I had more than a few people laugh when I'd quote a job. They would go find someone else who was cheap. Occasionally they would call me back a few months later asking me to come by and give them a price to fix the crappy cheap work. I would quote them the same price I asked for originally to do it to fix it.
We prided ourselves on the fact that we only worked 9 months a year. Winter is nice down here, and the wind is great for sailing, so who in their right mind want's to work when ya can go sailing and ocean fishing?

    That is a dark song.
The Fab Four must have been coming down off Qualudes when they wrote that.
    For the record.

    Joan was quizzical; studied pataphysical
    Science in the home.
Late nights all alone with a test tube.
    Oh, oh, oh, oh.

    Maxwell Edison, majoring in medicine,
    Calls her on the phone.
"Can I take you out to the pictures,
    Joa, oa, oa, oan?"

But as she's getting ready to go,
A knock comes on the door.

    Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
    Came down upon her head.
    Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead.

Back in school again Maxwell plays the fool again.
    Teacher gets annoyed.
    Wishing to avoid and unpleasant
    Sce, e, e, ene,

She tells Max to stay when the class has gone away,
    So he waits behind
Writing fifty times "I must not be
    So, o, o, o"

But when she turns her back on the boy,
    He creeps up from behind.

    Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
    Came down upon her head.
    Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that she was dead.

    P. C. Thirty-one said, "We caught a dirty one."
    Maxwell stands alone
    Painting testimonial pictures.
    Oh, oh, oh, oh.

Rose and Valerie, screaming from the gallery
    Say he must go free
    (Maxwell must go free)
The judge does not agree and he tells them
    So, o, o, o.

But as the words are leaving his lips,
    A noise comes from behind.

    Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
    Came down upon his head.
    Bang! Bang! Maxwell's silver hammer
Made sure that he was dead.

    Whoa, oh, oh, oh.
    Silver hammer man

    Maxwell the serial killer.

Very professional work there Andi. While the shim and well chosen nail location would have sufficed, you went above and beyond by mashing the sticker back down, nice stuff.

I spent the last 2 days replacing the laminate flooring in my kitchen and bathroom hall. Dog flipped his full water dish over after we had gone to bed a couple weekends ago. I pulled it all up back then and let the under layer dry fully.
Luckily I had 3 1/2 boxes left over from when they put it in.

I hate this stuff. You sneeze on it hard and it buckles in an hour. It will be replaced with that new soft vinyl stuff that looks like wood with heating mesh under it before we move to this house full time. I saw the heating stuff and the flooring at home depot, it's cool as feck!
Get laminate they said, it's great they said. I was dumb.

Daughter called me the other night and said half of Her outlets quit working in Her bedroom and living room. Tested the outlets that weren't working and they had juice to them(not good). Snooped around the outlets on that circuit that did work and found this behind Her headboard.

    outlet.jpeg
Neutral got so hot it cooked itself into a pile of slag. Her wall behind Her bed is tongue and grove fir. Just thankful the place didnt light up.

You could be right, some of those old boxes are pretty tight, really tough to say what was going on. I cut the hot wire on the same side to remove the outlet. And while examining it in my hand, that wire came apart as well. Almost like it was weakened (scored and brittle) from stripping the insulation?

I've found, in some cases, that a loose connection where a wire is fastened to a screw or even a wire nut that didn't get tightened right, it will cause an over heating issue with the connection and do things like that as well as what Andi said. Good thing you found it when you did. Issues like that are an electricians worst insurance nightmare.

Looks almost like my workbench top, only I got cheap and bought mine all glued up and ready for me to assemble.

Be advise Smooth, if you build it - it will get all cluttered up and you'll still be using the floor or sawhorses.

Oh for sure! I built a nice bench years ago that also serves as an out feed table for my saw. Being very limited on space it had to serve both purposes and it was still where everything collected. This bench will be bigger, about 38" x 6' so it should take twice as long to clear off when I need to use it. I've been so blasted busy since I moved here I haven't really had time to build shop cabinets or anything. Surface space has been a valued commodity.

That vise is a very long story. Lets just say in a round about way it cost me about $15,000. The wood stove I found on Craigslist for $200 0r $250, I cant remember, still need to buy the pipe and such. Hopefully that happens this summer. A little tip by the way, search Craigslist for free firewood after large storms. smooth carved out almost two cords of free wood already laying on the ground this year. most of it already limbed.
