Milwaukee M18 FUEL 18 Volt 15 Gauge Angled Finish Nailer Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Aug 3, 2016
Price the Milwaukee 15ga Nailer on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2acOvSF
Is the Milwaukee M18 fuel 15 gauge nailer, model 2743-20, up to the task, or meant to replace pneumatic nailers on the jobsite? That is the question we plan to answer for you through our testing.

The internal system use by Milwaukee Tool is a ready to fire system with zero ramp up time. Simply place a battery in the tool, turn it on and fire at will, without delay. Keeping with the FUEL designation, not only does this tool have the powerstate brushless motor, Redlithium battery and a redlink intelligence system, it also has a system to protect the tool and the internal components from over heating. This system is more of a timer than a system of heat detection. As you use the tool, it tracks the amount of nails installed over periods of time. This equation keeps the internals from getting warm and damaging them self.

Tormek T8 Water Cooled Sharpening System Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Aug 5, 2016
Price the Tormek T8 on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2agBswi
The Tormek T8 water cooled sharpening system is the ideal tool for sharpening anything from woodworking chisels, kitchen scissors, to your outdoor axe. Keeping your tools sharp can be a difficult tasks with other methods, but using the Tormek T8 water cooled sharpening system can take a heavily damaged, dull, dangerous edge to a razor sharp, polished, and perfect cutting edge in minutes without removing temper. The system is incredibly easy to use and takes just a few minutes to set it up. The system relies on a slow 80 RPM motor to turn a large aluminum oxide wheel and a smaller leather honing wheel. The aluminum oxide wheel on the Tormek T8 rotates in a water bath that picks up water to keep the stone and blade cool and carry away the metal shavings.

When we talk about GreenWorks Commercial tools, many people ask us if these are available at Lowes like the other GreenWorks tools. The new 82 volt GreenWorks Commercial line of power tools and batteries are a completely new tool line. It is also not backwards compatible with their 24V, 40V, or 80V power tools and batteries. This line was meant to power commercial users and give higher quality tools for them to complete tasks. While many of the items look the same, they are each specific to the 82 volt line. This line is found in commercial outlets, like Site One, that used to be John Deere Landscapes. These stores are going to be geared better to maintain the commercial equipment and provide more knowledgeable sales force.

Keep Your Feet Cool with Atlanta Cool ESD Work Shoes by KEEN
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Aug 14, 2016
Price the Keen Atlanta Cool Work Shoes on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2aioZID
Good work shoes for summer are hard to come by. While the Keen Utility Atlanta Cool ESD work shoes might be light duty, they will keep your feet cool and protected from sharp objects. These summer work shoes are cool, but not 100% waterproof even though they are made with leather. The Keen Utility Atlanta Cool work shoes come with an anatomically correct steel, aluminum, & composite toe designs provide a roomier toe box and maximum comfort. We opted for the soft toe, they are still rubber covered and provide more comfort than other boots we have tried over the years.

Most of the Keen Utility boots we enjoy wearing at work are perfect for winter as they are a fairly warm boot. The comfort and protection have been great, but they leave your feet begging for mercy in the summer months. Plus, in the summer, it is nice to slip in and out of shoes while you run in and outside doing small tasks. The Keen Utility Atlanta Cool work shoes are by far my favorite summer light duty work shoes ever. They are more durable and water resistant than they look and they truly are cool.

Commercial outdoor power equipment that is really up to the tasks that need to be done are just starting to creep out on the market. Realistically, runtime is still an issue for most of the companies. Although cost is also an issue, many commercial contractors are willing to pay the extra costs because they can gain production or jobs because of the reduced noise level. Some states, like California are mandating that some users in certain areas only use electric or battery operated tools.

Workshop Vacs 4 Gallon Detachable Blower Wet/Dry Vac - WS0400DE
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Aug 21, 2016
Price the WORKSHOP 4 Gallon Blower Vac on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2aYRg6O
WORKSHOP wet/dry vacs is not new to innovation, in fact, WORKSHOP Brand is owned by Emerson. The idea of a detachable blower incorporated into a wet/dry vacuum is not new as this company has a few models on the market. But, the idea of a small, powerful vac with an equally powerful blower is an idea that we think many will find very attractive. First, many of us use large wet/dry vacs that have larger containers and we really do not need the capacity. They were most likely purchased for the power and rightly so in some cases where they are hooked up to cyclones or used for high demand dust collection. But the rest of us have a larger vacuum that is not used to its capacity and takes up extra space. That is where this nice small vacuum comes into play along with the fact it has a dual purpose just makes it that more inviting to us who have smaller garages or space to store items.

SawStop PCS 3-HP Professional Cabinet Saw Review & Test
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Aug 25, 2016
Price the SawStop PCS 3-HP Cabinet Saw on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2aiqm9T

My SawStop table saw is the heart and soul of my shop. 99.99 percent of the projects that get built in my shop at one time or another will see the table saw. It is important to me to have a finely tuned, well-constructed, and a darn good looking saw in my shop. The PCS is exactly that.

It is a SawStop of course, which means, it has their patented flesh sensing technology. But if you look at the saw itself and take away the SawStop technology, you will see an extremely well-constructed saw that would easily be at the top of the charts. It very well built, the tolerances are extremely tight, and the overall experience with the saw is wonderful.

Battery String Trimmers at the Home Depot - Help Finding the Right One for You!
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Aug 28, 2016
The goal of this string trimmer shootout is to give the consumer an overview of the battery operated units that can be purchased at the Home Depot. From the entry level unit to the professional trimmer, we want to give a review and our opinions on each unit to help guide someone that may not know exactly what they want or need. This shouldn't replace going into the store and putting them in your hands and deciding for yourself as what is right. Hopefully this gets the user set in the right direction!

KentCNC Standard Dust Shoe on a Shark HD3
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Sep 8, 2016
Dust is inevitable with a CNC machine. Speeds and feeds are key in creating chips and not creating dust but regardless these "chips" can sometimes be so small it is like dust. You can stand and babysit your machine with a shop vac and chase your bit around your work surface or you can get a dust shoe that does all the work for you!

In the past we reviewed the dust shoe for the X-Carve CNC by Inventables. Taking the CNC machine up a notch means we need to take up the dust collection abilities. The Standard Dust Shoe from KentCNC takes a 4" flexible dust port for higher CFM dust collection units. I have a CNC Shark HD3 w/ extended bed made by Next Wave Automation. This CNC is significantly more robust than the X-carve. I want to point out that isn't a slam on the X-carve, they are two completely different units that are in two different categories. But that is for another blog post! :)

My CNC Shark HD 3 w/ extended bed has the ability to do much heavier milling/routing at a time. This means there is more dust being created with each movement of the router or spindle (3hp water cooled spindle is installed). With more dust means better dust collection. More dust collection means more CFM. More CFM means a larger dust collector and larger hose.

The Standard Dust Shoe from KentCNC is a great solution for larger machines that make a lot of dust!

Ryobi ONE + 18 volt Cordless Jet Fan Blower

Go from building a project in the garage to clearing the driveway with the 18 volt ONE + battery platform, the Ryobi 18 volt ONE + blower is a perfect blower if you are already invested in the ONE + platform. Take the 18 volt battery out of your drill, saw, or worklight and slap it into the back of the Ryobi Jet Fan Blower and get clearing that dirt and debris. Boasting impressive power while utilizing a lighter 4.0 amp hour battery, the run time will easily handle a medium to large in town lot.

While testing this unit, we had zero issues moving your typical dirt and grass clippings. When we moved into the edging debris, we saw some performance issues. The unit completed the task but at a much slower rate than the competing units.

This unit had the longest blower nozzle of the three units tested. We prefered this as it was easier to control and point at the debris you were wanting to blow in a certain direction.

Both Ryobi blowers have a very ergonomic and comfortable trigger mechanism that was prefered over the Echo model. This unit did not have a "CRUISE CONTROL" to lock the trigger mechanism.

This unit had the intake from the back with a little relief from the side. Occasionally my pant leg would get sucked in and the airflow would be stopped. The unit would have to be stopped, pulled away, and started again. It was a pain to deal with and would be nice for side air intake.
    Ryobi 40 volt Cordless Blower

Stepping up the power a bit, the Ryobi 40 volt cordless blower is impressive. If you are one that is invested in Ryobi's 40 volt outdoor power tool line, this blower is perfect for you. Go from you 40 volt lawn mower to clearing the dirt and debris while maintaining the same battery. Utilizing the on battery fuel gauge, you can easily monitor the battery level when switching tools.

This unit was much more powerful when compared to the 18 volt ONE + Ryobi model. The blower nozzle was a bit shorter than the other Ryobi unit but still longer than the Echo model.

While testing this unit, we had zero issues moving your typical dirt and grass clippings. It didn't have very many issues moving the edging debris either.

Both Ryobi blowers have a very ergonomic and comfortable trigger mechanism that was preferred over the Echo model.

    Echo 58 volt Cordless Blower

With a little lower MPH rating and nearly 50% more CFM, the Echo 58 volt cordless blower with blow your socks right off! With the 58 volt battery, this unit is perfect for the consumer that already is invested in the Echo 58 volt battery platform.

Right off the bat, the unit's weight was considerably heavier than the previous two models. The 58 volt battery is quite large and adds weight to the unit. Something to consider if you are doing property management day in and day out.

This unit has the shortest blower nozzle of the three units we tested. It also has a metal ring on the end to scrape debris on your hard surfaces.

The trigger mechanism on this unit was not at comfortable as the Ryobi models but does include a "CRUISE CONTROL" lever to keep the trigger pressed when using for long periods of time.

The air intake on this unit was on the back as well, causing my pant leg to get stuck from time to time. A side air intake would be preferred by me.

Is a Battery Operated Snowblower Up to Real World Use?
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Sep 11, 2016
Battery operated tools have taken over a market that was filled with corded only options. We now have commercial power battery operated string trimmers and lawn mowers and this year seems to be a push for many to break into the snow thrower or snow blower market. This market is dominated by gas options that provide the torque and RPMs to deal with the unpredictable snow falls that many of us get. Early in the year, our wet snow can be a disaster to deal with and stress even large tractor powered snow blowers. Mid-Winter, the light powder creates a mess as it blows around and drifts. Late year we deal with more ice and piled up snow as we have cleaned the driveway all year long. These challenges are a lot for a small gas powered snow blower to deal with, let alone a battery operated unit.

In August, yes the hottest month of the year, we set out to give you all the information needed to decide if these new battery operated snow blowers were right for you. Because of the season, it was a difficult task, but trust us, we nailed it.

EGO 21" 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Single Stage Snow Blower Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Sep 18, 2016
People often tell us we have the best job in the world when we tell them we test tools. Really, it's more of a goal to inform people about tools and the capabilities. In this case, working to give everyone a reliable and accurate show of performance and runtime of the Ego Power+ 21" 56-Volt Snow Blower in august was a real challenge. Our testing needed to be much more than an unboxing and we defiantly did not want to follow what has been done before by blowing saw dust. Our goal was to show the true capabilities to people who might buy this unit in preparation for snow this winter. We did not want guessing. Our goal was a video that was able to show everyone exactly what to expect from this purchase that most will consider to be large.

First, the features and technology in this snow blower are awesome. This is the first tool from EGO that will run on a single battery or also capable of running off two batteries. EGO calls this technology Peak power and it is software that is capable of detecting the size of the batteries in the snow blower. Obviously, the larger the battery, or batteries, the better it will perform. We found that there is little difference between running the unit with a 7.5Ah single battery or two 5.0Ah batteries, but all of our testing were done with the two 5.0Ah batteries that came in the kit.

The largest benefit from a battery operated snow blower is the lack of pull starting, lack of buying gas, lack of changing oil and a few other issues that can be frustrating. The battery powered unit will run as long as the batteries are charged. It's also simple enough that it leaves little confusion as to how to operate the unit. Along with simplicity, there is a speed controller for the paddle to slow it down in tight or awkward areas.

The intake and area where the snow in brought into the unit and sent to the chute is all 8 gauge powder-coated metal. This is a big change over other battery operated units on the market and a huge selling point for us. Let's be real, a snow blower is really a small battering ram used to chip away at piles of snow left at the end of your driveway. The last thing we want to do is use cold plastic as our hammer to break up ice chunks. The scraper is plastic, but is also a wear item and designed to be replaceable. The rubber on the paddles is also a wear item and easily replaced.

Since this unit is belt driven and it is protected by a computer, there is no need for a shear pin on the paddles. Of you were to run into a newspaper or other item under the snow, the voltage draw from the batteries would spike and the computer would shit the unit down. If the unit did not shut down fast enough, the belt would slip, protecting the snow blower from damage.

EGO 56 Volt 600 CFM Backpack Blower Review - Model LB6000
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Sep 20, 2016
EGO is continuing to grow their blower line with a new 600 cfm backpack blower that is powered with a 5.0Ah battery and available at Home Depot. This backpack blower is priced at $299 including a charger and 5.0Ah 56 volt battery. That is a pretty good deal considering the 5.0Ah battery is included and available for use in other EGO tools.

This backpack blower is no surprise, but it is a new to the industry for battery powered blowers. As the technology and power increases in these blowers, there has to be a way to comfortably use them. The prior 530cfm hand held blower made by EGO can put a strain on your wrist with the power it creates over a long time. This now more powerful backpack blower is much more ergonomic to use and makes more sense for anyone who uses a blower to move leaves or lawn debris from their yard.

The best part about the battery operated blowers is the lack of fuel and starting a gas engine. Ethanol has taken the fun out of small gas engines by creating carburetor trouble. The battery units allow for ease of use and now have power very comparable to gas. As technology increases, runtime will increase removing the gap between gas and battery, giving all advantage to a battery operated blower.

    EGO Backpack Blower Features

Variable speed: 230 CFM to 600 CFM
    Maximum air velocity: 145 MPH
    Up to 120-minute run-time with 5.0AH 56-volt Arc-Lithium Battery on low speed
    Brushless motor
    Weather-resistant construction
    Adjustable tube length
8 times quieter than gas-powered backpack blowers
    Adjustable harness with waist belt
    5 Year Warranty
    Ergonomics

There are two main reasons to purchase a backpack blower. One is power and the second is ergonomics. With the increased power, smaller hand held units become harder to use for longer periods. The backpack allows for this weight to be carried on your back and the force of the blower to be transferred to the backpack. Your arm is left to simply directing the path of the air. This creates a stance that can be comfortable to work in for long periods.

Beyond the stance, the EGO blower is set up so it can be adjusted for people of all sizes. The handle on the blower can easily move forward and back to adjust to height and arm length. The straps on the backpack are padded and able to be adjusted to fit just about anyone. Included in these adjustable straps are a chest and waist strap that help keep the unit straight on your back for long periods of time.

The trigger is a simple on and off model with the variable speed operating with a lever next to the trigger and a turbo button. Our runtimes matched EGO's estimates for Turbo (15 minutes) and high (22 minutes). Our uses did not dictate the use of low, so we cannot attest to the 120 minute estimate. These times allow for a significant amount of work to be accomplished on one charge. With multiple batteries the work could be constant as the charge time is close to the runtime on high.

This is a great blower for any high end consumer!

Ryobi 25cc Gas Jet Fan Blower Review 520 CFM 160 MPH
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Oct 6, 2016
520 CFM - 160 MPH - The Ryobi 2 Cycle Jet Fan Blower is a new innovation for Ryobi that uses some of the same engineering as their battery operated jet fan blowers. The 25cc 2-cycle gas engine and jet fan produce 520 CFM at 160 MPH. To get this amount of air movement, the blower features an innovative 3-stage jet fan design. As with most blowers, you have a variable speed trigger, but you also have cruise control. The Cruise lever allows you to set the engine rpm for the perfect amount of air movement and the machine will run at that setting without you touching the trigger. This also allows this unit to be used for drying outside areas. The Ryobi RY25AXB blower also has an anti-vibe handle with overmolded grips that help the use hang on to the unit without fatigue.

Like many of the other Ryobi gas engines that we have tested, this on also starts easily and has full instructions to start the unit listed on the air filter. With any small engine, Ryobi limits the user to E10 fuel, but we recommend that you purchase the fuel pre-mixed with oil in small cans from the store. The fuel from the store is ethanol free and treated for storage. Long term, there will be less problems with that fuel along with less change of a carburetor issue.

    RY25AXB Features

    520 CFM & 160 MPH
    Variable speed trigger
    Soft grip anti-vibration handle
Jet fan engineered for powerful performance
3 position cruise control for ease of use
    3-year limited warranty
    It's Worth Every Penny

The Ryobi 25cc Jet Fan blower is priced at $129.00, our first thought was what a deal. While battery operated units seem to be taking over this market, this 2-cycle unit is a clean burning engine that is rated at 72 decibels. There is no risk of a battery going dead and leaving you to spend big money on a new battery. As long as you take care to use good fuel, this unit should be trouble free for a long time! With proper maintenance, this unit could last you the rest of your life and the only cost to running it would be the gas and oil.

One of the big items that stands out to me on this gas unit is that there are no hot spots when the unit is running. By hot spots, we mean we could hand this blower over to our kids without any instruction as to where the exhaust is or anything that could burn them. That is a big deal, especially when working with dry leaves. The air intake for the blower is the rear of the machine. Inside that intake is the engine, so all cooling of the motor is done by the air flowing through the blower. Second, the exhaust gases also flow out the blower. This allows a right or left handed person to use the blower without chance of the exhaust blowing on their leg.

While this is not a new innovation, cruise control is not found on every blower and it is nice to see Ryobi put it on this jet fan blower. This unit can be set to run at a specific air output without having to pull the trigger. For long term use, this can be more comfortable. The unit is incredibly balanced, and the trigger is easy to use, but the cruise could help people who want to use the included shoulder strap. The cruise control can also be used to help dry items outside, like your deck or chairs. Since the exhaust runs out the blower, there is little hint, other than noise, that this unit does exhaust dangerous gasses if used indoors.

Overall, there was not a single disappointment to the new Ryobi 25cc Jet fan blower. The power is significant and most home owners will find that this unit has more power than they really need. The blower is quiet and offers features normally found in more expensive blowers. It does carry a 3 year warranty and is available at the Home Depot.
