    About -
I produce 2-3 videos every week covering shop tips and tricks, money-saving hacks, inventions, and woodworking projects. Some projects are simple, some are complex, and some are really weird - or just fun. Experimentation and playfulness are important, and woodworking should never feel like a chore.

A lot of my projects are designed to make your workshop more efficient, so I have plans for a lot of woodworking jigs and shop-built tools. I’ve made a lot of drill-powered machines, from a band saw to a lathe to a fully automatic slingshot crossbow to a t-shirt folder. My creations run the gamut from practical must-have shop tools to ridiculously fun family projects and everything in between.

    Shop Talk 19: Parting Tools
    Abom79

    Published on Aug 8, 2017
I'm often asked to talk about parting tools and the different types. This was my attempt at the discussion but I feel like I missed something. Perhaps this is a better subject for me during an actual job at hand.
There are two basic types of parting tool, high speed, and carbide, or carbide insert. Carbide inserts are great for production, and everyday use in the working shop. They have great chip formation and can run at higher speeds. However that can pose problems on smaller or less rigid lathes.
High speed steel would be my first pick, especially for home and hobby use. They can be easily re-sharpened and will last for years. You can have an assortment of blades each with a different grind on the end. They have less tool pressure and can run at low speeds.
One key point to remember, if your having chatter problems, often times reducing the RPM, and feeding in harder it will reduce or eliminate the chatter. Always make sure you have a good sharp tool, or a good insert that isn't burned up, and your tip is on center or just slightly above.
Hopefully my viewers will get something out of the video, and I'll be sure to touch on this subject as it arises later.

Thank you Lincoln for sponsoring this cool project!
    Check them out at www.lincoln.com

This week i decided to build a frame integrated bikelock holder.
I saw a bike with a similar design a couple weeks ago, the brand was called fixie inc. but they left the pipes a little bit proud and i really like the flush integration.

this is incredibly useful and i love how it doesn´t change the flow of the frame at all unlike the bulky plastic holders that come with the bike.

    Machine work starts at https://youtu.be/V6E9VNbdsY8?t=13m50s
This week we have progress on the shop, the new AC has been installed! Maybe in a few more weeks construction will resume on the enclosure.
I have one broken bolt to remove at work I show you, and then I get busy on a small production run of 30 stainless discs for Brad Jacob over at Maple Lane Machine & Tool. His channel is https://www.youtube.com/user/Basement...
Parting off 316 stainless can be challenging especially with tight tolerances. We were trying to get these done without the need of a second facing op.
Next weekend I'll be taking a trip over to some of the nice Florida State Parks and to visit my family. Videos to come of that trip.

    Antique Forge & Anvil [Rescue]
    Hand Tool Rescue

    Published on Aug 25, 2017
I had a tough time choosing between a forge restoration and an anvil restoration. I decided to rescue them both instead!

The forge was made by Thompson MFG. Co out of Grand Bay, New Brunswick, Canada around the 1920s. It is made of solid cast iron with pipe legs. The clinker breaker was missing and I replaced it with one I had on hand, but I cannot seem to find photos of the original breaker design. Usually the clinker breaker is further into the firepot that what the forge seemed to be designed to use. It is also odd that the firepot doesn't really fit the forge very well. The broken piece for the pipe housing was not worth repairing. Both of these pieces just need to be functional.

The anvil was made by Soderfors in Sweden in 1928. I found this anvil with large amounts of torch damage and grinder marks all over it. The hardness of the face was most likely affected by the heat of the torch. Although not shown in the video, the anvil was heated up before it was stick welded. I got a friend to help weld and mill the anvil and that is why there is not too much footage of the anvil being welded. I think it actually came out pretty well, the hardness seems to have stayed about the same, but I am not sure if there is an improvement. The bottom of the anvil was flattened lightly also.

The blower is now packed with grease and filled with oil and seems to be running great. Link to the blower restoration is here: https://youtu.be/adJ2PMVg7Hq

Can't wait to do some blacksmithing! I just need to find some nice hammers, hardie tools, and a vise to help with the blacksmithing setup.

CHEAP Spot Welder DIY (using simple tools)
    Made in Poland

    Published on Aug 25, 2017
Hi. My name is Darek and in this video I'll show you how I made Spot Welder DIY using simple tools.
The main assumption was to make this without special tools.
As you seen, mostly I used a drill and angle grind and the end result came out really cool.

    Costs:

    Transformer from the scrapyard - $ 2.00
    Welding cable 1 meter - $ 2.00
    Connectors - $ 1.00
    Aluminum square tubing - $ 4.00
    Door hinges - $ 2.00
The rest of the materials I had in the workshop, but if I had to buy them, would not cost more than $ 10.00
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- $ 21.00 (my cost $ 11.00)

Welder works really, really well. After a few minutes of work, only the aluminum arms are warm. Thanks to the fact that they are made of aluminum, they quickly give off the heat and the entire transformer and the coils are cold.

How To Ensure Site Optimization. Spec House EP.05
    Essential Craftsman

    Published on Aug 25, 2017
A Topographic Survey is critical in order to optimize your site. If site optimization is not super important you may be able to get by without one. The consequence of proceeding without a Topo is a very likely under or over estimation in materials, export, and (in our case) the engineering on the retaining wall. A Topographic survey allows us know exactly how much dirt is on our site, and where we need to move it.

Many thank for all the support - especially those of who have chosen to support on Patreon.

Go to 9 minute mark for the machine work footage.
This week I have some footage from work. First job is a Heli-coil thread repair job in an aluminum housing, fixing an oil drain plug hole.
Second up is some shaft couplings I machined from 11" solid 1045 steel round stock. These are some custom sized couplings that had to be machined to the sample size. I do some heavy rough turning, taking 1/2" passes using my Iscar tooling designed for heavy stock removal. I'll finish up on the mill with some drilling and tapping.

so here is my newest member of my key-collection
i added the magnet to help me identify steel on the junkyard.

the project is super simple-anybody could make this!
all you need it a rotary tool and a file. if you have a drillpress, i would suggest using that for drilling the holes because it is much more precise than the dremel tool.

    9.5" Inch 4140 Gearbox Shaft Part 1
    Abom79

    Published on Sep 9, 2017
First of a short series of videos about machining a 9 1/2" gearbox shaft. This shaft is very similar to my past Heavy Metal Machining series, so I try and give you guys some different angles, and information I may not have shown before.
In this video we get the ends centered, set up in the Pacemaker and begin roughing the shaft down.
I have some pretty nice 1/2" metal removal cuts getting the ends turned down.

    The Homestead Craftsman

    Published on Mar 28, 2017
I paid $5000 for my first house with the goal of renting it, spent a little money getting it renovated and rented it two times which more than paid for what I have in it. Now I'm getting it ready to sell. This video shows it current condition and talks a little about what I'm going to do to it. I'll post more on the house soonish.

    Essential Craftsman

    Published on Sep 15, 2017
Hiring a structural engineer can save you money in a lot of cases. Don't think of this as an unnecessary or negotiable part of your team. As you know, our site is on a serious slope and there is a lot of retaining happening. Engineering is the process of optimizing the materials and costs of construction to get the job done properly and efficienlty - the first time.

Harvey Engineering did the engineering on this project for us 'payment in-kind'. We hope any of you needing Structural Engineering in Oregon will give them a shot. Scott Harvey does fantastic work, is highly experienced, affordable, and responsive. They are our first sponsor on this project! For additional information visit essential craftsman.com/harvey

FYI I have used Harvey Engineering before this, and I will use him again after. He just gets it. If you are in another state, make sure you find someone highly responsive and who understands what you are trying to accomplish with your project.

The next video you see on this project will have dirt flying all over the place! Thanks for watching and for the nice words and support.
