1890s Rare Antique Nail Gun [Restoration]
    Hand Tool Rescue

    Published on Jun 29, 2017
This 1892 patented Pearson's Nailer restoration was fairly straight-forward. It was made by the Pearson Mfg. Co from 1908-1921. This restoration was mainly aesthetic as the nailer was functioning previously.

I decided to paint the nailer in its original bright blue colour. There was a larger version that was painted red. In most, but not all photos of these nailers online, the cast iron parts seem to be a darker blue than the tin parts. I tried to replicate that look by "staining" the blue paint with some black plaint. I could have used a darker blue paint, but this technique seemed to match what I have seen online.

I also decided to place the writing on the other side of the nailer than where it originally was. This was done because the original side is heavily dented and the writing would not show up as well. In the future, I may add some gold pin-striping as well along the raised lines in the tin parts, as I have seen this is some, but not all photos online.

These nailers were mainly used by roofers to set the nail for driving in by a hammer later on. I'm impressed by how well this tool still works.

I am in the process of building a CNC wood router (9FT x 5 FT x 4 IN) Since I am making my own linear rails, I needed a way to adjust them to make them straight and also parallel. I needed to drill holes about every six inches to be able to shim the rails as needed. So I came up with this little mechanism to do just that. I thought I would share it, maybe someone else can use the idea to make something cool.

I love their Clamps because of the quick release clutch - super handy!

What I love about these "outdoor builds" is that you have very limited resources and you have to deal with whatever the weather throws your way. For this Project I basically only used a Handsaw, a Drill, the Rockler Clamps, a Hammer and a Shovel. Like last year we had a lot of rain and some pretty hefty storms over the weekend. So the structure had to widstand these circumstances.

I am super happy with what I managed to build, especially the swing was a pretty cool feature :)

But I am not a big Fan of the Plastic Handles so I decided to make my new knife a bit more fancy and give it wood and brass handles.

The project is pretty straight forward and quick but it is so satisfying to make things you own and improve objects to your own taste.

    Published on Jul 11, 2017
This video is from the weekend of July 7-9, and it's about the work I need to do in order to prepare the covered shop area for the construction work that will begin soon. I decided to sell off several of the machines I had stored out there and trying to make as much usable shop space as I can for future use. Gill stops by to give me a hand moving the big heavy drill presses, and Joe comes by the next day with his fork lift to help me load the machines onto my trailer. I wanted to get those machines out of the way and I have homes for them as well.

    About -
I produce 2-3 videos every week covering shop tips and tricks, money-saving hacks, inventions, and woodworking projects. Some projects are simple, some are complex, and some are really weird - or just fun. Experimentation and playfulness are important, and woodworking should never feel like a chore.

A lot of my projects are designed to make your workshop more efficient, so I have plans for a lot of woodworking jigs and shop-built tools. I’ve made a lot of drill-powered machines, from a band saw to a lathe to a fully automatic slingshot crossbow to a t-shirt folder. My creations run the gamut from practical must-have shop tools to ridiculously fun family projects and everything in between.

    Geotechnical Report: Spec House EP.03
    Essential Craftsman

    Published on Jul 11, 2017
This part of building a house takes time. Lots of waiting, planning, brainstorming, waiting for engineering, talking to neighbors, gathering rough bids, etc. The importance of all this can not be overstated. Someone is going to have to live with these decisions for a long time so do everything in your power to make sure you are doing things right.

In this episode we have received the soils report back from our geo technical engineer, and discuss our plan to correct the slope and soil issues. Now that we have a plan, we will take this to a structural engineer. This part of our series might feel a little slow - don't worry, it will pick up! Thank you all for watching.

We continue on with the cross-feed nut build. We'll start off at the granite plate and do some measuring and inspecting on the flange end. Then we go back to the lathe to get the center bore drilled out, then I grind up a tool bit to cut the oil grooves.
I didn't have time to finish this one out this week so one more episode on this one.

    1930s Rotary Jigsaw [Restoration]
    Hand Tool Rescue

    Published on Jul 20, 2017
This rotary jigsaw was also known at the Cutawl (Model K8). Based on the age of the motor and the history of patents on this machine, I believe it was made sometime in the 1930s. It had many other cutters available for cutting materials such as metal, wood, leather, fabric, drywall, and essentially anything else that is up to 1.25" thick and softer than hardened steel.

This restoration was a lengthly process as the motor needed work as well. I am stunned this motor eventually ran so well. There is zero play in any direction other than back and forth when I move the armature. For a motor that is ~85 years old, I was very surprised to see the bronze bushings having essentially no wear. It's possible they were replaced at one point.

After doing research on this tool and talking with some collectors and experts, I learned that there were certain parts that were fragile and prone to damage. The large wheel in the back is attached to the main shaft by a pin that does not go through the centre of the shaft, but is offset. This means that over time, the offset pin allowed the wheel to wear around the shaft and starting wobbling itself to the point of bending/breaking the shaft. I chose not to risk it and left the wheel as is.

While looking at a parts diagram of this tool, I decided it was too risky to try and hammer and pry off the rotary mechanism as it's filled with small steel balls and retainer rings. These two things are my enemies. All I do is loose them. The part works completely fine, so there is no reason to mess with it.

I could actually see myself using this tool for some applications. It has a very natural feel to controlling the direction of cut and I feel like I could be more accurate with this than a modern jigsaw.

Hopefully you get a chance to try one of these out one day!

SNS 177: Machining Couplings, Hydraulic Press Tonnage

Big mix of content subjects this week. We show the drill presses being loaded up and leaving for the North, some viewer mail, and some new Starrett tools for work.
One segment is about calculating hydraulic tonnage on the new Dake 75 ton press, and we we do it. I've been getting some interesting results.
For machining this week I have two more Kop-Flex shaft couplings I had to bore, key, and set screw, as well as do some slot milling.

I was recently asked to be a guest on the Welding Tips & Tricks Podcast with Jody Collier, Roy Crumrine, and Jonathan Lewis. This was a great conversation and they asked me about a lot of things including my work history and where I got my training. Be sure to check that out!
