Brook Benton - Walk On The Wild Side (1962) HQ
    MUNROWS RETRO

    Published on Feb 14, 2017
Brook Benton's career spanned the 50's, 60's and 70's and he may be best remembered for his 1971 smash hit single "A Rainy Night In Georgia." This song has nothing to do with Lou Reed's signature sensation, but is from the 1962 film of the same name set in New Orleans starring Jane Fonda, Laurence Harvey, Barbara Stanwyck, and others. Brook Benton's vocal was featured in the film's closing credits and "Walk On The Wild Side" became a hit for him when it reached #42 on Cash Box on March 17, 1962. Some scenes from the film appear in the video along with segments from other "wild" films.

1964 HITS: You Don’t Own Me - Lesley Gore
    MusicProf78

    Published on Feb 19, 2017
You Don’t Own Me (Madara-White) by Lesley Gore, conducted by Claus Ogerman, produced by Quincy Jones

Potentially a strong #1 best-seller in more “normal” times, Lesley’s last major record hit nevertheless stalled for three weeks at the #2 chart position behind the wildly successful new Beatles hit “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” Over the years, “You Don’t Own Me” evolved into a popular feminist anthem, furthered in part from its memorable performance by Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton in the 1996 film “The First Wives Club.”

The Old Lamplighter (Tobias-Simon) Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye, vocal by Billy Williams and Choir (CD audio source)

This Sammy Kaye version came out well on-top among the three top-5 charting "Lamplighters," spending seven weeks at #1 on both the sales and juke box rankings (see also the Kay Kyser and Hal Derwin recordings). Many will remember the 1960 revival of "The Old Lamplighter" by The Browns. Buffalo Springfield - Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing (1966) HQ
    MUNROWS RETRO

    Published on Feb 20, 2017
One of my favorite greatest hits LPs of all time was and is Buffalo Springfield's Retrospective. Many an idle spring and summer day in 1970 and 1971 was spent listening to every track on the album, springs and summers that seemed to stretch out into infinity ... at least as I remember them, during what I call the "giant years" (which included 1968, 1969, and 1972) because they moved so slow and lasted so long. Life should have been so kind all the way through.

One of several tracks on the LP I could never get enough of listening to: "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing." I never fully understood what it all meant, but it sounded so good and so right, and was emotionally moving to hear. I suppose I have not progressed much in my understanding since then regarding this beautiful song. Take whatever meaning it may for you, this is my spin, right or wrong, not that it matters.

Before the song appeared as track number 4 on the self-titled debut album Buffalo Springfield (released on December 5, 1966), it was released twice on singles. Recorded July 18, 1966, it was originally a B-side to the single "Go and Say Goodbye." Too late distributors and producers realized "Clancy" should have been the A-side and re-released the single that way. Unfortunately, as a result, it only charted on Billboard at #110 in August 1966. It doesn't matter in the long run ... time and refection have proven it to be among Neil Young's greatest classic folk rock compositions.
