    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Dec 12, 2016
What Gauge Nailer? So you are making good progress on collecting the tools needed for woodworking, but you are getting closer and closer to the point making the decision on what gauge nailer to buy. Doing it by hand is not working and your nailset, no matter how careful, will usually miss one or two and wind up banging the wood or being unable to set the nail deep enough.

You have been searching for information and recommendations regarding nail guns and what size nail or pin that one should start out with. Of course, the first question is: What do you want to do with it?

Our Youtube video will help you with this choice and let you know what projects each nail size is capable of doing. Be it a 15 gauge, 16 gauge, 18 gauge brad nail or 23 gauge pin nail, we will show you the size hole it leaves and the strength of each nail.

Milwaukee M18/M12 Wireless Jobsite Speaker Review - 2891-20
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Dec 28, 2016
Price the Milwaukee M18/M12 Wireless Jobsite Speaker at ACME Tools: http://www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/m...
Tough Speaker - Testing a wireless speaker is mostly about the quality of sound, runtime and ability to have a clear wireless connection. Since Milwaukee's new wireless jobsite speaker is also IP54 rated, we decided to unleash some more vigorous testing to see how it would handle some extreme shop tests. Milwaukee has stated this is the loudest jobsite speaker on the market. It very well might be as it is pretty loud and clear. The downside is that there is very little base. The mids and highs are very clear without much bade to distort anything. While on a jobsite, the lows might not be as important, but if someone wants high quality sound, they will have a speaker that is designed to be loud and clear with Milwaukee's settings for bass and treble.

So for sound, we have a good performing speaker with a mediocre performance in quality of sound. When it comes to being tough, this speaker performed flawlessly. IP54 ratings mean it can get dusty and resist water spray. We flat out dunked this speaker under water and it stayed playing music and continued to work even after we dropped it over and over with the battery.

    Features

    Industry's Loudest, Clearest Sound System.
Stream high definition music wirelessly with Bluetooth from over 100ft.
Compatible with the M18 and M12 systems featuring over 200 tools, or power with AC adapter. 2 Passive Radiators maximizes clarity and volume of bass.
2 High Definition Mid-Woofers maximizes clarity at loudest volume.

2 High Range Tweeters drives greater range of treble.
    IP54 water and dust protected.
    Impact resistant roll cage.
    Protected 2.1A USB power outlet.
    The Hype

Sometimes the marketing claims of new tools get in our heads and we have such high expectations that we rate the tools lower than what some might feel they should be. We read the news about this speaker, looked at the packaging and it claims the loudest and clearest and we were jumping up and down with excitement. Once we played it on the jobsite with 8 people around, we sort of regretted telling everyone that this wireless speaker was the best out there. Not only did we notice the lack of base, everyone else on the jobsite said the same thing after an hour. The voices came through clear, but the drums and other low tones seemed to be nonexistent.

That does not mean we won't use this speaker! For the most part, when working outdoors, the base does not carry well. So this speaker is a perfect solution for cranking up to 100 percent and letting it play without worry of a speaker blowing. It is loud and clear.

As we stated in the video, if you want quality sound, the jobsite radios are still the way to go because you can adjust the bass and treble.

    Specifications

    Voltage 12v and 18v

    Lithium 2 stage Snow Blower!
    sixtyfiveford

    Published on Dec 27, 2016
Can we put away our gas powered snow blowers......

This is one of best solutions to electric snowblowers I've ever seen. I was impressed at how well it threw but it does have it's faults. It will not replace a 10+hp unit but will give smaller 2 stage machines a run for their money.

    Current specs and Price: http://amzn.to/2i5SB2U
    Snow Joe iON24SB-XR 80V Max 5.0 Ah

    PROS:
    Zero Maintenance
    Quiet
Tons of throwing power(more than a lot of gas 2 stage units)
Batteries can be used in their summer equipment as well
Decent battery run time(30+minutes during heavy test) 5.0ah
    Reversible skid wear shoes
    One piece stamped steel housing
Chute clearing stick, though it never clogged on me
    Serrated Auger

    CONS:
Batteries take a long time to fully charge from dead(a few hours)
Price(I think you can get higher quality from a equal price gas unit)
Needs more weight over wheels to get better traction
A little too slow for my liking(50% faster would be great)
Chute side to side angle a little lacking
Safety switch for auger a little annoying to grab with gloves
    Bottom scraper bar very thin
Lights on the front are too dim to be useful unless pitch black

    What would make it awesome?
    WISH IT HAD:
    Dash readout of battery remaining
    Electric chute control
Variable speed drive on the handle(further you pull trigger=faster)
    Bright LED Headlights
Being able to plug it in to finish a job if need be

Bosch 14-gallon Dust Extractor with Automatic Filter Clean Review- VAC140A
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Dec 30, 2016
Price the Bosch 14-gallon Dust Extractor at ACME Tools: http://www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/b...
Dust sucks! - Whether you are in your workshop, garage, in the house, or on the job-site, sawdust is no fun! It makes everything messy, it takes forever to clean-up, and it is extremely bad for your health. Wood dust is a known human carcinogen (can cause cancer). Wood dust becomes a potential heath problem when the wood particles become airborne and are inhaled. The best way to combat wood dust is to never let it get air-born, and the best way to do that is to collect it right at the tool.

There are other ways to combat airborne dust but that is for another blog.
Bosch 14-gallon Dust Extractor with Automatic Filter Clean - VAC140A

The Bosch VAC140A is a phenomenal dust extracting unit with a great combination of air flow and suction power. It also has the ability for wet pickup with an automatic shut off if the liquid level gets to high. This prevents damage to the power unit (motor) and filter. When paired with a HEPA filter (sold separately), it meets the EPA of a HEPA vacuum.

With many features that set it apart, the Automatic Filter Cleaning (AFC) is the most prominent. The AFC button is located on the front of the unit. It will pulse 3 times, ever 15-seconds, to back burst the filter keeping it clean and free of dust. This keeps the unit performing at max capacity.
    Included:

    14-gallon dust extractor unit
    10 ft. vacuum hose
    Bend nozzle
    Cellulose flat filter
    Plastic Bag

    Specifications:

    150 CFM
    9.5 Amps
    22.25" Long
    14.75" Wide
    38" pounds
Vacuum Suction Pressure - 242 millibars
    Features:

Automatic Filter cleaning - Cleans filter after every 15 seconds to maintain maximum suction power
L-BOXX integration - bring your supplies and tools with you
Power Tool Activation - allows power tol's switch to turn vacuum on and off
Power Broker Dial - allocating power between the tool and the vacuum
Flat Filter Design - maximizes unit capacity
Vacuum hose wrap - keep it organized
Cord wrap - keep it organized
Wet vacuuming w/ high level sensor - pick up liquids with peace of mind
Metal frame, rubber wheels, and locking caster - built to withstand the toughest job-sites
    Power Tool Activation

A power outlet that is located on the front of the unit allows the user to plug their power tool into the front of the dust extractor. This allows the user to set the VAC140A's power switch into the "Power Tool Activation" mode and simply power their tool on and off and the dust extractor will do the same.

This is a great time saver and keeps the user from forgetting to turn on their dust collection.

    Power Broker Dial

The Power Broker Dial is a great feature that allows the user decrease the AMPS that the VAC140A draws. This can accomplish three things:

The power tool may draw too much power and cause the vacuum to have lower power and suction. Simply decrease the Power Broker Dial and give more power to the tool.
The suction that is required for certain applications, such as sanding, may benefit from a lower suction to optimize the fine dust collection. Simply lower the AMPs and decrease the suction.
When the user is on the job-site and maybe using a high AMP tool in conjunction with the VAC140A, the user may trip a breaker. Especially if they are using an extension cord. Adjusting the Power Broker Dial and decreasing the AMPS, the user maybe able to complete their job on a lower AMP breaker and not trip it.
    Hose and Cord Wrap

As simple as this sounds, hose and cord management is very important anywhere. When we are in the workshop, being organize is both a utilitarian and physiological thing. We want the workshop, job-site, or work vehicle to look nice and organized. This allows us to be more efficient, less stress, and have a better mood while working.

Simply wrap the hose and cord and the unit looks organized and isn't a tripping hazard or gets caught up with other cords or equipment.
    Conclusion

If you are someone that wants a dust free environment with a unit that is much more than a Shop Vac, then we highly recommend checking out the 14-gallon VAC140A with Automatic Filter Cleaning by Bosch. The unit does an exceptional job at collecting both fine dust and large chips while the AFC keeps the filter fresh and the performance to the max.

Pair this unit up with a tool that has quality dust collection capabilities, and it is sure to keep your dust problems at bay.

Bosch Cordless Jigsaw Buyer Guide - 18 or 12 volt

Price the Bosch JSH180B 18-volt Jig Saw on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2iLBQb8 or ACME Tools: http://www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/b...
Jigsaws are a powerful tool to have in your workshop or your tool bag on the job site. Especially when the jigsaw is cordless and you have the freedom to do what you wish and not be tied down with a cord. They are a flexible tool that allows for quick cuts to break down material, coping cuts, circular, convex, and concave cuts, and much more! With a variety of brands, styles, and battery platforms, picking the right jigsaw can be a tricky decision. Today we are going to look at the two cordless units from Bosch, the 18 volt JSH180 and the 12 volt JS120.

    Similar features

We have tested and reviewed both of the cordless Bosch jigsaws in the past. 18 Volt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaOdX... 12 Volt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFfaH...
Both of these saws have similar features and a few that one has over another. We will quickly go over these features and then take a look at each unit separately, and what each unit is better at.

    Features

    Both units:

    One-handed blade insertion and ejection
Footplate adjusts for bevel cuts up to 45 degrees
Die-cast aluminum footplate with no-mar plastic overshoe
    3 orbital settings
    Cordless
    Variable speed dial
    T-shank blades

    One hand blade operation

    10.24" Length

    Steel - 3/8"

    12 volt unit:

    9.4" Length

What unit is best for what task?

With similar features, the two cordless jig saws that Bosch offers are separated by three main criteria: battery platform, grip style, type of work you do.

    Battery Platform

    18-volt battery
The obvious difference between the two units is the difference in the battery platform. The larger JSH180B is 18-volt while the smaller JS120BN is 12-volt. This is a pretty significant difference.

The 18-volt unit will have longer run-time, more power, but comes in a larger more heavy unit. While the 12-volt unit will provide a shorter run-time, less power, it is being delivered in a smaller, more compact size.

The 18-volt will be much more suited to heavy duty applications such as: thicker material, metal, larger cutting jobs, etc. While the 12-volt unit will be perfect for the smaller applications that require more finesse such as: cabinet cut-outs, getting in tight corners, etc.

    Grip Style

With this being purely preference, we think it is an important point.

The 18-volt units has the more traditional jig saw style grip. This is great for the more suited heavier cuts. It allows the user excellent control and allows him/her to apply downward and forward pressure to complete the cut with comfort.

The 12-volt unit has the newer barrel style grip. This is great for the more finesse cuts and also being upside down. If you are a contractor or cabinet installer that is in tight spaces from time to time, the barrel grip is extremely comfortable for those tasks.

    Type of work you do

As we mentioned earlier, the two units are powered by two different battery platform. This is going to effect the power that is available to complete the larger tasks. With that being said, we would recommend the larger 18-volt unit to the person that completes these heavier tasks more often. Maybe on the job-site, construction site, or in the workshop. Large dimensional lumber, metal, and even long sheet good cutting operations.

If you find yourself doing smaller, more precise work or if you are someone that uses a jig saw on walls, upside-down, or at awkward angles. We would highly recommend the 12-volt unit.

EXTREME POWER!! Splitting Wood? You NEED this! ( Yardmax 35-Ton Full Beam Log Splitter )
    Real Tool Reviews

    Published on Jan 6, 2017
UNREAL POWER with the monster! 35-tons of force blasts through anything and everything we put it up against & it gets a tremendous amount of work done on just one tank of gas!

Yardmax sent over their heavy duty 35-ton Log Splitter for us to check out --- this is the "full beam" version (orange) that is the heaviest and most powerful in the entire lineup. It did not disappoint & other than initially putting it together out of the shipping crate, using it is extremely easy.

If you heat with firewood, sell firewood, or just hate swinging a maul/ax.....get one of these.

Unlike "box store" models that appear every fall out in front of Lowes/Home Depot, the Yardmax has features not seen on any other units. Along with that they are selling these for far less than comparable versions from other manufacturers --- with free shipping online.

Check out our intro article when this came in for more info on the specs/features here -- http://www.realtoolreviews.com/yardma...

Buy one on Amazon here --- http://amzn.to/2iZvDZq

    *** 2 pieces of advice ***

#1 - Shop around online....Amazon's price goes up & down --- currently these retail for $1,499.00 & have free shipping (+$50 lift gate charge if needed).

#2 - Do NOT attempt to assemble by yourself! You need someone to balance the beam vertically while you install the base to it!

    Ridgid Gen5X 18V Brushless Belt Sander Review - R86065B

Cordless Belt Sander - The days of poor performing cordless tools have passed. Today many tools using a battery platform have similar performance to corded models. Woodworking and construction are seeing a "boom" in tools that are cordless, but also feature some more options added for the user's health and safety. While looking at the Ridgid 18v brushless belt sander, we found that the new air filtration technology is a big step up for people who use sanders indoors. The dust collection on this model works exceptionally well when the bag is emptied often. This can help reduce simple reactions, allergies and even cancer that could be caused from long term exposure.

While the safety factor is a huge part of this tool, the fact that this is the first cordless belt sander overshadows health. This tool does have the power to match many of the other Ridgid corded belt sanders on the market. Like the related corded models, much of the unit is plastic. That is not a surprise as most tools are these days. The belt sander feels like it is built well and it performs great. The belt track knob does stick out a bit in the lower area close to the bottom of the sander and in our YouTube video we beat up on it a bit to make sure there were no concerns of it breaking.

    Features

    Brushless motor
    Variable speed dial: 400-935 FPM
    Belt size: 3"×18"
    Adjustable belt tracking
    Adjustable forward handle
1-1/4" dust port and dust bag
    Tool-free belt change
    Battery Life

A belt sander is a tool used to remove material, be it wood, paint, varnish, metal or just about any type of stock that can be sanded. It takes a significant amount of power and this tool does deliver the power without much issue. We did find that over an extended use of multiple batteries that the air cooling the motor gets hot and blows directly on your forward hand. In most cases, people would choose a corded belt sander for that long of a job. In testing, we also found this sander to be fairly hungry for batteries. While using a 4.0Ah battery, we could fully drain a battery in around 5 minutes while working with pine. Bumping up to the new 5.0Ah battery, we could get 8-10 minutes of run time while sanding a wide flat board. If you decrease the load by a significant amount, sanding plywood edges, we found you might get 15 to 20 minutes from this tool with the 5.0Ah battery. That is not too bad, as long as you have multiple batteries in your shop and have the time to charge one while using another. Many people will not use this tool more than a few minutes and move on to another task. Since this is a bare tool, we want to let you know that having more than one battery is needed to keep the shop moving and a compact battery is not going to cut it on this tool.

    Overall

We were really impressed with the performance and layout of the tool. The few items we initially noted to be "weak" we quickly proven to hold up to abuse. The only item that we could ask for improvement on is the trigger lock. In order to engage the trigger lock, you must use a second hand. The small button was not easy to push in, especially if you have large hands. We enjoyed the dust collection as this tool does make a lot of dust to collect! Being able to connect it to a 1-1/4" vacuum or dust collection system is a bonus. If you are in the Ridgid 18 volt line and have larger batteries, this tool is one to consider. It is currently priced at $149.00 at Home Depot as a bare tool.

Not just for painting I use the damn thing for all kinds of stuff now. I put a duster on the end and clean my high ceilings, and ceiling fans without having to go get a ladder. I clamp a putty knife on the end and patch woodpecker holes. I screw a broom on the end to scrub mildew off vinyl siding. Very handy tool.

Today we are looking at the Craftex belt sander which is going to come in handy in the future as we machine some projects. Craftex I believe is a brand that is only sold in Canada. In America it will be branded under another brand name. This will come in handy in the future for some many projects

Teknatool Nova Galaxi DVR 1644 Lathe Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Feb 9, 2017
Price the Teknatool Nova Galaxi DVR 1644 Lathe on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2kA5sM9
Woodturning is a the craft of using a wood lathe with hand-held tools to shape a piece of wood while it is rotating around the center. Woodturners can make many items on the wood lathe, including but not limited to: tool handles, candlesticks, egg cups, knobs, lamps, rolling pins, cylindrical boxes, ornaments, pens, chessmen, etc.

A woodturner needs just a few items to really be productive at the lathe. A lathe, some woodturning tools, and some material is the basic components of woodturning. Obviously you can drill down and get very detailed in all of these categories but today we are going to focus on the wood lathe.

Innovation in the woodturning world is a slow process and this process typically focuses on the tools and accesssories. Very rarely do we see an innovation in the actual wood lathe itself. Until now.

    Wood lathes

Wood lathes can be very simple tool and it also can be a very complex tool with tons of features. The tool itself is very simple. It has a headstock and a tailstock. Your material is placed in between using a variety of methods (that is an entire blog in and of itself). With putting power to the headstock, it will grab you material (using a chuck or a spur) and rotate it. Then he/she will use their woodturning tools and remove material to achieve a round and balanced shape. Then they can continue to remove material as they shape their work.

Wood lathes are categorized by their capacity. Here are a few terms you should get familiar with before we continue:

HP - Horse power. How much power the machines has.

Throw - the diameter of material you can put on the lathe. Measure from the center of the headstock to the bed of the lathe and take that times two.

Speed range - Measured in RPMS (Revolutions per minute).

Outboard throw capacity - The size of material that can be turned with the headstock in reverse.

Between Center capacity - the length of material between the headstock and the tailstock.

    Nova Galaxi dvr 1644 Lathe

Packed with their dvr technology, NOVA's Galaxi dvr 1644 woodworking lathe is sure to turn heads at your local woodworking/woodturning store. When turning on a large lathe, a woodturner wants their lathe to be heavy and stout. This is to keep the unit from vibrating when turning off balanced work and to achieve a very smooth cutting operation when using fine woodturning tools. The Galaxi dvr is solid cast iron and is very heavy.

NOVA has a full range of accessories that fit this unit right out of the packaging: chucks, spurs, live centers, tool rests, etc.

    Direct Drive
