    Microsoft Surface Laptop Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jun 21, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the first traditional design notebook computer from Microsoft, the Surface Laptop. This slim 14.5mm Ultrabook has a 13.5” PixelSense IPS display and weighs 2.8 lb/1.28kg. It’s unique looking thanks to the Alcantara keyboard deck that’s available in four colors. The Surface Laptop supports both pen and touch, and the new Surface Pen is sold separately for $99. It’s available with Intel Kaby Lake 7th gen dual core 15 watt Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs with Intel HD 620 or 640 graphics. It has a 720p webcam supporting Windows Hello facial recognition for login, a backlit keyboard and MS Precision keyboard. Pricing starts at $999 for the base Core i5 model, and the Core i7 configurations start at $1,599.

    2017 Microsoft Surface Pro Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jun 19, 2017

Lisa Gade reviews the new Surface Pro, released in June 2017. This is the successor to the Surface Pro 4, and boasts quieter, cooler and faster operation and Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake dual core CPUs. Battery life is also much better. It has the same design (with minor changes like more rounded edges and a deeper reclining kickstand) and the same basic display specs: 12.3” IPS Pixel Sense display running at 2736 × 1824, SSDs and your choice of 4, 8 or 16GB RAM. As ever, the keyboard is sold separately, and the new Signature Edition Type cover is $159 (available in a variety of colors). The basic black keyboard is $129.

The pen is no longer included, and the improved 2017 Surface Pen is $99 and offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity, tilt in applications that support that feature, and lower force of initial activation. Surface Pro pricing remains unchanged. The base Intel Core m3 is $799, and our Intel Core i5 with 8GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD is $1,299. Core i7 models with Intel Iris Pro 640 graphics are available at higher prices. The Surface Pro is compatible with the Surface Dock, and it still has a charging/dock connector, 1 USB 3.0 port, 3.5mm audio and a mini DisplayPort (no USB-C).

Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13 Review - Luxury Ultrabook at a Nice Price
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jul 7, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the high end yet affordable Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 13, a 13.3” Windows 10 Ultrabook with a unibody aluminum design, NVIDIA 940MX 1GB GDDR5 dedicated graphics, Sharp IGZO 1920 x 1080 display and Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. The 14.8mm Xiaomi Notebook Air 13 looks a bit like the 13” MacBook Pro until you open the lid to reveal the backlit silver keyboard rather than Apple’s usual black keyboard. Build quality is excellent, the specs are fantastic for the price, and the only caveat is that it’s not sold directly in the US, and you must get it through importers like GearBest.

The 2.86 lb. /1.29 kg laptop has 8GB DDR4 RAM, a 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Intel 8260 WiFi with Bluetooth 4.1, 1MP webcam, HDMI, two USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C port.We look at the Intel 6th gen Core i5 model, and the 7th gen Kaby Lake refresh should be available in late July 2017 (it has the same design).

Check it out at GearBest.com — we’ve got a discount going with them right now for $659.99 at this link (and use coupon code USAir13): http://www.gearbest.com/laptops/pp_42...

Samsung Notebook 9 Pro (2017) Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jul 11, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the redesigned Samsung Notebook 9 Pro, now available in 13.3 and 15 inch sizes. These are 2-in-1 convertible Windows 10 laptops that compete directly with the HP Spectre x360 and Lenovo Yoga 720. We look at the 15” model that sells for $1,299. It has an aluminum casing, color accurate 1920 x 1080 display supporting touch and the included S Pen (Wacom EMR), Intel Core i7-7500U 7th gen Kaby Lake CPU, AMD Radeon 540 2GB GDDR5 dedicated graphics, 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 256GB SSD.

The 17mm thick laptop has a backlit keyboard, Windows Hello camera, outdoor brightness mode, a USB-C port, 2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, 3.5mm audio and a microSD card slot. It weighs 3.79 lb. /1.7kg, making it one of the lighter 15” convertibles on the market. The excellent pen makes it enticing to artists and avid note takers.

Pens in this video: The pencil style digital pen is the $45 Staedtler Noris. Wacom Bamboo Smart (the one with clip on the cap) and and an old Samsung Slate 7 pen. And of course the included S Pen that slows in the silo.

    MobileTechReview

    Published on Jul 31, 2017
Lisa Gade review’s Toshiba’s 12.5” ultraportable with 360 degree hinges and Wacom AES pen- the Portege X20W. This is an extremely thin and light convertible with a magnesium alloy casing and Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake Core i5 and i7 CPUs. The 15.4mm thick, 2.4 lb. / 1.08 kg notebook is available with 8 or 16GB RAM and fast PCIe NVMe SSDs. It has a 1920 x 1080 IPS matte display with Gorilla Glass 4, a backlit keyboard and a Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C Gen. 2 port. Pricing starts around $1,199 for the Core i5 and it’s available on Toshiba’s website and from MicrosoftStore.com. The X20W competes with the Microsoft Surface Pro, Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and other thin and light convertibles and 2-in-1 models.

    NVIDIA Max-Q - 5 Minutes on Tech
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Aug 2, 2017
Now that NVIDIA Max-Q laptops have started to ship from Asus, MSI, Clevo/Sager, Alienware and Acer, Lisa Gade explains Max-Q technology and how it differs from the standard NVIDIA Pascal GTX 1060, GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 dedicated graphics cards for laptops. Max-Q allows for thinner, lighter and quieter gaming laptops as with the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 we show in this video, but what are the drawbacks?

Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 Review - GTX 1080 Max-Q Portable Powerhouse
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Aug 4, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, a 4.9 lb. / 2.2kg 15" gaming laptop with the quad core i7-7700HQ CPU and NVIDIA GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5 Max-Q dedicated graphics. This is one of the first NVIDIA Max-Q notebooks to hit the market, and it promises less heat and noise than the standard GPU counterpart. This allows for thinner designs and lower weight as well— going after the 15” MacBook Pro, MSI GS Stealth Pro and Razer Blade market.

The 18mm thick laptop is clad in classy black aluminum, minus the gamer bling. It’s bottom panel drops down when you open it to increase cooling. The laptop has a 120Hz full HD matte IPS display, RGB color-programmable keyboard in an unusual frontmost location, right side MS Precision trackpad that doubles as a number pad at the touch of a button and Intel 8265AC WiFi. Very fast PCIe NVMe SSDs and 16GB DDR4 2400 MHz RAM are standard. The GTX 1070 model is $2,299 and the GTX 1080 model is $2,699. Competitors include the afore mentioned laptops as well as the Max-Q equipped MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro, Acer Predator Triton 700, Sager NP8952 and an upcoming Origin PC model (so far only this Asus and the Acer will have the 1080 option).

    Lenovo Yoga 720 13" Review
    MobileTechReview

    Published on Aug 9, 2017
Lisa Gade reviews the 13.3” Lenovo Yoga 720, an Intel 7th generation Kaby Lake convertible Ultrabook with 360 degree hinges and Wacom AES active pen support (pen not included in the box). The aluminum clad 2.9 lb. / 1.3kg Yoga 720 is a more affordable counterpart to the Yoga 910, and at $849 starting price, it’s a bit less expensive than the competing HP Spectre x360 13”. The laptop is most commonly available with a 1920 x 1080 IPS gloss touch screen, but Lenovo does have a 4K display option. It’s available with Core i5 and i7 CPUs, 8 or 16GB RAM and fast PCIe NVMe SSDs. It has one Thunderbolt 3 port (not 2, sorry!), a USB A port and headphone jack. The optional $60 Lenovo Active Pen 2 supports the 4,096 pressure levels offered by the Yoga 720 series.
