Thinking about a 7.62x51 battle rifle as my next rifle. Looking at getting something a little more affordable as I don't need a high end 7.62x51 rifle. Do you guys think I would be happy with something in the $850-900 range, like a DPMS LR-308 or a ArmaLite DEF10?

Saiga 308 for maybe $1000 or DSA FAL for about $1500 would be my two options.

Mags for each: CSSPECS makes serviceable steel mags for the Saiga and FAL mags should be everywhere (at least they were).

No personal experience with AR-10 but they certainly have a good following...

Good Luck

If you don't want to spend much and are set on 7.62 I would pick up an AK. You can find an M70 OPAP for around $500-$600 online. You could spend the extra money and get an AR10 platform, but you will pay A LOT more for it. I guess it really depends on the quality control, but I rolled the dice and came out with a great OPAP that shoots straight and blows the door off the WASR10s I have seen. Opap out shoots many ARs as well.

I am in Commiefornia where a lot of AKs are banned by name, so if you're in a free state you will have more choices like arsenal, norinco, etc.

Too bad you don't live in Canada. I own a M305/M14, made by Norinco. Ain't the prettiest crayon in the box, but, it sure does shoot every time. Cost me $529 (Canadian). Its an exact copy, a little rough around the edges, but, with a lot of after market options, you can tune it up to be pretty sweet.......

My 2 DPMS 308s purchased 4-5 years ago seem to be working just fine for me

This FAL may have looked a little rough around the edges, but what a shooter!

IMBEL Argentinian MILSURP.

SUIT optics and plenty of cheap mags.

Every few years I visit with my FAL in Nevada.

If you want to know everything about .308 rifles I suggest you visit The Falfiles.

I was given British .303 and really like it. I too would like .308 cal as well .Vatching & vaiting ..........

I have AR platforms, so maybe a Stag upper. 300 blackout? Hmmmmm....

I just wanted you to know why I was thanking you.

.300 AAC Blackout can use standard AR-15 lower and mags.

Only the upper needs to be swapped out.

Very cool and on my wish list!

If funds are in an issue (and they usually are), consider the Mossin Nagant 91/30, it's a hell of a durable rifle, takes 7.62 x 54 ammo and is a nice complement to an AK (I have both). You can pick up a Mossin for a little over $100....очень хорошо

Thinking about a 7.62x51 battle rifle as my next rifle.
If you want to throw big 'ol hunks of lead long distances, get the American standard, a Remington 700 with a nice scope. 5 million produced over the last 50 years. Plenty of aftermarket support. Easy to find parts for.

I don't live in Nebraska or West Texas, so I never anticipate the need to shoot people farther away than I can even identify them with binoculars. Where I live is wooded, and suburban. In a time of crises, we need sling lead fast and in high volumes at never more than 150 yards, so my kids all have 5.56.

I looked at one this past weekend at a gun show in Tipton Indiana. They are built very well and like 90+% of the parts, including mags, are mil spec OR BETTER. This was ASKING $950 for rifle, mag pouch, 3 mage, and 50 rounds of ammo. ASKING $950 usually means they will take $850-$875. They are on G-broker all the time.

So all in all, is the .300 BA an economical round in your opinion ?

Thanks guys for all the comments and recommendations. Have been thinking of this question since I posted the thread. Just a few thoughts I have.

I really want a battle rifle that I can reach out and touch someone or something if that need ever arose. 7.62x51 seems like a great setup for that. Despite the fact that ammo is quite expensive.

Right now I have rifles in 5.56, 5.45, 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r. After thinking about it, I am not sure I really want to add a rifle in another caliber to those that I have. I think the recommendation of the Vepr is a great idea. Especially if I can find one in 7.62x54r that isn't too expensive. Been looking around, and the pricing that some online dealers want is quite expensive imo. I know the ban on import Russian riffles is probably a part of that (is Vepr part of the band?). Maybe I will find one for a good price if I keep looking, or maybe some dealer in the USA will assemble some here?

I like the thought of a 7.62x54r battle rifle due to the fact that I already have several thousand rounds in that caliber. Plus being able to get Russian surplus 7.62x54r for around $0.20-$0.22 per round.

Anyone on here know if there is an AR-10 upper receiver in 7.62x54r?

Any other thoughts?

I don't know that much about .308 Win/7.62x51, but have you thought about a PTR? They can be found on the cheap, sometimes. I've heard the good, the bad and the ugly about them.

The Russian VEPR is also chambered in 54R.

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.a...e=russian+vepr+7.62x54r+23"+rifles&groupid=11

Currently sold out but they might be available if you check out gun shows, gunbroker, et al.

good luck

SC

Yup, that's the one I have been looking out and considering. But can't seem to find any new ones in stock. I think it is relate to that whole ban against Russian arms that Obama did the EO order on. Hopefully I'll come across one. Or if any of you do if you can let me know that would be great as well.

This probably deserves its own thread but have been reading up on 300 AAC Blackout (7.62x35 mm). Already have an AR-15. I like its ability to run with standard AR-15 magazines and also running sub-sconic rounds. Hmmmmm.

Won't have the same stopping power as a 7.62x51 or 7.62x54 nor the ability to reach out and touch someone, but it sounds like it this is the round the 5.56 should have been?

Yeah, I already have a Mosin Nagant (Tula) that I really like for a cheap bolt action.

I posted the cost to me in the original post. The big plus for me is that its a 1/3 to 1/4 of the price of an original M1A. I don't worry about babying it or the odd scuff. For all intents and purposes its an M1A/M14, except its made by the Chinese. The furniture isn't as pretty and there are a few "rough" edges, but, who gives a crap, it performs flawlessly. This is a great short review that sums it up......

Lookin' good obilly! I'd really like to hear about the builds, if you haven't posted it previously (can you give us the link to the post, if that's the case?).

Chinese (Norinco) NHM 91 - 7.62x39

Very few made it in to this country before Clinton slammed the door shut. About 800 of them in the USA. NOT CHEAP, but can mount Russian optics and works really well with them.

Here is one - I have nothing to do with this sale, this is JUST an example.

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=444636802

Or just Google NHM 91

I have read that guys in MT and ID we're bringing them over the border on ATVs and making some money flipping them here. No idea if true, but would not surprise me.
