesMovies

    Published on Oct 21, 2016
The Model Rail Exclusive Yankee Switcher (S100) Tank locos by Bachmann and distributed by Kernow Model Rail Centre.

MR-105 and 106 arrived today and this video lets you see the models close up and at work while I try and give you a taste of the interesting history behind these war time locomotives.

MR-105 named Frank S Ross and in Longmoor Military railway was chosen because it is as close to the original batch of locos delivered by the United States Army Transport corps.

MR-106 in weathered condition is a modified loco with square cab windows an extra central window plus a number of other changes from the standard loco.

The cylinder drive to the back axle on these locos really stands out as something different from what we are used to.

I really hope you enjoy the video.

Large Private Model Railroad RR HO H.O. Scale Gauge Train Layout of Bill Otter 's awesome trains
    Lou Costabile

    Published on Oct 29, 2016
Bill Otter, a former Chicago & Northwestern Railroad Employee who used to work in the Operations Department. Well today he shares his awesome HO Scale / Gauge Model Railroad train layout he calls “ The Geneva & NorthWestern Railroad aka Papa Choo Choo’s Railroad ”.

I’ve affectionately called this layout the “ Triple Decker Layout ” because this is one full size layout, on top of another full size layout, on top of another full size layout. The layouts connect with each other in another room that looks like a cork screw of track between the levels. But it’s not over yet, as the layout moves to another room with a beautiful mountain view.

Bill started the layout in 1993. This layout includes 6 divisions with locations to resemble Chicago, Colorado, Florida, Milwaukee, Seattle, Tacoma, and Wyoming.

Every area on the layout is complete. The engines, cars, and scenery on the layout are of the highest quality, add realism, and just a wonderful experience to view.

    This is just amazing!
