Ryobi ONE+ 18-Volt Brushless String Trimmer Review P2090
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Jun 11, 2017
Best Ryobi Trimmer To Date - Ryobi's new ONE+ 18-Volt Brushless String Trimmer, Model P2090 is powered by a brushless motor and includes a 4Ah 18-Volt Lithium+ battery and charger. Ryobi produced this string trimmer to directly compete with the corded models of the same size making sure the user did not sacrifice power for the cordless freedom. The P2090 string trimmer can be used in an 11" or 13" swath for either more performance, power or battery life. We were very impressed by the power and approximately 30 minute runtime in our testing. This is Ryobi's best string trimmer to date!

Equipped with .080 trimmer line, the new easy feed line system allows the user to change the string trimmer line by threading new line into the head and using a crank to spin it onto the spool with ease. Ryobi backs your purchase with a 3 year warranty.

This size and style of trimmer seems to be a staple for city lots and subdivisions alike. When we looked for places and people to test this trimmer, we found many who had a similar sized trimmer with a cord or a wore out battery. Each person who tested it told us that this unit had more power than their corded model. Many were surprised at the price of $149.00 because it is a brushless tool and includes a 4Ah battery that can be used on other Ryobi ONE+ tools.

    P2090 Features

    Brushless motor
RELE EASY bump feed head with speed winder
    Variable speed with 2-speed trigger
Premium dual 0.080 in. twisted line
    Adjustable front handle
Adjustable 11 in. to 13 in. cutting width
    3-year limited warranty
    Battery Convenience

From the time you open the box, it is clear that Ryobi designed this tool for convenience. The handle can be easily adjusted for your height and working position. The string length can be adjusted for a larger cut or more battery life. There is no need to really think about much when using this trimmer as it does most of the small tasks while you use the trimmer without you knowing. To conserve battery, the user can choose a low speed and increase the speed with a flip of a switch to high for more power needed for longer grass or weeds.

If you have a smaller yard and want to ditch the cord, this unit is a great option that includes Lithium batteries. All of the people who used this unit were surprised at how long he trimmer lasted and how quiet the unit was. When it is compared to some of the older electric models, this unit really shows what modern technology can do.

Simple Saw Blade Comparison for Table Saws and Miter Saws
    John Taylor

    Published on Jun 11, 2017
If you are relatively new to miter saws and table saws you know that finding the right blade for your project can be somewhat intimidating. Perhaps you have gone to one of the big box stores and walked over to the saw blade display only to be confused by all the types of blades. There are dozens of blade manufacturers and an even greater number of blade types if we take into consideration all of the possible blade properties such as kerf, tooth count, tooth geometry, etc. I hope this video will take some of the mystery out of the basic types of blades that are available for your wood working projects.

Milwaukee Tool 52 in. 11-Drawer Mobile Workcenter Review 48-22-8522
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Jun 23, 2017
Better Configuration - Milwaukee Tool added to their mobile workstation line with a new 52 inch, 11 drawer mobile workbench, 48-22-8522, that has been designed to hold more tools and be more ergonomic that prior models. One item that sets this apart from other workbenches is the reversible 1.2 in. thick wood top being elevated to allow use of clamps on 3 sides of the cabinet. Being able to use the top for clamping is a time saver for any type of work. The open top for clamping leaves the top 2 drawers open and visible. This area is going to work differently for many people, but it provides easy access to many items. It is also deep enough to fit jobsite organizers that could store fasteners or hardware.

Just like the 60" model, the new 52" work surface is 22 inches deep. Professional tool storage systems will work in the drawers and space is available for larger or more tools. The workbench is 41 inches tall for a better ergonomic standing position, especially if you are on the taller side. The top 2 open drawers are visible and conveniently accessible for your organizers, hardware, or can storage.

One of the largest changes from the 60" model is a full-width drawer on the 52". We believe many people will choose the 52" over the 60" just for that drawer. The 52" offers the same soft closing, 100 lb. rated drawer slides that are awesome. This workstation also has a power strip with USB outlets, many places to mount chargers or other items.

    Drawer Sizes

    Pullout drawers under wood top: (Two) 22.6 in. W x 21.4 in. D x 5 in. H
    Full-width drawer: (One) 47.7 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 4.4 in. H.
    Left side drawer bank: (One) 30.6 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 3.4 in. H, (One) 30.6 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 3.5 in. H, (One) 30.6 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 10.4 in. H.
    Right side drawer bank: (One) 14.7 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 2.3 in. H, (Three) 14.7 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 2.4 in. H, (One) 14.7 in. W x 19.9 in. D x 7.5 in. H
    Model # 48-22-8552 Features

Full extension, soft-close, 100 lb. rated ball bearing drawer slides
Reinforced 6-Gauge angle iron trolley base frame provides 1,800 lb. load capacity
1.2 in. solid wood top is coated on all 6 sides for protection and durability
Deep bottom drawer has a double set of 100 lb. slides and power tool organizers
Large, push bar style, steel tubular side handle can be mounted on either right or left side of cabinet
Four 5 in. x 2 in. industrial grade, polypropylene casters
    Barrel key internal locking mechanism
6-outlet UL listed power bar with two 2.1 Amp USB charging ports
    Pre-cut, premium solid drawer liners
    Non-marking corner bumpers
    Bolt-on side storage shelf
    Adjustable long tool holder
    Assembled dimensions with handle and casters installed: 55.4 in. W x 22.3 in. D x 41.1 in. H
    Weighs approximately 346 lbs.
    60" vs 52" Workbenches

From our perspective, we would like to take a few items from Milwaukee's 60" workbench and combine them with some items from the 52". First, the full width drawer on the 52" is huge to us. The clamping is nice on the 52", but that one large side drawer on the 60" is really nice for a chop saw or other larger items. The model you choose will depend mostly on how you will use the workstation.

The 52" stands out a bit more to woodworkers who might want to use this as a small assembly table in their workshop. The layout provides woodworkers places for longer measuring and marking tools along with open access to fasteners. Optional side storage can hold screwdrivers to nut drivers. Also, during the small assembly, one can choose what side the handle and swivel casters are on to make it work best in your shop.

Power is a nice option but we fell that this workstation would be best fit in the center of the room. Planting it next to a wall might not be the best application. This workstation and its brothers are some of the nicer ones on the market for the price. Whatever you choose, you won’t go wrong.

DEWALT DCS570 20V 7-1/4" Circular Saw with Blade Brake Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Jun 21, 2017
Price the DEWALT DCS570 20V 7-1/4" Circular Saw on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2sxdAAM
FlexVolt's Little Bro - Dewalt added a new brushless 7-1/4″ circular saw to the 20 volt max lineup as part of a growing brushless tool selection. Dewalt's first brushless circular saw was the 60v Flexvolt the only runs on the new 60V batteries that can also be used on the 20V line. The new DCS570 is directly meant to allow Dewalt 20 volt users to have a more powerful and up to date choice in circular saws. This saw includes a lot of features found in the FlexVolt saw, including an included blade brake.

It is nice to see Dewalt expand 20 volt line with a new brushless circular saw as it provides a bit of insight to current 20 volt users. The FlexVolt battery made the water a bit muddy as to where Dewalt was going to place research and development dollars. The outlook has been that Dewalt was going to place the premium products in the FlexVolt line and push high end users into the new platform. The new 20 volt circular saw has a 2-9/16″ cutting capacity at 90 degrees that can cut 3 by lumber in a single pass. Electric blade brakes are included on many pro model saws and it is nice to see it on the new 20 volt. Similar to the FlexVolt, the shoe on the new 20 volt is made out of aluminum.

    FlexVolt Similar

Let's really cut to the chase, the new 20 volt circular saw is almost identical to the FlexVolt circular saw (DCS575). About the only difference in appearance is the color of the blade guard. Both Dewalt saws have a high grade aluminum shoe, or base plate. Internally, the motor is different and the saw runs at a slightly lower RPM of 5500 vs the FlexVolt at 5800 RPM. There is a pretty fair difference in the performance and speed of cut side. While the 20 volt is no slouch, it will not rip through 3 sheets of OSB at the same speed as the FlexVolt.

If you are using these saws all day long, in bare tool form, they weigh in at about the same weight, 7.5 lbs. But add in the weight of a Flexvolt battery and the 20 volt will win as a lighter tool at the scales all day long.

    DCS570 Features

    7-1/4″ blade
2-9/16″ max cutting capacity at 90°
    5,500 RPM max
57° bevel with stops at 45° and 22.5°
    Rubber overmold on handle
    Blade brake
    High grade aluminum base plate
    Weighs 7.5 lbs
    POWER

So the question everyone want to know, does the FlexVolt look alike saw have the same power? Well, we are sorry to say, but the answer is "No". That is not to say that is does not have the power to keep everyone on the jobsite happy. It will rip and cross cut two by lumber without issue. The place where it lacks is when stacking multiple pieces of OSB and making cuts. Stacking three 3/4" sheets can take the saw down to a crawl or worse.

If someone is looking for one the most powerful saws on the market, they should look to the FlexVolt in Dewalt's offerings. We did run the FlexVolt battery in this saw and found an increase in runtime, but not an increase in power. We are getting spoiled with some super-powerful saws coming out and our expectations might be a bit high. This upgrade makes the older brushed Dewalt saw look really slow. If you are planted in the 20 volt max line, this is a good buy.

Edge Pro Professional 4 Knife Sharpening System
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Jun 25, 2017
Price the Edge Pro Professional Kit 4 Knife Sharpener System on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2sGTV1M
Dull is Dangerous! - Whether you are cutting veggies int he kitchen for your favorite meal, widdling on a piece of wood, or chiseling hand cut dovetails you rely on the cutting edge to do the job. A dull knife, chisel, or any other cutting tool is dangerous. While a dull cutting edge is unpredictable and scary a sharp cutting edge is predictable and dependable. You can anticipate what a sharp edge will do! Cut of course! Keeping a cutting edge can be tricky. It first starts with quality steel and a proper sharpening method.

    Proper steel

Take this section with a grain of salt as we are not experts and we know this topic can bring out some passionate people. A quality cutting edge can be put on any steel but how long that edge will last had many variables but one main variable is the quality of steel. A cheap knife with junk steel won't last past a tomato while a quality knife with quality steel can go months of heavy use without needing to be sharpened (not recommended of course). Bottom line, know what you have and don't complain when your cheap knife is always dull. Do some research and buy quality steel on a quality knife.

    Sharpening method

Just like the previous topic, we are no experts and realize there are many many many ways to sharpen a knife or cutting edge. There are passionate folks that swear by one way over another and vis versa. All we know is if you find a method that fits your needs and is within your budget, what is stopping you?

There are various powered sharpening method that can either use abrasive paper or stone and can have a wheel or use paper in belts. There are hand methods that use water or oil sharpening stones and there are many gadgets and gizmos out there that assist in some sort of manual sharpening system. We have not even began to try event the smallest fraction of the market place out there but know the ones we have tried all have their pros and cons.Is time a big factor? Do you like manual over powered? Do you like a system and having a guide to you your sharpening method? As we mentioned earlier, do you research and find what you prefer. We recently tried the Edge Pro Professional Pro 4 model and really think you will enjoy it.

Edge Pro | Professional Pro 4

The Professional 4 Kit from Edge Pro is a hand sharpening system that can adjust to various angles from 6 to 33 degree and infinitely in between. It can sharpen any length blade up to 5 1/4" wide. It includes their Scissors accessory that does a fantastic job of sharpening your scissors.

    Advantages/Disadvantages

We found the Pro 4 Kit had everything we needed to do knives and scissors and the results were fantastic. The quality edge does come at a price though, time. This unit does take awhile to get through a knife. The more and more we sharpen knives the faster we get at it. As this unit is intended for the professional that is going to be sharpening many knives each day, they will no doubt get to be an expert in no time. This will drastically decrease the time per knife.

We really like the ability to dial in the angle to whatever is desired. The sharpie method is extremely easy to match an existing cutting angle and is just as easy with the 120 grit stone to establish a new cutting angle. We decided to set all our knives at 21 degrees as it will be much faster the next time just to set the unit to 21 degrees and sharpen and not have to use the sharpie method each time.

We see this knife sharpener as an investment. Not only from a financial standpoint but also from a time standpoint. Whether you are sharpening your own knives or doing it as an income generator, the Edge Pro systems offer a long lasting approach to knife sharpening. With the use of the ceramics honing rod, you can touch up your knife 10-15 times before bringing it back to the sharpening system. Whether it is your knife or your customers, they are going to be satisfied with the ability to invest the time up front to get the knife properly sharpened and use it for a significant amount of time before needing to touch it up again. That is my kind of system.

Hustler Raptor Zero Turn Mower review.

Hustler Raptor Zero Turn Mower review.

Do you due diligence before purchasing mower. It is smart to read consumer reports and consumer reviews on these lawn machines and there is plenty of rating information available. Exoman and Farm Girl demonstrate the easy use of their zero turn riding mower. Exoman has had nothing but problems with briggs & stratton motors/engines.

    Makita XRU07Z 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless String Trimmer Review
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Jul 1, 2017
Price the Makita XRU07Z 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless String Trimmer on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2seQDyF
Makita is really stepping it up with their 18-volt x2 platform with more power, run-time, and all around performance. The Makita XRU07Z string trimmer is powered by two of their world famous 18-volt LXT batteries. This unit performed very well in our testing both in power, comfort, and features. We were very impressed with the noise level and balance. The Makita XRU07Z is a professional grade tool that is meant to do some serious trimming for the professional that is using it day in and day out. With the quiet performance, is would be a perfect tool for residential and commercial work where you need to be extra quiet. These locations and time-frames can be hospitals, retirement homes, businesses, early and late working hours. This unit would also be a great option for someone that is looking for a workhorse if they have a large piece of property or if they are already invested in the 18-volt LXT battery platform.

    Makita 18-volt x2 String Trimmer XRU07Z

With two 18-volt LXT batteries, one would think this unit would be heavy, bulky, and out of balance. That is far from the case! Makita did an excellent job of taking advantage of the power the two batteries deliver and putting their BL Brushless motor on the head of the unit. It is a direct drive which gives the unit that direct power right to the trimming head which is transferred right to the strings. The motor on the unit turns the head counter clockwise and helps provide balance to the user. This unit is a nice sized unit but with the user positioned handle, they can place it wherever feels the most comfortable to them. This also allows them to find the perfect position to give even more balance and ergonomics to the unit.

We tested this unit for run-time out at the farm. Hitting grass that is heavier than normal, we were able to get 29 minutes out of the two fully charged 18-volt LXT batteries. This was impressive given what we were trimming. This 29 minutes was pry 95 percent constant use. There was minimal breaks and again, heavy grass. We are confident the professional sticking to their routine clients (weekly) will achieve longer run-times when walking from tree to tree or fence to the yard. Typically they are not holding that trigger down 100 percent of the time they are at the property.

    Features and Specifications:

Makita-built Outer Rotor BL Motor (Direct-drive system)
Two speed transmission (Low - 5,000 RPMs, High - 6,500 RPMs)
    Zero emissions and reduced maintenance
Makita states 60 minutes of run time under load on low speed setting using two BL1850 batteries
    13 3/4" cutting swath
    9.9 pounds with batteries
    69" long
    Temporary reverse feature
    Battery fuel gauge

    Conclusion:

If you are a consumer that is a professional in the grass each and everyday, the x2 lineup from Makita is well worth your time to giving it a closer look. If you are a residential consumer with a large yard and heavier cutting needs, this would be an excellent unit to consider. If you are a user that is already invested in Makita's LXT batteries, this would be an excellent unit to consider.

We were very impressed with the balance, power, and the ability to quickly reverse the head for a few seconds to unwind long grass or debris in the head. We wish it wasn't just a few seconds but it is better than no reverse capabilities.

If we were professionals and used this unit day in and day out, we would have two batteries that are always on the charger ready for the x2 lineup. With their Dual Port Charger (DC18RD), you can charge two 18 volt 5.0 Ah batteries in 45 minutes.

RYOBI 40V 20" Self Propelled Lawn Mower Review | RY40190
    WorkshopAddict

    Published on Jul 8, 2017
Ryobi Bushless OPE - Ryobi is working on cutting down the competition with their second generation 20 in. 40-volt brushless self propelled lawn mower. The Brushless motor extends the runtime of the included 5.0Ah battery along with software with load sensing technology. The mower senses the load of longer grass, increasing the cutting speed and slows the cutting speed when there is a light load. The system seems to work well and it is noticeable when the blade speed increases.

The Ryobi mower lacks a side discharge, but allows for mulching or bagging options. There is a single lever located on the left side of the mower to adjust between 7 different heights from 1-1/2" to 3-3/4". The handle adjusts for two different heights and also folds up into a small package so it can be stored without taking up much room. Ryobi is very confident in this mower as it has a 90 day money back guaranty and is backed by a 5-Year Warranty.

    RY40180 Features

Works with all Ryobi 40-Volt lithium-ion tools and batteries
    Self Propelled with variable speed
Powerful brushless motor delivers gas-like power
Load sensing technology - maximizes power and efficiency
Includes 40-Volt 5.0 Ah high capacity battery for extend run time
    7-position, single-point height adjustment 1.5 in. - 3.75 in.
    2-in-1 mulching and bagging capable
    Adjustable telescoping handle
    Instant-starting, hassle-free push button start
    High intensity LED headlights
    Carrying handles for user convenience
On-board battery compartment for additional battery
Foldable quick-release handle for compact storage
5-year limited warranty, 90-day no risk satisfaction guarantee
    Self Propelled

Ryobi's self propelled option on the 40 volt lawn mower is a big deal. The way the system is designed, you can use this as a normal push mower with no extra drag, but when you want a little help, pull the levers and slide the lever to adjust the perfect speed. The system works excellent and does not seem to have a negative impact on battery life.

    Right for You?

We did a lot of testing with the Ryobi 20" mower and we think we have a good feel on who will really love this mower and who might not be so happy. First, if you enjoy cutting your yard often, this mower will work better for you. Long grass is not this mowers friend as the cut quality and runtime are poor in those conditions. If you do not want to have gas in your garage and do not mind investing in a second battery, this machine will be more appealing. Ryobi rated this machine for 1/4 to 1/2 acre of lawn. With a single battery, we would recommend it for the 1/4 acre. With a second battery, a 1/2 acre lot is not out of the question. The reason we recommend the second battery is due to the cool down and charge time of the batteries. In our case, it took an hour for the battery to cool to charge and two hours for the battery to charge. That time forced us to cut our lawn completely in two days.

To make the cost of the batteries a bit better, one could invest in other Ryobi 40 volt tools. Between the new blowers and string trimmers, one could collect enough batteries to take care of the lawn without worry.

With a lawn that is well maintained, the Ryobi mower worked well. In our experience, if you let the lawn grow and are cutting of a lot of grass, the bagger will plug at half full and the mulch quality will lag. On the other hand, if you have a small lawn, this unit is priced right and the 90 day money back guaranty give you a chance to try this unit out. If you keep it, the mower is backed by a 5 year warranty.

    Left-Blade vs Right-Blade Circular Saws
    Pro Tool Reviews

    Published on Jul 7, 2017
Whether you're a lefty or righty, there's a lot of back and forth over whether left-blade or right-blade saws are better. Whether you prefer left-blade circular saws or the more traditional right-blade circular saws depends on several factors. Ergonomics, safety, and which side of the cut you want the motor resting on all play a part.
