YARDMAX 26″ Two Stage Snow Blower Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Nov 18, 2016
Price the Yardmax YB6770 Two-Stage Snow Blower on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2eBFAeM
Self-Propelled & Balanced - If you are looking for a well built, great priced two stage snow blower that has a lot of features, the Yardmax 26" snow blower is one to put on your list of "must see" items. The absolute first thing we noticed about the Yardmax snow blower was the weigh distribution and comfort in the handle height. The balance and ergonomics of this machine feel a lot better than other snow blowers in the same category. After use, the features seemed to real us in a bit more. The heated hand grips help out a lot for the smaller jobs where you might not have gloves on!

The seven horsepower LCT engine has electric start that is powered from an extension cord. There is no on-board battery to maintain or replace over time. The electric starter is backed up with a recoil start. The dashboard is simple to use and gear changes can be done on the fly. If you are out early or late, there is an LED light that helps to guide you on the mission to clean off your driveway.

We do not have snow, so we went to our local ice arena again to give this snow blower a test. Our YouTube video is a must see!
Build Quality - Compared to other models we scoped out in the same price range, the Yardmax has thicker steel on the intake. This is a good start for showing the Yardmax crew cares about their brand and reputation. The gear case is aluminum to save weight, but contains steel gears for durability. Other items to note are greasable joints, serrated steel augers and good tires.

    Features

LCT Electric Start 7.0 HP 208cc snow engine.
Self-propelled drive with multiple speeds — 6 forward and 2 reverse.
Serrated steel augers to slice through hard-packed snow and ice.
Axe-shaped housing sides chop through tough snow and ice.
Heavy-duty aluminum gear case with alloy steel gears and synthetic gear oil.
Push-button electric start with recoil backup for simple ignition.
Dashboard with headlight, easy-to-reach speed control and cup holder.
    Heated hand grips.
Pin-lock axle comes standard, offering 2-wheel drive for traction and 1-wheel drive for maneuverability.
    Warranty: 2-Year Residential; 90-Day Commercial

Who is Yardmax? - First, here is what Yardmax states on their website: YARDMAX outdoor power equipment delivers the perfect combination of practicality and performance, offering durable and affordable product lines engineered to consistently get the job done right, at the right price.

Yardmax is a fairly new company looking to provide a quality product to end users. They are working to get into the market by providing a price point that is less than other well known brands, but providing the same or better quality. When you take a look at the brands they are competing against, Troy-built and Cub Cadet, they provide almost the exact machine.

The people behind this smaller company are working to provide the customer service and quality product to make a name for themselves and in our opinion, they are doing a good job!

Woodworking Gift Ideas | Under $100

    Gift ideas!

Buying a gift for the woodworking in your lift is difficult. You don't know what they have, what they don't have, what they want, what they need, or what works with the items they already have. If you are looking for ideas, this is intended to provide you some ideas and inspiration when searching for gifts that a woodworker would love to have in his or her shop. We have compiled a list and some descriptions that will help make this process a little easier.

Below is a list for woodworking items that are under $100. These items are great for all situations, stand alone gifts, white elephants gifts, stocking stuffers, or sidekick gifts with larger items.

Rockler 3-piece silicon glue kit - An excellent stocking stuffer for your woodworker. Once glue dries, it can be peeled off. This saves money!

FastCap Tape Measures - Tape measures are extremely underrated in the shop. There are specific tape measures for specific applications or people. If your woodworker is left handed, get them a lefty tape measure!

FastCap GluBot and BabeBot - We use the GlueBot nearly everyday. They are a wonderful innovation to the glue bottle which allows the user to apply/dispense glue at any angle. The BabeBot is great for smaller or craft type projects!

FastCap 2P-10 CA Glue Family of Products: This product is used every single day we are in the shop. The activator allows the user to instantly bond two surfaces together within seconds. Decreasing waiting time and increasing productivity in the shop. Shop time is valuable, don't wait for wood glue to dry on those certain applications, use CA glue!

CA Glue - Available in two sizes and a variety of viscosities. We used medium and thick in the shop the most.

Activator - Applied to one surface after the glue has been applied to the other surface. Once they touch, the activator kicks the CA glue and sets it within a few seconds

*Rockler Silicone Mat - Another great stocking stuffer to cover your work surface or bench. Once glue, epoxy, paint, etc dries, simply peel it off.

*Rockler LED Utility Lights - A great alternative to increase lighting in your woodworkers space. Whether it is a shop, garage, or shed, you can increase the light and also save money while doing it!

*Rockler Custom Knife Kits and Knife Scales - A fun project that also makes great gifts! Purchase the premade knife scales or make your own. We recommend to buy a few at a time.

Black and Decker 20 Volt Max Drill-Driver - A great starter upgrade to today's technology. If your woodworker has an older drill and wants to upgrade, this is a great option if they do smaller projects.

*Rockler Corner Radius Routing Template - The routing template guides the user to make perfect radiuses on material. Excellent gift if you notice rounded corners on your woodworkers project.

Rockler Bench Cookies - In our opinion, a shop must! They are excellent to bring safety, help protect your project, and convenience to your woodworkers shop. They can be used to prop up your material when cutting with a jigsaw, keep your project in place when sanding, or use the pyramids while letting the finish dry.

FastCap Pocket Tool Kit - A 7 tool kit that include, Awl, diamond sharpener, laminate knife, saw, file/rasp, putty knife, combo putty knife and that is all included in a hard case. This is great if your woodworker does mobile projects on the house or does work for family or friends. They keep a variety of tools in a safe package.

*Ryobi 18 Volt Quiet Strike Pulse Driver - If your woodworker has sensitive hearing, needs a pulse driver, or needs to upgrade his/her impact driver. The Ryobi Quiet Strike is quite impressive. It is very quiet and packs a punch. Great for someone that does any project across the spectrum.

EGO 56V Self-Propelled 52cm/21" Mower review (BONUS comparison with original 20" mower)
    Oz Tool Talk

    Published on Nov 20, 2016
oztooltalk review EGO's top of the range, and most sophisticated mower yet. This 52cm / 21" self-propelled mower just goes and goes and goes, which is no surprise packing a whopping 7.5Ah 56V battery.

Along with it's regular (non-propelled) brother, these mowers have a powerful, brushless, load-sensing motor that will impress even the staunchest battery critics.

YARDMAX 35 Ton 306cc Horizontal / Vertical Gas Log Splitter Review - YU3566
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Nov 19, 2016
Price the YARDMAX YU3566 35 Ton Full Beam Gas Log Splitter on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2f7QaYp
The Big Splitter - Go big or go home, right? A 35 ton log splitter is one big machine that helps to speed up the splitting process. In fact, in our testing, we put this unit up against another brand 25 tom log splitter and it took us half the time to go through the same wood. This is mostly due to speed of the log splitter and the ability for this machine to power through wet wood. The oak we split would pop pretty easy, but the more wet box elder and pines were like splitting stringy sponges and made the machine work a bit more to split the wood. We threw a lot of wood at the Yardmax splitter and not once did we find a log that it could not spit, but I am sure there is a knoted up mess out there somewhere that could bring the machine to its knees.

The 35 ton log splitter comes with a 10.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine that is easy to start and not overly loud at full throttle. We found the log splitter to be fast and in most cases, the included four way splitter to work well. In some wood, the four way splitter would not make overly clean cuts, so if you are a perfectionist on how your wood looks that you burn, the four way splitter may not be your choice in some wood. But since the wood is just going to be burned, we found the four way splitter to increase productivity significantly. Like all other log splitters that we have used, they will get hot over time. This unit never got to the point that we felt it needed to take a break, even over 6 hours of hard use. It will handle a 26" log and comes with a lot of extras that others charge for, like log tables and the four way splitter.

Where can you buy Yardmax Equipment?

Yardmax products are sold in Family Farm and Home stores and also available on Amazon. Below is a link to pricing of the 26" two stage snow blower on Amazon.

    Features

Powered by Briggs & Stratton engines.
Log spinner foot plate easily rotates logs for splitting, reducing stress on the beam.
U-Beam structural design is significantly stronger than typical I-Beam design.
4-way wedge (included) is designed for quick connection and jam free operation with no need to change log stripper plates.
Longer table length to accommodate up to 26" logs.
Oversized hydraulic components provide the shortest cycle time in its class.
Hydraulic oil filter is mounted inside the reservoir, eliminating damage from falling logs and operator entanglement.
Dual end cylinder support for equal weight distribution and wear reduction.
Beam handle offers easy transition from a horizontal to a vertical position.
Log stripper mounted to end of hydraulic cylinder to remove tough log jams.
Pair of log cradles — 2-positions, with option for mountable log table.
    Full Beam or Half Beam

Yardmax makes both full and half beam log splitters in 25 to 35 ton. The major difference between the two is going to be length. The full beam looks like it is a very beefy unit with a lot of metal. It is longer and a bit wider carrying the hydraulic fluid across the rear axle area, rather than through the middle of the machine. So the features of the full beam make it a touch easier to tow.

Those features that make it slightly easier to tow also take a small bit away from the ergonomics of the full beam. The tire on the operator side sticks out a bit farther and can sometime feel slightly in the way. The reach for the operators handle is slightly longer. But you gain better towing.

There is no right or wrong in this situation, it comes down to more of what you are used to. In our case, we normally have two to three guys running the process of splitting and stacking. So the operator is mostly in the same area and most of the items listed are not a big deal. If you split wood alone, the half beam would be more user friendly for walking up to it and carrying wood away.

    Assembly

If you purchase the Yardmax log splitter from Amazon, it will show up in a nice wooden box. No worries on assembly as most of it is assembled. Before you touch the box, watch this video and it will tell you all the tips and trick on how to open the box and safely assemble the machine.

Makita 18 Volt Sub Compact Combo Kit Review CX200RB
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Dec 8, 2016
Price the Makita CX200RB 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Sub-Compact Brushless Cordless 2-Pc. Combo Kit on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2fXks1g
Less battery platforms the better! - It doesn't matter if you are in a stationary shop, mobile workshop, or on the jobsite, having as few battery platforms with your cordless tools the better. Managing batteries and chargers between brands is hard enough, when you bring tools within the same brand that have different voltages and now need a specific battery pack, it just increases the needs to think about the tool and battery you grab, charge, or need to pack when heading to the jobsite. We are a firm believer that if you can keep an operation as simple as possible, there will be less headaches. Less batteries and chargers to pack and remember is always a huge advantage! Makita has created a category of tool that is a solution to having the best of two worlds, under the same world famous battery platform.

Makita 18volt Sub Compact Combo Kit

Makita set out to solve the multiple battery platform by combining the best of both worlds, size and weight of a 12 volt platform and the power of an 18 volt battery. They released their 2-piece combo kit that looks sexy, performs like you would expect, and comes in at a great price. Both the drill-driver and the impact driver are very light and in a small frame. This small little package doesn't compromise the performance of either unit, they are powered by Makita's world famous 18 volt battery platform.

    Kit includes:

    18 volt Sub-Compact Drill-Driver
    18 volt Sub-Compact Impact Driver
    Rapid Optimum Charger
All stored in a soft carrying case
    Specs:

    18 Volt Sub-Compact Drill-Driver:

Weights only 2.8 pounds with a battery
    Rubber overmold
6 3/8" long - compact and ergonomic design
    Mechanical variable 2-speed transmission
    Setting 1: 0-500 RPM
    Setting 2: 0-1,700 RPM
Delivers 350 pounds of max torque
    LED Light
    Reversible Belt Clip
    1/2" Chuck
    BL Brushless motor
Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) - improved dust and water resistance
Star Protection Computer Controls - protects against overloading, over-discharging, and overheating
    18 Volt Sub-Compact Impact Driver:

Weights only 2.6 pounds with a battery
    Rubber overmold
5 5/16"" long - compact and ergonomic design
    Variable Speed
    Setting 1:
    0-1,300 RPM
    0-1,600 IPM
    Setting 2:
    0-3,000 RPM
    0-3,900 IPM
Delivers 1,240 pounds of max torque
A-Mode or Assist Mode - Great for driving fasteners in metal and threading applications. Starts slow then increases speed
    LED Light
    Reversible Belt Clip
    BL Brushless motor
Extreme Protection Technology (XPT) - improved dust and water resistance
Star Protection Computer Controls - protects against overloading, over-discharging, and overheating

    Another 18 volt tool?

That is the wrong way to think about it! Think about it this way, if you are someone that currently is invested in Makita's 18 volt battery platform, or even if you are not, but are looking at getting into a set of drill driver and impact driver that is a little smaller and lighter for those tight reach applications or even the ones that require the operator to work over his/her head. Why purchase a 12 volt tool and invest in another battery platform to haul more batteries and chargers to the jobsite all while decreasing the performance that you are used to?

Makita's 18 volt Sub-Compact combo kits gives you exactly that. The small package but keeping the same performance of an 18 volt battery. If you already own Makita's 18 volt batteries, you can use them on your new tools. No needs for different batteries and chargers. If you don't have Makita's batteries, why by a 12 volt tool with less performance when you can buy a 18 volt package with the same benefits as a smaller 12 volt platform.

    Sub-Compact in the woodworking shop

We have had these Sub-Compact tools from Makita for well over two weeks and we love them. They are changing the way we think about what unit we grab to complete the task. For instance, at our CNC station, we keep Makita's 18 volt compact drill driver and impact driver at the ready. They are 18 volt tools that are smaller and lighter than their big brothers. We don't need the heft at the CNC station but could use those units at a different station. We replaced them with the sub-compact tools. We get a smaller and lighter tool but always have the 18 volt power and performance when we need it.

Assembling projects often requires pilot holes and screws to keep two pieces together. Our typical screw size is 1 1/4" or 1 5/8" screw. We are not driving large heavy screws so we don't need a full size drill. BUT, an 18 volt battery gives us the performance to get our drilling and driving screws much faster. Using Makita Sub-Compact units, we are able to decrease the size and weight of our tool but maintain the power of the 18 volt battery. The smaller package puts less wear and tear on our bodies and we are able to work longer and faster.
