    G&E Shaper Oil Sump Cleanout
    Abom79

    Published on Jan 31, 2018
The oiling system on this G&E shaper has been long neglected. It's time for a full clean out of the oil and the sump. I happened upon a freebie piston pump that I used to remove the old from the shaper.
No secrets, just nasty hands on work to get the oil out and get the sump cleaned from all of the sludge!

We also have some parts to share for the G&E shaper that a viewer has loaned me, and I talk about more of the oiling system parts that I am going into.

This past week, I was on the road traveling for my job in the Orlando area and had the chance to visit with a viewer who had some items for me including several dividing heads and some various tooling. He also took me by a machine shop that had shut down and was selling everything where I scored some machinery skates and a 5C Indexer. Upon returning home, I found a box with 3D printed patterns for the Exhaust Nozzle for the Vulcan Steam Locomotive at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture as well as a box from Jack Hoying with a couple of 2J collets that I needed. Then on Saturday, I travled to Madison Georgia for the annual Mid West Tool Collectors Association Peach Meet where I picked up a nice Brown and Sharpe piece. All in all, it has been a busy week for scoring new shop items considering I barely had time to set foot in the shop due to traveling for work!

G&E Shaper Ram Way Site Oilers, New Felt & Oil Site
    Abom79

    Published on Feb 7, 2018
I machine another site for one of the ram way oil points, this time with a threaded oil site. This is another temporary unit.
I then install the new felt cord in all of the oil points and reinstall the sites.
The locations are fed oil from an oil pump and the felt cord wicks the oil to a controlled flow for the ram ways. The access oil then falls back down into the machine sump.

    1940s Mini Band Saw [Restoration]
    Hand Tool Rescue

    Published on Feb 8, 2018
This tool restoration was on a 9in tiny bandsaw made by Duro Metal Products Co. most likely around the 1940s.

I was given this saw for free by someone who had no idea about the make or model of it. It took a lot of looking to identify this band saw, but it was Frank Howarth on YouTube that was able to point me in the right direction as he has two of these.

The paint on this was really poorly done, so I am glad I took the time to redo it. The table angle adjuster as well as the blade tracking adjuster were both missing and needed to be fabricated. I used what I had on to make those parts as I do not have a metal lathe or milling machine.

I am thinking that this saw might make a good table top metal cutting bandsaw, so I may get the proper blade for that and reduce the speed it runs at.

I'd like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

New owners and parts manuals come in for the shaper, as well as a coupe more tools for it as well.
I use the new 9/16" square broach and machine the cast crank handle for the G&E shaper.
I had two identical shafts to machine at work so I show you those being turned, milled, and finished up. I'll have more on those next week after the install.

G&E Shaper New Oil and Run In
    Abom79

    Published on Feb 14, 2018
I discuss the oil recommended to run in these machines from G&E, and how to figure out the proper viscosity depending on the SUS specs given.
For my shaper I went with Multi-Purpose Machine Oil 100 purchased from McMaster-Carr. This oil has the proper SUS and viscosity required to allow proper lubrication of the sliding ways and gearing.
So we top off the crankcase and get the shaper fired back up! I'll give you the first looks at the crank and gearing inside during operation. I also do some adjusting on the sight oilers for the ram ways.

I was given a gearbox housing that required some thread repairs done on it. I use the key-locking thread inserts and how to install them. I'll give you a look at the two gearbox shafts from the last episode installed in the box, and all of the other internals including a large new gear with a 20" bore. By request I show the new G&E shaper catalog in a better close-up view, and a couple of viewer gifts that arrived for the shaper.

This started off with my attempt to tram in the table to start making the first chips on the shaper. But I quickly discovered a problem looming in the table. It was locked up and I couldn't adjust it. This is the tear down and inspection of the tilting table, and getting it fixed up. While it was apart I decided it was the right time to give it a good cleaning and polishing too.
