    Merseyside: Liverpool’s River - 1941 Educational Documentary - WDTVLIVE42
    wdtvlive42 - Archive Footage

    Published on Oct 22, 2016
'Near Buxton, in beautiful surroundings, rises a little stream, the Goyt. On its way to the sea the Goyt is joined by other rivers to become the great Mersey, one of the main arteries of Great Britain's industry. At Stockport, the river loses its rural beauty and becomes a commercial waterway, spanned at Runcorn by the largest Transporter bridge in the world.
Further down, the Manchester Ship Canal joins the now mighty river. So on to where stand Birkenhead and Liverpool, two of England's greatest ports, linked together by the great engineering achievement, the Mersey Tunnel. In these two towns, mile upon mile of docks confront the eye, as befits the gateways of the New World.'

1939 SKY PATROL - John Trent as Tailspin Tommy - Full movie
    captainbijou.com

    Published on Oct 22, 2016
Starring John Trent, Marjorie Reynolds, Milburn Stone, Jackie Coogan, Dickie Jones, Jason Robards Sr., John Daheim and LeRoy Mason. Directed by Howard Bretherton.

In the third of four Tailspin Tommy films, the daring aviator (John Trent) and his pal, Skeeter (Milburn Stone) take to the sky to rescue a fellow pilot, who has been imprisoned board a tramp steamer, by a gang of smugglers.

Former TWA pilot, John Trent (real name LaVerne Browne), was noticed by a Paramount executive, who happened to be a passenger on one of Trent's DC-2 flights, and Trent was offered a screen test. Trent did the screen test, was put on contract, and given the screen name "John Trent." He made one stipulation he made with TWA before signing with Paramount...that the airline company would put him on reserve in case things didn't work out. They agreed.

After years of supporting roles, Trent landed the role of "Tailspin Tommy Tompkins," in four films for Monogram Pictures based on Hal Forrest's popular aviation-themed comic strip.

After appearing in a supporing role in Paramount's I WANTED WINGS, Trent resumed his aviation career -- under his real name -- as a test pilot and as a flight manager in the flight-test division of Douglas Aircraft in the Southern California area.

He died on May 12, 1966, of cancer in a Torrance, California hospital.

    The Best Film Archives

    Published on Oct 30, 2016

This film is a documentary created by the U.S. Office of War Information in 1942 about the beginning of World War 2. It tries to answer the question “How and why did the Second World War start”. The documentary presents step-by-step the events which led up to Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941) and total war. It shows the German annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia, the invasion of Poland and the tragic fall of France. While Hitler’s army races through Western Europe until only England stands, the Japanese advance deep into China. The Germans turn eastward and open the Eastern Front with the Soviet Union. America prepares for war. The film also discuss some little known historical events, like the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (1931), Italy's invasion of Ethiopia (1935–1936), the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the American Nazi organization rally at Madison Square Garden, NYC (1939), etc.

    Rhodesian Special Air Service documentary
    JohnSmithTheSecond

    Published on Jun 20, 2015
A very rare documentary about the Rhodesian Special Air Service.

The formation of the Rhodesian SAS goes back to November 1959 when it was decided in the Federal Assembly to form a Parachute Evaluation Detachment to examine the practicalities of military parachuting and parachute training in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, with a view to the possible formation of an airborne unit. This was announced by the then Federal Minister of Defence John Moore Caldicott, but it was Sir Roy Welensky who was the reported driving force behind the reforming of what was to become the SAS.

In 1960 a detachment of RAF arrived under Squadron Leader E. Minter to conduct the training of the Parachute Evaluation Detachment (PED). By March 1960, the PED was complete and those on the course were presented their wings by the said Minister of Defence. The "experiment" was a complete success and in July decided to form a regular European Special Air Services Squadron. In late 1960, No 1 Training Unit was formed, and once assembled and trained they would form the nucleus of what was to become: 1 Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI) and "C" Squadron SAS.

In early 1961 six volunteers from the Air Force were sent to RAF Abingdon in England for parachute instructor training and a further group of volunteer officers and NCO's to complete a selection course with the SAS in Britain. On their return they called for volunteers from No. 1 Training Unit and in August 1961 the first of many selection courses was run in the Matopos just outside Bulawayo. No 1 basic training course completed their training in November and were presented their wings by Sir Malcolm Barrow, CBE, MP and then Deputy Prime Minister.

In late 1961 the SAS were moved to Tug Argan Barracks (named after the Battle of Tug Argan, fought 10–15 August 1940), Ndola in Northern Rhodesia along with the Selous Scouts Armoured Car Regiment. By July the following year, No 9 basic course received their wings from the Federal Prime Minister himself, Sir Roy Welensky, KCMG, MP. In August 1962, the Unit had sufficient men to become operational and became known as "C" Squadron (Rhodesian) Special Air Service.

With the breakup of the Federation at the end of 1963, the Squadron was virtually destroyed by many taking the "golden handshake" and some remaining in Northern Rhodesia which included all the officers and the OC at that time. Only 38 NCO's and men remained to serve in Southern Rhodesia. The Unit was relocated to Cranborne Barracks in Salisbury. The initial years after the break-up found the unit having difficulty in attracting recruits. This was largely due to the high standards required of an SAS soldier and also due to the "ill feeling" between the SAS and the RLI (from where most of the recruits should have been selected).

Nevertheless, both the SAS and the RLI played crucial roles in the domestic counter-insurgency effort during the Rhodesian Bush War. The SAS and the Selous Scouts, were the principal special forces units used in external operations. In terms of some of the most important of the external operations, the SAS and RLI both participated in Operation Dingo in November 1977, which was one of the most successful operations conducted during the war.

The numbers of men in the SAS went up to approximately 250 when in June 1978 "C" Squadron (Rhodesian) Special Air Service became 1 (Rhodesian) Special Air Service Regiment.[2] The unit moved to their new barracks called Kabrit in 1979 and continued to serve with outstanding success and distinction[citation needed] until it was disbanded with the transition to black majority rule on 31 December 1980 as Rhodesia became Zimbabwe. "D" Squadron was the "cover" name given to the South African Special Forces, Alpha Group from 1 Reconnaissance Commando (1 RC) & Bravo Group from 5 RC who worked alongside "C" Squadron SAS in the South-East corner of Rhodesia and Gaza Province,of Mozambique both separately and jointly from late 1977 – June 1978. SA personnel were also deployed with Rhodesian SAS on Op Splinter on Lake kariba, in 1978.

The Dark Tower (1943) [Thriller] [Crime] [Drama]
    Timeless Classic Movies

    Published on Nov 19, 2016
Stephen Torg (Lom) seeks work at a struggling traveling circus. While there, a lion escapes; Torg is able to control it with his skill at hypnotism. Phil Danton (Lyon), the head of the circus, is so impressed, he hires the newcomer. Then someone comes up with an idea. Torg hypnotizes Mary (Crawford) so that she can perform a dangerous aerial stunt without props. Her partner and boyfriend, Tom Danton (Farrar) is suspicious, but is overruled by the others.

With Torg's help, the circus becomes very successful, and Torg is able to force Phil into making him a partner. Meanwhile, Torg falls in love with Mary, though she makes it clear to him that her heart belongs to Tom. As time goes on, Torg begins to exert control over Mary. Before one performance, he tells her under hypnosis that she will be so tired that she will be unable to hold onto Tom during their trapeze act. As a result, Tom falls and is injured so badly, he has to stay in the hospital. The others suspect what is going on, but have no proof and are powerless to do anything.

When Tom recovers enough to return to the circus, he finds that Torg has Mary performing an even more dangerous stunt. While watching it, he unthinkingly cries out her name, breaking her trance and almost causing her fall from the high wire. While Torg is being lowered to the ground, Phil cuts the rope and Torg falls to his death. However, in a twist, the doctor reveals that Torg was shot in the head in mid-air, a feat that could only have been done by the circus's sharpshooter, Dora (Josephine Wilson).

Directed by John Harlow, produced by Max Milder, written by Reginald Purdell and Brock Williams, based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Alexander Woollcott, starring Ben Lyon, Herbert Lom, Anne Crawford and David Farrar.

'When Alaska was acquired by Secretary of State Seward almost a century ago for seven million dollars, it was promptly dubbed "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox." Even up to the present day, many Americans consider their newest sister state as a barren rock covered with crushing ice and constantly at sub-zero temperature. Alaska is a rugged land to be sure, but, as this week's THE BIG PICTURE points out, she will prove a valuable star in our nation's flag. An area one-fifth the size of the continental United States, it boasts of modern cities, progressive schools, rich mineral and game resources and booming industries that have already returned our original purchasing price many times over. THE BIG PICTURE highlights Alaska's colorful early years of the Klondike Gold Rush, through its repulsion of a Japanese invasion during World War II, up to its admittance to statehood. The film presentation then defines Alaska's strategic value in military affairs which in recent years has grown to vital importance to national defense. With its original owner, Russia, just fifty-six miles from Alaska's border, it can truly be called the "Guardian of our Northern Frontier" and America's "Outpost State."'

    "The Big Picture" episode TV-422

Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

    The 1950s: USARAL

The Army established the Yukon Command at Ladd Air Force Base as a component of the U.S. Army Alaska (USARAL) with the mission of point defense of U.S. military installations north of the Alaska Range. Consequently, infantry and anti-aircraft units comprised most of the Army presence at Ladd AFB during the 1950s. Elements of the 4th Regimental Combat Team arrived at Ladd AFB in 1950, and the 1st Battle Group, 9th "Manchu" Infantry Regiment took its place in 1956. At some time by December, 1957, the 1st Battle Group, 9th "Manchu" Infantry was split between Ladd AFB and Eilson AFB, with the headquarters being at Eilson AFB and some of the line companies (C Company, for one) remaining at Ladd AFB. That configuration remained until at least December, 1959. The 4th AAA Group was stationed at Ladd until 1958. In 1959, a NIKE battalion equipped with nuclear-capable Nike Hercules surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) took over the interior defense mission...

Alaska is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east is the Canadian Yukon Territory and the province of British Columbia, the Arctic Ocean to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, with Russia (specifically, Siberia) further west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 4th least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's 731,449 residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance...

Although it had been occupied for thousands of years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation. The United States purchased Alaska from Russia on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million ($121 million adjusted for inflation) at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km²). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959...
