    Peugeot 1903 motorcycle
    yesterdaysnl

    Published on Aug 8, 2013
    Peugeot 1903 2HP Type "C" 239 cc

Although a prototype De Dion-engined Peugeot bicycle was displayed at the Paris Salon in 1898, the first motorized cycles to leave the factory were actually tricycles with De Dion & Bouton engines.
The popularity of the tricycle was unchallenged at first, but by 1902 the motorized bicycle started to take the lead: at the Paris Salon in December 1901 81 motorised cycles were exhibited, of which there were only 21 tricycles or quadricycles.
One of the sixty motorized bicycles present was a Peugeot, propelled by a 1 ½ HP ZL engine.
The engine was clipped to the front down tube and had a displacement of 198 cc.
Its weight was only 35 kilograms and a cruising speed of between 25 and 40 km/h was attainable.
For 1903 the engine was placed in the "New Werner Position" and now two models were catalogued, one with 2HP ZL engine and the other with Peugeot's own 2 HP power source, both types having the same cycle parts.
The "Type C' has a bore x stroke of 66x70 mm and the engine is fed by a Longuemare carburetor.
Relatively few of these machines were produced, so this is a pretty rare survivor.
This early veteran is in authentic condition but she will need some TLC to put her back on the road again.

Public service reminder for the folks here who ride. Don't forget to properly break in your new tires before you return to normal riding activities!

Been on bikes my whole life and forgot this little tidbit and was damn near immediately spun halfway around on a dirt trail and pitched into some scrub oak. Bike and I were fine I wasn't going fast and we slid into the brush bottom first so no damage. The sticky mud packed it's self into the nice shiny new tire grooves until it was full up and there was absolutely no traction or stopping.

Had I spun the bitch in some dry sand for a few minutes, like I usually do with new tires, it would have scuffed the shine off and it never would have happened. This slippery new tire thing can happen on the street too with worse results.

So be smarter than me and don't forget the details!

I replaced the front master cylinder on my wife's scooter today. Was kinda hard to find one that would fit and work. She bought a cheap china made scoot and even before time for the first oil change the spring in the master cylinder broke. I found one online, works better than the original, but I'll have to do some fitting on the trim when I reinstall that.

As for riding, it rained here most of the week, but today I saw lots of bikes out on the highway, while all I got to do was ride the mower around on the grass. Maybe tomorrow! I need to go somewhere and get a can of dot4 brake fluid - I was able to save most of the fluid from the old cylinder but still need enough to top it up and bleed the brake system.

When I had the new tire installed on my bike, I took it quite easy the first 100 miles or so, until I got the feel, and yes, the bike did have a different feel to it at first.

Well, now that I've got my camper on order, (post 84 in the "RV's, Campers, Van & Bus Conversions" thread link = http://www.goldismoney2.com/threads/rvs-campers-van-bus-conversions.119611/page-3#post-1260026), with the cross-the-back scooter carrier accessory, I'm "in the market" for a scooter. Maximum weight 170 kg (350 lbs), with full tanks, luggage carriers with helmets & lock-up chains. My old 600 XT Yamaha on-off road will have to go... longer than the width of the van (2.05 meters)... and rear seating position is high & uncomfortable for my wife (in our 60's).

So I'm in the market for a 125cc (too bad they don't have 200cc models for extra "punch", step above becomes "huge" and "pricy"), for "commutes" and "touring" into cities while the camper is parked just outside them during our upcoming travels around Europe. That way we won't be dependent on learning the "public transport" in each place, or have to try parking/driving a camper in an unknown city with narrow streets & one-ways. I'm putting in as much research as I did for the camper... Looking for something not too tall, not too long, not too slow, not too expensive, with good handling & good storage & windshield... and capable of holding a gps & a cellphone in view, plugged in. And especially easy for my wife to climb on, and a comfy seating position for her.

And not some Chinese "toy" that will fall apart within a month... without a "service network".

So far, the closest I've come are from Taiwan... the "SYM Symphony" (bigger wheels = stability) and 5 year / 100.000 km warranty

    and the "KYMKO Like"

    Both just under $3k equipped.

Max speeds around 55mph. Cruising 45mph.

If you go with Vespa or Yamaha/Suzuki/Honda, you're instantly in the $5-6k range...

I like Yamaha myself, but you can't go wrong with a Suzuki or Honda either. Not so sure about Vespa, I've heard parts might be a long wait on those. Just don't do what my wife did and buy a China special deal. Not even a 1000 miles and already I had to replace the front master cylinder - not an easy thing to find.

Oh, yes, I see that now. Then I'd seriously look at the Vaspa first, however, I know very little about what else is available in the European market. Two up on a 125 might not get up and go so good, depending on weight and such. It'd probably work, but there would probably be times, you'd wish for just a little more. I've had a kind of lust for something like this scoot.

The Wind was horrible last night ! and I'm not talking from last nights Dinner... The loud sound against the material of my tent kept me up all night. With no sleep the next day I had a rough time getting going. On top of that I had to battle the worst crosswinds I've ever experienced on a bike. There was extreme wind the Entire 286 kms!! With the lack of sleep and fatigue from battling the wind I managed to drop the bike twice in one day !! I swear I know how to ride people !! Both times the bike was still and the first time I wasn't even on the bike ! The KLR was lowered a couple inches but the kick stand wasn't modified so if the ground was completely flat then it was bound to tip. The second time I dropped it the ground was slightly lower on one side, and the bike being too tall for me, It went down. Frustrations starting to grow as I'm so tired AND tired of dropping this damn bike ! I'm a skilled rider and this is really demeaning. 7 days in now, lack of sleep, and going from dusk till dawn is starting to wear on me, but I try and stay positive.

I'm looking for a lightweight for European city visits. Park the camper at a shopping center outside of town, and not have to learn each city's public transport system, or try to navigate the narrow streets & one-ways with a camper (& find parking!)... I like the Piaggio (Vespa?) 125 Liberty - only weighs 100kg (220lbs) - 60lbs lighter than the two others above... easy to haul around... & big front wheel for stability. ABS for wet cobblestones. Not for doing long road trips, definitely - or roadways above 60mph...

    LIBERTY 125 IGET ABS – 2.449 €

I like that it looks like it is sturdy made, sure plastic, but not cheaply put together. The headlight even turns with the handle bars. The light on my wife's scooter does not turn, so you can not be seen or see as good in short turns. A 50cc might even be lighter, but not give you the get up and go or top end you might need in traffic. Talking about headlights, the light on my wife's scoot sometimes does not work, has not been reliable, plus the issue I had finding a replacement for the front brake lever/master cylinder, so I didn't renew the registration this year. It has been working great since that expired, thinking about renewing it in the spring for use on the back roads. Wife has not been on it in a couple years, but I still use it to puttz around on the property, give rides to the granddaughters. If I'm going out on the highway, I'd of course take the big bike unless I need the van or truck for hauling, well, weather permitting. Good price.

There is nothing on Earth quite like the Isle of Man TT Races. No other motorcycle race is held on such a challenging track as the 37-mile plus Mountain Course with its seemingly never-ending series of bends, bumps, jumps, stone walls, manhole covers and telegraph poles.

The skill, bravery and concentration levels required are immense, with speeds approaching 200mph, and, while difficult to learn and even harder to come first, the rewards for winning on the world famous course are like no other.

No other motorsport event can boast more than 100 years of such illustrious history, rich in tradition and legends, and to have your name inscribed on a TT trophy is to sit with the gods.

TT racing captures the imagination in a way no other race can and its sheer spectacle and uniqueness ensures thousands of fans flock to the Island every May and June for their annual fix.

No other motorsport event attracts people in great numbers for an entire period of two weeks except the world famous TT Races, where fans can revel in the Island’s special mix of incredible racing and world class entertainment – and all set amongst the beautiful scenery of the Isle of Man.

Back to the roots... I remember this (on TV)! (I still have a "Cromwell" helmet, haha!)

    and 10 years earlier...

In the 70's, I went to watch several bike Grand Prix in Europe. Agostini's MV - only 4 stroke among all the rice-burners - sounded the best!

And does the same at Laguna Seca, riding his championship winning 500cc GP bike:

Nice little wave to the fans while going through the corkscrew there! Funny how early on, the Media tried to portray Roberts and Barry Sheene as bitter enemies. Turns out, both men had nothing but admiration, and respect for each other!

A treat for the old folks...

Always admired the "monkeys" - i.e. the "passengers" in the side-car races.... hanging completely outside of the side-car for one turn, then jumping over the back of the driver for the next, and so on...

There's a guy who rides by my house a few times a week on an old Honda CBX. Talk about a distinctive sound. I can hear him coming from a mile away.

    Wanna go for a ride?
This is from my helmet cam on my KLR 650.
Turn your speakers up the mic is inside my helmet so it sounds beautiful.

PS. You will never catch me in my neck of the woods unless I want you to! . . aarock.gif

If only it was warm enough. Some days nothing gets done until I've taken a ride.

I am going to break out the helmet cam again this coming summer and get some more good trail videos. There is a closed trail that winds to the top of an old ski hill I really want to video and I figure I can get in and out of there early in the spring without getting caught.
Nice thing about my KLR 650 is it's really a quiet motorcycle if you just feather the throttle enough to keep going. When you nail it though it gets loud in a hurry!
I finally figured out using an external microphone inside my helmet to blot out most wind noise while still getting good engine sound.
I just didn't mess with it at all last summer. Got lazy! . :2 thumbs up:
