    Samsung Galaxy S8 Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Apr 22, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung’s 2017 flagship 5.8” Android smartphone, also available as the larger 6.2” Galaxy S8+. The S8 has a curved AMOLED 2960 x 1440 display (18.5:9 aspect ratio) with minimal bezels for a compact footprint. The Galaxy S8 runs Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung’s TouchWiz software and their Bixby virtual assistant (the voice activated feature won’t be available until later this spring).

The US model has the Snapdragon 835 CPU, while overseas models may have Samsung’s comparable Exynos 8895 CPU. The phone has 4GB RAM and 64 GB storage and a microSD card slot. It’s water resistant, has Bluetooth 5.0, Samsung Pay, a fingerprint scanner, iris scanner and facial recognition scanner. Like the Galaxy S7, it has a rear 12MP camera with f1/.7 lens and OIS that can shoot 4K video. The front camera is upgraded to 8MP. The Galaxy S8 is priced around $750 and the S8+ is around $850. The phones are available on most carriers.

Chuwi Hi13 Review - What if Surface Book was $400?
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Apr 28, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the Chuwi Hi13, a Windows 2-in-1 convertible tablet that’s clearly inspired by Microsoft Surface Book. The Hi13 is much less expensive at approx. $420 for tablet, keyboard dock and pen, or $350 if you just want the tablet. It has a 13.5” IPS display running at 3,000 x 2,000 resolution and 3:2 aspect ratio, just like Surface products. The Hi13 has dual band WiFi 802.11ac, a 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera and 4 speakers.

The tablet runs Windows 10 on the 1.1 GHz Intel Celeron N3450 “Apollo Lake” CPU with 4GB LPDDR3 RAM and 64GB eMMC flash storage. It has a USB-C port that’s used for charging, and it can handle DisplayPort out. The proprietary active pen offers good tracking with very little parallax and it has 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity. Ports include USB-C, micro USB, micro HDMI, headphone and a microSD card slot. The keyboard dock adds two USB type A 2.0 ports.

Our review unit came from GearBest.com, a reputable Chinese exporter. Here are the product links:

    Lenovo Legion Y520 Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Apr 26, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo Legion Y520, a budget gaming laptop with a quad core 45 watt CPU, NVIDIA GTX 1050 Ti 4GB GDDR5 graphics and a 1080p matte IPS display. Lenovo’s got their mojo back with the Y520: it has competitive specs for the price, a nice slim design and it’s understated (no gamer bling on the lid). The laptop starts at $850, and that gets you an Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake Core i5-7300HQ CPU, 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 1TB HDD. Our $1,180 middle configuration adds a boot 128 gig PCIe SSD, 16GB RAM and upgrades to the Core i7-7700HQ.

This gaming and pro apps notebook has a red backlit keyboard, ample ports, upgradable internals and it’s light at 5.3 lb. /2.4kg and slim at 1” / 25.8mm. It competes with the Dell Inspiron 15 7567 Gaming Edition, Asus ROG GL553VE, Acer Aspire 15 and the HP Omen 15.

5 Minutes on Tech - Surface Laptop and Surface Pro 5
    MobileTechReview

    Published on May 9, 2017
Lisa Gade goes hands-on with the upcoming 2.76 lb. super slim Microsoft Surface Laptop and talks about what it brings to the table— features, price, colors and pen capability but no pen in the box. Many asked Microsoft to build a traditional laptop, and now that it’s here, is it what we wanted? Then there’s Windows 10 S, the new version of the OS that only runs Windows UWP (Live Tile app store) apps and is included with Surface Laptop. On the convertible front, Panos Panay the Surface head has said there’s no Surface Pro 5 (but don’t panic).

    Lenovo ThinkPad T470s Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on May 11, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad T470s, the refresh of the T460s with Intel 7th generation dual core 15 watt CPUs and Thunderbolt 3. The slim 18.8mm ThinkPad T470s weighs 2.9 lbs. (1.3 kg) and starts at $1,179. It’s more affordable than the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, and is lighter and better appointed than the ThinkPad T470 that’s $100 less. The T470s is available in black and silver, and it features Lenovo’s usual excellent backlit keyboard and an excellent trackpad with NavPoint.

The Ultrabook has a 14” matte IPS display (1080p, 1080p touch and WQHD options available), PCIe NVMe on all but the base models, DDR4 RAM and your choice of Core i5 and i7 CPUs with Intel HD 620 graphics. A fingerprint scanner and 4G LTE are optional.

Ugee UG-2150 22" Pen Display Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on May 18, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the budget-priced Ugee UG-2150 Pen Display, a 21.5” IPS full HD display with a UC Logic pen digitizer that’s an affordable alternative to big screen Wacom Cintiqs. This is an external monitor with built in tilt stand that works as a companion to a Windows or Mac OS X computer via USB and display connection (HDMI, VGA or DVI). The included pen has 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity. It’s a gloss display and it doesn’t support touch. The pen display works well with a variety of art and photo editing programs including Adobe Photoshop CC, Autodesk Sketchbook, Clip Studio Paint and Corel Painter 2017.

The UG-2150 sells on Amazon for $609, but GearBest (they supplied our review unit) sells it for considerably less— $409 with this coupon: http://www.gearbest.com/graphics-tabl... . That’s much less expensive that $1,799 Wacom Cintiq 22HD and $2,300 Wacom Cintiq 27QHD. The Ugee competes with similar products from other Chinese companies— the Huion GT-220, XP-Pen Artist22 and Yiynova MVP22U.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X270 Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on May 22, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad X270, the refresh of Lenovo’s smallest traditional business laptop. The X270 replaces the X260 in Lenovo’s 12.5” Ultrabook lineup, and it’s been refreshed with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake dual core, 15 watt CPUs and Intel HD 620 graphics. It gains a USB-C port and for a portable this small, it packs a lot of ports including Ethernet, HDMI and a dock connector. The 2.9 lb. /1.3kg notebook has Lenovo’s usual excellent backlit keyboard, an MS Precision trackpad, optional LTE 4G and a fingerprint scanner.

The Bridge battery system is back with an internal 23 WHr battery and your choice of 3 removable batteries, the largest of which is 72 WHr and allows for extremely long runtimes. The machine is available with a 1366 x 768 TN panel or a 1920 x 1080 IPS display (both are matte and non-touch). Pricing starts around $800, depending on current Lenovo specials.

Microsoft Surface Pro (2017) First Look
    MobileTechReview

    Published on May 24, 2017
Lisa Gade goes hands-on with the Microsoft Surface Pro, the minor refresh of the Surface Pro 4 that will be available on June 15, 2017. Though the Surface Pro looks identical to the Surface Pro 4, there are a few design changes, most notably the hinge, and inside the convertible tablet has been refreshed with Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake dual core CPUs. Pricing remains the same as last gen, but it’s gotten more expensive since the pen is now sold separately and the updated Type Covers are more expensive.

Surface Pro (not to be confused with the first generation product with the same name) has a 12.3” Pixel Sense display running at 2736x1824 (same as SP4), a larger battery with much longer claimed battery life, a fanless design for all but the Core i7 models, and an improved digitizer and improved (now optional) $99 pen that supports 4,096 pressure levels, supports tilt and can have less latency (depending on program used). The tablet is available with up to 16GB RAM, optional LTE 4G, and a variety of SSD capacities.

    Lenovo Yoga 720 15" Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on May 26, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the 15” Lenovo Yoga 720, a rare 15.6” convertible Windows notebook with a quad core CPU and NVIDIA GTX 1050 2GB GDDR5 graphics. The Yoga 720 has Lenovo’s signature 360 degree hinges and an aluminum casing with backlit keyboard and fingerprint scanner. The laptop has the quad core, 45 watt Core i7-7700HQ CPU normally found on larger traditional laptops and gaming rigs. There are full HD and 4K display options, both glossy and supporting touch and pen via a Wacom AES digitizer (pen not included in the box).

The 4.4 lb./2kg convertible is available with 8 or 16GB DDR4 RAM and a variety of PCIe SSD capacities. It starts at $999 without dedicated graphics, and our model with 1920 x 1080 display, Core i7, GTX 1050, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD is currently around $1,200. The 4K model is $1,500.

    LG gram 14 (2017) Review

The LG gram 14 is a super-light, speedy laptop with top-notch battery life. It lacks that luxury feel, but is a little less expensive than some competition. If ultimate portability is paramount, it should be on your short list.

15" Apple MacBook Pro Review (2017, Kaby Lake)
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jun 9, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the 2017 15” MacBook Pro, Apple’s mid-2017 refresh with Intel 7th generation quad core i7 Kaby Lake CPUs and AMD Radeon Pro 5xx series graphics. The casing and core features are the same as the 2016 15” MacBook Pro we reviewed, and Apple has simply refreshed the CPU/GPU and tweaked the Butterfly keyboard. This is Apple’s largest and highest end laptop, with a price tag starting at $2,399 US.

The Mac has a 2880 x 1800 IPS wide gamut Retina display that’s still among the best on the market, and it has 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, a super-sized trackpad and a classy aluminum unibody design. It ships with Mac OS Sierra and Apple’s iWork and iLife suite of programs. As ever, it weighs 4 lb. / 1.83 kg, making it one of the lightest 15” notebook computers on the market and it’s remarkably thin at 15.5mm. We benchmark the Mac in macOS Sierra and Windows 10 to see how much performance has improved from the 2016 Skylake model.

Apple iPad Pro 10.5 & iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Gen Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jun 14, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews Apple’s high end iPad models for 2017: the iPad Pro 10.5” and the second generation iPad Pro 12.9". Both feature 600 nit Retina 264 PPI displays with P3 color gamut, True Tone color compensation and ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate displays. They both use the extremely fast Apple A10X CPU, have 4GB RAM and your choice of 64, 256 or 512GB storage. The 10.5” model’s slim bezels mean it almost as compact as the iPad Pro 9.7 it replaces. As ever, the Apple Pencil and keyboard are sold separately. There are WiFi-only and WiFi+ LTE 4G models available. The 10.5” starts at $649 and the 12.9” starts at $799.
