Two bugs in a jar reproduce, doubling their number every minute. The jar is full in an hour. How long does it take to half fill the jar?

The answer was obvious to me (somehow related to binary numbers) but some people have a hard time coming to the correct conclusion. How about you? Did it take long to figure it out?

Well if they double every minute then it'd be half full one minute before the hour, or at 59 minutes.

I'm sure some would fall prey to thinking 30 minutes or half an hour. But they'd be wrong.

I really don't think they could fill the jar in the first place. Where is all the food that thy are eating. When they fill up the jar more, there won't be any room for the food and water. Plus I think they would reproduce less when overcrowding occurs. Depending on the bugs they might start cannibalizing one another and this will change things. Plus what is the mortality rate, are we including dead bugs in the jar as well?

Edit: Also what is rate of growth for each bug, because that will affect calculations as well. the size of the baby bug to a full grown bug, if they even stop growing as well.

yeah, ya think they'd be hungry after all that sex.
IDK - I suppose there could be gold ones.
Damn, fellas, they're only in the jar for an hour - be reasonable.
IDK where they came from - they were in the jar

K?

How did you time the hour? Did you use a stopwatch or an hourglass?

Nobody's even bothered to ask what day of the week it was, or the time of year. C'mon, let's get serious, here. And is it a mason jar, or an empty peanut butter jar? That could change everything.
