The IRA's Secret History (Full Documentary)
    ajvaughan3 Documentary Films

    Published on Aug 4, 2015
The Irish Republican Army (IRA) is any of several armed movements in Ireland in the 20th and 21st centuries dedicated to Irish republicanism, the belief that all of Ireland should be an independent republic.

The first known use of the term "Irish Republican Army" occurred in the Fenian raids on Canada in the 1860s.[1] The original Irish Republican Army formed by 1917 from those Irish Volunteers who refused to enlist in the British Army during World War I. It was the army of the Irish Republic, declared by Dáil Éireann in 1919. Most Irish people dispute the claims of more recently created organizations that insist that they are the only legitimate descendants of the original IRA, often referred to as the "Old IRA".

The playwright and former IRA member Brendan Behan once said that the first issue on any IRA agenda was "the split". For the IRA, that has constantly been the case. The first split came after the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921, with supporters of the Treaty forming the nucleus of the National Army of the newly created Irish Free State, while the anti-treaty forces continued to use the name Irish Republican Army. After the end of the Irish Civil War, the IRA was around in one form or another for forty years, when it split into the Official IRA and the Provisional IRA in 1969. The latter then had its own breakaways, namely the Real IRA and the Continuity IRA, each claiming to be the true successor of the Army of the Irish Republic.

    The Real IRA
    Long Kesh

    Published on Jan 23, 2013
Spotlight: The Real IRA 2003 BBC`
The Real Irish Republican Army, otherwise known as the Real IRA (RIRA), is an Irish republican paramilitary organisation which aims to bring about a united Ireland. It formed in 1997 following a split in the Provisional IRA, which had declared a ceasefire that year. Like the Provisional IRA before it, the RIRA sees itself as the only rightful successor to the original Irish Republican Army and styles itself as simply "the Irish Republican Army" in English or Óglaigh na hÉireann (Volunteers of Ireland) in Irish. It is an illegal organisation in Ireland and designated as a terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Since its formation, the RIRA has waged a campaign in Northern Ireland against the British Army and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), formerly the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). The RIRA is the biggest and most active of the "dissident republican" paramilitaries operating against the British security forces. It has targeted the security forces in gun attacks and bombings, as well as with grenades, mortars and rockets. The organisation has also been responsible for a number of bombings in Northern Ireland and England with the goal of causing economic harm and/or disruption. The most notable of these was 15 August 1998 Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people. After the bombing, the RIRA went on ceasefire, but began operations again in 2000. On 7 March 2009 RIRA members claimed responsibility for an attack on Massereene Barracks that killed two British soldiers, the first to be killed in Northern Ireland since 1997.

Since at least 2010 members of the RIRA have been accused of extortion against businesses and drug dealers, particularly in Dublin. The ensuing feud with criminals resulted in several deaths, including that of the Dublin RIRA leader Alan Ryan. An internal feud in the same time period has also resulted in deaths and maimings.

On 26 July 2012, it was reported that Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD) and other independent republican paramilitary groups were merging with the Real IRA. As before, the group continues to refer to itself as "the Irish Republican Army".

Royal British Special Forces - British SAS Documentary - HD Documentary

The Special Air Service (SAS) is an unit of the British Army established in 1941 as a program, and also later on reconstituted as a corps in 1950. This special forces unit takes on a variety of parts including concealed reconnaissance, counter-terrorism, direct activity, and also human knowledge gathering.

The corps presently consists of 22 Special Air Service Regiment, the normal component, under the operational command of United Kingdom Special Forces, as well as 21 (Musicians) Unique Air Service Program and also 23 Unique Air Service Regiment, which are reserve units under the operational command of 1st Knowledge, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade.

The Unique Air Service traces its origins to 1941 as well as the 2nd War of the nations, as well as was changed as part of the Territorial Military in 1947, called the 21st Unique Air Service Regiment (Artists Rifles). 22 Unique Air Service Routine, part of the regular army, later gained fame and also recognition worldwide after efficiently assaulting the Iranian Embassy in London and also saving hostages throughout the 1980 Iranian Consular office siege, raising the program from obscurity outside the military facility.

The Unique Air Service was an unit of the British Army during the 2nd World Battle, developed in July 1941 by David Stirling as well as initially called "L" Detachment, Unique Air Solution Brigade-- the "L" designation and also Air Solution name being a tie-in to a British disinformation campaign, trying to trick the Axis right into believing there was a paratrooper regiment with various devices running in the area (the real SAS would 'confirm' to the Center that the phony one existed). Due to German resistance and adverse weather condition conditions, the goal was a disaster: 22 men, a 3rd of the device, were gotten rid of or recorded. In September 1942 it was renamed First SAS, consisting at that time of four British squadrons, one Free French, one Greek, and the Folboat Section.
SAS patrol in North Africa throughout WW2.

In January 1943, Stirling was recorded in Tunisia as well as Paddy Mayne replaced him as leader. In April 1943, the First SAS was reorganised into the Unique Raiding Squadron under Mayne's command and the Special Watercraft Squadron was positioned under the command of George Jellicoe. The Special Raiding Squadron fought in Sicily as well as Italy along with the Second SAS, which had actually been formed in North Africa in 1943 partly by the renaming of the Small Scale Raiding Force. The Unique Boat Squadron fought in the Aegean Islands as well as Dodecanese until completion of the war. In 1944 the SAS Brigade was formed from the British 1st as well as 2nd SAS, the French 3rd and Fourth SAS as well as the Belgian 5th SAS. It was charged with parachute uses behind the German lines in France and accomplished procedures assisting the Allied breakthrough via Belgium, the Netherlands (Use Pegasus), as well as eventually into Germany (Operation Archway). As a result of Hitler's releasing of the Commando Order 18 October 1942, the participants of the system faced the added threat that they would certainly be immediately executed if ever caught by the Germans. In July 1944, following Operation Bulbasket, 34 caught SAS commandos were summarily implemented by the Germans. In October 1944, in the results of Operation Loyton 31 caught SAS commandos were summarily carried out by the Germans.

The Unique Air Service (SAS) is an unit of the British Military started in 1941 as a program, as well as later reconstituted as a corps in 1950. The Unique Air Solution was a device of the British Army during the 2nd Globe Battle, formed in July 1941 by David Stirling and also initially called "L" Detachment, Unique Air Solution Brigade-- the "L" designation and also Air Solution name being a tie-in to a British disinformation project, trying to deceive the Center into believing there was a paratrooper program with many systems operating in the area (the real SAS would 'confirm' to the Axis that the fake one alreadied existing). In April 1943, the 1st SAS was reorganised into the Special Raiding Squadron under Mayne's command and the Unique Watercraft Squadron was positioned under the command of George Jellicoe. The Special Raiding Squadron fought in Sicily and also Italy along with the Second SAS, which had actually been developed in North Africa in 1943 in component by the renaming of the Little Scale Raiding Force.

Biography Joseph Stalin Red Terror Documentary
    History Of Wars

    Published on Sep 23, 2016
He held absolute power over the Soviet Union for 29 years. Stalin succeeded his hero Lenin in 1924. From then on, he induced widespread famines to enforce farm collectives and eliminated perceived enemies through massive purges. In 1953, as Joseph Stalin lay dying, doctors were afraid to even examine him. This harsh leader of the Soviet Union was known to turn on even his closest advisors, sending them to prison to be tried as enemies of the state. Stalin came to power by joining a group of revolutionaries that in 1917 overthrew the Russian Czar, or emperor. They created a Communist government, in which the state controlled all parts of peoples lives. The first leader of the Soviet Union, as it was now called, was Vladimir Lenin. Stalin became one of his aides. When Lenin died in 1924, Stalin took control and ruled the Soviet Union with an iron hand for almost thirty years. In the end an unbelievable twenty million people died from starvation or executions under Stalins rule.

A Seabee is a member of the United States Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (CB). The word "Seabee" comes from initials "CB". The Seabees have a history of building bases, bulldozing and paving thousands of miles of roadway and airstrips, and accomplishing a myriad of other construction projects in a wide variety of military theaters dating back to World War II...

    History
    World War II

In December 1941, with U.S. involvement in war soon expected on both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, Rear Admiral Ben Moreell, Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Yards and Docks, recommended establishing Naval Construction Battalions at a newly constructed base at Davisville, Rhode Island (part of North Kingstown). With the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' entry into the war, he was given the go-ahead. The Davisville Advanced Base Depot became operational in June 1942. Camp Thomas, a personnel-receiving station on the base, was established in October of that year. It eventually contained 500 Quonset huts for personnel. On August 11, 1942, the Naval Construction Training Center, known as Camp Endicott, was commissioned at Davisville. The Camp trained over 100,000 Seabees during the Second World War.

In California in May 1942, a base for supporting the Naval Construction Force was established at Port Hueneme in Ventura County. This base became responsible for shipping massive amounts of equipment and material to the efforts in the Pacific.

The earliest Seabees were recruited from the civilian construction trades and were placed under the leadership of the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps. Because of the emphasis on experience and skill rather than physical standards, the average age of Seabees during WWII was 37.

More than 325,000 men served with the Seabees in World War II, fighting and building on six continents and more than 300 islands. In the Pacific, where most of the construction work was needed, the Seabees landed soon after the Marines and built major airstrips, bridges, roads, gasoline storage tanks, and Quonset huts for warehouses, hospitals, and housing. They often operated under fire and frequently were forced to take part in the fighting to defend themselves and their construction projects. In the Pacific Theater they built 111 major airstrips and 441 piers, tanks for the storage of 100 m gallons of fuel, housing for 1.5 million men and hospitals for 70,000 patients.

The Seabees were officially organized in the Naval Reserve on December 31, 1947.

With the general demobilization following the war, the Naval Construction Battalions (NCBs) were reduced to 3,300 men on active duty by 1950. Between 1949 and 1953, Naval Construction Battalions were organized into two types of units: Amphibious Construction Battalions (ACBs) and Mobile Construction Battalions (MCBs), which were later designated Naval Mobile Construction Battalions (NMCBs) in the early- to mid-1960s to eliminate confusion with Marine Corps Base (MCB) in Vietnam...

    Battle Stations The Destroyer Documentary
    History Of Wars

    Published on Sep 29, 2016
In the aftermath Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy designed and built an entirely new generation of warships. Incredibly, they did not have to wait for the next conflict to see duty--in fact, they played a vital role throughout most of World War II.

It's creed was 'to go in harms's way,' its motto....kill or be killed. On June 4, 1942, as the Imperial Navy suffered its first major defeat at Midway, the first Fletcher class destroyer was commissioned in Boston. By the end of the war, there were well over 100 of these revolutionary warships in the water, performing every imaginable task, from protecting carriers to bombarding enemy troops on land.

U.S. NAVY EIGHTH FLEET IN WORLD WAR II PRELUDE TO VICTORY 32134
    PeriscopeFilm

    Published on Sep 29, 2016
The United States Navy presents “Prelude to Victory — A Pictorial Record of the United States Eighth Fleet, Its Officers and Men.” The circa 1943 black-and-white picture was photographed by crews from the Navy, US Coast Guard, and US Army, and an opening title guard explains how the United Nations had agreed to a plan during World War II to first defeat Axis powers in Europe “and then crushing Imperial Japan.” The viewer watches scenes of factory workers assembling shells, guns, bombers, jeeps, planes, and tanks needed for the war effort. Each soldier requires six tons of supplies. Mark 02:45 introduces Rear Admiral Henry Kent Hewitt, commander of amphibious operations in north Africa and southern Europe through World War II, as a convoy leaves American shores headed for Africa and planes launch from carrier escorts. The assault convoy reaches Africa at mark 07:00 and heads for shores such as Casablanca and Algiers before focusing on German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown at mark 10:10 during his visit to the area in November 1942 — marking the first time that a Commander-in-Chief has been on a foreign field of battle — where he met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. (The meeting, known as the Casablanca Conference, was held at the Anfa Hotel in Casablanca in January 1943 to plan the Allied European strategy for the next phase of World War II.)

The film continues with its combat footage and news at mark 11:45 that the Allies had driven Rommel out of Northern Africa. The invasion of Sicily is next, as General Dwight D. Eisenhower is shown conferring with top brass starting at mark 12:05, and Hewitt is shown conferring with General George S. Patton at mark 13:20, as we are told the newly created Eighth Fleet prepares to go into battle for the first time. Ashore at mark 17:38, Patton and British Field Bernard Marshal meet to discuss strategy including a tank assault on Messina, and later an attack on Salerno. A viewer also has a moment to pause on reflect on the tragedy of war, as at mark 22:58 the cameras capture the many wounded servicemen —15,000 in 20 days — and German prisoners of war for whom the war is now over. Although the Navy suffered its losses, the film continues with its purpose of touting Allied superiority, as the Eighth Fleet embarks at mark 30:30 toward France and the French Riviera for one more attack.

The United States Eighth Fleet was a fleet of the United States Navy established 15 March 1943 from Northwest African Force. It operated in the Mediterranean Sea during World War II with a main mission of amphibious warfare, and then was active in 1946–47 as the heavy striking arm of the United States Atlantic Fleet.

In 1941, the forces that eventually evolved into the Eighth Fleet were designated Amphibious Forces, Atlantic Fleet, under the command of Admiral Henry Kent Hewitt, who took command in April 1942. This force, also called Task Force 34, became the U.S. component of the Operation Torch landings in November 1942. The force was then renamed U.S. Naval Forces, Northwest Africa Waters or COMNAVNAW. On 1 February 1946, U.S. Naval Forces, Northwest African Waters, was redesignated U.S. Naval Forces, Mediterranean, which later became the United States Sixth Fleet.

Still under Hewitt's command, the renamed Eighth Fleet supported the landings in Sicily, Operation Husky, and at Salerno, Operation Avalanche, the first sustained land assault and invasion of the European mainland in World War II. Eighth Fleet then supported the August 1944 landing of Allied troops on the coast of southern France, Operation Dragoon, with heavy naval gunfire and naval air attacks. Hewitt remained as the fleet commander until 1945, when he moved on to chair a Pearl Harbor investigation. The fleet was disbanded on 15 September 1945, with its forces becoming part of United States Twelfth Fleet.

With the reorganization of the Navy after World War II in December 1945, Eighth Fleet was reactivated on 1 March 1946 under the command of Admiral Marc A. Mitscher. Under the overall command of Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Eighth Fleet was the heavy striking arm of the Atlantic Fleet. It consisted of the preponderance of Atlantic Fleet aircraft carrier assets, initially including the new fast carriers Midway and Franklin D. Roosevelt, their escorts and support ships. These latter did not include the fast Battleship Division (Battleship Division Two?) made up of USS Wisconsin and Missouri, retained under direct command of Atlantic Fleet. In January 1947, the US Eighth Fleet was redesignated as the Second Task Fleet, a part of the Atlantic Fleet.

ADOLF HITLER & HIS HENCHMEN CONFESS WWII BRITISH PROPAGANDA FILM 27444
    PeriscopeFilm

    Published on Sep 29, 2016
One of the Ministry of Information's "Into Battle" shorts, "These are the Men" was written by Dylan Thomas. This incredible film uses footage from Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will" and other speeches by Hitler and other Nazi leaders, and replaces normal translations with bombastic, over-the-top confessions. Various leaders including Hitler, Goebbels, Göering, Streicher and Hess bare their terrible sins and character flaws as frankly as if they were victims of one a 'confession drug'. These candid autobiographical accounts of evil motives and actions, are damning indeed.

This film is almost unique in British Second World War film propaganda. Whereas many other films from this era stress the importance of those qualities of British life that would be destroyed if the Germans invaded, this film attacks the evils that the Nazis represented. The result is a powerful denunciation of the Nazi leadership.

The film was presented by the Ministry of Information ; devised and compiled by Alan Osbiston and Dylan Thomas, and produced by Donald Taylor.

U.S. NAVY MOTHBALL FLEET / RESERVE FLEET 28654
    PeriscopeFilm

    Published on Sep 30, 2016
"Mr. Push-a-Button", a U.S. Navy film about the education and responsibilities of a Naval officer, starts with images of the U.S. Navy's mothball or reserve fleet, as a Navy officer receives new orders transferring him from reserve duties to the fleet and in particular, managing one of the U.S. Navy's new surface-to-air guided missile systems aboard the cruiser USS Canberra CA-70. The title of the film comes from the fear that the officer in the film expresses that "men are being replaced by machines" and that automation will replace men in the Navy. He realizes over the course of the film (and during an odd dream sequence seen at 15:20) that nothing can replace the human element when it comes to managing shipboard systems. The film is primarily about managing crewmen aboard ship, and the complex role of an officer thrust into a new position with which he has little experience. At 22:43, a full scale alert drill is undertaken aboard ship.

The weapon system seen in the film appears to be the Terrier, The Convair RIM-2 Terrier was a two-stage medium-range naval surface-to-air missile (SAM), and was among the earliest surface-to-air missiles to equip United States Navy ships. It underwent significant upgrades while in service, starting with a beam-riding system with 10 nautical miles (19 km) range at a speed of Mach 1.8, and ending as a semi-active radar homing system with a range of 40 nautical miles (74 km) at speeds as high as Mach 3. It was replaced in service by the RIM-67 Standard ER (SM-1ER).

Features images of USS Hartley DE-1029, USS Warrington DD-843, USS Joseph P. Kennedy DD-850, and USS Intrepid CV-11 appears at the 21:00 mark.

The film was produced by Lieutenant Commander Edward Wayne "Brad" Bradford, who also made "A Day in the Life of the President" featuring John F. Kennedy.

USS Canberra (CA-70/CAG-2) was a Baltimore-class cruiser and later a Boston-class guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy. Originally to be named USS Pittsburgh, the ship was renamed before launch to honor the loss of the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra during the Battle of Savo Island. USS Canberra is the only USN warship named for a foreign warship or a foreign capital city.

The ship entered service in 1943, and served in the Pacific theater of World War II until she was torpedoed during the Aerial Battle of Taiwan-Okinawa and forced to return to the United States for repairs. Placed in reserve after the war, Canberra was selected for conversion into the second guided-missile carrying warship in the USN fleet. Following the conversion, she was host to the ceremony for selecting the Unknown Soldier representing World War II in 1958, undertook an eight-month round-the-world cruise in 1960, participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis naval blockade in 1962, and was deployed to the Vietnam War on five occasions between 1965 and 1969.

Canberra was decommissioned in 1970, struck in 1978, and broken up in 1980. One of her propellers is preserved at the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, while the ship's bell was donated to the Australian National Maritime Museum in 2001.
