Happy Valentines to ME. My girlfriends at the bank gave ME 8 lovely dime boxes to play with today- course I had to give them $2K and chocolates. It was a fair trade though as every box had sliversss (plural), all told I gots 2 Mercs and 23 Roos.
Almost as good as sex. HH all, Mark

Went through a box of quarters and dimes. Nothing but I did get a bunch of nicer state quarters to fill holes in the folder.

She wouldn't let me order the halves without a business account number. I hadn't needed to provide one before but circumstances brought that situation about and now no halves. I've no longer got a business account there so until the new account is open with the new business, I'll have to wait on getting halves. :(

Time to find a new hobby then I guess- maybe garage sailing.
More boxes works for ME- when a slump comes I power through them nasty boxes fast as I can to get rid of them. Then usually when I'm bout ready to quit for good I'll hit another vein and the fever comes back. Got an even dozen today, one was even a Merc.

I did a box of quarters today as well for NADDA. I get one from time to time just to see ifn I can make a snag but haven't found a silver quarter for a year now.

Just got a e-mail from my neighbor. She works for a small community bank.

I asked her to see if her bank president would allow me to order a bag of coins that would be unopened. They order straight from th Fed Reserve, but the Pres. nearly always has the 2 little old ladies upfront roll everything before I can have it. Not sure why, I've found some halves, a couple quarters, and a few dimes in the past. Anyhoo, they said they'd order whatever I wanted and the bag(s) would remain sealed. No upcharge for ordering it if I'm willing to wait for their weekly order to arrive.

So, now the question is.......which denomination to get. Sounds like most of you guys are seeing halves and quarters picked over. Thought about getting a $50 bag of pennies for the kids to go through. Might find a few wheats...

Been about 6-8 months since I've done any real prospecting.

    Thoughts?

Mark, you mention above that your coins (dimes) come in a box..

My "supply bank" only offers them by the bag.

I'm guessing yours are rolled and mine are loose. Sound about right?

That would be right. I used to have a bank that would get ME bags- always order 2 as one of them usually stunk. This was a small bank out of town (suburb), when the economy turned they bought a small rolling machine and bags of coin to roll their own- saved them $5/box that Loomis charged, bags were only $3 and double amount whats in a box. That was back when the halfs were flowing, now days when I get bags its off the branch coin counter. I wouldn't hesitate to order bags, just like I said get two or more.
Gots myself another half dozen slivers today- two of which are Mercs. Brings YTD up to 361.
    HH all, Mark

Looking back over this thread 1 week ago I was at 296YTD = I got 65 slivers this week but my stack of empties is high at 51- still better than 1 per.

$2,500 halves = nada. I'm done; and by done, I mean switching to dimes until my teller asks if I want halves, and I say sure, why not. Although I did find a war nickel in my wife's cup holder in the car. You'd have thought I found a gold nugget. Pathetic.

    Prospecting for 100% Paper

So here's an interesting update. I was lamenting my recent skunk streak with my favorite teller. She tells me she got in a brick of brand spankin' new dollar bills if I'd be interested in any. I figured what the heck, I'll take a look. Ended up buying a full strap of Star notes that are selling at $3.50 each and 50 fancy serial numbers that I've been selling for $5.50 each - and yes; those are actual selling prices, not what I'm asking.

I know we're all about PM's, but I thought I'd post this because 1) it shows how treating your tellers right can really pay off (ME, I know you know this!) and 2) I needed SOMETHING to cheer me up!! I'll prospect for profits where I can get them, be it silver or paper.

A few ladders, a RADAR, a couple of repeaters, and a bunch with no repeats (i.e, 8 different numbers in the s/n). It was a really nice batch. It surprises me what people will pay for fancy serial numbers. I knew the no repeats would sell for a couple of bucks each, but never expected to get a couple of bidding wars on them.

Paper trader haha Congrats on the profits. I got another silver dime coming from one of my girls next time I catch her at work- she was on her way out when she told ME she found one- must be my charming disposition haha.
Seems to be a slow week on the dimes so far though I did find an even dozen tonight, yesterday I did way to many boxes for the one sliver I got and might have got 1/2 dozen Thurs. YTD up to 387, with a little luck maybe I can break 400 before Tues (trash day so beginning and end of my weeks).

    Great day for me.
I made a routine visit to the bank. At the last minute I randomly decided to ask the lady if they had any half dollars.
She gave me 6 rolls of half dollars and I handed her $60 cash.
The first roll I find a single 1968 40% half dollar.
The second roll was the best roll out of all of them. I hit jackpot.
    All together I got:
    • 5 proof clad half dollars
    • 7 silver 40% half dollars
    • 3 silver 90% proof half dollars from the 1990's
Been thrilled about this all day. :)

Sorry for the newbie question, but....

How do you know which ones are proofs? (S mintmark)????

It's really obvious. The proofs look completely different. Even after being circulated lightly you can still see the mirror-like finish clear as day, and yes the S mint-mark can be an indicator as well. Also, to me, I think Kennedy looks much different on the proof coins. Perhaps it's just that his details are more defined?

As for the silver proofs, when I look at the edges of the coins they are solid silver color, much different than 40% silver or clad. I don't even think they made any silver Kennedy half dollars in 1993 that weren't from the 90% silver proof set. To do a final verification, I weighed them. Weighing in at 12.5 grams, the 90% silver half dollars weigh a considerable amount more than a clad or 40% Ag coin.

THAT would make any silver bug's day! Congrats.

Got another $1,000 in halves to go through tonight. I haven't opened them yet, but I'll go ahead and report that I was skunked again. No need to delay the inevitable.

Only 1 sliver today but I got a few yesterday including a 1912 Barber (only the 5th found in 6 years). Got stopped short of the 400 mark by 3, I'll get them and more later.

    HH all, Mark

So I counted up empties today- 47 boxes for 36 slivers last week. Hope this weeks better, that don't cover my gas bill for a week- course my gas bill is for work and play but work don't pay my gas these days.

Hate to quote my own post, but the above applies to my February experience as well. Out of 8 half boxes, 5 were SKUNKS, 2 were pretty good, and the 1 other box was my best ever 3 times over.
    :w00t:

    Here's the results for February:
    Boxes: 8
    Skunks: 5
    90%: 2 Walking Liberties, 12 Kens
    40%: 41
    Clad Proof: 1

Persistence and dumb luck paid off. Hope I can continue mining this paystreak and that the knuckleheads that continue to cash in Grandpa's stash keep doing so, as it's in better hands with us that know better. Good luck out there folks.

Grats on the Silva Pyramid, your halve boxes put mine to shame lately and I do 4/wk. Here's my totals for Feb.
    Dimes =211
    40% Halves=7
    War Nicks =4

Not much for alot of trouble but till something better comes along I'll continue. Been pondering what to do this summer- if I'm gonna try gold mining again or not.

I'm jealous of your search volume! At the rate I find silver dimes, I'd have to search 293 boxes to hit your YTD total. I'm at 52 boxes/76 keepers so far this year.

Your average/box is better than mine. I'll know in the morning when I break down the empties for trash day how many boxes I did this last week but I'm doing 40-50 each week. I've had a few 20+ boxes to keep my average up but a $hitload of skunks of late. Got 3 slivers today out of 6 boxes, 1 box had 2 so 4 were skunks (I need a new hobby). Anyways can't win if you don't play right.

TD bank, my only bag source and secondary box source informed me yesterday they can no longer sell bags or boxes to non-business account customers according to corporate decree. Stinks, but now I'll have more free time to get other stuff done I guess. At least until I decide it is worth $8 a month to open a small business account.......

Wow, I just don't have that many banks in my town.

I was at 1.27 per box last year. 1.44 so far this year, but it's been slow lately.

A teller had a 1936 quarter waiting for me at my dump bank today. Pretty much the only bright spot this week! I've only managed 3 roosies and an 80% canuck so far. 2 coin counter dime bags are waiting for me this weekend, hopefully they turn the week around!

Picked up 2 bags of dimes today, a full $500, and a $335. Bag 1 gave up 4 roosies and bag 2 gave up 3. 6 more dimes left to fill up another roll.

Is anybody else thinking of converting 90% to .999? Tempting with the premiums offered.
