ARLINGTON, TEXAS - Three officers and another man were hurt as a bizarre scene unfolded at an Arlington home Monday afternoon.

When Arlington police arrived at the scene of an attempted suicide call at a home on Carla Avenue, they found a man doused in gasoline and threatening suicide. As officers communicated with him, he poured more gasoline on himself and began acting “frantically,” according to Arlington police Sgt. Vanessa Harrison.

The man was holding what was believed to be a lighter in one hand, Harrison said.

An officer deployed a Taser to subdue the man, and both the man and the room inside the home were engulfed in flames.

Harrison said it’s not clear if the Taser ignited the fire.

“We know that a Taser can have some other implications, but we also know that he had something ignitable in his hand,” she said.

The man was taken to the hospital in an unknown condition. Three officers were being treated for smoke inhalation and are expected to be OK.

Officers worked immediately to put out the flames and “attempted to stabilize” the man, Harrison said. One officer pulled the man through a window and out of the burning home.

Three other people were at the home when officers arrived, but all none of them were inside when the fire broke out.

Police have been called to the home before and a warrant was out for the man’s arrest on family violence charges. No other information about the man was immediately available.

Indeed this is a tragedy. In California, we have a [Death With Dignity] Law which allows a physician to prescribe life-ending meds to folks who wish to check out. We rarely, if never have these bizarro situations where a bunch of people are put in harm's way trying to prevent a suicide.

This greatly reduces the number of failed suicide attempts in California. And nobody has to douse themselves with accelerants and light themselves on fire!

Nothing the cops could have done except back off, make themselves gone, and sneak up with a water hose and let him have it.

    Common sense.

He became agitated with the cops in his face.

Have you been eating those psilocybin mushrooms they grow on the Indian Reservations there?

In So Cal, the entire community shuts down when a freeway jumper doesn't proceed

I do like the idea of the Taser setting off the blaze

It's not the spark you see, that's dangerous, it's the ionization spark we can't see and that spark you can't see comes Before the one we can

Time for more training, especially where a household garden hose and flammable liquids are all nearby
    Honorable Request!

IMHO, this IS the stuff our politicians are supposed to be listening to but instead, they're only in their job for what THEY can get from it

That's why we have cops playing with electricity while in a room full of flammable vapors :belly laugh:

Fucking lucky they're all not in pieces

I remember someone (searcher?) posted a video a long time ago about a cop unloading his piece on a man that kept shutting the door to the room he was in. Was only putting himself at risk the whole time. It was recorded by a family member.

I don't think water works well on gasoline.

Maybe shoulda just backed off and got a fire extinguisher.

A sudden blast of a garden hose from 20ft would have doused the situation. He would not be able to light it up. If he had already lit up, it probably would have put it out.

Fire extinguisher would have required a much closer proximity than 20ft, and thus lose the element of surprise.

Either one of our ideas would have worked better than the dumbass cops solution.

I nailed a squirrel in my bird feeder at 20 feet at least. He was drenched in 2 seconds. Good water pressure, good nozzle.
